T420s remains in sleep mode when I use F4 to put in sleep mode (after fan replacement)

Q: T420s remains in sleep mode when I use F4 to put in sleep mode (after fan replacement)

I just had the fan replaced, and now when I use F4 to put the laptop in sleep mode and then close the lid, it remains in sleep mode when I open the lid. Same thing occurs when I close the lid (no F4) for sleep mode and then open the lid. However, when I select Sleep on the Windows 7 Start Menu and close the lid, the laptop does resume when I open the lid. NOTES:- Before replacing the fan, I used F4 for sleep and resume, because when I close the lid I would sometimes find the fan running the next morning- BIOS is up-to-date- Keyboard and mouse are set to wake PC- Power Options Settings: - Allow hybrid sleep set to OFF and Hibernate set to NEVER (As they always have been) - USB Settings > Disabled USB selective suspend settings (These were enabled) While this isn't a huge problem, I would like to have things working as before, preferably without having to go back to the Lenovo certified shop. Thank you in advance for your help. Jeff

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 5 year old emachine with a wireless keyboard. For the past few months anytime I would use the sleep button on the keyboard the computer would sleep like normal but when you move the mouse to wake up the computer, the computer would power on but the monitor would show the RGB message. I would have to turn all power off and back on and everything would be fine. But when I came back to from being gone on the weekend it was already in the awake state with the RGB message on the monitor. Now when I try to power the system off and on it goes back to the same RGB message. Everything has power and all connections are good. Any ideas???

Good Afternoon,

We have had this fault a couple of times on differing units. The Ultrabook appears to be in sleep mode (flashing white power light) and no amount of power button pushing, keyboard clicking or mouse moving brings it out of this state.

Holding down power for 5 seconds does not switch the UltraBook off.

I have to wait till next day when the battery completely drains before starting the unit.

Is there any other way to power the unit off perhaps?

A:Portege Z10t-A remains in Sleep Mode

Actually this time around leaving the unit over the weekend hasn't helped. So I can't get into it at all.

Holding the power button in for 5 or 30 seconds achieves nothing. The Power button certianly gets a response becuase the screen will turn off and on.

I cases like these I would normall remove the battery but on this model its not very accessible.

Anyone know another secret way to force the tablet to power off?

Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

A:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

Hi KnightCa,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm really sorry to hear that your Lenovo W520 goes into sleep mode even after it has been disabled in Power management.

Go to Control panel - - >Power Options - - >Change plan settings (Choose the Power plan that you have selected) - - >Change advanced power settings - - >Adjust the settings under sleep and display as shown below.

Also, try doing a windows update and reinstallation of Power manager in your system.

If the above said didn?t help, try doing a registry editing.

1. Open the Start Menu. 2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter. 3. If prompted, click on Continue in the prompt. 4. In regedit, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F20\7bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca0\DefaultPowerSchemeValues.

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

Thanks

Hi,

Some softwares can stop the sleep request to work properly.

run cmd.exe as a admin (Click on start, type CMD, right click on CMD.exe and select run as admin)
then type the command
powercfg.exe /energy
This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

I like to put my computer on sleep so I can just come back to where I left it, but the past few days when I put it on sleep the screen would just go black like it was asleep, but the computer was still on and running like I didn't put it in sleep. Then when I move the mouse to come out of sleep it says "locking computer" and goes to my password screen (which is what it should do before going to sleep). I don't think its in the power settings because I've checked there and played around with the settings (I'm not technically challenged so I don't think it's something that simple lol).

Also, my touchpad scroll feature does not work (and has not worked for quite some time). It comes back when I turn the computer off and on again, but I only do that a few times a week. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad firmware so that isn't the problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215.

It's almost as if the sensor thinks the screen is folded shut completely and the laptop enters sleep mode.  Any ideas on what may ber happeneing? Thanks in advance.

The HP online support also does not have any answers. I have updated the BIOS and restarted the laptop countless times. The battery is not removable. Anybody else faced this issue and any solutions?  On a side note, Microsoft Excel crashes repeatedly since beginning. I've been using this Windows 7 Home system for some years. At first it used the CRT monitor I had for much longer than this system, then a used LCD monitor, now for the last six or eight months a larger used, but seemingly in excellent condition, Dell E228WFP.

My habit has been, for much longer than I've had the Win7 system, to manually put the system in sleep mode during the day when I expect to be away for any extended time. I turn it off if I will definitely be away for hours and turn it off over night.

The problem did not exist until this Dell monitor. I don't recall how soon after getting the monitor it started, probably not very long.

The system always come up working properly when first turned on but sometimes, when I awaken the system, the video is at a much lower resolution. Looking at the Windows Screen resolution, it says generic PNP monitor rather than the Dell. This is an annoyance but easy enough to fix, just click on Detect, and it switches back to the Dell at the higher resolution, the recommended 1680 X 1050, which is enough to suit me.

Starting perhaps six or eight weeks ago it sometimes instead woke up with a message
1: auto detect (analog input)
Cannot display this video mode
optimum resolution 1680 x 1050 60Hz

Sometime the first line instead says
2: Analog Input

The only way to get any video is to restart the system, which always came up correct from boot or reboot, just not from reawaken. If nothing was open when I put it to sleep, I can use the k... Read more

A:Sleep mouse during sleep mode?

