Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

Q: Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

My modem-router is in bridged mode (everything is disabled except internet), i have disabled windows firewall i have taken my firewall offline (until this issue is resolved) but still no one can access my server (they can't even join a game if i create a server)

if i go to port checker it says connection refused on all ports except port 80? how do i force open the ports?

i called my ISP and they say they should be open and there not blocking any ports.

I have a static ip address, 24Mbit up 2.5Mbit down.

when i run my filesharing program (for sharing files between my and my clients) and they try to download a file from me it says it will take (99years, 99days, 99 hours) now i don't really have that long to wait

edit: and yes my network properties are configured manually (and not on auto detect) i have no problem accessing the internet myself

Preferred Solution: Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Opening ports, i have the firewall disabled but ports are still blocked

It would be better to open the ports in the running firewall than to turn it off. Firewalls load drivers, running or not. Many firewalls block everything by default when they are turned off so that the machine is protected during boot.

You may need to uninstall some firewalls to get them to open all ports.

Hey all, I'm running Windows XP Pro with Zone Alarms free Firewall program. I think that it has disabled my usb ports. I have disabled my usb ports manually, and then re-enabled them, however this didn't work. I know that the usb ports work because I can boot from a usb drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

zonelabs will not run along side other firewalls happly
your lucky it runs at all.
The Well Known Ports are those from 0 through 1023.

The Registered Ports are those from 1024 through 49151

The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 65535
if zonealarm fails you disable it in startup
switch back to xp
if xp firewall does not run you have diff other problems like a trojun and or spyware already on machine

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility (NAT port forwarding), but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed. I added exceptions to my firewall (even though it is off), and windows defender is off, and Avast's shields are all off. I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows 8 (not pro).

Anybody have any ideas? It seems like Windows 8 is blocking these ports from opening for some reason. There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them, either.

In case you're wondering why I need the ports open, I'm trying to resolve a "request timeout" error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses (I just want to play Terraria, man).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

I'm not sure if this is where it should go, but anyways...I'm using a D-Link router (DI-624) and I'm having issues with the W3 ports. I did all the portforwarding, however my ports seem to be on stealth. I also use Comodo firewall, and disabled it to see if things would be better, but the ports closed when I did. Anyone know how to open the ports?

Thanks in advance!

I was hosting a server fine off my computer until one day a virus took my computer for a spin to hell. After removing it my ports all seem to be closed. I used a port scanner and it keeps saying 25565 is closed, as well as other ports, but I need 25565 the most right now.

Things my tech did:
Tested if it was my IP by using a router and forwarding the ports on it. - Failed
Changed profiles on computer and hosted - Failed
Uninstalled and shut down all firewalls - Failed
Uninstalled all hamachi and tunngle services - Failed
Disabled any known ideas that he knew that would close the ports - Failed

However we ran the server with the same connection on a laptop and it worked just fine. So it is something to do with my system. This laptop ran the same anti-virus software as well when hosted.

I've ran MS Essentials, Avast, Kerpenski or w/e it's called, Combofix, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and some other things that my brother ran but he uninstalled them later.

Completely stumped on this one.

Didn't really see a specific place to post this so I thought I'd start here. I'm trying to get some software to work and oviously it's not. The tech support for this company (X10) is telling me that I need to open ports 8080 and 8888. I've been looking every where I can for instructions on how to do this. Don't want to pay the Geek Squad if it's something that I can do. So I'm asking does anyone know where I can get specific detailed instructions on how to open ports 8080 & 8888? Also is there some kind of way I can test these ports once they are open. Thanks in advance for any and all help .

A:Opening firewall ports 8080 & 8888

you should try contacting your internet service provider and informing them that you have had advice from a software company telling you to open certain ports. your ISP can access all information about your line settings once you have given them your account details.

they will tell you if the port is or is not active and will guide you through process of opening it (most will only help if you still use the router supplied by them when you signed up with that company.)

Make sure you get the correct TCP OR UDP ports from the software company, it might cause problems if the wrong ones are opened

I've got a computer with Win XP Pro SP3 on it. It was previously at a company that had T1 internet access, so the IP was entered manually. Now it's on a cable modem so it gets the IP automatically.

The internet is only accessible through IE. Mozilla gets blocked as does Chrome. In Mozilla, I can tell it not to use a proxy, but it still gets blocked. In Chrome, it goes to the IE settings box and still does not work.

