ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Q: ACPI bug - affects X1C6, T480s, T480, T580, possibly more.

Hello, There's a bug in the ACPI tables that affects all of the machines listed in the title. The bug causes heavy CPU usage on one thread due to frequent ACPI interrupts. The symptoms are a slow system, and high CPU temperatures (idles around 65 degrees Celsius). Some operating systems may mitigate the symptoms, but the bug is present regardless. The following circumstances trigger it:-powering on the laptop-waking from suspend (and possibly hibernate - untested) The following actions prevent it:-reboot the laptop (temporary fix)-disable thunderbolt in the UEFI settings (permanent fix - with latest UEFI updates) The official UEFI update changelogs for all of these machines make explicit mention of this issue: "-(Fix) Fix an issue where system may become hot by system interrupts when Thundrebolt is disabled in ThinkPad Setup - Security - I/O Port Access." Unfortunately, the bug was not actually fixed. The solution that was implemented is only a bandage for the "disabled" thunderbolt state. This patch should resolve the problem. This patch would then remove the bandage of the official fix, since it should no longer be necessary. I will leave that for your engineers to decide. These patches were made for the T480s, but should apply equally to all affected machines.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This bug deserves more attention than it is currently receiving. It should be pinned in every forum with an affected machine, so that the owners of those machines are aware that it exists. It is currently squirreled away in the T series forum, under the outdated title "T480s - ACPI bug". I have asked that the thread title be updated and received no response. I have to presume that Lenovo did not see my request (in which case, they'll see it now). It would also be nice to get some kind of status update. For example, I am still waiting for confirmation that the patches from the newer thread were sent to engineering (see this message).

Hi,  We have recently discovered that acording to early adopters X1C6 throttles heavily. Please see this reddit thread for details. We are trying to reach out to as many X1 Carbon Gen6, X1 Yoga Gen3, T480s, T480 owners as we can to get more data on the subject. You can post your results here or in the reddit thread. Hopefully some comment from Lenovo will come once we have anough data to present.  Thank you,Will

This post is partially to request assistance and partially to voice aggravation and disappointment. My old laptop was failing and I was in need of one for travel with WWAN capability. I initially bought an X1C6 that showed the WWAN card as enabled in BIOS. When I found out that the card was not present, I returned the laptop. After doing further research, I settled on a T480s that was WWAN upgradable, expectating a wait for the EM7565 with FRU 01AX762. Now the Fibocom L850-GL with FRU 01AX786 is available for new builds, but I cannot find where to buy it on the site or elsewhere; if this is not simply due to me being unable to navigate the poorly-designed Lenovo site, it effectively punishes anyone who ordered early. Finally, I tried my old EM7345 with FRU 04X6014 and encountered the 1802 error for an unauthorized device. Researching that further led to understand that Lenovo uses a whitelist - another punishment. I am now ready to return this laptop as well unless I can make some progress before traveling again. I would not be surprised if a class-action lawsuit were brought against Lenovo and any other manufacturers restricting individuals from making use of their own legitimately purchased hardware, especially when false or incomplete information is pushed by the company. If anyone knows where to obtain either LTE card, I would appreciate it.

Looks like the Fibocom is available on the Lenovo Encompass site based on the part number you posted.

I currently have T580 with pre-installed WWAN module (Fibocom L850-GL) and trying to get to work it on Linux. It works perfectly fine on Windows. So far I discovered that Windows driver uses PCIe protocol to communicate with WWAN module, but Linux is supported apparently only through USB protocol, and if PCIe is enabled, the module ignores all USB commands according to its hardware specs document (page 26) - https://www.mev-elektronik.com/files/MEV%20Elektronik%20Service/produkt-downloads/rf-microwave-wirel... Fibocom recommendation is to disable PCIe in BIOS, that is not supported by stock ThinkPad. Thus in Linux the device is only displayed as "Wireless controller: [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device 7360 (rev 01)" through lspci , and nothing on lsusb . Any suggestions how to make it work on Linux? As an alternative I'm considering getting another WWAN module, but it's quite likely it will not work due to whitelists. The only other module that is whitelisted for sure is L830-EB, that does not have global coverage and thus doesn't work in the US or China, even so it was reported that it's Linux-compatible (USB-mode only). Maybe there is a patched BIOS that has whitelists removed? Wondering if there are Linux enthusiasts who are also looking for a way of using WWAN.

