I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey, my PC configuration is:

Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.53GHz 2.40 GHz

EVGA eGeForce 8800 GTS 512MB DDR3

I play Call of Duty 4 and Counterstrike: Source, both on Valve's Steam, and my PC freezes after I play for a short time. It's only when I play games, though, so it must be my GTS video card over heating, right? It freezes the screen and sometimes there is a loud scratchy noise that comes out of the speakers. Once in a while the PC will just restart, but it usually just sits frozen until I force shutdown.

About 3 months ago, I replaced my old mobo with an Asus A7N8X. Since then, I've been having trouble running games. I've installed 3 games; EVE, Need for Speed Underground 2, and Call of Duty. I haven't checked for EVE, but for the other two, I meet or exceed the recommended specs. My graphics card is a Geforce4 Ti 4200.

The problem I'm having is that the games all run very smoothly with no chugging or anything, but not forever. Usually after about 10 minutes (less with Need for Speed) the game will either completly freeze up my computer, requiring a reboot, or will crash my system altogether. What I don't understand is that if my computer can't handle the game, why does it run it incredibly smoothly for 10 minutes then all of a sudden, it can't handle it? I was able to fix the problem with Need for Speed by setting all the graphics to the absolute minimum, but that didn't solve the problem with the otehr two.

Something else that struck me as odd is that I never had any problems playing games prior to the mobo switch, I had lots of games, like Planetside, Medal of Honour, Battlefeild 1942, and Rainbow Six 3. I also had COD installed prior to the switch, and I never had any trouble with it while it was set on the default display settings, but now it freezes. Anyone have any tips for me?

I should also mention that Warcraft 3 and Civilization 3 run with no problems right now.

It sounds like a heat problem with your graphics card or cpu.

Check your cpu temps with Motherboard monitor 5 (MBM5) you can get it Here

I have a Dell P6130Y running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, (AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core Processor 2.4GHz, 8 gigs of ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9100)

Whenever I play a game of any kind, it will be running perfectly smooth for the first 10 minutes, solid frame-rate (40 or more) and then
at the ten minute mark the frame rate drops to around 4 fps for the following 5-10 minutes, at which point it resumes its 40 fps and plays
smooth again and then dips and repeats this process over and over and over.

I have searched Google and these forums countless times to no avail, I have defragmented my hard drive several times with several different programs including
Auslogics Disk Defragmenter and the standard defragmenter that comes with windows. I have run a system recovery, at which point everything
was erased and restored from the Factory Image drive, so it is not spyware or a virus that is the cause. Thirdly I downloaded Process Explorer to
see if my CPU, hard drive or memory usage was going up during the lag spike... nothing. I also have updated all my drivers... nothing.

One more thing: it didn't do this when I first got the PC.

What its not:
1. fragmented hard drive
2. virus or spyware
3. some unseen process or program
4. old drivers

I fear it may be some undiagnosable problem but any help is welcome!

Hi,

Are you sure you have the right specs for your PC, they just don't look right to me.
Your GPU appears to be a laptop only model, yet the quad-core and the 8 gigs of RAM suggest desktop. Could you just check your Graphics card model (type "dxdiag" into the start menu and then go to the display tab when the window opens).
Also, is your computer a desktop or a laptop.

So recently I have been having problems playing any games on my computer. Whenever I boot the game it runs fine and smooth. Then about 20-30 minutes into the game it will all of a sudden start to lag and my frame rate will be horrible. I have tried playing many different games and they all act the same way. Even if I exit the game and then start it again it will still be laggy. I tried changing the Settings but the problem still exists. I typically will play Steam games like Half-Life or Counter-Strike but even when I play Minecraft of Starcraft II this will happen. I don't know what could have caused this but it needs to stop. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or even have had this happen to them. Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jack

A:Games lag after 20 minutes

sounds like the GPU or the card's onboard memory could be overheating. this is a common problem and can usually be remedied by simply adjusting the fan speed. you can do this through the control panel or by downloading RivaTuner/Speedfan. if the model does not have a fan (i.e. passive solution) you could upgrade to an active cooling fan or swap thermal, or both. this means replacing the thermal conductivity compound that bonds the cooler with the GPU core.

