ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Q: ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode.  How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

A:T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

This post is partially to request assistance and partially to voice aggravation and disappointment. My old laptop was failing and I was in need of one for travel with WWAN capability. I initially bought an X1C6 that showed the WWAN card as enabled in BIOS. When I found out that the card was not present, I returned the laptop. After doing further research, I settled on a T480s that was WWAN upgradable, expectating a wait for the EM7565 with FRU 01AX762. Now the Fibocom L850-GL with FRU 01AX786 is available for new builds, but I cannot find where to buy it on the site or elsewhere; if this is not simply due to me being unable to navigate the poorly-designed Lenovo site, it effectively punishes anyone who ordered early. Finally, I tried my old EM7345 with FRU 04X6014 and encountered the 1802 error for an unauthorized device. Researching that further led to understand that Lenovo uses a whitelist - another punishment. I am now ready to return this laptop as well unless I can make some progress before traveling again. I would not be surprised if a class-action lawsuit were brought against Lenovo and any other manufacturers restricting individuals from making use of their own legitimately purchased hardware, especially when false or incomplete information is pushed by the company. If anyone knows where to obtain either LTE card, I would appreciate it.

Looks like the Fibocom is available on the Lenovo Encompass site based on the part number you posted.

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

Windows Update is pushing an Intel graphics driver for T480 and T480s that is broken on Windows 10 Pro 1803 OEM. The recommended update on the Lenovo Support site is also broken. After Windows Update has installed this driver, the screen goes black and I have a blinking cursor. The only thing that works is to turn the laptop off and on again but then after initializing windows I'm supposed to be getting the login screen but instead I get a completely backlit black screen that doesn't respond to anything - no cursor, no blinking, nothing. The workaround is topower off and on 3 times in order to go into safe modeuninstall the graphics card driver in Device Manager and check the box to delete the driver fileschange from Yes (recommended) to No (your device might not work as expected) in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Installation Settings->Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices.I've experienced this on 2 T480s and 1 T480 in the last 30 hours, so I know it's a general issue. I can reproduce the issue with a brand new laptop fresh out of the box, not domain-joined. The driver that works is from March 2018. Any drivers after this date seem to produce the above issue. The issue doesn't seem to exist on Windows 10 Pro 1709.

I've been troubleshooting random errors (most of which were resolved when I corrected the jumper settings for the CPU), mostly freezing during bootup or problems with the ATA RAID driver. My original set of problems can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/t247393&highlight=acpi+uniprocessor.html
The computer still freezes one out of every 4 bootups while the Windows splash screen is showing, and I have gotten the occasional blue screen ("Driver IRQ not less or equal" the only recurring one). A friend of a friend is certain that the problem is the HAL driver, and I'm curious about what the difference between the drivers is.

My AMD XP 2500 Soyo board (single processor board) under Win2K SP4 is using an ACPI Uniprocessor setup... he says it should just read "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC"... is there a difference? Is it possible that I should switch to the second one to change any issues my computer might be having?
If not, what should I be looking for that might be causing the freezing on bootup?

Long story short. I had Lenovo replace my top case because the left click button wasn't working. Yes, they replaced the entire top case including keyboard and pointer. They did not replace the trackpad though.  So the keyboard that originally came with my laptop which was built in Nov 2018, was a lot stiffer. I was getting a lot of mistype due to me not applying enough pressure. This replacement keyboard though, oh my, it's perfect! The strokes are a lot softer and my typing accuracy went way up.  If you do not like your keyboard for some reason, you should maybe goto a Costco and bring your laptop to do a compare. I think they are not using the same supplier for some of these keyboards. I like my replacement one a lot more than the original one that came with the laptop.

A:X1C6: Not all keyboards are the same

All models have multiple suppliers for keyboards and other parts, like LCDs, SSDs, etc.  Some people prefer one over another; some like the other one, and some see no difference.

I've read several posts regarding the X1C6 & the HDR screen and its pretty tempting to grab right now with the fantastic Lenovo sales prices...but wanted an opinion on a few things about it or whether I should just wait for the X1C7? 1) Right now, I can get the WQHD (matte) w/512GB SSD or the HDR w/1TB SSD for REALLY great prices with the current Lenovo sales. Price really isn't an issue for me give the current great prices. I could order an HDR now since I can return it up until 1/15/19 with the holiday return policy...and wait until CES in January to see if they put a matte screen on the X1C7's HDR option. Would be a small return window I guess?Thoughts? 2) The main debate that I have, as does everyone it seems, is whether to get the X1C6 HDR or not given:a) the better qualityb) the glossy v matte debate (I have always had matte but also like quality for photo editing and everyone RAVES about this screen)c) the extra taxing the HDR puts on the machine overall (throttling, etc.)d) the loss of additional battery life due to the HDRI have read where at least the last two issues have been quelled some with software/BIOS updates. Thoughts?3) Matte screen protector... Would I lose a lot of the quality benefits of the HDR with one on (ie, would it degrade it to a level higher/lower than a WQHD 300 nit)?4) I plan to drive either two 24" monitors, or one 34/38" ultra-wide, with this machine. Is either config possible without a dock?5) The most intensive work I do is me... Read more