Dear Readers, I am planning to buy a new Thinkpad T serie 14 inch and I am wondering which model I should pick.By any chance, does anybody know which housing (chassis) has the best build quality in terms of thermal design and fan noise? In other words which of the three housings will be running the coolest and quietest? Is it a good reason to think it should be the t480 because it has more room for airflow? Thank you in advance!

Hi there, I would appreciate any feedback on the actual difference between these T and L series laptops. I am returning to a Thinkpad (last one was T410s) after a few desolate years with the Yoga Pro 3. My usage is home business that requires regular videoconerencing and typical web navigation/document processing. Security features are important.  I have been anxiously awaiting the quad core 2018 releases as I was told by one of my IT guys that quad core best supports consistent high quality video.  I had assumed I would return to T series and didn't really even know the L series existed until a few weeks ago. As I'm comparing them though I'm wondering if the extra $ for the T-series is really worth it. I know all these laptops are  new so I don't imagine too many people have had experiences with them, but any research you've done or experience with their predecessors would be helpful. Last time I wandered from the T series I regretted it and don't want to make that mistake again.  I'm only looking at 8th Gen processors. Prefer the i7, but am curious if that will really make a significant difference over an i5 for my particular usage needs. Will buy with or upgrade to at least 16GB RAM. Do like the touchscreen but can live without it.  Thanks! Sean

Windows Update is pushing an Intel graphics driver for T480 and T480s that is broken on Windows 10 Pro 1803 OEM. The recommended update on the Lenovo Support site is also broken. After Windows Update has installed this driver, the screen goes black and I have a blinking cursor. The only thing that works is to turn the laptop off and on again but then after initializing windows I'm supposed to be getting the login screen but instead I get a completely backlit black screen that doesn't respond to anything - no cursor, no blinking, nothing. The workaround is topower off and on 3 times in order to go into safe modeuninstall the graphics card driver in Device Manager and check the box to delete the driver fileschange from Yes (recommended) to No (your device might not work as expected) in Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Installation Settings->Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices.I've experienced this on 2 T480s and 1 T480 in the last 30 hours, so I know it's a general issue. I can reproduce the issue with a brand new laptop fresh out of the box, not domain-joined. The driver that works is from March 2018. Any drivers after this date seem to produce the above issue. The issue doesn't seem to exist on Windows 10 Pro 1709.

I've been troubleshooting random errors (most of which were resolved when I corrected the jumper settings for the CPU), mostly freezing during bootup or problems with the ATA RAID driver. My original set of problems can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/t247393&highlight=acpi+uniprocessor.html
The computer still freezes one out of every 4 bootups while the Windows splash screen is showing, and I have gotten the occasional blue screen ("Driver IRQ not less or equal" the only recurring one). A friend of a friend is certain that the problem is the HAL driver, and I'm curious about what the difference between the drivers is.

My AMD XP 2500 Soyo board (single processor board) under Win2K SP4 is using an ACPI Uniprocessor setup... he says it should just read "Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC"... is there a difference? Is it possible that I should switch to the second one to change any issues my computer might be having?
If not, what should I be looking for that might be causing the freezing on bootup?

