Laptop screen was broken before Windows 10 download.

Q: Laptop screen was broken before Windows 10 download.

Our laptop screen no longer works (thanks to my son peeing on the computer!!!). We were connecting to our TV monitor via HDMI, but after my wife downloaded Windows 10, everytime we attempt to connect to the TV or any other monitor, we get a "no signal" message. I am computer illiterate, but I was hoping some knowledgeable people here would be able to assist.

Preferred Solution: Laptop screen was broken before Windows 10 download.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

IMO Windows is huge pain when dealing with more than 2 screens. At work I have 3 screens and occasionally when I take out my laptop from docking station, it messes up the settings. Takes 5-10 minutes get it back to my original.

But that is not my question. At home I have a cracked laptop screen that no longer works. I have connect this laptop to my tv and am trying to use it as a htpc. My issue is I have not been able to find settings that disable the laptop screen, and for windows to ONLY use my tv as primary screen. The reason I need to disable the laptop screen is that when I have my laptop open (I need this to use the keyboard/mouse of the laptop), the tv screen is OFF (windows is thinking I'm using the laptop screen that is dead). Essentially I'm in a situation in which if I want to use laptop/keyboard, the default setting is the laptop screen. Right now I have to get the laptop lid closed, but barely open it for me to use the touchpad/keyboard.

What I'm looking for...

-Registry setting or permanently way of disabling the laptop screen.
-Permanent setting that always defaults the tv monitor instead of the laptop screen.
-I'm only going to use XBMC (windows to boot directly), and would prefer not to have setup the settings every time I turn it on.
-If above is not possible, anyway of setting Windows to think the lid is always closed?

Thanks,
John

Hello guys,
I want to install either Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu on my laptop (Samsung R519) via USB however I cant because my laptop screen is broken.

When I turn on my laptop, my monitor doesn't display until it gets to the Windows 7 login screen. However I have forgotten the admin password meaning I cant nothing.

By chance is there a way to get to the boot up screen to boot from my USB?

If you have the boot menu enabled in the BIOS you can probably press the F-12 key to get the boot menu.

Hello, I am trying to do a fresh install of windows on my Samsung R510 Laptop.

The screen is completely broken and has been totally removed. I use an external monitor in order to use the laptop.

The LCD connector is no longer connected to the motherboard.

However, the external monitor does not become active/receive a signal until the laptop boots to the Windows Log On screen. I cannot get the external monitor to display the BIOS/boot settings and have tried everything I can think of and searched the internet long and hard for a solution.

I have disconnected the LCD completely from the motherboard, however the laptop still does not automatically send signal to the external monitor immediately. I have tried pressing FN+F4 at various points during the boot, and it has no effect.

Is there anyway to disable the original monitor completely so the boot and BIOS boots immediately sending signal to the external monitor?

Does anyone know where the laptop Lid Switch is located on the R510? I have read one post where it is suggested to put a magnet over the lid switch to trick the computer into thinking the lid is closed upon boot thus automatically sending signal to the external monitor.

I cannot install a fresh copy of Windows without being able to see the boot screen on the laptop and this is what I need to do.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Most, if not all laptops are designed to operate that way. However, try pressing [F2] at boot up to get it to the CMOS/BIOS Setup screen. Now press [Fn][F4] to attempt to toggle the output from the internal LCD to the external monitor.

Hello, and Welcome

See if this works. At boot tap the F2 key (page 79 of the user manual). This will cause the Computer to enter the BIOS screen. If you got it right, Windows will not boot up and you will not see the Windows start screen on the external monitor. Now press the Fn key + F4 at the same time. This key combination is supposed to change the output from the LCD to the external monitor which should let you see the BIOS screen on the external monitor. See page 50 of your user manual.

