strange happening with video on XP

Q: strange happening with video on XP

In trying to fix an "audio, but no video" circumstance, I checked to see if I have all up-to-date codecs and players. I do. I ran the video through GSpot and it reported that the video was playable on my system. Still "audio, but no video." Then I put on a DVD, and it played fine. Immediately after that, I went back to various video files (avi, wmv, mpeg formats) and this time they ran fine too. The following day, after turning off my computer and then rebooting, once again I had the "audio, but no video" situation. I put on the DVD, as I did the day before, and once again, it triggered the video formats to begin playing fine. Something about playing the DVD is acting as a trigger to correct the video problem. Anyone have an idea about what it might be?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was at this site (techguy), went to click on the "go to forums" button and it took me to the PCPitStop site. Then the cursor turned into a circle with a slash through it. Then it changed back into my cursor, and it all happened again. Four times. Closed out my browser (Avant). Did a quick AdAware and Spybot, came up clean. Came back here and no probelms. Strange huh!!! By the way I do not indulge in the stuff anymore so I was not seeing things.

I get that a lot in TSG forum Dabwid - I find I don't have to stray far from the scrollbar with the mouse pointer and i'm in an advert on the right side of the page. Being inherently lazy, I'm sitting on a couch with my wireless optical mouse beside me on my right. On my left is a nine stone German Shepherd dog. A little movement from him or me and the mouse drifts just far enough to the left to miss the scrollbar completely.

Hi all. I have a new hp laptop that has 8.1 from the factory. No major problems but lately I noticed when its done booting up it automatically gets on the internet.

Also I've noticed I don't have to be on the internet (I've shut down the browser and back to my desktop), if I get an email, the pc will make a dig a ling sound and a little window will appear in the upper left corner of the screen as to who sent the email. I have no idea why this started. I haven't installed anything.

sounds like the internet is running in the background.

Hi, I have a rather unusual question if anyone can help me. I recently purchased a new computer. While surfing last night I had noticed that when I looked at the defrag drive my computer said that it had last been defragged on Jan.of 2005. Do you find this (as I do) somewhat strange. I have contacted the store and the computer manufacturer. Does it seem like maybe they sold me a refurbished computer when I was supposed to have bought a new one. Just looking for an opinion. Thanks in advance.

Hi eyore953, I believe the person who installed the OS had set the date wrong therefore as the strange result.

Another way you can find out is posting you specs so we can look at it and tell if it is built with '05 technology.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Do a defrag now and see what date it will say.

Ok so short story first, met this guy online on a game; he has never sent me weird links or sent me downloads to anything, all links he has sent me are ones I've known about and highly trust, imgur / reddit etc.

I've always had a weird vibe about him that he always seems to know what I am doing on my pc or what I've said to other people on Teamspeak, this isn't just once I get this all the time there is just something errie about the whole ordeal, I'll list some examples below.

- I can speak in private to an IRL friend on Teamspeak someone he doesn't know or communicate with, I know this for a fact and at some point later on I'll go talk to this guy he'll repeat certain words that just ring alarm bells. i.e; Picnic, chocolate eclair, samson go mic.. -- Just says it out in the open and it rattles me.

- I'll be doing something discrete on a game and he'll link me a meme picture relating to it, I ask him why he just linked me that picture randomally and he goes quiet?

- Relating to the same game, he managed to find out my in-game name and private messages me "sup" and this point I just knew something was off.

- Often enough whilst talking to him, I'll feel my cursor fighting against me on the screen for a second or two, this could obviously be a mouse fault but it happens a good 98% of the time when I am either talking to this person or shortly after he gets off.

This has been going on for months and I know what I've listed isn't exactly... Read more

When I leave my computer alone for a while (usually upwards of 45 minutes) and then return, I notice something very strange

Clicking on the Start button, the Start Search space has a series of "O"'s running across it.

Also I am unable to open any applications whilst this is happening.

My only resort is to reboot, and the problem disappears.