I'm posting this for others considering this model.  I was cautious given all the complaints about heat, fan, throttling, TB3 Dock issues, etc., etc. After several days setting it up and using it and one day with TB3 Dock connected, I have nothing but positive to report.  It came with 1.22 BIOS and I'm hesitant to update as no problems are evident.  I will ask in a separate thread about that. Temps run between 50 and 70 Centigrade.  A bit warmer than my P50, but I guess still in normal range.  Fan does run, probably at lower speed.  I can't hear it unless I put my ear close or feel the hot air coming out of the right side.  I am using only a single monitor connected to the TB3 Dock.  I tried using the laptop screen and the monitor as extended (dual monitors) and it worked fine.  I'm connecting the monitor to the Dock by HDMI.  I ran the X1 at work yesterday on battery.  9:00am to 6:00pm and still had 30% left!  Moderate use.  I'm not always on the computer at work, but still....! Anyway, I would have appreciated a post like this when I decided to take the risk and order one.  I know forums typically only have problems, but it looked like worse than usual.  I hope this is reassuring to someone. Cheers!

Dear all, I just had my SSD replaced by Lenovo after a firmware update nuked the drive. I used the Lenovo USB recovery key software to obtain the original image file for my laptop and just reinstalled & updated everything. However, i'm finding out that the monitor is now recognized by windows as a SDR monitor and not for the HDR capable display that it is. Where I could view the windows test video and select Youtube video's in EDGE before, now I can't. Also all the Wide Color Gamut options in Lenovo Vantage don't seem to have any effect anymore. Things i've tried- Windows is updated fully- All drivers are update through lenovo vantage- I manually reinstalled the monitor driver from the lenovo support website. The device drive shows the monitor as the Wide Gamut .... monitor This feature worked flawlessly before the SSD swap/reinstall. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello,I recently picked up a 6th gen X1 Carbon and have been having intermittent issues with a second monitor connected via the USB-C port.I currently have two displays set up, both Acer 20" with DVI and VGA female ports. One monitor is connected via HDMI out to DVI in and the second via the USB-C out to converter (VGA in) and then out to monitor VGA. Most of the time this works fine and I've been able to set up to get full HD on each. Intermittently though the right monitor (USB-C>VGA>VGA) loses signal prompted by moving some application (eg, FF browser, VLC) to the second monitor, but this doesn't happen with all applications nor even given applications each time. As this only happens when prompted by moving an application I'm guessing this is some driver/hardware quirk.I tried a Google search as well as pouring over the forum but didn't turn up much. Are there known issues with dual displays on the X1C6 and/or any known remedies? Also, are there generally preferred out ports people use to connect dual external monitors? HDMI seemed like the natural first choice but I'm not sure if there's a preference otherwise from the bevy of USB ports.Regards,Chris

Hi there, i recently bought a new X1C6 with i7 8550. I wanted to use it for university and as a midrange gaming station (egpu) at home. But my plans started to fail as i got fps drops in almost all games. I did some information gathering and saw the following: At first the CPU starts to boost to pl2 (29W) for 30s or so. After that it drops the TDP to 23W (thats pl1). After a while i can see in hwinfo64 that the pl1 slowly starts to drop to 13W without any reason! My temps are pretty pretty good even at 29W it barely touches 90C and at 23W it hovers between 70 and 75C.Is this normal behavior of U-CPUs?Can i do something to prevent dropping?

Greetings fellow Thinkpadders. I received my X1C6 about two weeks ago, and all is well except the fingerprint reader. I am patched up to date according to both Windows Update and Vantage, and that has included two BIOS updates since I first unboxed it. The fingerprint reader does not come back after a sleep or hibernate. That is, if I Restart, I can log in with my fingerprint -- the white LED is on and so forth. But if I suspend and resume, no white LED, and fingerprint doesn't work at Windows Logon -- I have to use my PIN or password. Vantage's hardware scan shows nothing wrong. Anyone finding stability with the X1C6 and the Ultra Dock to not be perfect?  I'm finding sometimes the laptop won't wake from sleep properly, requiring me to hit the power button on the dock (to put back into sleep) and then to hit the power button again (to wake it up, which usually resolves the issue).  Sometimes when it wakes from sleep, I lose my background (just a teal colour) and it goes to a black background (which I can revert back to teal right away in my desktop options).  Also, every time I wake up, I find all my open apps are now only on Monitor 1 instead of where I left them (some on Monitor 1, some on Monitor 2) requiring me to spend a few seconds reorganizing.  Finally, I find that each time I wake up, some (not all) of the icons in my taskbar next to the clock begin to get blurry, with each wake worse until I log out / log back in.   I do keep the laptop in clamshell mode when docked, with only my two external monitors in use and I have the laptop set up to not sleep when I close the laptop lid to ensure clamshell is as stable as possible.   All of my drivers are up to date, and I am on the Windows 10 April update that just came out (but the issues began before the update).  I never had issues like this on previous ThinkPad models with the previous Ultra Dock or OneLink Plus docks.

