Windows Explorer shows image attribute columns...

Q: Windows Explorer shows image attribute columns...

At times, Windows decides I should have image attribute columns in certain folders (size, date taken, etc). I can turn them off by going to a folder without them and clicking on the button that applies settings to all folders. But is there a way to stop them from coming back?

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer shows image attribute columns...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is it possible to make the columns I choose to view stay put in Windows 7 Windows Explorer? I've tried turning the library view off. I still get a narrow view in the right pane showing the libraries and a huge preview pane. I want to expand the first column to show my selections, e.g. file type, date, etc., then stay put. I drag the little line out each time expanding my file view/details pane, but each time it pops back to the narrow library view. Thanks in advance.

In Windows Explorer under XP, all file types had the same basic set of columns... File name/date modified/file type/size. This is mostly true with Windows 7, but I notice that with certain file types such as mp3s, wavs and jpegs, Microsoft have tried to be clever and choose columns more appropriate to the file type. So mp3s now default to name/#/title/contributing artist/album.

My question is: are these defaults user accessible?

I'm a photographer and I have about 100 folders containing jpegs. I'd like to change the columns currently shown, but I don't want to have to change 100 folders individually.....

Thanks.

Hi Astronautilus and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes you can do this. Below is ashort tutorial on how to change it for the documents folder template. You can do the same for any other folder type.

The folder before change.

With a new column added

Folder header Context menu Modification
I want to know how to modify and add to the default column details context menu in vista.
Open a folder.
Right click on the column headers and you get a context menu.
This menu contains: 'type, size, authors, tags and date modified.

1. What is the correct name of this context menu ?
2. Where do I find it in the registry ?
3. How do I modify it to include "Date Created" ?

I know all about how to set default columns. That is NOT what I want to do.

In Windows Explorer in Windows 7 I like to use the Details view. I have set of columns/headings that I prefer to use. The problem is I would like to set these columns up and have them be the default for every folder I open. As it is now every folder I open I have to customize the columns again. They stay for that folder but every new folder requires me to customize. Is there a default option so that I can set what I want and have it apply to every folder?

I just installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Prior to this I had XP on the machine that 7 is now on. I did not use Explorer in XP I used a different file manager. I did this mainly for the split view. Now that 7 as the snap feature getting two panes is easy with Explorer so I am going to give it a try for a while. Thanks.

A:Windows Explorer Set Defaults For Columns?

Hello Anomaly, and welcome to Seven Forums.

After you have the folder views and columns set how you like them for that folder, you could do either one of the tutorials below to set it for other folders.

For all folders:
Folder View - Set a Default for All Folders

For all folders only with the same folder template as the original

Folder View - Apply to Folders

This happened for many years until a few days ago:
In Windows Explorer (in Windows 7), when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen: Name, Date modified, Size, Type; and the scroll bar is on the far right side of the screen. All is good.

Now when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, the same four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen, but the scroll bar on the right side of the screen has shifted far to the left so that only some of the characters of the Name field are displayed; the rest of the name and the other three columns are hidden. I can move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen (where it used to be), but the next time I open Windows Explorer, the scroll bar has shifted to the left side of the screen again, covering up columns' displays, so I have to manually move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen again.

How do I get the scroll bar to stay on the far right side of the screen like it used to?
And why did it change? Did I do something inadvertently?

Hello all, I hope you had a great xmas/family time

I had been having plenty of "not responding" apps and windows, so I did some registry clean thing online.

Im not sure that caused the second problem, but its really weird and Ive never seen it before, in "details view", there is only an icon for each file/folder, but no name, no columns of any kind, just blank. If I RH mouse click where the column name would be, I see a blank where there would be a list of columns to add or remove. Then when I choose "More..." there is NOTHING in the list of potential other columns!

The weirdest part, this only happens sometimes / to certain folders, I am not sure which and I will keep a diary now... but I would love to sort it out but dont know where to start.

Thanks guys,
Mark.

I added "length" from the menu, but on returning later it was gone and what appears to be the default setting was back. I had also removed a column at the same time, but it returned when I revisited. The question? I need to know where to change the default settings for the columns and how to ensure that changes I make from the menu remain saved. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit as my OS if that helps. I'm new to the Forum so I hope I have submitted this correctly.

In Windows Explorer, Detail View, is there a way to remove/disable the additional columns? (ie: Track, Artist, length, etc) I'm a simple person, and only want the main columns displayed, (Size, Type, Date) and Windows 7 seems to ignore me when i change the views. Even the "Reset All", and "Apply to All" seem to be ignored after a day later.

In XP your could remove them from RegEdit under HKCR\SystemFileAssociations and deleting the "Audio", "Video", and "Images" keys, and Explorer would 'forget' how to handle them, and details view would remain the same, but Win7 doesn't seem to respond to this either.

ANYONE that recognizes these symptons please help me IDENTIFY this issue!