my pc is freezing after about 20 mins, it could be while using internet explorer browsing or just sitting idle it just freezes.
now if you press ctrl alt del to bring up task manager the problem will go away if your lucky, but then it will be back.
first i thought it was a problem with ie 8 so downloaded firefox but the same thing happened, i tried deleting all browsers going back to internet explorer 6 but still the same problem.
i have tried malware cleaner no luck!. i have tried downloading kaspersky and running but the problem is still there.
i have deleted all unnecessary programs on start-up , problem still there.
I have tried deleting as many processes as i can through task manager , problem still there.
its as if there isn't enough ram but there is 2gb and if you look at task manager when its running it doesn't look like there is a problem with memory.
i have deleted programs to free up hard drive a bit and it didn't make any difference so i have put most of them back now.
Anyway i'm a bit stuck as i don't really want to fresh install as that would mean hunting down programs original discs for drivers etc and i'm not really sure where they would all be.
any help would be most welcome as i'm running out of ideas.
thanks

Hey,

I'm having trouble with some of my games. I can play games like Warcraft 3, WoW, Starcraft 2, Dragon Age: Origins fine, no problems.

However NBA 2k10 and FIFA 11 have issues. After playing the game for about 10 minutes the games slow to a crawl. The only way to get them to start running well again is to restart the computer. A:Certain games slowing down after 10 minutes

As always check to be sure you are not overheating your graphics card.

In nearly every case I find that the game "slows down" after X amount of time there is an overheating problem. If so (it is overheating), take the side of your case off and measure how thick the layer of dust is inside.

So I've been trying to fix this problem all day. After I start up the computer it freezes a couple of minutes after I log into windows. In safe mode it works just fine, and I've tried clean booting and disabling all non-windows applications and software. It still freezes. I tried restoring to a previous state and it failed, I also did a full virus scan and found nothing.

I'd rather find an easy fix instead of having to wipe my entire hard drive, buy a new CD/CD key, and reinstalling all of my software. I went to some other sources online and they weren't sure what to tell me.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi,

I have problems with freezes in Vista Home Premium 32bits (SP1)
It arrived first a few days ago: After an hibernation of 4-5 hours, Vista was Freezed. I did a reboot. It restarted well. But since then I have ALWAYS a freeze after 10-15 minutes.
I must add that I have done hibernations for 6 month now without problems (because Vista freezed often already on shutdown) and I have done no modification (soft-hard) on the Pc.

It freezes about 5-15 minutes after Start depending on what I do.
It freezes also if I do nothing!
It freezes also if Aero, or Indexing disabled or whith a clean boot.
It freezes also on a safe mode start after loading the CRCcheck driver!
After a normal start CHKDSK is sometimes running automatically, and it says that it has repared 1-4 files.

I have consulted your site and this forum before posting and have done almost everything you recommend:
I have opened the box: no dust, no overheat.
I have made a check of the memory: all is ok!
I have made a check of the hard-disk : all is ok
I have verified the drivers: everything ok.
I have run Antivirus (AVG) : all ok
I have run Hijackthis for the Registry and analyzed : all is ok also here
I have run SFC: no problems
Also no malware and I do not overclock.

One track I have is : I cannot read the Event's Journal.
The Icon of he EVENTS OBSERVER in the Control Panel Administrative Tools has a yellow exclamation mark and a red cross and when I click on it there is an IMMEDIATE Freeze.
What does that mean?... Read more

I've been experiencing a freeze up while surfing the Net ever since I've upgraded to MS IE 5.5 and have been on it for around 30 minutes or so. Any suggestions? I have emptied my Temp Internet files on a regular basis. Thanks!

