Q: windows updates on vista (problems)

hi , i am not able to install updates , i mark the files for updating install and go through all the things like restart now etc when it come up with installing 7 of 100% complete please do not turn or unplug computer , then straight after that it says not configured propely reverting back to the old updates...

i just purchashed malwarebytes the paid version so i could have real time protection , and after looking at several sites some say it could be because of spyware , antivirus or firewall etc why it is not installing

none of my firewall setting have been touched or my antivirus but as i upgraded to the paid version of malwarebytes i thought that might have something to do with it so disabled the real time protection but it still does not install

security updates kb971486, kb974571, kb975467

microsoft. net framework2.0 service pack 2 security update for windows vista service pack 2 and windows 2008 service pack 2

they are the updates that will not install

if any1 could give me some help/advice it would be gr8 but nothing to technical please lol

Preferred Solution: windows updates on vista (problems)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Everytime I start up my laptop I get an error message telling me that there is an error with sprtcmd.exe - bad image, also windows installer is starting right before that which then leads to that error message, another problem that it is causing is it will not allow me to uninstall or install anything with windows installer or any type of updates, and windows update fails searching for any updates. Ive tried installing the updates manually that doesnt work and ive all used the windows installer utility which wont work because it is telling me that windows installer is already running. Hi,

I recently got a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista 32 home premium installed.
Every time ANY Windows update is installed my Windows Mail contacts list becomes unusable, issuing the message 'unable to choose recipients'.
The only way around it that I know of is to backout to before the updates.
Other sites have recommended backing out specific updates but it's ALL updates - I've tried installing/removing them one by one and the issue occurs on each one.
I do NOT want to go to Windows Live and I don't want to pay for a new version of Outlook. Is there ANY way around this problem? Microsoft don't seem to be bothered in fixing it.

Recently I had to re-install Vista on my machine. To my surprise even after installing 3 times update problems majorly 8024200D were there. So, I searched here n there on net including this forum but of no process worked. Hence, I decided to go for another installation. Here I will be discussing what I have observed:-

1) Installation : Something changed from Microsoft hence please install Vista as fresh and do not install any driver and/or application except LAN Drivers otherwise, you will face too many error messages during updates. Even after installing LAN driver you might get error# 80070103 but you may ignore this as this is only due to old drivers error.

2) Update : Keep updating your windows till it says no further update available. Please do not use internet except updating your windows otherwise your PC might get infected.

Surprisingly, Original Windows Vista DVD (without Sp1 or SP2) is of around 4GB and updates are of around 2GB and it will take minimum half a day to update your system 100% with good internet speed (minimum 2MBPS).

SP1 is of around 750MB and SP2 is of around 350MB and rest updates are of around 1GB+.

If you have to re-install your OS once or twice a year then you should make image of your system otherwise, updates gonna increase in future and you will be spending hell of the time in updations.

Hello and welcome to the vista forums.

I am going to assume that you have the full version of winds. Since you have done 3 installs I would suggest doing one more but like this.

I would do a full scan with your AV...
Download and run a full scan from malwarebytes free version...

I would aslo do a sfc scan and here's how...
System Files - SFC Command
If the sfc comes back with problems then run the sfc 3 times, the sfc scan can fix many problems on your computer...

Please help! I have had problems installing several updates for Vista x64 Ultimate. I installed kb937287, kb943302, kb943899, kb964041 updates successfully, but when I restart they still appear in Windows Update list. I tried installing .Net 3.5 sp1 update kb951847, but it fails with error code 57.

Also, when Vista loads it gets a blue screen with either 0x0000007E or 0x000000A error codes. It takes several attempts to get Vista loaded. I tried a bunch of fixes, but none of them worked. I tried loading the System Readiness Tool, but I can not locate the file to run it. I tried loading several updates realted to those errors, but I get a mesage saying the they don't apply to my system.

I've just been looking through the first four or five pages of thread topics and I keep stumbling upon problems which I've come across recently.

For the last 36 hours or so, I've been bouncing around the web trying to solve my problems and they all come back to the last batch of critical updates released through auto updates from Microsoft. I've posted about my problems on this thread, page four at bottom (sorry, can't work out direct link).
HTML:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/683606-vista-sp1-auto-install-problem.html
In all this web bouncing the problems I'm seeing on these threads have been mentioned in relation to the updates and I'm wondering if many of the problems reported here are down to this.

Anyone here who's willing to have a look through the threads and see if these problems are linked? The updates started being released around the tail-end of January, but most of the problems really hit in the last few days. Some people seem to have got the batch of updates piecemeal and are OK, others got them all at once and Vista fell over.