Even in IE, downloads seem to be blocked. And even if you try to open a tab, instead of a blank page, you get a 403 error. When I downloaded the Google Chrome installer (which I had to do in safe mode) and tried to install it in normal mode, I got an "internet connection error". When I tried to do it for LogMeIn, it wouldn't even download. Even in safe mode, after it finally downloaded, it wouldn't activate.

However, in safe mode, everything else works fine.

I've removed old software, ran MBAM, disabled the firewall, ran AV scans all to no avail. I went through the Group Policy editor and still no internet (FF, GC) and no downloading (IE).

I have reasoned that the problem is that some ports are blocked. Since it was previously in an environment where it was being managed by an administrator, I have no clue as to how to unblock these ports. I don't think a repair install of XP will get the job done. I think I'll have to tell the person who I am helping that they need to either call their old network administrator and get the ports unblocked ... Read more

Does anyone know of a feature in either the new SP2 security features of Windows XP or perhaps in Norton Internet Security that might be blocking a port or something that is preventing me from sending data over the internet?

I can no longer publish with Frontpage to either of two webhosts (with Frontpage extensions installed and working when they tested it). I log-in successfully, but receive an error after it attempts to publish. I can no longer FTP a file to the webhosts. I log-in successfully, view the files on both sites, but get a failure when I try to upload a file. I can no longer even use their file manager tools at their sites to either upload a single file, or edit the HTML manually with their form. I'm having a situation where some computers on a network don't accept any incoming connections and some do. All of the computers load from the same Windows 7 image on the network, so all OS settings are the same. All of the computers are on the same subnetwork as well.

What could be the reason for that? My problem on the ground is that I don't control the network, so I cannot investigate too much myself and the computing support is like computing support usually is - "very busy" - so if I don't tell them what to do for me specifically nothing will happen.

Please let me know your suggestions what could be going on. The only thing that comes to my mind is the network blocks incoming connections according to a MAC address.

Hi, I'm having a problem port forwarding.

It seems as though there could be some type of residual program blocking all my computer's ports. I've uninstalled all forms of AntiVirus that I could make out but I still don't have access to any ports.

I've also bypassed the router completely and still all my ports are closed. You would think this would be good for security but I need to get a couple of ports open for games and such.

I can post an AutoRuns if anyone can explain how to. I can also post a Hijackthis if needed.

Thanks for your time.

I'm experiencing some difficulties with a game I'm currently playing (Ragnarok Online), when I run the game at home I have no problems connecting to the servers, but when I try to connect from my University I cannot (connect). Few days ago I noticed my Splashtop Streamer was not binding to its port so I tried changing it and that did not work so I just said what the hell and ignored it and was going to reinstall it in the future but since then I was messing around with Minecraft and tried Open to LAN while playing some Singleplayer and was unable to host even the same happened with the Dedicated Server for Minecraft it could not bind port!

Got XAMPP installed also and Apache and MYSQL no longer working so I've come to the conclusion I just can't host anything...

I've gone into Safe Mode with Networking and its the same problem! When I did a Google Search most say check your Firewall which I've done then its down to the Router or the Modem and its not those either! There are other computers on the Network and they will host anything it is something that has happened to my Computer the last few days and I can't work it out.

Last I recall it all working was just before I uninstalled AVG 2012 and installed the 2013 version but in Safe Mode AVG is disabled I've checked all processes and its not running so I can't imagine its that and I could not find anything on the AVG forums.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I've been trying to play FFXI ever since I moved into my Halls of Residence at University and I can't, I do believe it's a case of them blocking ports, what else? They obviosuly want to restrict access to programs that will slow the connection.

World of Warcraft i've been told runs fine and I own Guild Wars, that runs fine as well so obviously i'm a bit confused, all 3 are similar games, all MMO's but FFXI is the only one that has it's ports blocked? It makes no sense to me.

I've e-mailed the University in what will probably turn out to be a frivilous (spelling?) attempt at requesting they unblock the necessary ports...which I included in the e-mail.

I'm ultimately left with 3 options...

1) They do unblock the necessary ports and i'm happy
2) Is there any way around it? (you guys will know more than me )
3) I live with it for the year and get my own place next year...

Obviously ranked in order of how i'd like it to turn out.

Thanks for any help given.

On CableOne's web site they state:
"Cable ONE blocks ports 135, 136, 137, 138, 139 & 448. In addition, SMTP Port 25 is restricted for residential customers."

Would this have any effect on speed?

Downloads are significantly faster but browsing is very slow. If this continues, I'll go back to the slower 12 Mbps to get faster.

I don't think that blocking these ports should impact your browsing speed on any way.

