ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Q: ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

Hi,  We have recently discovered that acording to early adopters X1C6 throttles heavily. Please see this reddit thread for details. We are trying to reach out to as many X1 Carbon Gen6, X1 Yoga Gen3, T480s, T480 owners as we can to get more data on the subject. You can post your results here or in the reddit thread. Hopefully some comment from Lenovo will come once we have anough data to present.  Thank you,Will

This post is partially to request assistance and partially to voice aggravation and disappointment. My old laptop was failing and I was in need of one for travel with WWAN capability. I initially bought an X1C6 that showed the WWAN card as enabled in BIOS. When I found out that the card was not present, I returned the laptop. After doing further research, I settled on a T480s that was WWAN upgradable, expectating a wait for the EM7565 with FRU 01AX762. Now the Fibocom L850-GL with FRU 01AX786 is available for new builds, but I cannot find where to buy it on the site or elsewhere; if this is not simply due to me being unable to navigate the poorly-designed Lenovo site, it effectively punishes anyone who ordered early. Finally, I tried my old EM7345 with FRU 04X6014 and encountered the 1802 error for an unauthorized device. Researching that further led to understand that Lenovo uses a whitelist - another punishment. I am now ready to return this laptop as well unless I can make some progress before traveling again. I would not be surprised if a class-action lawsuit were brought against Lenovo and any other manufacturers restricting individuals from making use of their own legitimately purchased hardware, especially when false or incomplete information is pushed by the company. If anyone knows where to obtain either LTE card, I would appreciate it.

Looks like the Fibocom is available on the Lenovo Encompass site based on the part number you posted.

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

Apparently some people have this problem of getting permanent keyboard marks on their screens. Obviously applying enough pressure on the surface would do this, but for normal usage, is this something I need to worry about?

I had some marks that were hard to clean off on my old X1 Carbon Gen 3 after about 2 yrs of use. During that time I took a two-month trip and the backpad design may have applied a lot of pressure on the covers while I flew between Europe and Canada.

Hi there, i recently bought a new X1C6 with i7 8550. I wanted to use it for university and as a midrange gaming station (egpu) at home. But my plans started to fail as i got fps drops in almost all games. I did some information gathering and saw the following: At first the CPU starts to boost to pl2 (29W) for 30s or so. After that it drops the TDP to 23W (thats pl1). After a while i can see in hwinfo64 that the pl1 slowly starts to drop to 13W without any reason! My temps are pretty pretty good even at 29W it barely touches 90C and at 23W it hovers between 70 and 75C.Is this normal behavior of U-CPUs?Can i do something to prevent dropping?

Hey,I bought the new X1C& about a month ago and so far I'm really happy with it. However, there's one thing that starts to annoy me more and more If I "soft-tip" the right side of the touchpad, there is a relaltively loud clicking noise. On the other side it seems normal. I am curious if other X1C6 experience the same behaviour and I wanted to ask if there is anything I can do about it.Here is a video of the clicking noise in comparison to the normal side:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1Y9kH4U5Wo I know it's complaining on a high comfort level but small things like this can be annoying in daily use. Best regards!

Greetings fellow Thinkpadders. I received my X1C6 about two weeks ago, and all is well except the fingerprint reader. I am patched up to date according to both Windows Update and Vantage, and that has included two BIOS updates since I first unboxed it. The fingerprint reader does not come back after a sleep or hibernate. That is, if I Restart, I can log in with my fingerprint -- the white LED is on and so forth. But if I suspend and resume, no white LED, and fingerprint doesn't work at Windows Logon -- I have to use my PIN or password. Vantage's hardware scan shows nothing wrong. Any hints or advice appreciated. Serial# PF0YSFED, Product# 20KH002KUS, BIOS N23ET37W 1.12, Windows 10.0.16299 (Build 16299)

Anyone finding stability with the X1C6 and the Ultra Dock to not be perfect?  I'm finding sometimes the laptop won't wake from sleep properly, requiring me to hit the power button on the dock (to put back into sleep) and then to hit the power button again (to wake it up, which usually resolves the issue).  Sometimes when it wakes from sleep, I lose my background (just a teal colour) and it goes to a black background (which I can revert back to teal right away in my desktop options).  Also, every time I wake up, I find all my open apps are now only on Monitor 1 instead of where I left them (some on Monitor 1, some on Monitor 2) requiring me to spend a few seconds reorganizing.  Finally, I find that each time I wake up, some (not all) of the icons in my taskbar next to the clock begin to get blurry, with each wake worse until I log out / log back in.   I do keep the laptop in clamshell mode when docked, with only my two external monitors in use and I have the laptop set up to not sleep when I close the laptop lid to ensure clamshell is as stable as possible.   All of my drivers are up to date, and I am on the Windows 10 April update that just came out (but the issues began before the update).  I never had issues like this on previous ThinkPad models with the previous Ultra Dock or OneLink Plus docks.

