Here's the Microsoft Download of the utility that will prevent booby-trapped word [.rtf] files from infecting your computer.

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Fix It Tool for Disable opening RTF content in Microsoft Word

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi: I am new here. The problem that i have that is bugging me is that every time I open a Word document (I have Word 2000 SP-3), when I open the "Tools" drop down menu, I notice there are dozens of "mail merge" commands in the drop down. I was able to erase these somehow before using the help feature in Word. Now, I can't remember how to do it, and I'm just sick of it. I've never used the mail merge function, so I have no idea why it does this. Also, I'm worried that my computer could be infected with something, although my antivirus software has never picked anything up.Thanks!(Moderator edit: moved post to more appropriate forum. jgweed)

Hi

Here is a strange one. I have Microsoft Word 2000 on a computer running Windows XP SP3. I just began having a problem opening documents directly in Word. The documents will open but they are not right. For example, I have a document that is passworded out. Within Word, the document will open, but it does not ask for a password, and the contents of the document come up scrambled. Here is an excerpt of what it looks like:

+??+??7k'?p%V9
q|?F
t?Uzjikvn?nnU
b*79g?CAg?
t???c\0B?~I?_sD
l%*~tL
T,?*O?>.???l?C?
Ab/hA>[S?

This goes on for 20 pages.

However, if I go into Windows Explorer and open the document by double clicking on it there, it correctly asks for the password and opens fine. Weird, no?

I tried opening other documents from Word that do not have passwords. They open, but the documents include a bunch of formatting instructions that usually remain hidden. But from Windows Explorer they open fine. Here is an example:

Document opened with Windows Explorer

Blaine
Blair
Brody
Bryce
EVAN: English form of Welsh Iefan, meaning "God is gracious."
Lucas
Quentin

Same document opened from within Word:

Hey, my laptop overheated with Word open and the only way I could shut my computer off was to take the battery out and leave it and my laptop to cool down. When I put it back in my laptop just started running something called 'system restore' or something? It took a few hours to work and now my laptop works normally, except for word. Also I can't open anything to so with word, all my documents etc. So far I've troubleshooted the program, tried to run it by opening 'run' and I've restored my computer a second time but so far none of these have worked!
Any ideas that don't involve me deleting it and re-installing it? I need to keep my documents.
Any help much appreciated

Hello everyone, I've been having some issues with Word 97 lately and I'm absolutely stumped. Any help would be wonderful...

Twice now, I've had Word 97 tell me that it cannot open select documents; a few weeks ago I tried to open a doc and it gave me this message:

Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
* On the File menu, click Open to open the document.
* Make sure the file has a .DOC extension

I did both; it would not open from the File menu and it DID have a .doc extension. I tried everything I could think of to get it back, including moving it to another computer and trying to open in there, renaming the document, everything. The closest I got to getting it back was opening it in WordPad - even then, it ate certain paragraphs up and lost the last page completely.

After having no luck at getting it back, I decided that since the document was only 3 pages long, I could stand to retype it and deleted the document. I had no problems opening up any of my many other documents; and so I figured, somehow that one file got corrupted and I just needed to cut it as a loss.

But now, it has happened again with another, much longer document. Again, I can get some of it back with WordPad/RTF, but not all of it. As before, all other documents are fine and openable, just not this one. I have scanned for viruses and the like - my computer seems to be clean. I have moved all my other documents to a removable flash drive so that they don't... Read more

Windows 7 Home with MS Office 2007 installed. The issue is specific to WORD. If we open the WORD application and then navigate to a file, the file opens OK. If on the other hand, we navigate to a file, we get an error message...."There was a problem sending the command to the program." I've already researched the web for answers and tried 3 different solutions offered to no avail. We did a repair via the Office CDs and that did not fix the problem.

Here is another observation: If we navigate to an EXCEL file, EXCEL opens the file "DIRECTLY" with no problems. The EXCEL files are in the same folder as the WORD files. If we attempt to open a WORD file, we will get a USER ACCOUNT CONTROL window first and then the error message. The USER ACCOUNT CONTROL window does not appear when opening an EXCEL file.

Looking at the Control Panel and Default programs, the DOCX and DOC extensions are all properly set to be opened by Microsoft Office 2007 Word.

Any ideas on how to solve this one will be appreciated. We have thought about reloading WORD but I frankly to not think this is an application problem. I believe this to be a file linkage to the program problem.

Hello,

I recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean. I am not sure where to go from here. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there guys.
Okay so here's the issue.
I have an HP Pavillion a813w that had Microsoft Works pre-installed on my computer.

Now, I just did a roll back, totally reformated my computer on April 10th to total factory settings once more, so my computer is relatively unbuggy, or so I thought.
However, when I was sent a document from a friend today via AIM, and I scanned it with my virus scanner, it was clean. It had me say yes, I agree to the EULA, and then as it was loading up, it just seemed to disappear, I couldn't open up the document, and I have tried rebooting, and restoring both and it would do nothing.

I'm wondering if there's a reason for this..

I'm trying to figure this out, first time I've ever had Works do this, before I reformated that is.

Hi all,

I recently opened my a document from a couple years ago (Microsoft Word 2010 Starter), and it is opening up with a strange formatting - almost as if it were in Safe Mode, it has shifted from one to one and a half pages, the letters are almost blurry and spaced out. The same document opens fine on different computers. Some older documents open fine, which is also confounding.

About a year ago, I had a ZeroAccess Rootkit. To remedy it, I used Farbar Recovery Scan, Combofix, EEK, and Online Scanner. Not sure if this would have an impact.

