Checking the "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows XP

Q: Checking the "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows XP

for some strange reason I can't seem to check the "Show hidden files and folders" option, every time I do so it reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".

Has anyone had the same problem. This feels so stupid. Please help me. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Checking the "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, guys.

After my pc has been infected by the "bagle prague" (hldrrr/wintems/flec006/srosa) i got cleaned by a software called Regrun. But the malwares have left some problems on my pc. The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i canīt find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted, but it didnīt solve my problem.
The member says to go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden]
and change the value into "group" My problem is : I do not have this last folder in the registry line ("hidden").
I mean, there is [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder] and in this folder ("folder") thereīs no "hidden" folder. So I canīt change the value of "hidden" īcause thereīs no "hidden". Help me please, thanks.

Strange are the ways of Windows. After an episode with a Worm/Small.2.F, I cannot set the option <My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden Files> Once I check this box and click 'Apply', the hidden files don't show and then on clicking 'OK'. it reverts back to <...Do Not Show Hidden Files>. Please help.

I had installed Avast Anti-Virus after the Worm infection because my existing AVG anti-virus was unable to 'delete' or 'heal' infected files (although it did detect them). I've now uninstalled it yet the problem remains (it has occurred after Avast installation though I'm not sure the two are connected). Any Experience, Strength & Hope?!

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Wow, its been a rough one. I usuallly do OK with most tech stuff, but I am baffled. My parents' Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP got a virus which prevented startup. I pulled the hard drive, brought it home, put it in my machine and got it cleaned up, but it still wouldn't start. So, I decided to back up their docs and reformat. When getting ready to backup, I wanted to delete any large unneeded files (java updates and the like) so that it wouldn't take as long.

SO...I opened folder options (in Documents and Settings), clicked on show hidden files. Got an error message and the folder when away. When I look at the drive properties, the disk space has changed. AS IN, the folder was deleted by this action. I am not a noob, so I know that I did not delete the folder through the normal windows process. I am guessing that the issue is related to the original infection.

However, what do you all think: are the folders hidden or deleted? Should I try some recovery utility or is it a simple fix. Or, are their documents (family photos, legal stuff, tax returns) that were never backed up in 5 years gone?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I know very little about sharing in Vista though I've done a bit of reading.

My problem is, when I click on the link "Show me all the files and folders I am sharing" in the Network And Sharing Center, I get a couple of (expected) folders and a gazillion files.

Now I think it's the case that only folders can be shared; that files have no sharing attribute. Files are only shared if they are within shared folders.

My question is, why does the above link give me such a huge list of "shared" files? It's not as if any of them are within the shared folders.

Hi. I'm thinking about repairing Windows 7Home Premium 32bit with the DVD, because of BSOD, but I hesitate.

I first need to know if the backup folder called "Windows.old" will be a COPY (keeps Date Modified but updates Date Created) or a CUT (simply moves all folders to an other, thus doesn't change Date Created). Thanks!
So of course, only those who have ever reinstalled Windows 7 may know the answer. If you don't know but have reinstalled Windows 7 at least once, please spare 30 seconds to check, simply find a file like a picture or music that you had before the reinstall, and see in the bottom bar of explorer if its Date Created is the original or the reinstall date. You can also click Display tab in Explorer, then Sort by > Others > check "Date Created", > OK > Click display again > Sort by > Date Created. Don't mistake with Date Modified, I know the original Date Modified is kept upon copying, but it will update if you modify the file obviously. Please be honest and double check, losing 5.9 years old dates of my past would be heartbreaking, like mixing the pages of my diary!

Date Created is very important to me (and is underrated because it's not the default sorting option unlike Name/Type/Date Modified) because my computer is 5.9 years old, now has thousands of files and folders and it's easy to find them back and organize them with Date Created sorting if I didn't write tags or description in the file name.

I have a HP Pavilion notebook. A bit older I think. It had built in windows Vista Home Premium. Somehow my hard disk crashed and I bought a new one. I installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and updated to service pack 1. I made a system image using windows default recovery console. Everything was fine. But today I needed to restore my computer to a previous restore point. Every time I press F8 to get to the advanced boot option I see everything is okay except the "repair your computer" option. Somehow the "repair your computer" option disappeared. I tried ctrl+F11 button and the F11 button too. F11 button worked for my previous vista home premium but for Win-7 it's the F8 key. Can anyone help me with this please? How may I get the "repair your computer" option back? Is there any way to edit advanced to boot option to get that option back? I would be needing it in case of system image recovery. Please I don't want to reinstall the O/S once again. Please somebody help me.

A:Advanced boot option doesn't show the option "repair your computer"!

On my clean OS install, the "repair your computer" option also does not appear in the F8 Advanced Boot Options list.
The option does appear on my ACER PC.