I've been troubleshooting random errors (most of which were resolved when I corrected the jumper settings for the CPU), mostly freezing during bootup or problems with the ATA RAID driver. My original set of problems can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/t247393&highlight=acpi+uniprocessor.html
The computer still freezes one out of every 4 bootups while the Windows splash screen is showing, and I have gotten the occasional blue screen ("Driver IRQ not less or equal" the only recurring one). A friend of a friend is certain that the problem is the HAL driver, and I'm curious about what the difference between the drivers is.

My AMD XP 2500 Soyo board (single processor board) under Win2K SP4 is using an ACPI Uniprocessor setup... he says it should just read "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC"... is there a difference? Is it possible that I should switch to the second one to change any issues my computer might be having?
If not, what should I be looking for that might be causing the freezing on bootup?

Lenovo Facebook support sent me here to post the issue as they expect it to be a Firmware/Driver problem: There is a serious compatibility issue between the T480s and the iPhone8 - tested on various units of both devices, with various cables. All BIOS/FW/SW/Drivers on both devices were updated, issues remain before and after Updates: It is not possible to connect iPhone8 via USB to T480s - or only after several attempts or a reboot. On the right USB port connection goes on and off in seconds, on the left port charging connection remains stable, but no data connection is posible. We tested this with 4 different T480s, 6 different iPhone8 models and various different cables - therefore it is definitely a FW/Driver Issue on the Lenovo side - as the phones work with any other Notebook. If the phone however is attached to the right port while the Notebook is booting, iPhone8 asks for authorization (while T480s boots) and then everything works fine. Lenovo Facebook support says this clearly points out to a driver/firmware issue. Trying to plug in the USB port not all the way in but leave a 2-3mm space before the USB cable fully contacts the port (as suggested by Lenovo Facebook support) does not help. Sooo there we are - we tested and replicated this issue with several brand new T480s-machines (core i5-8350U) and a number of different iPhone8 with different cables. What solution does the Lenovo engineers propose? BestCarLazar

Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so.  1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on?  4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them?  Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u).  Thanks!

Please advise if Lenovo can deliver T580 with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional as out of box delivery so save several tinkering hours at user's garage. It had been tremendous performance issues with T570 with Windows 10 resource hog experience. I would not prefer to run Windows 10 again on T580 - high performance machine hogged by Windows 10. If Lenovo could pre-install downgrade option out of the box that would save several hours of research by end users, T580 with Windows 7 would perform more stable and solid provided if they have enabled all the drivers to function properly.  This has been hugely frustrating experiencing to deal with T570 machine running Windows-10 Pro, I had to dump the machine. I dont have much confidence to run T580 on windows 10 pro, it would not even match T520 machine ( 7 years old machine) running on Windows -10. Looking forward for the solution, request Lenovo team to enable Downgrade option as part of the customization to save users's time and stable user experience. If Lenovo Does not deliver out of the box, first thing to do after the machine is to wipe out Windows 10 to install, Please let us know if the drivers available or I would be placing a ticket to go through 100 steps to get it done.  Thank you,Mamba.

Hi,I have a brand new thinkpad T580.When I am playing audio, I get a random crackle or popping sound. This gets progressively worse the longer I listen. Stopping and restarting the audio seems to resolve the issue temporarily, but after about 10 mins its back. This issue also seems to be worse while charging or if the CPU load is high.Possibly related is the fact that my fan seems to be spinning faster than it should. Im running an SSD so shouldnt be producing too much heat but its always noticable. Assuming it was the media player, I have tried a veriety of players including just playing windows sounds so its not the software. The sound is the same if i use speakers or headphones or laptop speaker,I also have done full driver updates and bios update to latest version. Thanks,

Hey folks,I just purchased a T580 from Lenovo.com this month. I received it and upon opening immediately noticed a continuous sharp edge all along the three sides of the keyboard/computer part of the laptop. The screen is fine, this is only along the edges of the base portion, and not including the back edge where the screen hinges.  The textured surface on top of the base seems to have a sharp, possibly unfinished edge. I have spoken with the support line and haven?t gotten far.  I would like to compare my laptop to a T580 in store but cannot find one.   Its hard to photograph but I think I?ve captured it here just above the fan openings. If you zoom you can see the light from what I call a sharp edge. The fact that there is a change in angle at all in thus location leads me to believe it is a production oversight. I do believe I could whip this unit into shape with an emory board, but why settle for a less than excellent product.  So my question to the forums is, can anyone attest to this being the normal fit and finish for these T580?s?  Is this a problem or is this the expectation. Has anyone else experienced this issue?Zoom to the center of the picture and you can see the sharp edge along the bottom edge of the top piece of material

I've shortlisted the T580 for a purchase, just wanted to ask what Lenovo's attitude to linux installs is. ThinkPads are well supported in Linux but how does that reflect in warranty provision, service etc? (obviosuly, service would not be expected for a custom installed OS like Linux).

