Why Does Kerio (free Version) Still Warn Me . . .

Q: Why Does Kerio (free Version) Still Warn Me . . .

I really do like this site; I think it's the font of most computer knowledge in the universe.

I'm pretty sure my malware is all gone; Mickiemoes has been helping me in the HJT forum. My logs are clean, I set a restore point, and so far, I like the Antivir he suggested for a virus checker. He also helped me get rid of Norton, which didn't want to go away. So, now I'm trying out other free firewalls recommended by BC, one at a time. I'm using Kerio's version now and it seems OK. But . . .

My problem: I have Kerio set to prompt me about everything, just because I'm curious. Often, when I'm away from the computer, I'll "disable all traffic" or sometimes just log off. When I get back, I still find a lot of things that wanted internet access - much of it apparently from Microsoft. Just now, I got "direct 3D Flying Objects Screen Saver", supposedly launched by Windows NT Logon Application wanting to call out. But, I don't even *use* a screen saver. I denied everything manually, but don't want to create rules until I actually know what I'm doing.

Norton never used to alert me to things like this - in fact I had no idea Microsoft wanted to "phone home" as often as it apparently does. Is this a flaw with Kerio, or did Norton just let Microsoft bypass their firewall when it wanted to? If so, is this usually benign? If not, is there a tutorial somewhere to help me decide what to permanently try to block and what to allow? Was there one here that I missed?

Thanks again.

Preferred Solution: Why Does Kerio (free Version) Still Warn Me . . .

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You may be seeing attempts by one programme to access another internally.

I installed KERIO Personal Firewall (Free version) yesterday on my pc and I seem to have the following problem:

Everytime I click on START, CONTROL PANEL I can't seem to accces the control panel for at least a minute. The Task bar also stops responding for a minute or so. But after that everything works fine. (No viruses or spyware found on system)
I uninstalled Kerio and the problems goes away.
Do you recommend another firewall or is there a solution to my problem.
Thanks for the reply.

A:Problems with KERIO Personal Firewall (Free version)

I use kerio exclusively with no problem. Have you turned off Microsoft's firewall? Two firewalls can't coexist. That might be the problem. If not and you have continuing problems Zone alarm is a free alternative that is very good too.

For several days now, I've seen the words 'IPB image' in posts here instead of the picture in several places including Scarlet's signature. Other pictures show up just fine.

I right clicked on the words and was given the option to view the image. A new tab popped up, and then I saw "ad blocked by KPF." So now I knew that the firewall was blocking those images from appearing and identifying them as ads.

Unlike ZoneAlarm's ad-blocking settings which can be set for each site, Ad-blocking in the Kerio Firewall cannot be adjusted on a site by site basis; it's either on or off. Clicking on the 'set' button in the Kerio Firewall adblocking tab, a window pops up with a list of all the blocked ad types. Does anyone know which of these to allow in order to view the IPB images on Bleeping computer? The only option that I have discovered that works thus far is to stop the ad-blocking completely, but since I navigate to other sites when reading posts or articles on this site, I'm leery of doing that even though my default settings block all scripts.

I'm attempting to download an update for Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall (version 4.3.268) but it's taking a ridiculously long time. The rate it's going I should think it'll end up taking longer than three hours, which is a bit odd since to my knowledge it's not that enormous a program. Should it be taking this long or is something wrong? The status bar isn't advancing at all and I don't know if there's a better way to do it.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Assume it's a Kerio-specific problem because everything else on my broadband connection is fine. I'm running XP.

Thanks. Probably a stupid question.

My hard drive crashed a few weeks ago. Computer store said they couldn't recover anything off the hard drive. My neighbor is a computer guy and let me borrow an external device to "read" my hard drive. He suggested using FileRescue to recover the info on the crashed drive. FileRescue has a free trial version and a pay version. What's the difference? Should I just bite the bullet and pay for the full version? I'm really just interested in recovering some pictures and excel spreadsheets. Please advise...