I've gone back on this site to about 15th Feb and I'm seeing Vista boot problems (stuck in endless reboot cycles etc), password problems, missing files, HDDs not being seen.

I'm not very savvy when it comes to computers, so I don't know that I would recognise some of the weirer issues. I'm really only familiar with the problems I've experienced or read ab... Read more

I'm not a Windows user myself although generally familiar with Windows. A friend asked if I could fix his laptop which runs Vista as it had become infected with "MS Removal Tool" malware.

I followed the instructions on this site for its removal to the letter and everything appeared to go according to plan. Then, having deleted the old HOSTS file and replaced it with a new one I attempted to reboot. At this point Vista ran a number of updates (13 in total) which I allowed to complete.

The reboot went OK in the sense that there was no sign of MS Removal Tool still being active but there are a lot of problems. I'm unable to launch Task Manager, the blue screen appears having hit CTL-ALT-DEL but on selecting Task Manager there is some disk activity but nothing else happens and no Task Manager appears. Clicking on Control Panel from the Start Menu also does nothing. So does right mouse clicking on My Computer. Attempting to go back to a Restore Point doesn't work either. Trying to run most of the installed programs does nothing although I am able to run Internet Explorer and connect to the internet. Trying to run gpedit.msc also does nothing except a Search results window appears. Interestingly, if I click the Control Panel icon found under Folders on the search results screen the Control Panel icons appear. However, clicking on the individual CP icons appears to do nothing.

Hi Guys

What a 5 days i have had with Windows Update started last Tuesday when i did not receive any
updates as per usual and have been trying ever since.
When i check for updates all i get is Windows is checking for updates and it go's on and on for
hours without any success at all.
I have not even received the monthly Microsoft software removal tool which we all get every month
and funny this i have already received it on my XP desktop computer.
My windows update agent is up to date and running same for the bits also running.

This morning i was told by Microsoft on the phone that Windows Updates for Vista has now finished
so there is no more, is this correct has anyone received updates this month on vista as usual i would be
very interested to know because according to there website support for vista does not end until the
17th April 2017 think i have been fogged off here.
Sorry i have other topic's on the subject but it has been a very painful and tiring weekend getting no

Windows Vista SP2 will continue to receive security updates until April 11, 2017.

I'm not surprised at all that you're having the same issue with Windows Vista.

Well, I was installing a rather LARGE batch of IMPORTANT/recommended updates, and I canceled them. The error code is 8024000B, BUT, I don't think that means anything, that error code just means the update has been canceled. I've tried restoring hidden updates, doesn't work. My question is, how do I install canceled updates (No failure to install, no error, etc). Do NOT tell me to go to microsoft download center. The download center is crap, every time I try to install there, it says, this update does not apply to your system.

I have a Windows 7 machine and a Windows Vista machine. I do the Windows Updates on both machines manually, and at the same time. It seems like the Vista machine always finds fewer updates than the Windows 7 machine. For example, I updated the machines last week and the Vista machine only found maybe 5 security updates, and the Windows 7 machine found over 20 security updates.

Now today I went to Windows Update on both machines to get that critical Internet Explorer update that has gotten a lot of attention. The Windows 7 machine found it, but the Vista machine didn't find it!

Why isn't the Vista machine getting all the updates?

Hi,

Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice.
I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load.
I got a black screen with the following message

file name : NTOSKRNL.exe
status : 0XC0000098

Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt

Then it advised me to reboot from the cd and repair the program.
Which i did, and then instantly turned off automatic updates, as i didnt want to risk the same thing happening again.

And it seemed to be working fine, for about 2 months i guess.
A couple of days ago, it happened again, despite me not allowing any updates.

So i repaired windows via cd (which takes about 15-20 mins!) and went into my updates section and checked that they were set to "check for updates but ask for permission to install", which is how it was still set.
So i tried rebooting a couple of times just to see if it started back up ok and it worked.
Until yesterday.
Each time i repair windows it works until i turn it off, when i shut down my pc i get a message saying "configuring updates stage 1 of 3"
Stage one takes forever, stage 2 takes about 2 seconds and stage 3 never seems to happen.
And then when it reboots it tells me

file name : NTOSKRNL.exe
status : 0XC0000098

Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt

And i have to repair from the disc yet again.

Also I have Daemon Tools and had 4 drives being emulated and those also have the exclamation mark over them.

None of these show up under My Computer folder.

I already tried uninstalling the updates but they still stayed the same. It is showing windows drivers for the driver on the devices.

Any ideas other than trying to find the correct drivers for them? That is what I will do right now...but I have no idea what I can do for the virtual drives...already disabled and enabled them but no luck getting them to be recognized properly.