How can I get Word to open documents properly?

Thanks

A:Microsoft Word 2010 Docs Opening With Strange Formatting

Are you still using the same version of 'Word 2010 ?  If you are, it sounds like the file has got corrupted somehow, if not, it could be a compatibility issue.

You could try downloading and installing Libre Office and seeing if it opens properly in that - www.libreoffice.org - it can open a wide variety of files. If it does open looking 'right' in Libre then you can save it as a Word Document (with a different name) and then see if your version of Word will open this new version of the file.

Libre Office natively saves files in its own format but is capable also of saving them in a very wide rage of different ones. And if you don't like it, you can always uninstall it !

Hi Tapsee.

Do you have CenterTools DriveLock? If so, uninstall it, at least as a test.

If you dont have it, then I would say that a stray crash dump is not enough to debug an issue. Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

So let us know the results.

A:Does Vista Microsoft Word Support Old Format Microsoft Word?

I'm assuming you're talking about the new office 2007? meaning word 2007?

If that is the case, then yes it does run older versions of word. In the sense that if you have a word document that was made and saved in Word 2003 it would work in 2007.

Just like when you make something in word 2007 you are able to save it as a Word 03-07 document so it works on both versions of Microsoft Word.

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer.  I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer.  I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.

I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel.  However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish.  I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.

I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem.  I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... it is preparing to install microsoft word 2000 (i already have it installed) then it states that it must gather the required information. At first i thought it was an update so i decided to let it continue. when it was finished it said that "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not availible. please insert the microsoft word 2000 disk and hit ok" alright the thing was it wasn't an update. and i couldn't find my word CD because it hasn't asked for one ever since i installed it. I then hit cancel and everything went away and about a minute later my microsoft word 2000 came up and it had no updates and was functioning fine but it was going about half the speed it usually does. Other than that there were no other problems and i continued with my work. The only thing that really bugs me is that this entire process takes about 5 minutes every time I start up... so its kinda of a pain... is there any way to get rid of this? thx to all... Peace Out

What version are you using?

e.g. for 2003:

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

Hi guys, first off I haven't been here for help in years literally this was the first place I thought of because a few years ago many generous people helped me solve my problem, this place is awesome. Please pardon me as I am only decently literate with computers but try my best.

Ok I am trying to solve an annoying problem for my parent's computer. My dad was typing a normal document in Microsoft Word (OS is XP with System Pack 2, and it is Word 2002) and he said that just yesterday for the first time, after typing for maybe a half hour, a window would pop up with a "runtime error" and it would freeze untill he clicked ok on it, and it would then shut down loosing all his work that he didn't save.

So I got on the computer and opened Microsoft Word, and was able to duplicate the problem time after time but not every single time. When I simply open word, then click to close Word, the box appears, and he verified it is the same box he saw. It says exactly as follows, no more, no less, and every time reads the same -

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination

So I tried to research it, and came across a fix on Microsoft's support site saying remove something called COM Add-ins. I did so by following each step removing the one COM add in i found, and it did not resolve the problem at all. It still errors out. SO I grabbed the master disk and un... Read more

A:Solved: Microsoft Word keeps throwing up "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" Error, Arghh!

First, welcome back!!! (although, vaguely, it's like seeing your cousin after many years at a funeral...nice to see you, sorry about the circumstances....)
Well, this isn't fun - the more I looked, the more "answers" and causes I found...

(I think you probably did what the above is about - COM add-ins)
and two that seem similar, but aren't the same (good ol' MS!)

I have decided to try to fix a problem on my computer with the Microsoft Fix It thing that Microsoft lets us use. Unfortunately, it not only did nothing for my problem (Which I no longer care about), but it did something to Microsoft Works Word Processor, the one that comes with windows. I already tried a system restore, but I've had it for too long so my restore didn't go back far enough.

The error itself says, "Works cannot access one or more files it needs to run the Word Processor. The files may have been renamed, deleted, or moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then starting the program again." Unfortunately I don't know if it has actually been moved or deleted and I don't know how to reinstall it. Any help would be great.

A:Microsoft Fix It messed up Microsoft Word.

If it came with Vista, it may be in Control Panel>Programmes and Features with the Windows Components list opened. You might be able to repair it that way. Failing that, if you had a Vista DVD or made a recovery set of your own, see if that can help.

It sounds like your margins are too narrow for the printer. Try adjusting them.

Hello,

I am using Windows 7 with Office 2010 on a 3-month old Sony Vaio and had absolutely no problems until I recently downloaded several automatic MS updates (Windows, security, etc ...). Now the content of most websites is inaccessible through Modzilla Firefox and Exporer, through Google Chrome gives me access to a few of them.

The odd thing is that I can get onto most of the websites, but then the content is all skewed to one side and/or the links don't work (or I can't get onto the site at all).

In an attempt to reverse the problem, I started uninstalling some of the recently downloaded updates (unfortunately, there were 40 or 50 in all), but am hesitant to uninstall all of the security updates in the event that they are important and/or may not be the source of the problem.

Any advice (the simpler, the better) would be be much appreciated.

Thanks!

A:Microsoft updates messed up my access to website content

Hello Canadian_Ninja And welcome to TSF,

Generally when updates screw up the system, it's easier to just restore the system to it's previous working state. Every time Windows initiates an update, it creates a restore point that you can go back to, just in case something like this happens.

Go to Start > Search.
Type "rstrui" without the quotes > Hit ENTER.
Choose the restorepoint/date when it previously worked > Restore.