Any thoughts anyone?

yesterday I tried to download spybot search and destroy from one of its mirror sites (a german one) when norton went bonkers saying it had just blocked a trojan, but it said it so fast i didnt have time to jot down the name.

I couldnt download spybot and since then everytime i try to get to the microsoft website i get redirected to a site called hotchilli.com but the address bar says www.microsoft.com.

I have just done a full sweep with norton (did update profiles before) and it came up clean. I'm doing an adware scan but as I am unable to download spybot (tried to do it with cnet as well) I cant see what is going on.
PS

I have just attempted to download it again from cnet and this is the report norton gave me.

Norton has just blocked the following: sokets de trois V1 Trojan Horse.

Spybot is legit so why am I having these problems??????
any ideas??

Some time ago, I created a database at work, which is on a network so everyone who had rights to a certain folder on the network could use it. Everything has been fine until recently. The person who used it most, had problems (not related to the database) with her pc. Our IT dept, said something about her profile being corrupt, so they deleted it, and created a new one. Since then, although she can get into the database, she can't link up to the external tables that retrieve the data. It can't be the database, as because we have 'roaming' profiles, I can log on to her machine, using my logon, and use it without problems. Initially, we had to log on to an external server when using the database, to get access to the tables. Our IT can't work it out. IT's solution is for her to log on as me. This isn't an ideal solution. Everyone has access to my desktop, emails, documents. The IT guy is saying it's my database that's the problem, but how can I use it on her machine, but she can't? We've even tried, her logging on to my machine to use it, under her log in, but still it doesn't work. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas, as our IT don't.

A:Strange Happening with database

What type of database\version is this? What error message does she get? Can the user go to another PC and link the tables? Does she map network drives the same way? Are there ODBC connection/settings in play?

The computer still runs slow and will not read a cd when put into the cdrom drive. The device shows up in device manager.

We get an insufficient memory message sometimes.

Hello everybody.

Can someone please enlighten me on something?  Today and a few times in the past whilst I have been searching the net, my mouse pointer seems to have a mind of its own and moves around as if it is being used remotely by someone else - (example - you know when you call a help desk and they can connect to your computer and move the mouse to open applications etc...).  Also, and this is with the CD compartment open, the machine starts making that sound when a CD is starting up.  I am desperately hoping that it hasn't been hacked or infected.

Look forward to anyone able to assist me in this matter.

For the last couple of months now, I've noticed that my system, which has operated flawlessly for almost 2 years, started doing strange things:

SystemSuite 6 Pro - Uninstall goes thru the process of creating the uninstall database, resolves the links, then abruptly closes SS6.

Ad-aware SE - used to run thru the first 45,000 files rapidly, and never spent any appreciable time with the file counter not moving. Now it gets to only 12-1500 files and the HD starts chruning and won't stop; have to kill the program with task manager.

Word or Outlook Express - frequent intervals where I'm typing, but letters don't appear on screen until after a 10-15 sec. interlude -- like something is running and taking the full resources of the CPU.

SpySweeper and my SS6 antivirus programs indicate no spyware, no viruses. Here's a copy of the HighJackThis scan:

OK I have something that I can't figure out and it's been bugging me for a couple of months now.

Now this doesn't happen all the time but enough to get your attention.........................

When I click on a link in any of the forums that I visit such as http://www.techsupportforums.com it opens down on the taskbar but not on the screen.
But if I look up on the top left hand corner of the screen there will be a little black dot between the words BACK and FILE. If I put my cursor over the black dot a double ended diagonal arrow appears.
When I click it a little box opens up with the three squares that are on the top right of the browser. I can then drag it to expand it to full size.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

few things here: when i open up firefox a few pages wont load, one being yahoo and a couple others. under my task manager process tab, explorer is using about 30x more memory than it usually does. so i figured it try a system restore to about a week ago, but that wasnt sucesfull. so i tried to system restore in safe mode, but when i got the window open there weren't anymore restore points. and when i did it the first time there were about 6 scattered about in the previous 3 weeks. ***. i ran spybot s&d which came back with the message:

"Spybot-S&D has detected a system service that has been identified as a threat:
Displayed name: Command Service

It has been shut down. You can check it's status on the System Services Control Panel.

tried fixing the problem and that didnt work of course, told me to restart comp. which didnt work.

