Computer problem - computer froze, when restarted, blank black screen w/ mouse

Q: Computer problem - computer froze, when restarted, blank black screen w/ mouse

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I started my computer after getting back from somewhere, and it booted fine and everything. I then went to Google Chrome and my computer froze before loading my homepage. So the only thing I was able to do is restart by holding the power button. My computer then turned on, all fans came on, I heard the harddrive reading, but no beep and no display. The monitor says it's in power-saving mode. I tried reseating the RAM, removing the RAM, reseated the video card and all PCI components. Still couldn't get the beep sound nor any display. What happened and how do I fix this? Do I need a new video card? I use VGA cord.

I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8.1 Pro about a week ago. Everything seems fine, unless I leave the computer idle for a long time. What happens is I get a black screen, with no cursor, when I return to the computer after leaving it idle overnight. It is not asleep. It is also not frozen. I can tell because I am able to reboot it while it's like this by:

Press: WIN+R
Type: shutdown /r /f [ENTER]
Wait 90 seconds.
The computer reboots just fine when I do this. Could it be a bad display driver perhaps? I have an AMD Radeon HD 7950 and am using the latest display drivers from AMD.

A:Black screen WITHOUT cursor, but the computer is not froze

Hello Wepp,

I may have SOME solutions to your problem. I have not encountered this problem myself. I also have some questions too.
Can you be sure it's a graphics driver issue?
Have you got the recent update for your driver?
64-bit or 32-bit?
What type of AMD Graphics Driver do you have?
Desktop/Laptop?
Can you open any files/programs?? Or the WHOLE screen is black and cannot click?
If you need support for you AMD Radeon HD 7950 click here

You may try these:
SAVE ANY IMPORTANT FILES YOU MAY HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED!
Solution 1 (Safe Mode): Shutdown your whole PC/Laptop with a "power down" option until you computer is completely off. Make sure it is plugged in. Turn it on. As soon as you see the manufacturer name appear and the "loading circle" with the dots, HOLD Shift + HOLD F8 until you get to the Safe Mode Boot screen. Also, if this is a Driver issue, uninstall the Driver you believe is causing the problem. If you cannot find Driver downloads online, reply to me and I will try and help you. Try the AMD Driver first, the downloads for the Drivers are here

Solution 2: Open Command Prompt (CMD), if you do not have access to it for some reason hold your Windows Key and Press R like you did (WIN+R), type the following: shutdown /r /o. Until the loading screen "You're about to be signed off" has appeared, press "Close" or "Cancel". If you see "Please wait" this means you will be directed to the Advanced Startup Options ... I woke up this morning to find my computer was frozen. So I forced it to restart by holding down the power button. Once it was booting back up I walked away from my pc for an hour and when I came back it just has a message saying "Cleaning up... Do not turn off your computer." It has been like this for over 4 hours.

What causes my pc to go through this cleaning up phase and how long does it take?
Also is it safe to restart my pc at any point if this takes way to long?

Thanks.

A:Computer froze, force restarted, now message saying "cleaning up"

Frozen, but booted and inside Windows?

From the way you phrase the question, I assume this freeze did NOT happen when you started--your PC was already running and it froze when you woke it out of a sleep state?

It may be running Windows Updates or a checkdisk or ?

I'd leave it overnight at least if I could stand it

This problem started just last night and I've gone through a series of possibilities, and I'm pretty sure I've ruled out it being the Video Card, at this point I'm assuming it is the Hard Drive, but I wanted to get an opinion that has actual value rather than my own >.<

Last night I shut down my computer via start menu and went to turn it back on and when I did the screen went blank/black after the "boot menu" (not 100% sure what that menu is called, its where its kind of blue (i have an hp) and you can hit Esc, F9, F10, F11). After that happened I figured oh well maybe it just loaded wrong, so I shut it off, now when I hit the power button, rather than having to hold it down, I just press it once even lightly and it just shuts down completely. Normally when you hit it you have to hold it down to shut it down completely (or so I think).