A:Ports Blocked [Possibly?]

I highly doubt that "every" port is listening on your local computer. For example, if you wanted to run a web server you would install something like IIS or Apache and it would set itself up to listen on port 80 (http) and 443 (https). Without Apache or IIS running, there would not be a listening port on your local computer to connect to.

What are you trying to port forward to? Which services do you want to run on your local computer that you connect to from the Internet?

When I format my pc it works and after some updates it blocks the port again. I tried to add the rule on the windows firewall to allow the port but no luck.

Also alot of flash, windows updates and bbc iplayer doesnt work.

Sorry, title should have been SP2 Disabled USB Ports //Post Title Edited

Good morning folks,

I have a spare computer that I recently received from a friend who works IT for a hotel chain. I am installed Windows XP on it. The computer worked fine. I then installed Service Pack 2 and now all of the USB ports are disabled.

Here is the fun stuff:
1. The keyboard and mouse must be hooked up through the USB ports. There are no individual ports for the keyboard and mouse; USB connection only.
2. There is no CD drive.
3. The BIOS is locked and I have no clue as to what the Admin password is.
4. The other bootup options of Windows 2000 and NT station will not boot - this is the reason I installed Windows XP.

Since it was a fresh install on the hard drive, I was going to move it to another computer (co-worker's) and do a re-install from there via bootup through CD. But, his computer has a password on the BIOS (which he does not know) and the computer is set to boot from hard drive and then CD if nothing is found on hard drive.

Any suggestions besides pulling out what little hair I have left?

Thanks for any help.

Edit: Thanks for the title edit KoanYorel; greatly appreciated.

A:SP2 Disabled USB Ports

Have you gone through the entire SP2 installation process and rebooted since?
I had a client running the original XP build and when I upgraded him to SP2 the USB ports started acting screwy, reporting that they would only function at a 1.1 speed, but after a couple of reboots they came back fine.

My PC running windows 7 seems to have all the USB ports disabled. I was using it and my computer woudlnt reconize that my iphone was plugged in so i restarted. After the restart nothing that is USB works, which is a huge pain because both my mouse and keyboard are USB. How would I go about dealing with this? Do I have to reinstall windows? Or is there some other way to enable the USB ports via bios or other. Ive already tried switching ports and that wont work. I also tried booting in safemode and that didnt work either. I know its windows because up to windows my keyboard which is illuminated will light up and my mouse laser will come on until it gets to the "Starting Windows" screen.

Iím not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here is the question.

Iím wondering, if you have a client and server on the same machine (for testing purposes) communicating via tcp/ip using or the LAN ip address of the machine, is it possible to block a port so that they canít communicate?

Iím asking this because Iím having having difficulties that suggest a port is blocked.

The machine runs WinXP, and is on a wireless network.

Thanks for any feedback.

A:If Client and Server are on Same computer, can ports be blocked?

It is entirely possible to do so. Perhaps disabling the Windows Firewall or examining the pfirewall.log logfile could help you figure out why your port is blocked.

The last couple of weeks I had encountered a problem where only my computer on the whole network, was not able to access the internet using email clients or web browsers. What made the issue strange is that a few times in the day it would work but only for a couple of seconds or maybe just enough for one page to load and that was it. To further confuse the issue, I was able to ping ips and domains using the command prompt just fine.Turns out I had a virus/trojan of some kind. csrsc.exe (kaspersky found and removed the problem). After it was removed my internet access seemed to go back to normal. (I also removed the exception it had created in windows firewall)Unfortunately I still have a problem and I'm not sure if it is a configuration issue on my end or some trailing spyware. My Current symptom is that I cannot connect to any server using FTP. One server that I admin shows in the log "425 Can't open data connection." (typically a port problem), and another server I do not admin says "500 Illegal PORT command"Other servers just look like they get stuck connecting and it will never show any of the files on the server. Our network is behind a pfsense firewall but it only blocks incoming traffic. Our computers each have their own specific exceptions for windows firewall.I have checked my exceptions and I do not see anything that I do not recognize. Also, I have used other computers on my network and they can successfully connect to all of the ftp servers I ha... Read more

