Fingerprint stopped working after latest Drivers and Windows updates (Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen)

Q: Fingerprint stopped working after latest Drivers and Windows updates (Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen)

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Title says it all really. This stopped working after the last major Windows 10 update (the one that introduced the three-finger horizontal scroll for scrolling through active applications). All other gestures seem to work OK, only the 2-finger scroll gesture has stopped working. I have all the latest updates installed, and all the latest drivers.

Hi!I see there are a lot of questions regarding the Radeon Video Display drivers.Anyone else experience this:After the latest patching of the Radeon video drivers last week (12th. of August) my screen turned black. If I try to reboot the display freeze after about 15 seconds - during the boot process (with the dots going around under the HP logo!) It took some time before I realized what was wrong, so I completely reinstalled the Windows 10 OS twice. So this is what happens:- I completely wipe the HD with a new Windows 10 installation.- I get a notification that the Radeon video driveres is not optimal.- And after about 20-30 minutes the screen goes black.- If I try to reboot, the machine is stuck on the HP logo with the dots going around! I did this procedure twice before I understood that nothing is actually wrong with the computer. The second time I managed to change the boot procedure so I could press F8 and push the machine into Safe boot. So now the goal is to find correct drivers, and downgrade in Safe mode. Anyone tried that? Is there a trick, maby download the drivers on another machine and bring them over using a USB stick? Kind regards,Jarle

The fingerprint reader on my ThinkPad L380 suddendly stopped working. I tryed resetting the saved prints in Windows Hello but when trying to register them again the procedure stops at the second step: for the first step of the registration when I touch the sensor it is recognised, but for the second step when I touch it nothing happens. The driver is updated and the system does not register any problem. Is it possible that the fingerprint reader is physically broken?

A:Fingerprint reader stopped working (ThinkPad L380)

The circuitry might have failed.  I would first try to reset everything:

1) Turn off fingerprint option in windows hello
2) Boot into BIOS and erase fingerprints (under security menu)
3) Uninstall the fingerprint reader under the device manager
4)  Reboot and let it find new hardware

You would then need to re-register the fingerprints

If that doesn't work, I would assume a hardware problem

Hey,I've recently installed windows 7 on my t530 because in win10 I couldn't use fingerprint reader cz there's no suitable driver available. So back on windows 7 I installed all the latest drivers from lenovo support site. Fingerprint Reader works perfectly! Now I got like 180 Updates installed. After reboot my fingerprint reader didn't work anymore. I can open the fingerprint tool but the green led is not glowing anymore.in device manager everything is ok. latest driver installed, detected as biometric device.  also it's listed in system settings.I checked my BIOS settings and clicked on "reset fingerprint data" and also disabled the device and enabled it back.nothing seems to work.. is there any solution? Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

HI there I am having a peculiar problem. The right-side USB port (the one next to the Ethernet port) of my 3rd Gen X1 Carbon (model 20BT) has stopped working. Windows reports two USB controllers, and Linux does the same. The ethernet port works as expected. I even replaced the USB/RJ45 system card and the problem persists: The Ethernet port works, the USB port does not. No peripheral is being recognised (I have tried a wireless mouse, a usb flash drive and a Yubikey) and no power seems to be available from the port.  I was thinking that if there was some issue with the motherboard then one of the USB host chips would not be recognised, but this does not seem to be the case. I am now thnking whether it would be worth it to replace the motherbaord or just purchase another (used) machine. The warranty has expired. Any ideas? Thank you! Frixos

My config: 8550u, 16gb ram, 2560x1440 HDR panelLatest drivers on all the components, everything is kept up-to-date via lenovo vantage windows app. This behavior happens with and without Intelligent Cooling option in lenovo vantage I have noticed that updating to latest intel hd graphics driver 25.20.100.6472 (either via windows update DCH drivers - which are enforced by the way - or via lenovo support website ) my laptop is not working properly anymore -> I get constant stutters / freezes of around 1-3 seconds (tried with both wired mouse and touchpad). This freezes generally occur shortly after the system boots - mainly after 5-10 minutes after the boot time, then they occur regularly and never stop. It's also curious that any action done during the freeze period will register after the  mentioned 1-3 seconds delay. The only workaround I have found is to use Rollback driver to version 24.20.100.6223 from device manager for the intel hd graphics, so this tells me that most likely there are issues with the latest drivers from Intel and my Lenovo x1c 6th gen.  I will be more than happy to provide any needed logs, however I am not that technical myself and don't know where to look.