Now I'm currently using an 'Nvidia GeForce GTX 260' video card, I swapped that out with a working one which was an 'Nvidia GeForce GT 520', not 100% sure if the 2 were compatible or not, but it fit and everything ok. Computer still did the same thing with the other video card. I didn't try the current one (in the broken computer) in the working computer, to rule it out completely. I just assuming that was the cast, besides it wouldn't fit in the other computer, or didn't have some of the cords.

Which is why I came to the assumption it is the Hard Drive, A; (as... Read more

See if you can boot off something like Hiren's Boot CD and then run a hard drive diagnostic tool.

That will rule in or out a hard drive problem. It could be that your Windows system files got corrupted and maybe you could fix by doing a repair of Windows from a Windows 7 dvd.

I restarted my computer, turned it on and off, unplugged the power cord, but no luck. my monitor does detect the computer but the screen is just black (if i unplug the monitor cable, the monitor will notify me that nothing is detected)

this has happen to me on many occasions already, everytime i restart my computer, the screen goes black and nothing comes up. every time i want to restart my computer, i have to turn it off and turn it back on for it to work, but this time, after turning it on and off, the computer screen is black and nothing comes up. (When i press the restart button on my computer, the screen goes blank /black, so i have to hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it off and then turn it back on) i dont know if it's graphics card or the motherboard. the computer just suddenly freezes and i had to restart it, so i turn the computer off and then on, and the screen comes out black. the computer is on but the screen is blank. the problem is not the monitor for sure because i used it with another computer and it worked fine.

Hello everyone. Thanks in advance for reading my post.

When I turn on my computer it boots up to a blank black screen with only the mouse pointer arrow showing.

A little history.....
Yesterday I purchased a DVD writer and installed it and it worked just fine. Today I ran spybot SD update and then ran the immunize feature which also seemed to work fine. At the same time I was updating itunes to Version 9.0 when I got a small windows error. I don't know exactly what it said because I didn't have time to read it but it had something about win32 and that it was malicious software and would shut down windows.

I've tried to boot up with my last known configuration that worked. I've tried safe mode, safe mode with networking. None of these do anything different. All I get is the blank black screen with the white windows mouse cursor (which I can move about the screen). Which does me no good ;) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. I have AVG on my computer but didn't run it last night - unfortunately I was in the middle of downloading some music and when it started the automatic system scan I stopped it (dummy) so that it wouldn't slow down my download. Wish I hadn't did that.

Thanks,

Amil Singh

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).
The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.
A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.
So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.
I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

A:Computer startup black and blank screen

I figured out that in my display settings instead of showing my main monitor it only shows "mobile pc display". I know that means from a mobile device but I don't see the option to change back to the main screen. By using the previously mentioned app it changed my settings and so now I don't know how to get the main display screen.
I tried restoring to a previous version before but that didn't do anything, so I'm guessing it didn't fix the display issue. I also tried reinstalling the driver at least twice and nothing.

My computer hanged up, I ran safe mode and found out it froze at agp440.sys. I used the recovery console to disable that, but now it hangs at Mup.sys.

I tried doing a chkdisk, but I am confused as what exactly to type?

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../proddocs/en-us/bootcons_chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true

So what I type in recovery console is exactly:

chkdsk[C:][/p][/r]

But it says the command is not recognized? Can somebody please tell me how to fix what I wrote? When I type chkdsk it just tells me the status but I need it to run the chkdsk and recover errors. Thank you so much in advance!!!!

A:Computer Screen Black/Blank - Hang Up at Mup.sys

Hi!

To run Checkdisk, use the following command:
chkdsk /rClick to expand...

*there is only on space, it's between "chkdsk" and "/r"

To run it on a specific drive (in this example, drive c):
chkdsk c: /rClick to expand...

BTW, sometimes safe mode can take a very long time to load (up to 10 minutes) and only seems to hang at a certain point.

My computer is a Windows Vista Home Premium x64 with NVDIVIA drivers. The computer in question is not functioning yet, as it repeatedly crashes and sends me to a blank, black screen, as if the computer had been restarted. What other specs do I need to provide, and what tests do I need to run so that I can provide you with the necessary information for optimal assistance?

Additional info: About two weeks ago, my computer had many BSODS, usually back to back, until , magically, they all stopped I occurring after my dad opened up the computer to clean the dust out. I have not had a single bsod since, and this current series of crashes started after my pc froze(while audio was on; said audio was on loop but only a fraction of the audio).