Recently after I tried to add another cooling fan into my NZXT phandom case my pc would turn on and freeze. Sometimes before the windows logo even comes on my mouse and keyboard lights would turn off. I have since disconnected the extra cooling fan but the problem did not go away. I have checked my temperatures and they are not very high. My only thought on this problem is that when I also tried to add a 2nd extra fan (which did not fit well with its clamps due to the graphics card being right below the location) onto my north bridge which at some time had a heat problem as all with this motherboard do but was fixed with a cooler. In trying to add the 2nd fan I might have moved the cooler slightly and messed up the thermal paste connection. However I am not completely sure because my temperatures seem normal and are not in the high range. The only problems or hints I can see are the freezing after several minutes after startup, not reaching the windows logo at all, and my mouse and keyboard lights not turning on when the pc does not reach windows logo before being a black screen.

Yo! I would like to ask your expert assistance in this problem of mine:

My PC keeps on freezing randomly every 2-5 minutes or so. This has just started very recently, just a few days ago. When I boot up my OS everything is fine for the first few minutes then suddenly it freezes.

Now there are two types of freezes that usually occur:

1. Only Windows OS is freezing This is the most frequent
- In this type of freezing, only the OS is freezing. I cant access the task manager, I cant Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Esc, I can't even click the Start Button cause the Windows Explorer isn't responding as well. But when I press the num lock, caps lock and scroll lock the lights are still responding so I know that it will respond when I wait. It DOES RESPOND, HOWEVER, now it keeps on freezing every 5-10 seconds.

2. The entire PC freezes
- In this type, the entire PC freezes. the num lock, caps lock and the scroll lock's lights aren't responding. Only the mouse pointer is movable.

I really do not know what is causing this and I BADLY need your help on this.

Any response is immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

A:My PC keeps on freezing randomly every 2-5 minutes

freezing is usually down to heat, power bad RAM or hard drive issues.

First download CPUID HWmonitor and post a screenshot.
Second download your hard drive manufacturers diagnostic tool from their site or seatools for windows and run both tests, if you drive fails the tests backup your data and replace the drive.
Third download memtest86 burn it to disc and boot from the disc and let memtest run for 7 passes which can take 6 hours or more. If you get errors on memtest then your RAM is faulty and needs replaced.

I've read through forums and run tests, malware software, ati-virus etc as per suggested solutions and can't seem to resolve it. Things I've tried:Restart in Safe Mode with Networking - FreezesRestart in Safe Mode - Works! I'm now at a loss and don't know what else to try. I have over the years (I've had this laptop since 2007/8) formatted it several times with a variety of operating systems: Windows XP, Linux of two varieties and finally Windows 7 (current). Can anyone suggest anything else? Apart from formatting it again or throwing it out a window, is there any salvation? I really cannot afford a new laptop.

Download the diagnoistic for the hard drive from the manafacturers website and run it. It could be a bad sector causing it to freeze.

When your computer gets a black screen only sometimes, it usually means your ram is on the way out..For example if you boot your computer and it doesn’t work, then go back an hour later, and it does work, your memory is playing up. You can try taking the ram out, gently cleaning it with an antistatic cloth, and replacing it. This may solve your problem.

I know three different Vista x64 systems with the same issue, all starting within a week or two of each other. . . different boards, different ages, different hardware, but common is Vista x64. . . i built two of them, and a friend built his own. . .

software all tests out fine, memory tests out fine, and anti virus, spy ware does not detect anything. . .

does anyone know of a hot fix or update that is buggy to Vista x64?

when the freeze up happens, everything stops, even the hard drives stop reading, though still spin. the event view does not give an consistent events preceding each freeze up. . . and usually a restart solves the issue, but not every time. .

thanks

A:Freezing usually within 5 minutes of boot up

This procedure frequently helps to determine whether the cause of a complete lockup is software or hardware:

Lockup with sound loop, NO BSOD/Error report

The fact that 3 systems around you are (suddenly?) locking up makes a software cause slightly more likely - you're installing something on all 3 systems and there's a kernel-mode driver which is misbehaving. However, there's absolutely no guarantee at this stage that it's the same problem on all 3 systems.