I'm posting this for others considering this model.  I was cautious given all the complaints about heat, fan, throttling, TB3 Dock issues, etc., etc. After several days setting it up and using it and one day with TB3 Dock connected, I have nothing but positive to report.  It came with 1.22 BIOS and I'm hesitant to update as no problems are evident.  I will ask in a separate thread about that. Temps run between 50 and 70 Centigrade.  A bit warmer than my P50, but I guess still in normal range.  Fan does run, probably at lower speed.  I can't hear it unless I put my ear close or feel the hot air coming out of the right side.  I am using only a single monitor connected to the TB3 Dock.  I tried using the laptop screen and the monitor as extended (dual monitors) and it worked fine.  I'm connecting the monitor to the Dock by HDMI.  I ran the X1 at work yesterday on battery.  9:00am to 6:00pm and still had 30% left!  Moderate use.  I'm not always on the computer at work, but still....! Anyway, I would have appreciated a post like this when I decided to take the risk and order one.  I know forums typically only have problems, but it looked like worse than usual.  I hope this is reassuring to someone. Cheers!

Lenovo Facebook support sent me here to post the issue as they expect it to be a Firmware/Driver problem: There is a serious compatibility issue between the T480s and the iPhone8 - tested on various units of both devices, with various cables. All BIOS/FW/SW/Drivers on both devices were updated, issues remain before and after Updates: It is not possible to connect iPhone8 via USB to T480s - or only after several attempts or a reboot. On the right USB port connection goes on and off in seconds, on the left port charging connection remains stable, but no data connection is posible. We tested this with 4 different T480s, 6 different iPhone8 models and various different cables - therefore it is definitely a FW/Driver Issue on the Lenovo side - as the phones work with any other Notebook. If the phone however is attached to the right port while the Notebook is booting, iPhone8 asks for authorization (while T480s boots) and then everything works fine. Lenovo Facebook support says this clearly points out to a driver/firmware issue. Trying to plug in the USB port not all the way in but leave a 2-3mm space before the USB cable fully contacts the port (as suggested by Lenovo Facebook support) does not help. Sooo there we are - we tested and replicated this issue with several brand new T480s-machines (core i5-8350U) and a number of different iPhone8 with different cables. What solution does the Lenovo engineers propose? BestCarLazar

Hi Everyone, I just received my new X1 Carbon 6th Gen (20KHCTO1WW) and everything was running smoothly until yesterday when I did my first driver/firmware update via the Lenovo System Update App. A bunch of things got updated, including the BIOS, and after reboot everything was ok except for my keyboard (Apple USB, wired) that was not recognized by Windows (the logitech mouse is fine). I first thought it was a problem with Windows drivers and tried to play around the Device Manager to uninstall/reinstall drivers but after rebooting into the BIOS, I realized the keyboard was not working there either. Strange right? To me a basic USB Keyboard should work straight away during boot time and if it is not working in the BIOS, there is no chance Windows could do anything about it. So I guessed, this happened after the BIOS upgrade (to 1.34) and thus I tried to disable secure boot and run the legacy Bios but without success (by the way I don't see any visual difference between Lenovo legacy bios and UEFI is that normal?). => If some of you have clues about why it is not working, I would be thankful! Notes:- I've tried both USB ports and with other devices --> they are ok- The keyboard was working fine before the update- The keyboard is still working fine behind a Thunderbol dock- They keyboard is working fine on another computer (lenovo)- The kyeboard is not working on my wife's Lenovo X1 Yoga fully updated --> It seems related between to these m... Hello,I recently picked up a 6th gen X1 Carbon and have been having intermittent issues with a second monitor connected via the USB-C port.I currently have two displays set up, both Acer 20" with DVI and VGA female ports. One monitor is connected via HDMI out to DVI in and the second via the USB-C out to converter (VGA in) and then out to monitor VGA. Most of the time this works fine and I've been able to set up to get full HD on each. Intermittently though the right monitor (USB-C>VGA>VGA) loses signal prompted by moving some application (eg, FF browser, VLC) to the second monitor, but this doesn't happen with all applications nor even given applications each time. As this only happens when prompted by moving an application I'm guessing this is some driver/hardware quirk.I tried a Google search as well as pouring over the forum but didn't turn up much. Are there known issues with dual displays on the X1C6 and/or any known remedies? Also, are there generally preferred out ports people use to connect dual external monitors? HDMI seemed like the natural first choice but I'm not sure if there's a preference otherwise from the bevy of USB ports.Regards,Chris

