Suggested sites keeps appearing

Q: Suggested sites keeps appearing

I have IE9; Suggested Sites keeps appearing on my toolbar, even though I have unchecked it in the options. Is there a way to prevent Suggested Sites from appearing?

Preferred Solution: Suggested sites keeps appearing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you right click in the top bar you can uncheck the Favorites bar, but also via Tools - Internet options - Advanced - in the Browsing section, ensure that the box for Enable Suggested Sites is also unchecked - Apply - OK

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

Tools | Internet Options | Advance | Reset

Hope this helps,

Another day, another pointless and waste of my life ie11 problem.
What is it today?  enterprise mode? Activex? nope, suggested sites.
Tell me why every user has 100s of suggested site links adding to their favourites bar? Also why are all of them empty. Just 100s of empty favourites called suggested sites.

How does this software get released.
This is the same in windows 10 as well, so don't come with that non sense about it being a windows 7 problem.

At least in windows 10 ie11 doesn't need 10 broken prerequsties and another 10 cumulative updates before it works correctly.

A:How can I disable Suggested Sites feature in IE 10?

How can search from the address bar be disabled?

In the Manage Add-ons Search Providers dialog you could disable Search Suggestions for your default search provider and optionally uncheck:  Search from the Address bar.   Related to this from the Options Contents tab you could
navigate to Autocomplete Settings and uncheck Use AutoComplete for Address bar.   I think it is probably Search Suggestions that is bothering you the most but you might not be liking the AutoComplete for Address bar feature too.  Otherwise
I think disabling Search from the Address bar means that you can't use the IE search feature at all, even trying an explicit question mark space (? ) prefix, which I think is more drastic than one might expect.  Disabling Search from the
Address bar also has the quirky effect of forcing the feature of allowing single-word Intranet names to be used without a protocol prefix, which is otherwise needed to bypass the user's default search provider when such connections are slow.

I want to infect me. This thing seems strange or crazy, but I would like to see how some malware behaves and also so that I can try to remove them. I need tips to infect me and sites that I can collect malware to analyze them (or rather, try to analyze them).

In the study of malware, need to keep me motivated and I do not infect me, I will not be motivated to learn how to remove infections.

I appreciate any help, and if they can not post links malware here, for obvious reasons, send me MP.

One of the primary goals of Bleeping Computer is to assist victims of infection with removal and to prevent the spread of malicious programs, not encourage them. Therefore, we will not provide links to malware or malicious sites where infections have been contracted and spread. Others reading this topic may use the information for nefarious purposes or an unwitting novice user may accidentally click a link and end up infecting their computer. For those and other obvious reasons, we are not going to provide specific information in a public forum and by policy, we don't provide assistance via PM. However, you can perform a Google search on "how to infect your computer on purpose" which will provide information such as this article. You can also read this topic which explains the most common ways malware is contracted and identifies the types of sites where you can easily get infected by not following the advice provided to protect yourself. If your intention is to infect a VM for the purposes of testing, be aware that not all malware will work in that environment. Malware writers have been able to create malicious files which can detect if it is running in a VM. When that detection is made, the malware is able to change its behavior by not running any malicious code which can infect the operating system. This is a deliberate technique to make analysis/detection more difficult for security researchers who use VMs to study infections in order to understand the methodology used and f... Read more

I am running windows xp pro sp3 with IE8. I have tried everything to try and remove the Bing browser and it keeps returning no matter what I do.
Does anyone have a fix for this.
Thanks in advance.

A:how to permanently remove Bing and Suggested Sites

EDIT: I just remembered something where you may not have to do any of the below. I never use IE so it slipped my mind. Go into IE's options, programs, manage add-ons. Right click any crap you see there and remove it if possible or disable it if removing is not an option. I would still go to add or remove programs and see if there's any crap there.

Well, try going into add or remove programs and uninstall IE8 and any other entry with Bing or MSN. You will have to reboot afterwards and will be back to IE6. Download Internet Explorer 8 and install it. This is the original version without all that crap. When installing, have it download updates. When finished you will be asked to reboot. Go to Windows Update and run a scan to make sure everything is up to date.

To disable suggested sites, first back up your registry by following the instructions below.