If this was a general Vista bug, I'd for one be very upset, seeing as how I'm typing this on an x64 Vista installation.

Hello there,

I have a HP pavillion dv 2700 notebook. I'm running windows vista 64 bit, 4 gb ram, 285 gb memory. My problem has started recently. My laptop will boot up properly and work fine but every 26-30 minutes exactly it will freeze. My mouse will still function properly but anything I click will not open. Any program I have open will not respond and the start menu or crt alt del or alt f4 functions will not work either. The strange thing is that if I have a youtube video loaded fully the video will freeze but the sound will continue to the end of the video. I have no idea what is wrong. I scanned for virus and malware and it came up clean. I'm sure its not overheating because my speedfan says its at around 50-55 degrees C. Once it freezes I have to hold down the power button for a few seconds to turn it off. When I turn it back on again it says windows has experienced and unexpected shutdown and asks if I want to reboot in safemode or normal. I'm at a loss of ideas.

Thanks!

Every few minutes the computer will freeze for about 20-30 seconds, allowing me to move my mouse and minimize the current screen I'm in but that is all. I can hit Con/Alt/Del and then just close the popup screen that brings up and all is fine again. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I've run adaware and spybot every day to make sure the Comp stays as clean as possible, but this is getting very annoying.

I can post a HJ log if needed. Thanks!

Hi, I'm having a lot of computer trouble right now and could use some help.

A couple days ago I was watching a video on my computer and all of a sudden it froze, replaying the last second of the sound over and over again. I could move the mouse around but couldn't click anything. I had to manually restart the computer.

This has continued happening, and while trying to fix my problem I must have done something wrong because firefox stopped working, and IE closes as soon as I open it (about half the time). I managed to get firefox up and running again, but the freezing continues.

I have done system restore, a memory check (I think that's what it's called), chk disk, registry mechanic twice, malwarebytes (on my second scan now), and virus scans (more than one with different programs - mcafee and trend micro).

It's weird what keeps happening. Sometimes it happens when a video is playing, sometimes it does it for no reason. I let a video run last night to see how long it would last and it had no problems. When I played a few others it froze after a few minutes.

This is driving me crazy because it doesn't seem to have to do with any one particular thing. I tried to open a zip file and it froze. I'll open firefox and it will freeze. I'll try and watch something, and it does the same thing.

Also, control alt delete doesn't work. At first when I did it t he little green box would show up on the taskbar but it never actually showed u... Read more

Being able to run in Safe Mode is a solid sign that the issue is most likely with a device driver.

As for the registry "fixes" we here at TechSpot tell everyone to avoid using them because they cause more harm than good.

Have you tried a Windows Repair?

Just yesterday, my Vista started acting really strangely... it won't stop freezing after I have it turned on for about 5 minutes. I'll turn a browser on, or anything really, and after a few minutes, it'll freeze up and i'll wait to see if it comes back around, as a frozen internet usually would, but no, instead of going back to normal, the cursor comes back, but I cannot click on anything after that! Everything on the desktop freezes up and it never comes back to normal. I can't shut it down regularly or anything. After it froze, I tried to bring up the Task Manager, but when I did, instead of the manager, it would go black on me and bring up a pop saying that there was a "security error"..... security??... why would that even be coming up you know??

The only strange thing that I did that was abnormal, was I tried out my memory card slot that you can put your digital camera memory cards in so you don't need a USB cord...

But anyhow, about an hour after I did that, and everything seemed normal "my computer said it installed the new device, as usual".
My computer suddenly freezes up, a blue screen takes it over with some words on it (but it flashed too fast for me to read) and then flashed to black, and shut itself off!

That part was really strange to me, it definitely not normal.

Now it just keeps doing freezing up and I can't have it on for more than 5 minutes without it doing that... (unless i'm on safe mode, like now) I thought it might nee... Read more

A:Vista freezing after 5 minutes..

Hello celestialpocky,
I think your right, it looks like it is a driver problem, as you are already in safe mode and it's working ok, that tends to confirm it. (although my first thought was a memory issue).
Boot in to safe mode and carry out a system restore to the point before you put in the memory card. Reboot and post your results. Good luck.