Right now, the computer will no start up anything, not even a load up screen. I have to wait about twenty minutes while the computer is powered off for anything to load after I power it up. Is this an indication of the problem at hand?

A:Computer randomly crashes into a blank, black screen

That could be one of multiple things.
Overheating can cause the computer to shut itself down, especially if you have to wait for it to cool off to use it. Considering it was cleaned recently it is possible that this is not the problem. But the fact that you need to wait a period of time before it starts up suggests that heating is still the cause.

It can also be caused by faulty RAM. I suggest you run Memtest and see if the RAM might be damaged.

To make it easier to identify your problem, it would be useful to know your computer's specs.
Is it pre-built, and if so, what is the Make and Model details?
If its custom built, list the specs here, also including the Power Supply Unit's make and power output, as that can also cause freezes.

A:Monitor goes black, computer must be restarted

i believe from what you are describing is your video card is overheating or starting to die. Mine would shut off in the middle of just browsing before it went all together. Also when it finally did go it took out the psu too.
Try backing down the video settings on the game too see if that stops it from happening.

so one day (9 weeks ago) my computer crashed on boot up for no reason( right before you get to the log in screen ) then it restarted and I got a black screen, so I turned it off to restart. So since then I may get 1 of 5 things: a black screen, a black screen with mouse pointer, its starts up but the desktop icons don't work including taskbar, task manager and my computer, its crash(occasionally) or its just starts up normally. I think it's the expolrer.exe because one time when it started up to the black screen with mouse I was able to pull up the task manager and then I run explorer.exe and the desktop appeared, so it worked that one time.

A:My computer went black and tatted beeping after I restarted ...

Oarellano921:  Just need a little bit more information: 1.  Could you please post the exact model of your Envy and the year of manufacture of the PC? 2.  Does the beeping occur immediately after you attempt to start the PC?  By this I mean before or during the BIOS initialization sequence where you can see the HP logo.   Alternatively, are able to boot into Windows and find the beeps happening then?  This could also happen after the initial boot sequence when Windows is attempting to load.  It helps to know exactly when the beeps occur. 3.  How many beeps are you hearing? Hardware can go at the craziest times, leaving one very confused.  If you have a dedicated graphics card, it could be the card or the socket (less likely) is faulty.  It could be a bad stick of RAM.  It could also be that the iTunes program may somehow be interfering with the functionality of a part.  Information will help.

If you have the ports, the cables and the screens, you might want to connect to an external screen to SEE if it's just a matter of selecting the right output. If you choose this option, you may have to close/open the laptop lid to get Windows 10 to recognize.

Hello all, I was letting someone use my computer and now I'm having all sorts of issues. I have started several threads about my issues, but I will reiterate them for the purpose of getting help. First, I installed ESET Security 6 then problems popped up. The usage of my RAM is way too high. I have 8gb in my laptop and the usage ranges from 24% to over 50% and no programs are open. Obviously I have processes running but I don't know which ones I can shut down. Then my Office 13 shortcut folder disappeared. I cannot find the shortcuts anymore and have to open word by opening an existing document and start a new one from there. Then my computer began freezing and my burning software quit working. I had to turn my laptop off, restart it, and then start windows normally. So I got some advice to install Malwarebytes and run a scan in safe mode with networking. Malwarebytes detected seven malicious entities all of which were variations of C:\ProgramData\InstallMate{number sequence}. All were removed and I restarted my laptop to initiate the removal. Once I did that the welcome screen ran for way longer than it usually does and then it changed to a black screen with my mouse present. I can use the computer in all variations of safe mode but that's it. I do not have a windows OS disk to reinstall or repair whatever damage has been done. I do not have a restore point for some reason, that disappeared, and all I want is my computer back to before I lent it out. Thanks ... Read more

After this my mouse would freeze on the screen, and now my screen will randomly go all black and I will have to restart me system. IF I am lucky, my computer will restart. However, most of the time immediately upon pressing the button to turn my system back on, it will cut back off before reaching any bootup screens at all. In addition, if my system does act like it wants to boot, it will freeze on the Windows startup where the green ticks go across teh screen. It's all a matter of chance if I can make it to my desktop and then I pray nothing freezes. I was initially in the malware forum for a long while because I had a Google redirect issue on top of everything (which is also notablly the first time I began seeing any of these issues). I cannot say if that is resolved or not, but I haven't noticed any redirects lately (I haven't been browsing much. I've been more focused on my system freezing and not letting me restart.) Anywho, I appreciate the help and I will post back as fast as I can to any responses I receive. Just bare with me as I never know how my system will act.