Please visit http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/, download and install/unzip ERUNT. Run ERUNT, click OK at the Welcome dialog, accept the default values that are pre-filled in and pre-checked, click OK, click yes and OK when it's done.
To restore the backup at a later date, navigate to the ERDNT folder in your Windows directory, open the folder with the date you want to restore from and then click ERDNT.EXE. It will restore your registry but it needs to reboot to do so. When it asks you to do so, click yes.

Once you've backed up the registry, merge the attached reg file by double clicking ... Read more

Since the recent upgrade to Windows 10, my history, favorites and Bing suggested sites are visible on the address bar.  I tried to remove this thread, but I was not successful.  I was directed to Group Policy and the page suggest that my computer
is covered under a corporate restriction, but this is my personal laptop and my internet service is provided by Spectrum, which includes a TV Streaming package.  Does the Streaming package allow Spectrum to attach a Group Policy to my laptop?  If
not, I need clear instructions on how to remove any superfluous or hidden restrictions from my laptop I did not give permission to restrict or make available for sharing with anyone.  Please be advised that through this service (Spectrum), I have experience

Hey All,

I created this thread that can hopefully serve as a FAQ about these new features of IE 8, how they work, how they are the same and different. I have modified my Favorites Bar to remove the Suggested Sites icon, because I personally don't care to have recommended sites downloaded when IE is not running and IE 8 gives an "Are you sure?" as to whether or not you want to turn "Suggested Sites On." I am just learning the +'s and -'s of these new features.

If any users want to give an overview, positives, negatives, or personal experiences with these new features or ask questions about them, please post here, Thanks for your help!

My computer is suddenly not showing some web pages correctly. This site (techguy) is in black, red and blue text on a bright white background. When I tried to view my granddaughter's myspace page, I couldn't see any of her pics. I only saw outlined squares with the text below them. Other sites (I first asked about this at the Mozilla forum) it looked as it should. I now think it has nothing to do with my Firefox browser as I have the same problem with IE. At first I thought I might have accidentally changed a setting in Firefox Options, but I have compared my Firefox settings to my husband's and they are all the same.
Any ideas as to what has changed?

Thanks

Hi there,

Hi All,

I am afraid that I am in need of your help again, recently I have noticed that I am seeing adults only adverts appearing on normally innocuous websites.

I think that these may be originating from my own machine, for example I have a link on my own website front page at www.euadvantage.com which links to the world of warcraft site here

I have attached an image of what I see, now I know that they do not normally have adverts of that nature on that site so, with this in mind I have included my hjt log, I should say that I have run spybot s&d and this said there were no problems found.

I had been having problems such as redirecting google links to happili.com and nginx 404, which were cleared up by a thread I created earlier. Ran Malwarebytes to death, TDSSkiller, and aswMBR, as well as ESET online scanner and mini toolbox. There are still a couple problems that remain though.

1) Images refusing to show on specific sites. When I right-click and view the images, it leads to a nginx 403 forbidden site. This seems to specifically affect the sites mangafox.com and mangareader.com, where some images show and some don't. The ones that don't are tabs that I have had open while I started getting viruses and whatnot.

2) Getting logged out of websites where I checked the "stay logged on/save session" option. Yahoo, this site, I have to re-log into a site every time I close out of the browser.

Both these problems affect Firefox and Chrome. Help is much appreciated.

Hi, I am using an HP windows 10 desktop computer, HP deskjet printer, and Serif craft artist software
I have been successfully using these together for over a year, and have previously created new forms in the control panel, so I can print on different size card and paper.
Today, when I went to print my design, it was letting me select the correct paper size as normal, but then would not apply it.
I went to the control panel to check the sizes, and created a new form, deleting the old one - but now it does not come up as an option to print this size in the forms
The size is still visible when I look on the printer settings within the control panel though - so why is it not visible to select when I try to print?
I have tried re-starting my computer and re-launching the software a couple of times now, but nothing changes.
Please can anyone help? Many thanks, in advance :)

A:Suggested Hjt Log

Hello healing41 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Fragmentation isn't really a malware issue. It is just a natural occurance that happens over time. XP has a built-in defragmenter and there are many 3rd party disk-defragmenters. It is good to defragment a drive occasionally but unless the disk is heavily fragmented and the free disk space is less than about 10% of the drive there will probably not be a noticible performance improvement. The 2 files that will have the biggest impact from fragmentation are the swap file and the Master File Table which can only be defragmented with 3rd party defragers. NTFS file systems handle file fragmentation better than the old FAT system found on older operating systems like Win98 so an acasional defrag with the built-in XP utility should be Ok.