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

I used a Samsung NP300E5A-A02UB laptop for over a year through an external monitor, ever since the screen broke on it. Never had any problems with it besides that. Until one day I, not thinking about it, shut down my PC through holding down the power button, because it was being too slow, couldn't even shut it down normally. But little did I know, doing that would make sure I can't use it again, as far as I can tell. Because I shut it down using the power button, I'm assuming the screen came up, the one either to repair or tell me the pc shut down incorrectly, or bios, or whatever it is. But since my external monitor doesn't turn on until after my pc is signing in, it won't turn on. Normally it would just kick on automatically when signing in. So I'm completely blind to what I'm doing and can't get my monitor on. Literally all I need is a sneak peak at it to get it to turn on all the way, but I don't know how. I've tried a few things already, that I've found online, but never though to ask about it til now.

I've tried doing the little closing and then quickly opening up the laptop screen to fool the pc into turning it on.

I've tried manually unplugging my screen, in hopes it would use my external as a primary instead.

I've pressed the appropriate F key, or combination keys to turn it on.

Possibly other things, but I forget, it's been a little while.

All of these with no luck.

Literally all I may... Read more

If it was setup to allow Window's Remote Desktop or some similar third party remote access, you can use that. Otherwise, I think repairs or another laptop are called for.

We had finally gotten a computer (laptop) last week (which husband had to fix first ) to be able to do some work for someone. Just got it up & running 2days ago and while at a friend's, someone stood it up next to a chair, and it fell over & actually broke the screen (looks kinda like you swiped the screen with a few different colored paintbrushes)! Due to a wildfire in August, we are very short on money so we will probably have to try to find a screen on craigslist or something. My question is Is there ANY other models that are apt to have the same screen or that can be easily used? If so, which ones are apt to be compatible or, if you don't know, how can I find out???
HP 2000-239dx
Thank you very much for any/all help!

P. S. Hopefully this was the best subforum to put this in. If not, either let me know or feel free to move it for me. Thanks

A:Broken Laptop Screen

A Google search for 2000-239dx LCD will turn up a number of pages of companies selling the screens and also people selling them on e-Bay. You could choose to buy from one of those sources. Some of the found pages may list other HP models that use the same screen.

Well, I sure wouldn't do anything about buying a screen until you're sure that's the only issue. If it doesn't do anything, I'm guessing that more than the screen is gone. I aquired an Aspire 4720Z laptop that the screen had been stepped on. I removed the screen (smashed on mid right side), but before removing (and after), I connected it to 2 different monitors--nothing appeared on either-black, power LED just blinks on/off although the computer sounds like it's working, lights come on, hear the drive , etc. I tried Fn +F8 and all other suggestions I could find, nothing. The laptop screen shows zero, not faded, nothing.Vusually, the inverter looks OK, no signs of anything else. Any suggestions as what to check/how to check while i have the screen off, what's next? --failure with the other 2 monitors bothers me.

A:broken laptop screen advice

When you hit the Fn+F8, did you wait a few seconds, then hit the combination again?

Make sure there isn't a small pin poking through near the hinge area above the keyboard that may be stuck (from being stepped on). This pin activates a switch when the lid is closed. (Some systems use a different method.) If there is a pin, be sure it works freely, is not stuck.

If the system was closed when the LCD was stepped on, it could have suffered damage under the keyboard, the video section of the motherboard, perhaps.

Afternoon All,

My brother in law dropped his laptop, which has resulted in a cracked screen and damaged plastics. Having replaced a screen before I ordered a new one, and have fit it, but alas no joy.

Before I go and pull the laptop to pieces I thought it would be a good idea to ask for some advice. Here are a few key points;

1. The replacement screen is brand new, and has had all its wires connected. There is no display on the screen. There was no display on the old damaged on either, I though the fall had damaged it completely.

2. The rest of the laptop works fine, I have hooked it up to a screen via the VGA output, and everything works fine.

3. When I right click and select properties>settings , it only displays the external monitor, no mention of the LCD.

So what do you suggest? I was thinking about pulling it apart and seeing if the LCD cable was still attached at the "other end", any thoughts?

Thanks,

James

I have a problem regarding a broken laptop screen, nvidia drivers that failed to install and a system that now doesn't output via it's own hdmi port. Yikes.

The screen was cracked some time ago, but hey, modern Laptops (the model in question is a Gigabyte Q1732) all have hdmi out, so I procured a good screen and continued to use the Laptop.