You can access this option by booting from a System Repair CD/DVD. A system repair CD is a must have.

from here i get to know tht there are some hidden files in my pendrive(usbport) but how to deleted it when it doesnt display when i click the drive...

A:remove hidden files in "USB drive"/ "pendrive"

The files may be tagged as hidden or system files. Assuming you are using some version of MS-Windows on your computer, there are options for Windows Explorer to hide or show certain file types. Setting the options to show all files may cause the files on the drive to appear.

I would use caution when attempting to remove files from the drive. There may be a chance the files are needed for proper operation of the drive.

Under Folder Options, I have the "Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives" checked.

Yet, there is a folder called $RECYCLE.BIN on every drive showing when I'm viewing my folders.

I don't recall it showing before I had to do a malware and virus sweep.

Does this mean it is not a hidden file, or that its attributes were changed?

If so, is it safe to change it back to hidden manually?

A:$RECYCLE.BIN folder shows on drives although "Don't Show Hidden" set

Hello Webbiz,

Yep, if the $RECYCLE.BIN folders are not faded, then it sounds like the hidden and/or system attribute has been cleared for them. You could open a elevated command prompt, and type the command below and press Enter for each $RECYCLE.BIN for each drive letter one at a time to add these attributes back.attrib +s +h "C:\$Recycle.Bin" /s /d
Repeat the command above substituting C for each drive letter you have a $RECYCLE.BIN folder on.

I'm not sure about this one at all.

If after changing the settings on the in title buttons and then hitting the 'apply' tab,my PC freezes and I have to re-boot to 'complete' the action (I did have a shell ext. program for the show hidden files but I removed that).

I tried a system restore but about half way through we had a minor power cut, now I can't (couldn't) restore to any restore points.

I then ran recovery of XP Home SP2, I had to, I found one or two other system files got "lost" during the power cut (notepad, regedit I know about), and then re-applied SP3, I still cannot use these radio buttons without freezing the PC and its just happened with the 'search for network folders etc.' radio button.
I've done a quick check with HJT and can spot nothing un-toward ( I run it quite regularly to keep an eye on things.

Kaspersky AV and Malwarebytes (both up to date) are giving me a clean bill of health so I'm assuming there has to be an issue with the registry ??
At the moment I'm using a script written by Ed Bott to access hidden files etc. and that's working no problems.

Any help appreciated.

Hello there.

As the title says, there are some oddities regarding file/folder highlighting. Whenever I click one, it looks like this:

Then when I click somewhere where it's empty, it looks like this:

Usually it wouldn't remain surrounded by that box, but since yesterday this happens.

See, two days ago I decided to scan my extended HDD and discovered a WORM.Conficker.Y.14 virus on it that I couldn't get rid of. I unplugged it instantly and ran a scan with Avira and Malwarebytes', both in normal mode and in safe mode and no viruses were found. Neither did HiJackThis show any change since the last logs I have created.

Now I'm wondering why that particular occurence described above appears whenever I unclick a folder. Another thing is that Windows Defender isn't under Control Panel > System Security anymore (I'm sure it was there before). I have to either change the view setting to big/small symbols or use the search field to find it.

Could these two things be tied together with that virus?

Please tell me that I'm just a crazy, paranoid idiot who cares too much about his precious new laptop he holds dear so much.

Sorry for any inconvenience. I know I can be annoying but I'd like this to be resolved. :S

I've installed Windows 7 from fresh again, and was able to delete a good portion of the contents of the Windows.old folder.

However there is still some SecureRom files inside of it that when I try to delete them, it simply says they don't exist. So it won't let me delete the Windows.old folder because of those files.

I tried the SecureRom remover tool but it can't remove them since they are from an old Windows 7 installation that must have been installed when I installed some game that uses SecureRom.

Any clue how to get rid of them so that I can finally delete the dang Windows.old folder?

A:How to delete "Windows.old" when it still has SecureRom files/folders

Well found out how, so if anybody else has this issue...

1. Open up the command prompt and go into the folder that holds those files that look like gibberish.
2. Make sure to do a dir inside the folder to ensure you are only seeing the securerom files and are in the right location.
3. Do a del *.* and answer Yes to the prompt to delete them.
4. Close command prompt window and open Windows explorer and then delete the Windows.old folder

What I found under Windows 7, when you use the "Show Desktop" feature (I prefer the ? Win + D shortcut) and then bring all windows back by using it again, some windows behave as if they're glued to the front of the z-order. What this means is, say, I have windows
A B and C open, with focus on A, hit ? Win +D twice, and now it may happen that if I then want to switch to B or C, either by Alt+Tab or by selecting them on the taskbar, the taskbar shows the highlight, but A stays visible (and usable, it's not just a rendering
issue) in the foreground.