I have an HP Pavilion G42-303DX. It's only about 8 months old. About 3 weeks ago after turning it on, a screen came up saying the cooling fan wasn't working and continued use could result in lost files. I went ahead and continued so I could backup files. Later in the day the fan made a funny noise and then started again. Since then it has been working. A few days ago the laptop started freezing randomly during use. The last couple of days it has been freezing every 10-15 minutes or so. I have to hold in the button to turn it off. I don't know if this is due to the fan maybe not properly cooling the laptop. According to HP my warranty has already ran out (I thought they typically lasted a year?). I imagine it would be cheaper at a repair shop than to send to HP if needed. But before I spent any money, I wanted to see if maybe it was a simple fix I could do myself. I ran startup repair and restored it to a previous day. It didn't fix the problem. I don't know a lot about computers so I was hoping to find some help here. Thanks!

A:Laptop freezing every few minutes!

Hi and welcome to TSG forums.
If you computer is less than a year old, I would contact HP customer service...I believe they will replace the fan...You may have to send it to them for service. Worth contacting them to see what they have to say.

About a week ago, my comp started freezing while playing games (chiefly World of Warcraft)
Since then, it's become more and more frequent, and is now crashing just while using Firefox.

I've scanned for viruses/malware/spyware etc. etc., Updated my video drivers. Done a system restore, and It's not overheating.

Haven't added anything recently that could cause this, only things I can think of are that Crap Cleaner may have deleted something it shouldn't have, or the actual card itself is damaged. (Can dust do that? :S)

So, lets start with Hello.
I would appreciate any help on the subject.
The problem: I've recently bought this awesome new gaming computer (specs later on)
and I got some new games on it such as; Crysis 3, FarCry 3, Payday 2, The Witcher 2, and on.
After about 10-20 minutes of gaming, I start noticing lag spikes in the game as in - momentarily FPS drop, which are pretty frequent, but aren't extremely massive that freeze my screen, but in irritating little stops of 0.05 secs every other second. they are eye-noticeable but I have no idea how to better describe them.
Now to my (pretty much what I think is awesome top 5% world computer) SPECS:
-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570 [email protected] (4CPUs) 3.80GHz.
16.0(GB) RAM. 64x. Win 7 Home Premium SP1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660. my screen is Samsung's SyncMaster T190.

I've monitored my computer's temp using HWMonitor, and nothing seems too high. the CPU keeps going on +- the same temp while gaming and while not.

Thanks for any help !

A:20 minutes into gaming - lag spikes in games

If you could provide us with the actual temps (numbers) it would be helpful. But, firstly, when something like this occurs. It's good to do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the latest graphic drivers. Is this something you've already tried?

Also, what settings are you trying to play these games on? While the GTX 660 is a pretty decent card. You can't expect it to play at MAX settings with desirable frame rates.

Hi,

This is my first post, and hopefully the problem can be solved. Usually I don't need to post on forums like these, but for this, I cannot solve the problem.

Okay, so when I play a high-end game (such as Crysis, Race Driver: Grid, Dead Space) I get good FPS of 40+ for the first 30 minutes or so, however the game then goes into a loop of lagging for a few seconds then resuming to the 40+ FPS for around a minute then starts lagging again for a few seconds and so on until I quit the game. Once I do quit the game, and re-open it, it works fine again for another 30 minutes and then does the same thing again.
Things I've already tried are:

1. Update official drivers from their official websites (nVidia, Intel, Samsung etc).
2. Closed down any consuming applications such as antivirus, msn, steam etc.
3. Placed more fans into my case to prevent overheating (but I don't think this is the issue as I can restart a game it works fine again for 30 minutes)

Can anyone give me any suggestions.

Stefan,

P.s. I am running windows 7 however the issue has occurred in Windows XP, Vista and 7. My specifications can be seen on my profile.

Thank you

Heya guys,

Since I've had a good experience with you guys helping me, I thought I'd run an issue by you which I've had forever now..