However, during a recent system and disk cleanup one of the tasks I had set myself was correcting an issue with my graphics driver that was using the default on-board as opposed to the nvidia GT540m that it was equipt with. I took the opportunity to uninstall the intel driver and the subsequently install the nvidia driver before restarting, as the switch over did not work on my previous attempts. That was probably my biggest mistake.

The nvidia installation failed, prompting restart into safe mode.

The hdmi port no longer outputs and so, with the broken screen, I can't see what I am doing to try and fix anything.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Could I set up remote desktop? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't want to buy a whole new screen or whatever that part is that the red and black wires are attached to... just to connect these wires.
Do you have any suggestions? The ends of the red/black wires look like they have solder on the ends - see the picture. If I knew the name of the little white connection part, maybe I could buy a replacement part and try to make due.

Ok, so I received an older laptop from someone, a Gateway NE56R43u. So the screen is broken....a big crack in it, can't see anything. So when Windows comes up, I can see everything...through the external monitor that is. I went to upgrade it to Windows 10 and everything seemed fine, but it's either stuck on something or it's a part where it's not in Windows yet and needs some sort of manual input, but I can't see anything. The external monitor isn't showing anything. The monitor I'm using is an old Lite-On LCD. I'm using a VGA input. Again, works in Windows, but it's stuck and I can't see anything. Any ideas on how to get it back to where I can see it again? Thanks.

Looked up fixes and found one that said to uninstall the drivers. I uninstalled my AMD and Intel display drivers.

Now the monitor won't display anything

Is there a way to fix this? I'm now basically working blind.

hi, i have jut installed windows 7 ultimate n 32bit, the problem i have is that i cant get my laptop to display on an external monitor - i need to do this as the screen on my laptop is damaged beyond repair - the startup process does, but after i get 'no signal'

now, when i re-installed xp a week ago, i had the same problem but managed to solve it by pressing F8 and choosing enable vga mode before xp loaded.
i tried to do the same with wndows 7 by choosing the low resolution option, however this doesnt work, i get the initial 'windows is starting' screen then 'no signal'

ive also tried pressing Fn + F5 once windows has loaded.

the laptop is an acer travelmate 4233, any help will be appreciated

Kinda begs the question on why you would want to upgrade a broken laptop...does the screen stay black? Does the welcome music play? Asking because Windows might be hanging up during boot....

The hinges on my cousin's HP Pavilion ZV 6000 laptop have been broken and cracked for awhile. (One is broken, the other is cracked.) A few minutes ago he powered on the laptop only to find that the screen is completely black.

We're figuring that there must be a connection between the damaged hinges and the black screen.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has an idea as to exactly what the problem is and how to go about fixing it.

Thank you.

A user brought a laptop with a broken screen.  I had it running to a second external monitor and it worked fine, but I wanted to do a factory reset on the laptop (HP Pavilion, Windows 8).  In an attempt to force Windows to boot to the second monitor,
I disabled the default video driver (some last ditch internet advice).  Now it won't boot to the second monitor at all, and none of the normal Windows methods work (Windows Key + , Alt-F4 hotkey, etc.)  I think it's because Windows' multi-monitor
support depends on that video driver.  I need to re-enable that video card, but I have to do it blind.  I've tried recording and counting my steps but I haven't had any luck.
Would it be possible to remove the hard drive from the laptop and edit specific Windows configuration files to re-enable that video adapter, then put the hard drive back in the laptop and boot it up?  Does anyone know what config files these would be?

Hi,

Please can someone help me.

A friend of mine has sent me a photo of his laptop (as attached). Does anyone know if this is the screen that is broken or could it be something else maybe, like the Graphics Card.

The only information that he has been able to give me is, that his daughter was using Google and then this happened.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Misfit

I hooked up my broken screen toshiba XP laptop to a external monitor with a VGA. I removed the laptop screen driver, and installed the new monitors drivers and was able to change the resloution to reasonable size. It worked great, for a day. Now the screen only shows the windows start up logo and then turns black. I know the computer is still running because i can still log into my accont when I guess the right buttons. HOW CAN I MAKE THIS WORK? thanks much.