Imagine the following situations, all three windows cascading and overlapping:

A (focus)

-> ? Win + D

Desktop (focus)

-> ? Win + D

A (focus)

-> click C on taskbar

C (focus)

B (focus)

And so on. Focus means actual input focus, i.e. in second situation, any keyboard typing is sent to window B while window A is in the foreground.

It does not matter what kind of application; in my current case an instance of Outlook and an instance of Explorer is stuck, while a second instance of Explorer and an instance of Firefox behave normally. This should show that this problem can occur even between
multiple instances of the same application, and that there are no fancy applications involved that like to pretend they are the most important program and internally force "always on top".

Hey guys,
I want to keep only "Favorite Links" in explorer's navigation pane with "Folders" hidden by default, but seems there is no way. is that so?

Ideally I want all folders to have the same template with "details" view sorted by date, but after finishing all tutorials on this forum I still have stupid "Tiles" if explorer called with "Win+E" combination

Any suggestions?

A:How-to get "Folders" always hidden in navigation pane?

Hello Almakos,

You can drag the line above "Folders" to the bottom to not have the "Folders" section to display in the navigation pane anymore.

Favorite Links - Hide

Hope this helps,

Earlier too I had similar problem It was due to w32sillydc problem. I got it solved with this forum's help at W32.sillydc Infection, Infection to usb pen drive and then to desktop- unable to removeAfter that I loaded spybot search & destroy free, windows defender free , AVG 7.5 free , Spywareblaster free , Superantispyware, a2 free version, I also have latest yahoo tool bar spyware scanning tool, and even clamwin.Ok. Still I was infected by virus through a USB pen drive. But this time I do not why and how. It seems Spybot S&D did not work? I rbr that I ddenied changes to my registry and told it to remember my decision also as that message was repeatedly coming fast and even though once I told it to remember the box kept coming and vanishing near m system tray. It was disturbing me a lot. So i rebooted.. and maybe then in that rebooting time or some gap when spybot was not functioning it got installed?? This is question-1 . What do you think the reason for the infection was? Ok before you reply to above let me tell you that all the signs of infection I got was that my hidden files and folders got hidden and could not be restored using tools options feature!Yet no amount of scanning and even online scan through panda and trendmicro and norton could find it (Bitdefender does not work on my pC for some reason)And I also used a RRT. exe program from the internet. It just made my hidden files and folders visible. And then I could not see any autorun.onf file&#... Read more

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have the microsoft lifecam cinema and the latest version of msn.
I only have the option to start a video call, no option exists for "show my webcam" its not even there as an option, totally gone (not even greyed out)

Help plz

A:MSN: no option to "show my webcam"

I have the same problem. I have upgraded my WLM to the latest version today after reinstalling the immediate previous version, which was crashing to often (Windows 7 64 bits). After I logged in the SHOW WEBCAM option was GONE for good (for bad would be more appropriate in this case). Have tried sign out/sign in thousands of times, nothing works. This is pretty lame from Microsoft. Every time I am forced to use a video call (which still works), my image quality is very bad. The Logitech Quickcam PRO 4000 webcam works perfect with all other applications. The same happens with a Notebook I have with Quickcam Pro for Notebooks, and the notebook is running XP SP3. Both machines are 100% updated, all drivers latest version. Running the ANCIENT MSN Messenger 7 shows the webcam perfectly. How come Microsoft releases a new version of WLM with a stupid bug like this? People rely on WLM for communications with friends and family worldwide. Hope someone there fix this soon, if they have any interest in doing so anyway.

If someone knows a work around (not the sign in and sign out one or disconnecting and reconnecting the webcam) it will be highly appreciated.

Good luck to us all........

I have this strange thing happening. I'm using Windows XP. In Windows Explorer, in the Tools, Folder Options dialog box, when I select "Show hidden files and folders", then click Apply and OK, the hidden files and folders are not shown. When I go back into the dialog box, the option is not selected anymore. Instead it reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".I quickly searched online and people are saying its a virus. I scanned the PC with Avast Antivirus, Eset Online, Trend Micro Housecall Online, Defender, AVG Anti Virus, Spybot, Ad-aware, Super Antispyware, Rougeremover, Panda Online, SDFix., Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Deckard's System Scanner. Besides tracking cookies, Avast was the only scan to find something. I used the "Delete" option when I was asked what to do. After the scans, the problem still occurs.I posted the Avast and Hijack this log below. Hope you can hlep. A:Won't "show Hidden Files And Folders"

Hello sungod000I apologize for the delay in response as we get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.If you have since resolved the original problem you were having would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine. Thanks and again sorry for the delay. Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.alternate download siteDSS will do the following:Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.Close all applications and windows.Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
malicious. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:main.txt <- this one will be maximizedextra.txt <- this one will be minimizedIf not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. Please copy (Ctrl+C) and past... Read more