Hi
Have seen several posts but no solutions. After a windows 10 update a couple of months ago, the fingerprint scanner stopped working. It recognises me but then says "your credentials could not be confirmed".
Microsoft have sent endless messages blaming the driver, the scanner etc etc. Finally they say it is an issue with the update, but they have not solution at this time. Good old Microsoft and their helpful updates, which you cannot avoid.
Anyone have the same problem and how did you fix it??

Hello. . .
I use the fingerprint reader to login to my Latitude E5550 every time.  However, I was unable to do so after the latest Windows 10 update (version 1607).

It did still show in the Windows Device Manager (i.e., no "Unknown Device" listed)
I went into the DDP Console to try to register a new fingerprint (for troubleshooting), but it wasn't reading the swipes
I attempted to update to the latest firmware/drivers, but that only caused unknown devices to show up in the Device Manager (ControlVault Firmware v3.3.15.0 and ControlVault Drivers v3.3.14.68)
Switched back to the older driver (v3.0.48.26) and all devices were once again recognized

Any suggestions for how to get around this?  It's not the end of the world, but I *really* like using the fingerprint reader (I paid extra for) to login.  If I can provide additional helpful information, please let me know.
Thanks!

In September 2017 I ordered and received my ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th gen laptop.  So far I have found the computer to be outstanding, with one enormous and seriously troubling flaw:  the trackpad / touchpad mouse.  While I have not had the issues with the mouse/arrow suddenly disappearing or freezing, I have found the trackpad to be incredibly tempermental.  For example, when working in Word with tables and you attempt to widen or narrow the width of columns, it is incredibly difficult to easily position the mouse/cursor over the bars of the columns.  Using the trackpad, the pointer will stop moving as you move your finger across the trackpad, but then you move your finger just the slightest bit more, and it moves right over the place where you want the arrow/cursor to be. For example, if I roll my finger tip left or right (not move it, just roll the tip of my finger) the cursor will sometimes respond and other times will not.  It is this gentle rolling that is needed to get the cursor in just the right spot sometimes - but no, not with this laptop. This is a problem in every application i've used thus far and it makes the computer absolutely inferior to my last ThinkPad (T430S) which had an oustanding trackpad that was easy to maneuver and very friendly to the touch.  I have loaded all the latest drivers for the computer and specific ones for the touchpad, but they have not resolved this problem.  I am a professor at a university an... I hope someone can help fix this issue I have all the family ready to string me up. The laptop will not start. I've tried most things but to no avail. Thanks in advance. When the power on button is pressed the green light comes on, the keyboard backlights briefly flash, the fan spins up for brief instant, if I listen very closely with the back cover off I can hear the speakers hiss with noise, and (if I have reset the machine) 2 tiny red LEDs on the F1 and F4 keys flash once. The power light remains green but then nothing happens. If I turn it of I get a sharp pop sound from the speaker. When I plug in the AC adapter the power light flashes 3 times. So far no update has been determined to be the cause. Could a NETFramework update cause such a problem?

I bought a 6th gen X1 Carbon in November for $1258 (after tax). Last week the speakers stopped working. I rebooted it, there was a wierd noise, and it never turned back on. I was unable to ever get it back on. I sent it into the Depot and their response was that it had water damage and we would need to approve billing for the following components:LNV-00HW562FRU Yoda-2 Audio Subcard-JYT1LNV-01YR210PLNR WIN i7-8550U 16G TPM21LNV-01YR421ASM Case Base Cover Black1 The total repair would cost $733, nearly half the laptop's cost. I asked for pictures, and they sent me one: Picture I've never spilled anything on the laptop (only 5 months old) and it has been used on a desk away from liquids, so I have no idea how this happened (or if it happened). My questions are: 1. I escalated the request, but what other options to I have to fight this?2. Could this picture have an alternative cause that would be covered under the warranty? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi! I have recently purchased a Thinkpad L480 and the fingerprint reader only worked very breefly after setup. Now, whenever I try to setup my fingerprint in windows hello the device seems as it would recognize a fingerprint without a finger on the reader (reader is clean). The fingerprint setup assistant shows a short flashing of the fingerprint icon as it would recognize a finger and then continues with only painting the innermost line of the fingerprint red and stops to detect any input. As mentioned breefly after windows setup the fingerpringt scanner worked. After a relog the scanner stopped working. I tried deleting and setting up a new fingerprint, when the problem first occured. All drivers are up to date. The latest windows version is used. Thanks in advance!