New guy here, not entirely sure where to post this so I'll start here and follow directions.I use uTorrent to download bit torrents. I've used the program for well over a year and have had no issues until this past Tuesday. I am now unable to download or host files. The error in uTorrent is "Listen error, you should change the listen port"I can go into the preferences and change the port randomly. I've done it at least 20 times and it's selects from the low thousands all the way up to the 50k's ports randomly and none are working. If I click on a torrent in the details it says "An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by it's access permissions"I've shut down rebooted my computer and modem, I'm not running a router and I WAS using McAffee with windows firewall but I've uninstalld McAffee and will install either AVG's free software or Nod32. I've uninstalled uTorrent and reinstalled it with both their new beta and regular programs with no luck.I went to canyouseeme.org to test a few ports and it was unable to access any ports.I went to another site that scans your ports on the advice from another site and it said all but 2 of my ports from 1-2400 were in stealth mode and inaccessible with the other 2 being secure (probably for my ISP access) I then randomly scanned higher end ports and the site was unable to access those ports either, which lead me to believe my ports are being blocked by somethin... I use the mobile hotspot while on the road without any real problems (email, web etc.) UNTIL I try to connect with contacts via VPN or with programs that use odd, non-standard or random ports to connect. I used a port checker which reports the ports are blocked. When I checked with Verizon support I was told that they do not block any ports. When I change to another service and device, the problem is gone. The mobile hotspot does not allow for any change of settings. What am I missing? Thanks.

A friend asked which ports were being used by a game we play, so that he could open them through port forwarding in his Belkin N600 router.

The ports are:

TCP port 443 - (local 55282)
TCP Port 5222 - (local 55286)
UDP Port 31928 - (local 51475)
UDP Port 39033 (local 62716)
UDP 39036 (Local 54837)

After opening these ports he found that he could browse all other websites, EXCEPT Facebook.

Does anyone have an explanation for this as I cannot understand how OPENING ports could block anything?????

OK, first, Verizon swears they're not blocking ANY of my ports.
I was running a server on port 80 (among other ports for e-mail and FTP as well), for years on Verizon Fios with the old red and black Motorolla Router. Then I upgraded to the Verizon Fios Quantum, and all the ports are blocked.
- I've done all the port forwarding I can.
- I've done multiple resets on the router
- I've asked Verizon for help (practically useless, but swear they're not blocking ports)
- I've turned off all firewalls and tried it too
- Ports 8081 and 8096 work for programs I'm running, but just about every other port is blocked.

I'll spare you details on the machines and the systems (W8 and WAMP) because the requests aren't making it through the router.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to determine what's blocking the ports? Or more importantly, how to unblock them?

A:Why are all my ports blocked (Verizon Fios Quantum)

Well if the ports are blocked at the new gateway there is nothing you can do because you do not have access to its configuration. You could probably run NetMon or WireShark to try and verify where the packets die. It could be a marketing ploy to convince users running services from their residential line to upgrade to a business account ($$$$) That would explain why the Verizon Tier 1 support are telling you no ports are being blocked because that is a default configuration for a residential line, in that no ports expected to be opened on a residential account are being blocked.

Here is my issue as I described it in my original thread:

On Wednesday of this week (10/10/07), everything was working 100% fine. I then did a standard reboot, because things started running kinda slow (comp had been on for quite a while). Then when I booted back up, it seemed as if certain programs/ports were blocked? (I know some computer knowledge/lingo, but this is above my head.) First and for most I noticed aim would not work. It won't even load. Strangely, AIM will boot up under processes, but will never actually show up on my desktop. I open it, then my mouse goes busy for a second, then nothing happens. This process repeats everytime I open it. Here is a quick screenshot of what I mean:

So moving along, I notice other things stopped working. I can also not use MSN. It tells me my username/password does not exist (it does, and is correct). Also, I can not check my gmail or hotmail accounts. If I try going to gmail.com or hotmail.com, it just instantly displays "Unable to connect. Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at login.live.com." Same thing with IE. When I say instantly, I mean it doesn't even TRY to load, right when I click sign-in, that pops up. Almost as if it is being blocked (like I said earlier). Strangely, other websites work 100% fine.

Also, I was curious to see how far this went. I tried downloading a simple torrent file, and it would not connect to it. I also can not connect to my PokerStars, or Full Tilt Poker appl... Read more

A:dss log file - programs/ports are being blocked, possible malware

After the scan and a reboot I can now connect to my poker accounts and my e-mail clients. I can also connect to MSN again. However the aim problem is still remains (most frustrating one imo!) Also, I am still having problems connecting to some things (for example, can not update Lavasoft Adaware, and could not connect through DSS to download HijackThis.)

For security reasons, I've blocked all but a handful of ports on "computer a". Now I'm unable to access this computer from others on my network.

Can someone tell me if there is a port I can open that will reestablish this ability. I've only blocked TCP/IP ports...I haven't touched UDP.