I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port, Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then says success. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive. After this I started to see the following occurring:

1) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names. If I click on the file to rename, the name is there, but when I close that, the name disappears.
2) All the normal column names in Explorer details view are gone, "Author" is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Size, Date Created/Accessed/Modified etc...
3) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center", System, regedit.exe.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing. I found out later, No searches work.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.
I've done a complete Virus scanning ticket with Broni:
http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/unknown-rootkit-infection-explorer-modified.208251/
I've tried running SFC many times, SFC says errors fixed, but the CBS.log is repeating the same errors every time.
Any assistance on identifying this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings forums' readers & helpers, ٩̢ ̗(Ӧ̮Ӧ)̢ ̗۶

The search feature in the Explorer of Windows 8 is not as strait forward, simple and reliable as the previous versions (even if the search in the sub-folders is selected, it doesn't always find something that are in them.)

So, I need a way to list in the Explorer all the files whose Attributes are set to ?A?.

This is to find in one command which files (and in which sub-directory) I did not backup yet, instead of looking for them in every folder after changing the view to ?Details?. You see, my backup process is in three steps:

① Once the chosen folder in the Explorer is in the ?Details? view, I click on the ?Attribute? tab, which brings all the ?A? on top.

② I select and drag them to an external drive.

③ Then, I change the attribute property of those selected files, i.e., from ?A? to ?N?.

٩̢ ̗(̾̈́͡◑̾̈́̈́͜ ̾̈́̈́͡◑̾̈́)̢ ̗۶It would be much quicker to select-drag them directly from the results and then, to change their attributes without having to go to their respective folders.

Either command line or a file manager that can collect files by the archive attribute would be easier as that's what it was there for. There are many free file managers. Or you could do RoboCopy or RichCopy to recursively gather all files with archive bit set throughout a folder tree.

Hi man. First of all, how about update and complete system specs at your profile. In some cases, such info will be "V.I.Info" - "very important info". Take some time to do it. You may use this one in case of doubts "getting closer": Speccy - Download
Go to: Windows start search bar and type "cleanmgr" - without quotes. When it prompts, select ssd, press OK. Let it verify - it may take some time. Check the boxes but do it slowly, be aware, right?! When you feel "satisfied", press OK and see what happens. You'd download and install this one too CCleaner - Slim
But let box checked at default install.

Let us know the results.

I've seen a lot of threads about Libraries, but can't find one that addresses (in a way I can understand) my problem. I can navigate to a given folder, say "My Pictures" either through my user name or through "Documents/My Pictures" The two methods show different content for the folder. This is driving me batty, as I have to go back and forth to find particular files. I have even tried downloading replacement software for Windows Explorer, and still have this problem. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but the way my brain works, a file should be in one place (which I understand it is) and found in one way. Can these multiple routes be eliminated?

Hello SevenForums,

Ever since running some registery cleaner I have been having issues with my windows explorer.
I never should have touched my registery with untrusted software in the first place..

I know most of you will probably suggest me to reinstall but I would prefer to just put the registry entries back in place as I have a lot installed on my computer.

bruceb3 ... WinDirStat will show what you are looking for.  Download here, from bleepingcomputer.com.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windirstat/

BleepingComputer Review:
WinDirStat scans one or more hard drives and produces a detailed map or the disk making space hogs immediately apparent.
It does this by drawing a rectangle for each file, the relative sizes being decided by the relative sizes of the files. So, a very big file will be a very big box and a small file would be a small box.

After deleting some files from my NAS (WD My Cloud), it quit showing in explorer. Shows on other pc, but not this one (7 x86 Pro). It shows as storage device, and media server, but no longer as a system device (access to the files on it). Tried a variety of fixes .... system restore, reboot router and nas, checked workgroup name, file sharing options, win network diagnostic tool ...

Seems obvious that it has something to do with deleting the files, yet I can't think of any reason it should. Windows still recognizes it as a system device, just won't display it as such in explorer on this one pc.

A:NAS shows in network map, but no longer in windows explorer

After more checking, the NAS shows as a system device in Device Manager, in properties on Devices and Printers page, as well as in the Network Map. So Windows can obviously see it, knows it's there, but won't show it as a system device in Windows Explorer.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a notebook. One 500GB drive partitioned to an OS drive and a data drive.
I run AVAST (paid version), Malware Bytes and unhackme and no viruses/trojans/rootkits discovered - I'm a stickler for security.

I noticed in Windows Exploring that both drives were getting low on available storage (both <8GB). I copied 30GB from the data drive and 10GB from the OS drive to an external drive and deleted the files from the notebook, using shift key/delete. I cleared the Recycle Bin; ran Disk error check (Scandisk) and defragged both drives.

Folder Size & Treesize Pro both tell me I have 180GB & 100Gb respectively free; versus Windows Explorer 5Gb & 6GB.
My available storage only increased by 800MB and 600MB respectively after deleting the files, so for a file removal of 40Gig I get back 1.4gig of HD space.
I've checked pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys [8GB between them] and they haven't altered recently.
Ran CCleaner's Registry cleaner - no difference.