I've had my X1C6 connected to a caldigit TS3 thunderbolt hub since August.  This morning when I turned the laptop on the hub was not found - looked to me like the hub was dead - no power to the Laptop and its internal indicator light didn't come on.  I was convinced the Caldigit hub was dead. So I plugged the Caldigit TS3 into the only other USB C host I own - a Lenovo Yoga 900.  The Yoga doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, BUT the hub woke up - its little indicator came on and I got a windows error about not not supporting a Thunderbolt device. I put the Caldigit TS3 back on the X1C6 and this time it came on - providing power to the laptop and its local indicator light was on.  However in Device manager all the hub devices had the yellow exclamation on them.  So I deleted all the erroring devices, rebooted and voila now the hub is working fine again...... What the Heck happened to me!?  Was it a microsoft issue, a lenovo issue or a caldigit problem!?  Times like this I really hate technology! If anyone can provide any insight or clues I'd appreciate it!

I've bought an X1C6 this October (Core i5-8250U/8/256/Win10Pro), and after several days the sound started disappearing. The symptoms are:- the problem may appear while running any program that streams or plays video, or even a game;- the problem usually appears when the sound is muted, but not always;- when it happens, the File Explorer freezes (although apps may run) and I can't change the sound volume and the diode on the F1 buttons is always ON, whatever I do;- after several seconds the freeze goes, and I am able to change the volume levels again both with the Fn buttons and the slider in the tray, but there's no sound. The OS thinks the volume is being changed and shows volume levels changing when playing any sound;- sound works normally via the HDMI. The system restart may help, only after several days, it stops helping. Then the reset button may help, or it may not.The Windows reset doesn't help at all. Tried that a couple of times.I tried running Ubuntu from a liveUSB, the symptoms are the same.I even installed the OS anew (used the Lenovo USB Recovery Tool trying to fix another problem) - that didn't help either. I asked the local Lenovo support to send me a new motherboard, and they did, only the service decided it was the audio card that's separate from the motherboard (I didn't know it at the time, but why didn't support think of that?) We put my audio card back and it worked again for several days until it stopped again. So physically re-connect... Read more

Hey everyone, I am trying to update the BIOS to v1.31 on my new X1C6 running Ubuntu 18.04 to enable S3 deep sleep. When I run the command 'fwupdmgr update' as described in many online guides, I get the message 'Not compatible with firmware version 0.1.15, requires >= 0.1.27'. Any ideas on how to update the firmware to allow the BIOS update? I can't find any information on the forums. Thanks!

Hi there, i recently bought a new X1C6 with i7 8550. I wanted to use it for university and as a midrange gaming station (egpu) at home. But my plans started to fail as i got fps drops in almost all games. I did some information gathering and saw the following: At first the CPU starts to boost to pl2 (29W) for 30s or so. After that it drops the TDP to 23W (thats pl1). After a while i can see in hwinfo64 that the pl1 slowly starts to drop to 13W without any reason! My temps are pretty pretty good even at 29W it barely touches 90C and at 23W it hovers between 70 and 75C.Is this normal behavior of U-CPUs?Can i do something to prevent dropping?

Hey Folks! I've been searching for an external USB3 (thunderbolt, if such exists) for my X1 Carbon 6th Generation. I've found some on Amazon, eBay, BestBuy, NewEgg ...walmart. I haven't found anything that seems rated well. Are they all kinda crap? I don't have to have an ultraslim if a non-slim is the best quality/ price. I'd be grateful if you wise ones have any drive suggestions or warnings. Cheers! Ian

I have an X1 Carbon 6th Gen with a strange Bluetooth problem. When playing audio through a Bluetooth device, the audio stream will frequently go silent for varying periods of time. Sometimes it's for only a few seconds, and then the unplayed audio will play very quickly before normal playback resumes. More frequently, though, audio simply drops out for multiple minutes, then resumes as though nothing had happened. I have not found any events in Event Viewer that correspond to the failures. The Bluetooth device remains paired throughout the audio silence, according to Windows settings. It is not restricted to any particular program, as the audio failures happen whether playing something in iTunes, Chrome, or anywhere else. It affects all audio on the system when audio drops out, not just the audio from that application; system sounds cannot be heard during the silent period. The volume bars in the mixer continue to move, though, even while the audio cannot be heard. The Windows audio troubleshooter does not detect any problems during the period of silence. Things I have tried:running the Windows audio troubleshooter - does nothingusing a different Bluetooth audio device - tried both Apple AirPods and Beats Studio 3 headphonesupdating the Bluetooth drivers - current version installed is 20.90.0.3, which is the latest available from Intel's website; also tried 20.70, which is what Lenovo Vantage offeredAny insight would be appreciated.

Everything seems to be running fine.  Temps between 50 and 70 C, both standalone and docked to TB3 Dock.  Anything in 1.25 that would suggest I should update? Thanks,

Hi there everyone, Does anyone here have a comparison of the battery life for the 3 different screen options for the US launched yoga models?  I'm just trying to figure out what the battery life hit is like between the screen options, but my google-fu is failing me. Thanks!