I'll just quickly say exactly what happened. As i was playing a game, vista closed at approx. 3 am. and began to shutdown. It then showed that it was on step 2 of 3 for an update and was configuring the update. After this was complete the pc shut down and restarted. I saw the bios load and even got to the green loading bar. The screen then went black for a brief period. A small flash occured and my monitor went into "sleep" mode (Dell LCD monitor, the button went from green to orange). Nothing would wake it up. I restarted in safe mode and went with a system restore from about 2 weeks ago ( or as far back as i could go) and when it restarted after restoring i had the same problem. I have no way to install a new driver for my video card because safe mode won't let me install anything. Anyone know what could be up or what my options are? Now it is configuring updates and is at 3 of 3 100% and has been like that for a while. Like at least an hour now prob. It also says "Do not turn off your computer". But maybe that would help and restart it in safe mode? IDK Someone please help! PLEASE!

What are Nvidia nForce networking controller and Nvidia nForce Serial ATA controller?

Should I download optional updates? How does one decide when to download an optional update or not? I know that I need to know what there function is first, but then is it always best to download the optional update.

I really appreciate the help.

A:Vista Windows Updates -Optional?

Those are driver updates. Never download driver updates from windows update unless the driver is for a microsoft product. Even then???

I have had the updates fail and leave me without sound once and an internet connection once. If you want to update a driver, go to the manufacturer's site to do it.

my PC is telling me I have important updates to install however when I do nothing happens just shows 0% updated, there are no error codes showing. It then freezes and I have to shut down and reboot again. for some reason I can get into windows photo gallery but when I double click on a picture it doesn't open and freezes again!!!

I have tried to delete photo's and unwanted files to see if that would help as I read that the hard drive might be interfering with the updates. This has not worked.

this is really frustrating can anyone please give me some advice on what i need to do thanks

Since about 5/1/12 I've been unable to get Windows Security Updates KB2656409/2660649/2688338 on my Dell XPS M1530. I've troubleshot up through running SFC, which indicates there are some corrupt files it could not fix. I've successfully got other updates in the interim.

Please advise.

Hello

I did not do the Aug 12 update package that seemed to jam things up
for many others. However, given the chance -- I would have. Came back
from trip and have 35 updates waiting. None will go.
Tried solving via Windows help pages. No go.

My acer laptop(vista 32 bit)is currently having a lot of problems after i installed two windows updates. I am only able to connect to the local internet on it(it constantly says it is identifying my wireless router), the diagnostics policy service is not running and every time i boot up, when i get onto my home screen i get a message saying" Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device". I have also had a "System event notification service" error and a problem with the internet where it said something along the lines of "connection status unknown the dependency service or group failed to start".I fixed these with the following codes under CMD promt:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
net localgroup administrators localservice /add
net localgroup administrators networkservice /add
I have tried system restore to an earlier restore point and have uninstalled the updates, but the problems still persist. Any ideas as to what to do would be much appreciated(short of reseting to factory state). Help will be much appreciated!

On Sept 9th MS released the Sept updates. Three of these updates were faulty in that they were stuck in an installation loop which meant that even after installing they kept asking to be installed again.

The updates affected were KB2760411; KB2760588 and KB2760583. I have recently checked the MS updates and see that the issue date for these three updates is still at 9th Sept, which implies that MS has not fixed the problem. The most recent comment that I can find from MS is the following: -

“We’ve received reports of some customers experiencing issues when deploying some of September’s Office-related updates. We are investigating this issue and will act accordingly, to help ensure that our customers are protected,” Dustin Childs of Microsoft said in a statement on the matter.Click to expand...

Does anyone know if or when MS intend to fix the problem?

This is actually a friend of mines computer and he asked if I could help with his computer issues so after Bleeping Computer successfully fixed my computer problems here I am. This is a HP notebook with Windows Vista that has gotten very slow and is now starting to freeze on a daily basis. After the computer is turned on and the desktop appears, an icon with a popup comes on the toolbar stating that there are blocked startup programs. Now after asking him if he ever blocked anything he said that he had a virus in the past and tried to fix it himself by blocking a bunch of programs. So this could be something that needs to be looked into. Also another popup from the toolbar comes up stating that there are Windows updates that need to be installed. After trying to install these updates and error reports comes up stating that none uf them were able to be installed. Other than that the computer seems to be fine....just getting slower by the day. I already downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and performed a scan just to see if anything came up but nothing did. I am almost sure he doesn't have any viruses hopefully just an issue with his updates and startup programs. I hope I've given enough information for someone to help. Thanks in advance.