I rang the OS support for my Notebook Manufacturer and spent 1/2 a day trying different things including HD tune. They couldn't figure it out but suggested Utorrent may be grabbing HDD space so I uninstalled it.... no difference.
I've exhausted Google fixes!
Any ideas on how to fix this as I cannot load new software now - says there is not enough room.
cheers

I may have done something to cause this but here is what is happening.

I download a file to any folder and when I move or delete it the file is still showing in the original folder?

After awhile I go back and it is gone? This never happened before I installed a SSD drive as my main hard drive.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank You

My Desktop looks like Explorer with details such as Name, Size, Item Type and Date Modified, split into columns and am unable to remove this.

I have never seen this before on any screen before with any versions of windows.

If anyone knows how this occurred and how to remove I would be grateful as this is absolute crap on my desktop.

Thanks in advance all
Johnno

What add-on's are you running for extra software. Could it be related to those Gidgets you have on the desktop?

Hi all,

I find it irritating to have to set the column width (name, date etc.) wider for every folder I open.
I am always using the Explorer full screen.
Can this be achieved globally?

Thanks

Can we modify or add a custom columns on Explorer?

i just installed dBpoweramp and i can see a complete metadata info about the audio files via popup info & Audio Properties tab (created by dBpoweramp), i consider some of them are advanced info like encoder settings, accuraterip results, CD catalog, etc. can we add a custom columns on Explorer for these info?

and tried to add an extra columns like 'compression ratio', 'encoded by' & 'bit depth' on Explorer but it shows nothing. I can see via dBpoweramp for some audio files, but not on Explorer, it just blank. can i fix this?
Thanks in advance

Apa kabar clifflip! When I had a WinXP I used Auirionix to do that, however, I am not sure whether program is still updated/exists.

Under Win7 just right-click on the Name pane (when in Details view) and click More you can then select from 200+ fields of information to be shown:

Usually, I can see Asian characters (specifically Chinese and Japanese) perfectly fine, but since the last time I restarted my computer none of them are showing up. They don't show in foobar2000 (a music player) either, unless I switch the font to Meiryo (a Chinese font). They used to show up with no problem.

They still show up in Chrome.

This has happened to me several times in recent months and I'm at a loss as to why...

Today's example: I was looking for "Spybot - Search & Destroy" (SSD) on my desktop in order to run it. My desktop is pretty busy, and after searching quickly through all the icons a couple of times, I decided just to search the drive; I figured it would probably be quicker (and I wouldn't get crossed eyes to boot :-) I searched and the first time I searched, Explorer returned that 2 files had been found - but there were no files listed! I reran the search again without changing any parameters, and this time the Explorer search engine found 2 SDD support files (their extension is 'SBI'). I went back to the desktop and this time located the icon to launch SDD (unsure if it had been there all along - probably). I checked the properties and sure enough, it said the executable was where it has always been - in my D drive, which is my boot drive. I have attached two screen shots as a typical example of what's been going on; I didn't take a screen shot of the very first search that showed 2 files but nothing listed, and I couldn't duplicate it. Since this isn't the first time this has happened, it worries me that something so basic to a PC should be repeating itself on what appears to be becoming a fairly regular basis. Does anybody have any insight as to what the root cause may be? My rig is fairly new; I built it myself; I've noticed no other problems at all.... ??????... Read more

A:File Appears on Desktop but Windows Explorer Search Shows Nothing

Hi Geordie

I don't see anything wrong with the results in the screenshots you posted. The executables are where they are supposed to be, and listed as such - - in a folder called "Downloads".

Actually, I'm wondering why SpyBot is in there, rather than in Program Files\SpyBot-Search & Destroy?

The only thing a Search would find on your Desktop is the shortcut, since the files are in the \Download folder.

I'm guessing that perhaps you were starting Search from a different location (leftover, perhaps, from a recent previous search). And the results were surprising since you'd searched a different location by accident.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hi,

I've got the following problem: when i boot up with no disk in my liteon dvd drive , and insert a disk when windows has fully booted up, the windows explorer (and any other programs) wont show any content of the inserted disk. Doesnt matter wether its a CDrom or a DVD. When i boot up with a disk already inserted, windows explorer does show the content , and i can swich disks and windows will show the content for all of those disks. I dont know exactly when this started to happen, but i do know it once worked fine.

Since the "worked fine" i installed the following :
- nero 6 ultra
- daemon tools 3.46
- alcohol 1.20
- inserted a USB 2.0 pen drive
- installed several (original) games
- did not install any new hardware (except the usb pendrive).

To try to resolve this problem, i uninstalled / reinstalled / removed the first 3. Also i tried a registry fix : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060 .
I run the windows setup, and chose the "update" option, hoping it would fix any wrong drivers.
I've been playing with safe boot, msconfig. With that i found out that when i do an almost normal boot , with just the plug n play service disabled, the content pane will show content (after a boot with no disk in it). The problem then is that it takes about 20 secs for windows explorer to iterate thru all of my drives. (basicly , it hangs for about 20 secs, each time i startup windows explorer). This is of course unacceptable, and ... Read more