Lenovo Facebook support sent me here to post the issue as they expect it to be a Firmware/Driver problem: There is a serious compatibility issue between the T480s and the iPhone8 - tested on various units of both devices, with various cables. All BIOS/FW/SW/Drivers on both devices were updated, issues remain before and after Updates: It is not possible to connect iPhone8 via USB to T480s - or only after several attempts or a reboot. On the right USB port connection goes on and off in seconds, on the left port charging connection remains stable, but no data connection is posible. We tested this with 4 different T480s, 6 different iPhone8 models and various different cables - therefore it is definitely a FW/Driver Issue on the Lenovo side - as the phones work with any other Notebook. If the phone however is attached to the right port while the Notebook is booting, iPhone8 asks for authorization (while T480s boots) and then everything works fine. Lenovo Facebook support says this clearly points out to a driver/firmware issue. Trying to plug in the USB port not all the way in but leave a 2-3mm space before the USB cable fully contacts the port (as suggested by Lenovo Facebook support) does not help. Sooo there we are - we tested and replicated this issue with several brand new T480s-machines (core i5-8350U) and a number of different iPhone8 with different cables. What solution does the Lenovo engineers propose? BestCarLazar

Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so.  1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on?  4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them?  Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u).  Thanks!

I have a brand new T580 in front of me. I am trying unsuccessfully to boot it from a USB stick. In case it makes any difference I am trying to do this before ever booting into Windows. Here is what I have tried. First attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F12 at Startup Interupt Menu; Select my USB drive from list; Hit Enter; screen goes back for about one second and then the F12 menu reappears like nothing happened. Force power off by pressing and holding the power button. Second attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F1 at Startup Interupt Menu; to eter the BIOS Setup. Disable secure boot (Security > Secure Boot). Save (F10); repeat first attempt. Same result. Third attempt: as before except that I additionally set Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both and tried again. Same result. Fourth attmpt: as before except that I changed the boot priority to put legacy first. Same result. Fifth attempt: as before except that I set  Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot  to Legacy Only. Same result. The USB stick has Grub on it and boots Linux distributions. It works in about a dozen other machines that I use it on regularly.  I tried two separate USB sticks and I tried both USB ports on the right-hand side of the computer. If I can't get this to work then it's going back. I am stuck. Please help!

Hello,I'm interested in buying a T580 thinkpad and got some questions: 1. does the 4K display consumes more battery power than the FHD display? 2. for those customers with 4k display - are you satisfied with that choice? (are the fonts readable)2. in reality, how long does the battery last with standard use? (with all types of rear batteries)?3. how is your overall impression of this model? Thanks, Johnny

I'm about to order a T580 today and I see there is a choice of "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear". Does anyone own the 48Wh battery for the T580 (or T570) so that they can confirm if the 48Wh batter sticks out at all? I want a battery that does not raise the laptop. Also where can I buy a second (spare) battery that is exactly the same as the "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear"? Thanks in advance. My first post!

Hello, As the title states. Is it possible to upgrade the CPU in my T580? That is -- through Lenovo. I believe I read that the CPU is soldered in, I'd imagine if I went through Lenovo they could maybe handle this task?  Thanks.

A:Possible to Upgrade T580 CPU?

You could, for example, swap an i5 motherboard for an i7, but it would be cheaper to sell yours and buy a machine that meets your needs.