First off, this is not my computer, but rather my girlfriend's. Odd things have happened lately and I want to rule out any kind of malware/virus. Her calculator file has disappeared. There are times when she can't right click anywhere. Sometimes icons won't display. All you see is a hollow box where an icon should be. One day while doing some heavy 3d editing, my computer's Video card crashed. it recovered right away, but it seems that there is something with the icons that wasn't normally there. There appears to be a line around the outer border of some of the icons on the desktop. All of the icons in the image were there before and after the video card crashed, and the line remains around the icon or not around it, wherever it is moved. This occurs with and without Aero effects, and it both happens and doesn't happen to items that are placed on the desktop. After a restart, all items that had is, still have it, and all items that don't, still don't. I've attached an image of this to the post with icons that do, and don't have the line around it.

I figure it's more of a software than a hardware issue, and it's not a problem, just an annoyance. So if no one knows the issue here, I'll just end up dealing with it.

It's on a Windows 7 (obviously) 64 bit. Intel core 2 duo T6600 (2.2GHz 64 bit). It's the Toshiba Satellite A505 Laptop.

what program did you use?
it should of made a restore point or promted you to make one usually so restore back to before you performed the defrag.

I have to start off by saying my computer all together, but especially browsing, has slowed down considerably since the windows 10 update, don't care for it, ugh. I did some adjustments and got it running slightly faster. But my main issue here is the internet browsing. I first thought of the WiFi router that I had so purchased a good Docs 3.0. Still the same problem and other laptops (not running Windows 10) has fast speed.
I've been having slow page loading on any browser I try. If page takes too long, the page becomes various ads, for example: Windows 10 computer help, 'Talk to a live rep now' and the option to go back disappears... or I actually got an ad that popped up and said I believe "dumbass.com, check it out". Sometimes I can browse for awhile and it's good but other times it's every time I click on a link on any page. And these are trustworthy links. Some of the ads that come up make me wonder if Windows placed these ads...

Hi all - new to this 'ask a tech' questions as I'm usually pretty comprehensive towards computers, but now, I am totally stumped...

I have a strange Command.exe process going on upon starting computer... it transfers something and I've no idea what it is or how to stop it... this is the image to the command prompt: http://i65.tinypic.com/296c0ia.png

Anyone have any ideas as to what this is or how to stop it?
Also, upon trying to shut down, or restart my PC, I get BSoD saying; "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" but no error codes I've done sfc /scannow and showing no errors, tried to reset windows / restore but it won't because of this process error...

So I'm at a loss here... any advice would be a delight (apart from the ol' "reinstall windows" - as I already am aware of this being an obvious option)

Thanks in advanced.

See if there is some automatic configuration script you need to run to use the LAN. Also, which error do you get? Is it just the "Couldn't find page" error, or something else? Have you clicked the "Detect Network Settings" link on the error page?

Hi all,

First off, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium version 6.1 (build 7600) on a Sony Vaio vgn-nw235f laptop I purchased a year and a half ago. I can provide more specs if needed.

Recently I've been noticing small things that are messing up in my computer. Nothing major, but some examples are:

I can't change my desktop background. When I go into Desktop>Personalize, it shows that I have the new background installed, but it in fact hasn't changed. Also, my Firefox personas revert back to the previous one every time I restart the program. Things like that.

A few months ago I got a virus from a download that made a bunch of changes to my computer, but I have gotten rid of it a long time ago. Currently I have no viruses or spyware, according to a number of antivirus programs. I checked my C: disk a few hours ago as well, and it did not fix the problem.

Any ideas what could be happening?

A:Strange things happening - Need Help

I read somewhere that if you delete this .jpg and then try and change the background it should work. Can't remember where though but its worth a shout.