When I browse locally I see my dumps, but when I browse using the upload feature, the box is empty. Should I rename the dumps as .txt files and upload that way?

Thanks again. I'm a mess.

Hi,

Can you boot up into the options menu

when you reboot, tap F8 repeatedly until the option menu shows up:

Arrow up to "Last Known Good Configuration" hit enter, see if you can reboot normally.

If you cannot reboot normally, boot back into the option menu again and this time arrow up to "safe mode with networking"
see if you can download and run the following programs

(if you have no internet access - download them to another computer and transfer to the infected PC via USB stick)

Please download DDS from either of these links

and save it to your desktop.

Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
Save both reports to your desktop.

Probably sounds like a stupid question but have you shut down your PC and rebooted ? If not,.. give it a try.

So my sister pressed 'log off' and the computer restarted, and said that there was a 'System recovered from a serious error' message, which she then checked out and it said something about a blue screen appearing on startup, and that MS couldn't find any explanation. The problem is she didn't make a note of exactly what it said, but I'm guessing it means I've been hacked.

Is there anything I can really do about this without the correct information as to the nature of the problem?

Hi, about 2 weeks ago my computer starting freezing. I opened a new tab in Chrome or copied (Ctrl-C) something and it froze. I did some research and decided to uninstall Bitdefender and install MSE. That did not help. Now I cannot even login anymore. It just goes to the login screen and freezes. I see my username and the cursor blinks in the password field and that's it. Then when I shut it down (by pushing the button on the desktop) I get the blue screen. Luckily I can still remote desktop to it.

I have downloaded and ran dm log collector.exe and I have attached the ZIP file to this thread.

I'm hoping someone could help me.

Also, Please open a elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

Also, please open an elevated command prompt, as described above, and in the box type diskpart and press enter. Wait for the window to reply diskpart, then type list disk and press enter. Please post a screenshot of the results. It should look similar to this

I am in Safe Mode typing this. My computer was fine when I went to sleep and I woke up and there was a blue error screen that said my computer was shutdown to prevent further damage. It said it may be related to new hardware or software, but I have not added anything recently. The only thing that I have been noticing is that I have an excellent wireless internet connection according to the icon in the bottom right of my screen, yet when I try to go online or check my email sometimes it says I am not connected or I get a "page cannot be displayed" notice on the internet. If I close the browser and reopen it that usually works. I am really confused as to what the problem could be. I ran my avast antivirus and malwarebytes just the other day and scans came back clean. Okay... so my computer froze up this evening, nearly giving me a heart attack, because the last time this happened I had to replace my motherboard. Luckily everything seems to be in working order right now. I might have had too many things open, but I'm not sure if that was it or not.

I've done a virus scan, and nothing came up. So that's not it at least. There was no blue screen of death when it happened. I'm just hoping to avoid it happening again... Does anyone know what could have caused this? Is there anyway to be sure?

ETA: I think it's firefox. Now I can't get firefox to start or anything... It crashed again.

This morning my computer froze, so I turned the computer off and turned it back on again. When I got to the login screen I logged in and it had a black screen for a little while and I could move the mouse around. After about a minute it gives me a blue screen and restarts. When I tried to go into safe mode the computer froze. I can access task manager in the minute before it crashes, so I tried ending explorer.exe and re run it. Did not work.

Edit: It also occasionally can't find the HDD to boot from. It happens on an off.

This is the computer I use:

And maybe some suggestions on a cheap HDD with a warranty. I'm looking for 1TB or more.

I don't know if the failure was just because the hard drive was old or if it was a virus. I was searching for free books for a class that I had and went onto some sketchy websites, but I did spyware and virus scans afterwards and they came up clean. I did install anti-spyware just yesterday as well, so I don't know if it deleted something important or not.