I just wonder whether any issues may receive a "Oh, you installed Linux... tut tut... that is the problem." regardless of what issue one might have.

I've read that the fingerprint reader does not work in Linux. Is this still true ? If so, does that affect the NFC ? I ask because I noticed you can't select NFC without the fingerprint reader when configuring the system. I suspect that's because the NFC is provided by the fingerprint reader?

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum as I just bought a nice T580 with i7 8550U Intel CPU. So far the machine is amazing, it's my first Lenovo (I'm coming from a MS Surface Pro 3) and I'm happy with it, except for one thing: When AC is plugged on, the CPU clock always goes to max speed (3.8-4.0GHz), even if the load is at 0%. That means that the laptot heats more and the fan kicks in very fast if you start to do something, even if it's only web browsing. That's really annoying.Everything goes back to normal if I unplug AC and work on battery. The CPU immediately lowers the clock, as you can see on my screens. Here are all the tricks I already tried: - Changing power modes by clicking on the battery icon on the desktop. This doesn't do anything when AC is plugged. But this works perfectly if I unplug it.- Resetting the BIOS. No changes.- Changing BIOS AC power settings with the same values as for battery power settings. No changes on Windows 10, still at 100% clock speed.- Restoring Windows 10. 2 times. Still no changes. I even used the Lenovo recovery tool to factory reset it. It's not a software problem as this happens already after the very first startup of Windows 10.- Downgrade the BIOS to rev. 1.06. No changes. I'm currently using the latest 1.09. I don't know what to do now. I asked some people on Reddit and they don't seem to have the problem. I run out of ideas. Could you help me? Thank's in advance for all your answers!Florian... Read more

Hi, just got the T580 but kicking myself that I did not get the back lit keyboard. What do you guys think - does it make much difference? Is it the same feel as the normal keyboard? Is it possible to swap out?  If so where is the best place to get the part?  Thanks.

T580 (fresh from factory).  Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 driver (12/27/2017 - 23.20.16.4905).  Intel Core i7 vPro 8th Gen.  Windows 10 64 bit (freshly updated).  Lenovo Vantage system update freshly updated.  (today's date: 4/28/2018) LG display plugged into HDMI port on Thunderbolt adapter which is plugged into the USB-C port on left side.HP display plugged into HDMI port on right side. Either display is detected just fine if I unplug the other one; but when both are present, it only detects one of them. This exact configuration was working fine on my T470, Intel Core i5, vPro, 7th Gen. So, bigger and better (and more $$) is worse. My bet would be on a driver issue.  (Windows won't let me install the Intel April 2018 driver - it says probably because the manufacturer did custom driver coding.)

A:T580 Won't detect a second external monitor

UPDATE: Well, ok, it DOES appear to TRY to "detect" the display when I first plug it in.  But it has no properties (e.g., Resolution) and the #3 icon on the layout panel soon disappears and clicking the Detect button won't bring it back (unless I unplug my other monitor - then it detects fine and works fine).

HI, Everyone     I just bought my first T580 and got a Transcend MTS-400 128GB M.2 2242 ssd to do a custom upgrade my self. After carefuly watch the Lenovo tutorial video on Youtube, I installed the ssd on the 2nd PCIe slot. After boot into the  Bios, the Bios couldn't detect the new ssd. Updated the Bios to the newest version and still no luck. So I spend some time searching online and found the following post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470-unable-to-detect-M-2-SSD-2242-after... It looks like some compatibility issue with certain brand of m.2 2242 SSD. I wonder if that's the case for my new T580? Does Lenovo ever comes out with a list of m.2 ssd that their Thinkpad is compatible with?

I have a ThinkPad T580 with the Ultra Dock (40AJ0135US) and I'm wanting to use two external 4k monitors. I found this post (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/How-many-DisplayPorts-are-available-on-t...) that seems to indicate that this cannot be done, but it doesn't make sense since the dock utilizes two USB-C connections from the T580. Can a DP and USB-C on the dock be used for two 4k monitors? Is there any combination of ports that would allow the dock to support two 4ks? Will Lenovo be releasing a monitor compatibility matrix soon for their new laptop lineup, like this one: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd029622#USB-C%20dock ? I appreciate any help!