A:Difference between free trial version and pay version of FileRescue

It depends on the extent of the hard drive failure. If the system does not recognise the drive you may not be able to recover anything at all.Typically, the trial version will show you what can be recovered but may not do so or with limited resultsTry Recuva its free and pretty good

Microsoft is forcing everybody to rethink the operating system that everybody loves to hate with Windows 8, and that includes security suite makers. Freeware faves AVG leap into the future today with a touch-friendly interface, a zippy installation, and impressively fast scans.
The upgrades are available at no cost as AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 (download), or as a paid update to AVG Anti-Virus 2013 (download) and AVG Internet Security 2013 (download), exclusively from Download.com today.
Security vendor claims about being faster, or better, or able to protect your computer while doing your dishes, are perennial boasts. At least in the case of AVG 2013, CNET Labs has verified the company's talk about the 2013's performance gains. For our usual battery of tests, we found that AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 actually bested an unprotected computer during the MS Office test. AVG Free completed the MS Office test in 354 seconds, while the unprotected computer took 395 seconds.
When I asked AVG evangelist Tony Anscombe about that, he explained that it has to do with how AVG 2013 performs its scans. "The new Turbo Scan checks files in the order that they're saved to the disk, as opposed to how they're saved in the file directory," he said during an interview at CNET's San Francisco offices in August.
AVG's internal benchmarks clocked "scan times up to 23.95 percent faster," Anscombe said. Meanwhile, CNET Labs' scan time results found... Read more

What does anyone think of AVG Free (9.1)? I have heard that it can be a memory hog (like Norton), can be hard to remove if you decide you don't want to use it, and can be difficult to use. Comments?

A:AVG Free Version 9

I haven't used AVG since version 7.5, where a nasty virus ripped right through it and actually infected the AVG process itself. So AVG was reporting that itself was infected and of course could do nothing about it. It's probably one of the worst AV programs I have ever had the experience of using.

Just as a general rule and without getting to specific programs.

Most of the free AV programs also offer a pay version. Is the pay version better? That is, does it do a better job of blocking viruses? Or are you just paying for added features?

A:Is the Pro/pay version better than the free?

You mostly pay for added features. In some programs, the free version does not include email scanning. Or the support for the product may be limited. Pay versions will include both.
One way to find out what pro vs. free differences are is to use the side-by-side charts most of them have. Then make your decision based on what you feel it's important to have.

IF you decide to go with a paid version, see if it has a free trial. Install it, use it. Is it user friendly?
User interface simple and easy to navigate? How often is it updated? Does it have any negative impact on your system? It won't take long to find out if it's something you want to purchase. If it is, wait until the trial period is almost up. A lot of times, you will be able to purchase it at a discounted price.

I use Avast with my Win 8.1 and have been happy with it til now. I have been getting daily reminders to update my Avast to a premium version and to stop getting the reminders last time, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it making sure I have the Free version downloaded and not a Trail version but it has started to prompt me again after only a few weeks on the new install.

If I have the free version I wouldn't expect to be prompted to upgrade to a paid version or is this what to expect? Is this the same for others that have it?

A:Avast FREE Version....

1. Yes that is what you may expect
However, if you are using Free Antivirus 2015, the only way to disable the sale offers is to upgrade your protection to the paid one.
2. The simple solution is to uninstall AVAST and use the FREE and no sales pop-ups - Windows defender included with 8/8.1
and indeed IMHO your system will run more smoothly and with no problems - as against the use of the FREE Avast.
Avast is good of that there is little doubt, but I am not convinced that the free AVAST is the best for Windows 8.1

I have AVG Free and it is always updated to the latest engine and virus definition files. I have it set to scan every day.

The problem is that the results are the same every day. It finds the same 6 infections but does not heal or remove them. When I manually try to make the program heal or remove them, I get the same error message that the file is too large to move to the virus vault. When I go to TOOLS - ADVANCED SETTINGS - VIRUS VAULT, I have unchecked the selection to limit the size of the virus vault.

