I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My computer starts fast enough, but it takes pretty much time to prepare the desktop (appearing of the icons, gadgets, rocketdock etc). After starting up, I just see my empty wallpaper for minutes :P The desktop was always the same, means the rocketdock, gadgets and icons were always there, and it used to load very fast before...but suddenly from one day it's taking too much time...

Maybe too many items are starting with Windows, so you need to do some "pruning" so that only essential items start that way. Nearly everything you install these days plants something in your startup list without asking you, so you need to keep it under control.

To see all your startup items in one place (instead of having to look in the various locations thay can be called from) install CCleaner from here:
Download CCleaner 3.13.1600 - FileHippo.com

Install it, open it, click the blue tooobox, click "Startup".
You can optionally disable, delete, or re-enable any item.
Only disable them though, in case you need to put it back.

My son-in-law and I both purchased new Gateway computers last July with Windows7. I created system repair and recovery disks however; he knows very little about computers and didn't do the same. I will have to admit I know little about the system recovery process since I have always had a windows installation disk for previous computers and have not had to fall back on the system recovery process so don't know exactly how it works.

I told him I would assist in creating a system recovery disk for his computer but wonder if it is too late at this date?

Thanks in advance guys.
I updated my AVG to 8 but was late doing it, I had a lot of trojans and spies but now my 'C' drive is not accessable, the start menu and desktop have lost a lot of program ikons, there is a virus alert in the time window which I can't remove and the wallpaper has turned white.
When I go> search > all files and folders, the 'look in' box has :Local Hard drives (), if I put in a search > *.* It returns a list of files and folders in either the C:\My Documents or C:\Documents and Settings folders, when I do the same search with 'Look In (C it returns the message: 'Local Hard Drives (C' is not a valid folder'.
I have searched this forum and found a similar problem and what seemed to be a solution from rob3394 but I can't start my computer in safe mode by tapping the f8 during start up.

A friend has just been round an fixed my problem but created another one which is: I now have permanently on the desktop Internet Explorer box similar to the one when you drill down from My Computer. The box has nothing in it but the taskbar/toolbar are off the screen therefore I can't shut it down, I've tried creating another folder and copying everything from the original so that the original can be deleted and hopefully get rid of the problem but it won't let me copy all the files.
I will also post this problem as a seperate issue.

How do I get the page break to force the grouped value to change?

I have found this BUG in Micrososft Word 2007, that I consider to be a SERIOUS ISSUE for Microsoft Office Suite.

If you copy an image from a website and paste in the Word file, the image pastes successfully the first time,
but as you go on & paste other images from the site,
the first image is repeated over and over again, in place of other images (which have the same dimensions).
All other text data remain same, the image titles remain same, but only the image is repeated over and over

So I woke up this mornind to login into my PC and see that my profile pic is changed back to the previous one. I have not any changes myself.

skype is linked to microsoft account. (skype had my old picture)

other option is that someone logged into my outlook and chaged profile picture then it got synced...

I cannot find any information on why or how picture would revert. ( even more so on a specific date )

any ideas or leads ?

Hello newbiew, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you Microsoft account is synced by default, then it most likely automatically changed back after syncing.

If you wanted to have the same user account picture for all devices, then changing it for everything should help.

If you only wanted to change it on this PC, then you could turn off syncing for Appearance under "Personalization settings" using the tutorial below.

If spammers already have your email address, is it too late to change it in any way or get a fake email address to throw them off?

A:Too late?

You could always get another address from your ISP or free from sites like Hotmail or Excite. I find it useful to have more than one for the reasons you are talking about...spam.

Installing a spam filter is an option as well.. One that seems to be popular is MailWasher: http://www.mailwasher.net/ and, it is free. Here are more programs: http://www.webattack.com/freeware/comm/fwspam.shtml

Depending on the security you are using, some provide methods of blocking spam. But alas, spamers are getting better at what they do!

I am a late adopter of Windows 8. I started with MS-DOS and eagerly bought each new iteration of a new OS and was fairly happy except for ME, a disaster for me, and Vista, which was lacking drivers. When Windows 8 was approaching I read articles, postings on forums, and saw pictures of the painfully cute "Start" page. I decided to wait.

My waiting ended when I bought a new little laptop last week. Of course, it had Windows 8. For two days I hated Windows 8. I struggled with a very different OS. I was very, very pleasantly surprised to learn that all of my legacy software that I deemed essential, even my 15-year old unabridged dictionary, loaded and ran without any problems. My Office 2003, which meets my needs, with Word and Outlook work fine. I had to re-install Windows 8 four or five times, I lost count, because of errors I made in setup. One gave me a "Start" screen with a third of the boxes only having color but no graphics and no labels.

On Day three it started making sense. I basically abandoned the "Start" screen and use the "Desktop" with the quick start toolbar just like I did with Windows 7.

I'm still learning my way around but it's quite workable.

I might finish learning Windows 8, now, about the time Windows 9 comes out.

But an imaging app is really necessary---not just an option, unless you like reinstalling everything and losing files .