When I play certain games, I get massive FPS drops during playing. Games with which I'm having this problem currently (and thus, for certain) are Fallout 3, League of Legends, and Left 4 Dead 2

I've tried updating various drivers, killing processen in my task manager, disabling the windows page file, running programs like gamebooster and advanced system care, etc.. etc..

The weird thing is.. after a system reboot, it seems i get a few minutes (5 or so) of normal gaming.. no fps drops or anything.. but after about 5 minutes, they keep happening all the time.. about 20 seconds every minute or so.. even closing the game and restarting doesn't help anything, only a total system reboot seems to give me a little window of normal gameplay..

I've had this problem immediately after a fresh windows install a while ago.. after that, I haven't used this computer for a while because I was in the hospital for about a year for health problems, but now that I'm back the same problems are still there..

The FPS drops also appear to be totally random, and not while something in the game actually (appears) to be happening.. While just standing around in L4D2 and there's not even zombies coming at us.. I get massive fps drops for about 10-20 seconds every minute, making virtually every game unplayable..

Whenever I load any game I own on this computer, I start off with a good FPS of around 40-80. However, about 5-10 minutes later it drops to about 0-5. What I find strange is just yesterday morning my computer arrived back from Dell from a water repair, could they possibly put it back together wrong? My first concern was overheating, so I checked my temps.
GPU Core was at 90 Celsius when I began to get choppiness. My Core 1 and 2 were at about 94 Celsius. This seems extremely high. Is this something I'm going to have to ship back to Dell to get repaired, or can a laptop cooling pad fix this, perhaps?
Please Help Me out, I haven't been able to play WoW in 2 weeks, and now my PC's back and I lag like hell >.<

So I just built my computer 1 week ago and since then I have not been able to play a game for more than about 20 minutes. I played before my GPU came in and was also crashing, so I know that it cannot be the GPU. I recently took it apart and put back in the stock cooler and was able to play for a good 4 hours without crashing. The next day it went back to normal and I am still continuously crashing no matter how small the game is (i.e Heavy bullets). I tried downloading minecraft to see if it was just steam games that were crashing but nope, minecraft crashed too, along with League of Legends. I have tried so many things such as checking temp while playing, checking my CPU and disc usage which reach very high even about 100% when playing. It seems to crash a lot faster when I play games online so I'm thinking that it may have to do something with insufficient permissions? I'm not too sure. Drivers are all working fine.

Just had this problem start today. Basically, I'll be using my computer, and it is working fine, and then it'll try to load something and freeze up.

Some background...

Was using this afternoon, had a problem loading a page. After a series of turning off and on, logging back in, experiencing the same problem, I finally got to the point where the system restored to a time where it previously worked, I'm guessing about yesterday morning based on what was on my desktop.

At one point when I loaded up, it ran a disc check. I have run malwarebytes and don't have any viruses. Please help/advise! Thank you in advance.

I ran a health check and in the system service checks, it failed an Abnormally Terminated Services Check. Everything else checks out.

Hi all

I've come across this forum as I try to Google a solution to my problem and was wondering if anyone out there could help...!
I'm on a Samsung RF511 laptop with Windows 7. I'm able to sign in without problem to Safe Mode, and between that and a few other investigations, I think it's a problem with Windows rather than hardware. I manage to sign in to Windows, but then after a short while whilst it starts up everything gradually freezes and I have the twirly thing instead of the pointer for the cursor. Ctrl Alt Del doesn't open up the task manager either and the only solution is to hold the off switch down and start again. I've tried running a virus scan (Avast), but it crashes before it will open in normal mode and says it won't work in safe mode.

Some info (apologies if I'm being simple, my knowledge is limited!):
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel (R) Core i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz
8GB Memory

I found a previous thread that had some suggestions, but the solution wasn't something that would work for me. I did however see a recommendation to run a system scan using HijackThis and post the log, so I've done that in case it is any use. I'll post the log in the next message...

Thanks for any help!!!