If this is left unchecked, there should be no limit to the size of files that are put into the vault, right?

So what is happening is that AVG Free finds the same 6 infections every day, but does nothing about them. I could manually delete these infected files, but then what is the point of the AVG program?

Has anyone else encountered this? I know it is a free program, but does that mean it shouldn't work? I get the feeling that when I unchecked the selection to limit the size of the vault, there was a registry value that was supposed to go from 1 to 0 somewhere in the registry and that it didn't happen.

Any advice? I really do not want to have to uninstall AVG and reinstall it just to get it to remove the infections it finds.

I have used this AV for years over various updates etc. and it has performed superbly.

I would just outline one factor with AVG that is incredibly annoying and at times a nuisance. AVG updates every day, sometimes these are small affairs that do not take long, but mostly they last a long time. The updates take place by scheduled selection time which we choose under Advanced Settings.

Whatever time is chosen, if the PC is shut down or on Standby/Hibernate, the update does not take place on time of course. Then on start up, just when you want to do some work, AVG automatically starts to update. On my machine, this drains every drop of power and my work screens just clag up and go onto "Not Responding". Once AVG plays this game, you can forget your PC until the updating has finished. AVG hogs the lot and leaves nothing for anything else.

Answer ? Just do not check the box under Advanced Schedule Options which says "Run on computer start up if task has been missed". That stops it dead.

OK, you miss AVG updating to schedule and the AVG Colonel`s would go into a heart seizure, but all you do is manually update it when convenient. If you forget and it goes on too long, don`t worry, AVG kindly plonk a nice red screen before your very eyes advising that you are in dreadful peril and to update immediately. No harm done, give a shrug and just do it.

To me, whilst I nurse AVG best I can and try not to forget it`s little updates, it all does not matter too much, s... Read more

I have used the free Roboform on several computers and never had an issue.

Since clean installing Win 7 after a crash, I can not get Roboform to "Auto Save". I contacted Roboform and they gave me several suggestions which I followed, none of which solved my problem.

In IE8 under "Manage Addons" everything concerning Roboform is enabled:

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to get "Auto Save" to work?

Also is there any free programs similar to Roboform that I could use?

Thanks very much

A:Roboform Free Version

In roboform, click on the taskbar icon, click Options, then click Autosave. Check what you have enabled/disabled there. This is what mine looks like.

As for alternatives, I've tested Lastpass and I was really impressed.

LastPass - Password Manager, Form Filler, Password Management

Unlike roboform, lastpass stores your passes online, though I think you can backup those locally. The passes are encrypted on the online server but NOT the master password. So theoretically even if somebody were to hack into those servers, they wouldnt be able to decrypt. Lastpass is free and provides as much functionality as robo. I was seriously thinking of switching but was prevented by sheer laziness. Give it a shot.

Okay so this is sort of frustrating since it was such a hassle for me to even download this version of ZA's free firewall from their site...

It was working beautifully, but now when I try and open my web browser (only if none are already open) then it doesn't work and I get an error saying it couldn't connect and to try again.

The only way for me to rectify this situation is to shut down ZA and open Firefox, and then restart it...Or to restart my computer. Once my browser is loaded, everything seems to be fine...I can open new tabs and windows as usual...this behavior seems to be eradic and is definitely caused by the firewall. Anyone got any ideas about how to fix this? Anyone else experience this with the new ZA firewall?

Well it appears no one else has this problem? I guess I'll have to reinstall it and see if that helps...or switch back to the old version...

"ZA 3.1 Free available to existing Users"

Quote from Zone Labs:
With over 17 million users of ZoneAlarm products, our primary concern with this launch is to provide a satisfactory upgrade experience for folks. To ensure that, we'll be making the upgrade available to a fixed percentage of our existing users every day, through the "Check for Updates" feature. This process will continue for several days before we officially announce ZoneAlarm on our site and make it available to the general public.