I have been having problems with one of my computers for a few weeks. At this point, it reboots by itself and most of the time I can't connect to the internet. MS internet explorer stopped working a while ago and firefox was not connecting due to a proxy stoppage. I did not set it up to connect via proxy. It is running Windows XP Pro version 2002 service pack 3.

MS security essentials is the virus program and it has been ineffective. It has identified and removed several trojans multiple times and they just keep reinfecting. I was able to get it to boot in safe mode, at which time I used ATF cleaner to delete the contents of the caches.

Please tell me how to proceed. Thank you in advance for your help.

I am not on the infected computer at this time.

A:I hope it's not too late for help.

A:Been a bit lax of late and it's safe to say I got got.

Please download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Post that log in your next reply.

Ok.We also need to download ComboFix.exe.

My brother is having a problem at one of the sites he supports, and, since I have no DSL experience (DSL is like the Holy Grail in South Africa... highly sought after, but basically considered a myth) I am turning to you, my faithful brethern, to help out:

Scenario: Windows NT Small Business Server v4.5 running Exchange and Proxy
Server. Client has just replaced their dial-up Internet connection with a DSL
connection. Everything worked fine with RAS dial-up, but now:

Problem: Microsoft Exchange and Proxy start up before the PPPoE client software (EnterNet v1.4 from Efficient Networks) establishes a connection. Therefore, the Internet Mail Connector on Exchange will not send mail (it doesn't think there is a route to the Internet -- a restart of the service after the DSL connection is activated fixes) and Proxy server will not start (also because it cannot find an external interface -- a restart of the service after the DSL connection is activated also fixes).

Question: Does anyone know how I can configure this box so that Exchange and Proxy start up ok before the DSL connection, or get the DSL connection to start up before the Exchange and Proxy services?

Dear All

Last night I was at my friend's house looking at funny videos on Youtube (using Internet Explorer - a recent version I believe)

Whilst doing this I clicked a link to another video from the list of 'Suggestions' (down the right hand side on youtube). Then my friend informed me the Laptop (Dell) belonged to their parent's workplace.

I am now wishing I hadn't clicked the Suggested video as it may not be deemed appropriate on a workplace laptop. Even the title of the video could be deemed inappropriate.

I deleted the link from the website history. But I am now thinking I need to try and remove all traces of it from the laptop, which I will have the opportunity to do this evening, so I would really appreciate your advice on how to do this.

I cannot download any software on to this Laptop and I only want to delete any trace of the youtube Suggestion that I clicked.

Please help as I am feeling rather stressed about this :-( Lesson learned I think. Many thanks.

Creatine - Creatine helps out in 2 approaches: it can help one to carry more fat within the gym, consequently maximizing your workout by helping to carry nutrients that are desired for your Muscle Building Pills and it also aids recovery. You simply must consider Around 2.5 grams: Blackcore Edge around 5 grams of daily before and after training. It's genuine, and that I've seen it myself with my bodybuilding efforts. And not only did I workout less per-week, I even lower my workout time by 50 percent to only 30 minutes. Hi all,

On the first boot of the day Windows fails a few seconds into loading and I am presented with the choices to start in safe mode, select last known good install etc. When I select the last known good install windows open normally and it will start fine any number of times that day without a problem.
The next day it is the same routine. Sometimes I go through the sequence twice but Windows XP always manages to load in the end.
I have SP2 and all the updates.

Any ideas please

hello & welcome to TSF ,

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to sliptream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

I can teach you in One minute, main thing, use the right mouse button a lot, and place your cursor on the right side of the screen or right click on the bottom left corner, it's actually easier than Windows 7. Also if you're on the start screen just type what you're looking for.

ok how the heck do i find my fan size on my new/old computer case? im starting my own computer project and i got a free case, yippee, only problem is i dont know the fan size. I measures 80mm with a ruler inbetween the screw holes but i just want to check the proper way before i but this really cool fan for it. and i have no idea who made this case... no name what can i say i just got it today.

A:Fan Size? (before its too late)

Most common sizes are 80mm and 120mm. 92mm is also common but not as much as the previous two. If you measured your current space at 80mm then that's what you have. Fans are pretty cheap as well.

I have figured out how to download pictures from the Verizon Samsung Gusto. I saw pedroguy asked about this November 2010, but the thread died.

1) Download BitPim
2) Under "BitPim Settings", for Phone Type, choose "SCH-U750 (Alias 2)"

I don't know anything about BitPim, I just played with the settings until it worked.

I have a low spec Win 7 pro which I have attempted to upgrade to 10. It calculated that I did not have enough space (small HDD) and deleted some old installs to get the 20GB it needed (as I understand it). Started the upgrade at 9 am Friday and by 6 or 7 it had reached 99% complete. Now, 24 hours later, it is still at 99%.

I have read that 10 can take its time about upgrading, but 24 hours with no movement at all?

Do I need to do something, other than continue waiting?

A:One computer is very late to the party

It can take awhile sometimes, this seems too long, you might try rebooting and see what happens.