Spoiler (Highlight to read)Machine: T580Issue: new RAM not recognized by BIOS or Windows 10Good afternoon, I would like to ask for help on a RAM issue I have been experiencing. I have tried scouring other forums and various websites to see if I could find a solution. I have not been able to resolve my issue.Issue: The system does not recognize the upgraded RAM installed into the MOBO. Only 16 of the 32 GB are detected. I have verified on the Lenovo website that the computer can handle up to 32GB RAM.Troubleshooting done:1) swapped RAM into each slot2) Verified the RAM are seated properly in the slot3) Checked MSCONFIG to ensure there is no max RAM checkbox enabled4) Verified that in the BIOS, it only detects 16GB instead of 32GB5) Using one of the BIOS tools to perform a system check on memory to ensure that nothing is out of order.RAM purchasedatriot Memory VIPER 4 series 32 GB (2x16GB) 2400Mhz SODIMM DDR4 PV432G240C5SKAny suggestions would be greatly appreciated!JakeUpdate:1) I removed one of the RAM chips from the machine and determined that the RAM still in the machine was detectable.2) Using the same slot, I inserted the 2nd RAM chip... voila... faulty RAM chip.Machine: T580Issue: new RAM not recognized by BIOS or Windows 10Good afternoon, I would like to ask for help on a RAM issue I have been experiencing. Hi everyone, basically I have the same problem as previously mentioned in other threads, but the solution providied, isn?t applicable for my case. The fan turns on if  you?re only webbrowsing or doing some editing work in word, which obviously shouldn?t be the case.I run Win10 Pro. All updates and drivers seem up to date, at least Win10 says so.How do I check if it?s really the case? BIOS is 1.09. Setting the battery plan doesn?t have an effect. Coming from a reddit post, ist was suggested, that I should ask @someotherguy if a solution he proposed for other models, also works for T580. Everything is explained in the following reddit  thread. http://reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/8f24ki/t580_fan_turning_on_cpu_10/dy1cw9u Help would be greatly appreciated. Please note, that I am not as tech?savvy as you are, so please keep it in mind, if you?re answering(read: talk to me like i?m an idiot ) ?

First... long time T series user going back to the initial ones. Had been using a T520 up until I finally gave in and purchased a T580 over the BF in July sale. Since I have been using a dock for a long time and like the convenience factor I got the Pro Dock (40AH0135US) to go along with the T580. Long story short... the first T580 arrives with a blown system board. I send it back and 11 days later another T580 arrives. This one boots and has no issues off the dock. It's fast and definitely an upgrade from the T520. First thing I notice in placing it on the dock is that the side mount process is tedious. Reading other posts seems to confirm that experience. It's nowhere near as well engineered as the bottom dock solution and I spend more time trying to insert the dock mechanism than I ever had with the legacy dock solutions. I eventually get things perfectly aligned and power on. Right off the neither external monitor is working. I have two Dell UHD monitors connected to the DP's on the dock and neither comes on. I mess with the cables and nothing, I take the T580 off and re-insert... nothing. I call Lenovo and without even trying to diagnose the issue they issue an RMA for the dock. I get another dock 2 days later and this one works for exactly 1 day. The external monitors work and then 10 hours later when I come home from my job and place the T580 on the dock they don't work. Nothing changes but somehow things are back to not working again. To be clear at no point from powe... Read more

I am trying to figure out if I can use a 3 monitor setup with my T580 laptop.  I have the laptop docked on the 'ThinkPad Pro Docking Station'.  I am using the two DisplayPorts from that to go to two HP EliteDisplay E243i monitors.  I have a third monitor, a HP Compaq LA2206x that I connected to the HDMI port on the laptop but when running any of the monitors from the dock, the HP Compaq will not be detected.  The integrated graphics card says it can drive 3 monitors so I'm not sure why this won't work?  Does the HDMI port go to sleep/shut off when monitors are being used through the dock?