Cheers.

I have the Inspiron 3520 with i3-2350M processor. I am currently using a single 8gb DDR3L stick in this machine that was originally bought for another laptop, but it seems fine. Would there be any issue with buying the matching stick and upgrading to 16gb? Are there known issues using low voltage ram in this machine instead of the stock? Thanks.

I noticed that my firewall settings were set to OPEN/ALWAYS/EVERYONE (essentially).  I thought, "That can't be right...that's not safe at all",
So I disabled/blocked about half of my incoming rules.   Which was immediately changed back by an unscheduled update less than an hour later.
I made screen shots of my firewall settings.  *Windows Remote Management is set to YES  PUBLIC ALLOW  SYSTEM  ANY TCP and ANY /ANY /ANY.
Peer to peer collaboration has the same settings, specifying %System...% as the part of my PC that is open to the public.  (And yes, I'm sure these are the default settings, I wiped and reinstalled offline. If you close or block your ports, they will
be overridden in minutes (including the ones marked "No Override".

I downloaded Spybot 2.5 which detected backdoor knocking on SAM, and attempts to logon without a password.  Defender did not have a problem, as elevated permissions, impersonation, persistent logon attempts using alternate credentials is business as
usual for WIN 10.
Further, all of the choices I was given regarding how  to receive updates/reboot times/and which apps can access my personal data (pictures/docs  -  webcam/mic) are set to "**** yeah!"
So, basically, Windows 10 is a GYN is the front, and a back port Proctologist.
Anyone else think this odd?
Is there a solution...or...?

I run a Dell 550mhz with 128mb ram,
Computer runs extremely slow and hangs.
ZoneAlarm was NOT RESPONDING, so I removed it.
Internet Explorer and Mozilla errors - NOT RESPONDING

So....
I ran SPYBLASTER
I ran SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY
I ran AD-AWARE
I ran REGISTER PATROL
I stopped almost all programs from beginning at startup.
I removed programs not used.
I defragmented the disk.
I removed ZoneAlarm, as it seemed to be part of the problem (NOT RESPONDING).

But now the slowness has returned so....

I ran Hijackthis, and here's the log:

Hello......
Just to clarify, you have only 128MB of memory? What operating system do you have? Also, you most definitely need an anti-virus program at all times.

Edit: Sorry I just saw you have WinXP for an OS.

Not sure if I have put this in the right place but here goes
1. Browser Choice. In Europe we get this option. But when it is taken (I stayed with IE10) the Browser Choice App remains and I cant get rid of it. There seems to be no means to uninstall it. Tried various sites on the web nothing works.
2. In the useful tutorial on backup using W7 recovery in Control Panel there is an option to backup system image to an external drive. I have one @1Tb but it starts then says cant proceed drive full - when it clearly is not. Any ideas? Is it not possible to backup the system image to SkyDrive ?
3. I do not use the Start Screen (Metro) as such but do put into it useful stuff that I need at odd times eg Administrative Tools. There seems to be no way to resize or recolour the tiles apart from "large" or "small". This is a nuisance as it gets too big to fit the screen. I found a site on the web that says it does this but my Rapport tells me it is unsafe so I have not tried it.
4. Is there a way to sort a block on the start screen(Metro) alphabetically without dragging tiles around one at a time.
5. A tutorial on each of these would be grand. I have found tutorials truly useful generally.
Thanks
Brian Winch

Hi friends,
I am an exclusive FF user (except for MS sites ).
I found a very good extension for FF which I would like to share with you. Its called Flashblock 1.5.1. Go to Mozilla homepage>extensions and search with above name. You will find it.
It stops all the flash materials on an webpage and gives you an option to allow it to play it or not. As most of the flash materials are AD so it also increases your security.
My yahoo pages are loading lightning fast now. Try it & LoL.

A:Suggested Extention for FF

Thanks src. Another one you might want to install for extra security is NoScript which blocks all javascript, and has an option to block flash as well. It puts an icon in the status bar which you can click to allow java/flash for a particular site if required.