Today, I was browsing the internet, while watching a stream of MLG. While suddenly my comp screen shows weird glitchy lines and the sound freezes, i end up turning off my computer and restarting it, but the glitchy screen still shows and wont startup to login screen. I was able to startup into safe mode (still with the weird glitch on screen) but the restoring and doing startup repair seems to not have fixed the problem. Anyone care to try to diagnose what is going on. Heres some pictures of what is going on my screen:
http://min.us/mbpiIFAGTs

edit 1: I forgot to add, i also cleared CMOS and reattached my video card and memory sticks which had didnt solve anything

A:My computer screen froze with a weird glitch, now wont startup.

the pictures in the album might indicate a overheating problem or a physically damage video card
In Safe Mode:

Go to Device Manager Right Click My Computer and select Manage select device manager do you see any (X) or "!" Under the Display component

Also the default VGA configurations has little lines that could also a physical defect of your card but I cant conclude that yet.

Did Start up Repair reported anything

After the crash
1) Restarted computer
2) Distorted pixels (RGB) all over the place
3) Top header, in green/ black pixels typing "Recovery Windows Error" (stays for 15seconds or so)
4) Black screen for 15seconds or so
5) Launches Startup Repair

I have tried removing RAM to see if any of them are faulty, did not work.
Startup repair prompted me with a system recovery. I press yes, nothing pops up.
Startup repair has been fully completed. Restarted my computer, same errors and loads startup repair again.
Before entering startup repair, I clicked F8, hoping I can go to safe mode, but instead it displays a black screen until i restarted the computer.
Unfortunately, I am not certain I can provide full details of my hardware pieces since I cant even boot to the safe mode.. But I am willing to try and find out some how if it is required.

Thank you for your time and I appreciate all the help I can muster.

Last time this happened somebody told me that I might have had bad SATA cables. This time it happened again. I also want to bring attention to a thread I made on Malwarebytes.

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/inde...click-fix-now/

I don't know if the problems are related. I scanned my PC with Webroot Anywhere and MBAM and nothing turned up.

My thoughts are it's a bad drive because it has all of the symptoms of a bad drive. However my C drive is an SSD and AFAIK SSDs are way more stable than HDDs. But I do have 2 HDDs I use as data drives so can a bad data drive also cause this stability issue? A few months ago I turned on my PC and it didn't see my F drive which is an HDD and my main data drive. I had to restart for it to detect it. Acronis drive monitor showed some issues with it but I haven't had those issues pop up and it's been over a month.

Also I leave my PC on and I have it run a scheduled task to shut down at 1:00 AM and I made it so it will do that regardless of if a program is running and this morning it was still on with MSI afterburner giving me a message about C: being full and I had to do a hard restart.

Hi.

Can you uninstall Acronis, at least as a test basis?

Also, the OCZ one seems to be the primary HDD .... make it sure that it is running with the latest firmware.

First of all let me say I have Windows XP SP2. I know SP3 is out, but last time I downloaded it for some reason my modems software wasn't compatible or something along those lines and I was told to uninstall SP3 until that issue was fixed.

I went through all of the step listed before this and since this HD is newish there wasn't anything on it that I could spot that shouldn't be here.

The other morning I turned on my computer and the internet
wasn't working. I restarted the computer, and the internet worked
for about 3 minutes, I unplugged dsl modem to reset it, restarted
computer, internet worked for 2-3 minutes again then stopped working.

I was puzzled so I tried my laptop (main computer has DSL + wireless router so laptop connects wireless) and internet ran fine on that.

I went to restart my computer again and this time when I tried to boot into windows it was a black screen. I pushed the restart button on my computer case, went into safe mode, ran AVG Free Virus scan, and no problems showed up. I tried a few more times to boot into windows normally but every time it only would show a black screen. I hit F8 while restarting to get to the menu, then I tried the "reboot into last working configuration" option and that didn't work either.

Next time during reboot I hit f8 to bring up the menu to boot into safe mode, and I saw an option (can't remember what it was off of the top of my head and I forgot to write it down). Something... Read more