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper.jpg

As for the Firefox personas issue I'm not sure whats up with that. You may want to remove personas and reload it again. I love personas, I've used it for some time now.

Hi
After having completed a system restore a couple of days ago my PC is doing some strange and annoying things.
Firstly it has slowed down to a snail pace and sometimes when I click on an icon nothing happens (no egg timer appears).

When it has been on all evening and I want to access say Outlook Express or Google I get a message stating "Insufficient system resources to complete the requested service". When I try to shut down it seems to take forever.
My system is protected by up to date versions of AVG, Spybot S&D, ZoneAlarm, Adaware and Spyblaster

What is happening.

Thank you in anticipation

What was the reason you decided to do a system restore? That might be the key to understanding what is happening.

When I changed back to Opera, the net icons on my desktop all changed to plain white squares. So I thought, OK, just redo the links via opera bookmarks - same result. All of the correct icons have been replaced with a blank white box.

So I went into properties and tried to change icons, but only got the windows generic ones in sys32.

So I selected a globe of earth for FB and it put an icon of a little monitor with a bar underneath it, so I tried again thinking I had clicked the wrong icon, nope, just the same. Whichever icon I click on, the same one appears in desktop.

As I have had varying degrees of success with browser software, I am beginning to thing that the windows software itself is to blame. I keep windows up to date with updates etc, so it not the lack of, but something is not right at all with 8.1.

I never had this problem with any previous ver of Windows.

Out of curiosity, when you open those icons do they open their respective programs. I wonder if rebuilding the icon cache would help.

my computers been acting really weird lately. i dont know what it was but i think i downloaded a program that allowed me to change my wallpaper with ease or something like that because i wanted really nice themes and stuff. i didnt pirate it because it said the program was free and i didnt download off so sketchy webside. it was like deviant art or something like that. i could be completely wrong and it may be a different program. i play csgo quite often with my friends and stuff and then all of the sudden, every program on my pc closes. i dont think im doing a hotkey to close every program but im pretty sure im not because i use "wasd" to move and click with my mouse. also when i when i was looking at a image file the wallpaper somehow changed to that and i didnt press anything. also i have a few programs that require me to have administration powers or something to even open them. and my wifi gives out a lot and its specifically when im on the last round of the csgo match probably because the person doesnt want me to get rewards. any idea???

My operating system is XP Home. For the past couple of weeks, I have noticed a number of irritating and worrysome things happening on my computer. I have a hotmail account and a sympatico account, when I access them, after my sign in, the page freezes for anywhere up to 1 minute, and when I try to navigate around in the accounts, it freezes every time I click on another tab. I have also experienced subtle changes from time to time in my internet home page. Sometimes, it opens twice when I have only clicked to open it once. I have also had problems with a couple of other programs I have on my machine. Neither one has anything to do with the internet. For one I need the AUTOEXEC.NT file. I couldn't start my program and checked with Microsoft regarding the error message received. When I looked at my autoexec.nt file, the only changes I had to make was to capitalize some of the words. The program works with this file in the System32 folder. Unfortunately, if I shutdown or restart my PC, the file disappears and I have to put a copy back in the folder. I also had access violation error messages with another program. I have run virus scans with AVG, Adaware, PC Bug Doctor, Norton, Spybot S&D and also have Spyblaster. I did manage to catch 4 trojans with AVG, and have run all of these again and the system reports clean. Have no idea what to do. Could someone please help so my computer doesn't crash. I received the Blue Screen 3 times, but haven't got it since. I am not able to use the internet, it says I'm connected, but when I go on the internet, nothing loads up. I am also unable to open any programs.

The same day I was installing a Windows update for my computer, when I accidentally pressed shutdown on my computer causing the update to stop halfway through, which may be the cause of the problem.

Any suggestions, as I am really worried about my computer and need it to be working ASAP!

PS. I am part of a domain (School), so I do not have Admin privileges.

Thank you In advanced.