Hello Jack,

You might check using STEP SIX in the tutorial below as a guide to see if you have a "Power Management" tab to uncheck the "Allow to wake computer" option in it for you mouse in Device Manager.

Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

If not, then you can use the STEP FIVE section to manually disable the mouse from waking up your computer.

Just be sure that you at least have the keyboard allowed to wake up the computer, or you will have to press the case power button to wake up your computer instead.

Hope this helps,

Hi, It's worth checking if the display is just being turned off after a certain period of inactivity - you can check this as follows. Right click on an empty area of the Desktop and select Personalize.  Click the Screen saver link in the bottom right.  In the following window you can adjust the time before the screensaver kicks in the  'Wait' dropdown menu to a more reasonable time and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen if you don't wish to have to enter the password again after the time you set in the 'Wait' box'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save the setting change. Regards, DP-K

Upon finishing my new PC, I decided to let Windows 7 update itself while I take a nap. After a half an hour I returned and rebooted the machine. Much to my horror, the integrated Ethernet had entirely ceased to function! Indeed, device manager no longer showed any LAN devices. Even more puzzling was the error message I received while trying to reinstall my motherboard's integrated LAN drivers:

The Realtek Network Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable.Click to expand...

"Wait ... what?!", I immediately exclaimed aloud. A few Google searches later, the problem was made quite clear. Apparently, integrated devices on several motherboards tend not to wake up after Windows 7 goes into sleep mode. The precise cause eludes me, yet one easy solution is as follows:
Turn off the PC
Switch off the power switch at the back of the PC if it a desktop. Laptop owners simply unplug the power adapter.
Wait a few minutes while the capacitors lose their charge and the RAM clears.
Turn on the PC and verify that the LAN or whichever device was giving the deep sleep error now works. If not, then you could turn off the PC and remove the RAM for a minute. (Don't forget to touch the PSU before handling the RAM, though!)

Now that you've fixed the immediate issue, let's prevent it from happening again.
Open up Device Manager
Right click the device which formerly gave the error.

Yes. The flashing power light is a good indication that the computer is indeed sleeping.

Ask someone that is in the office to wake it up - then you can connect and set it to never sleep. Let us know if you need help changing those settings.

It has been a while since I have used LogMeIn. I do not recall if those at your office can see what you see on the computer screen while you work from home. Hopefully, there is an option that lets coworkers only see a locked screen.

PC doesn't stay in sleep mode. Have regulated power options to comply i.e 'put the computer to sleep in 15 minutes, hybrid sleep off, never hibernate and disable wake timers'. Please advise.

A:sleep mode

If your mouse is set to wake the computer (as it usually is) and your floor is "shaky" or you live on a street where trucks habitually drive by, the vibration can shake the mouse enough to cause it to wake the computer.

When your system wakes itself you might open a command prompt and enter

Quote:

powercfg -lastwake

which should tell you what woke the system, if your OS version supports this command.

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 10 on it. When it goes into sleep mode, if I swipe the touch pad within a few seconds it will come out of sleep mode. However if I'm not at the computer so that it is in sleep mode for a while, then when I swipe the touch to pad wake it up sometimes it will wake up but sometimes it won't. If it won't wake up then I have to use the power switch to shut it off and reboot it. Anybody know what's causing this and how to fix it?

A:Won't come out of sleep mode.

Does it wake up when you press the space bar or return key? The wake by mouse could have been changed by an update, because of being too sensitive.

I recently aquired a dell demension 4700 tower. It worked fine until the next morning when the modem was in sleep mode. I normally would clicked the space bar and the CPU wakes up, well so I thought. My CPU is not responding to any of the following; reboot, disconnect/reconnect all cords, tried holding differnt key while rebooting, and changed out monitor. I believe the CPU is in sleep mode because the light on the monitor starts with green and then turns yellow. HELP? I read up on how to disable sleep mode, the problem is I can't wake it up.

A:sleep mode

Hi,

I have had a similar problem, with a friends laptop, what I did was remove the bios battery for a few minutes. Put the battery back in, started it up again and bingo job sorted.

How do I visually tell if my computer is sleeping o justr the display is turned off?I think the answer might be that the power light blinks when the computer is sleeping.Holly

A:IF IN SLEEP MODE?

@Holly2? You can control the sleep and display modes separately in Control Panel > icon > Power Options -- in many cases people do set the display to go off before the computer actually drops into sleep mode. And, yes -- sleeping computer will "blink" its power light. Depending on how you have it set up, you briefly click the power button to wake-up the computer or wiggle the mouse (external). When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

As of yesterday, the sleep mode will not work, and I cannot even shut down properly. Neither the Sleep button nor the Suspend under the start box works and that suspend box just stays on the screen. They both lock up. Can bring up other items, but the Suspend box stays on the screen. Can only shut down improperly from the tower.

I use sleep mode on my pc. How to close running program automatic, when I start sleep mod, like hibernate mod.I use shortcut for sleep mod.
Best regards

A:Sleep mode

So, you are using a shortcut to put your system in a sleep mode.
And you want a running program to be closed just before your system will get into a sleep mode?

Well, if you do not care about unsaved data (or if your program saves data automatically) I can write a cmd script for you, which upon its start will kill a particular PREDEFINED exe program or several programs running and after that it will put your system into a sleep or hibernation mod. Let me know if it will work for you.
