Q: SURT corruption issues

I just ran CheckSur Scan and there are some problems that I can't fix alone.
You'll find enclosed the log file
Thanks in advance for your help !

Preferred Solution: SURT corruption issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I believe I've a corrupt file system/registry. The windows explorer hangs a lot. Accessing files in drives takes too long. Ran Malwarebytes, NOD32 online scanner. It's all clean. SFC doesn't run.

So, I've run SFCfix.exe & attached the generated SFCfix.txt. I've also attached CBS.zip. Please help.

I've got a system that was acting weird on, running slow, etc. I did an repair install of Windows 7 SP1 over the existing OS and can't get all of the Windows updates to roll.

I attempted to do SFC /SCANNOW and it reports no integrity violations.

KB947821 was run overnight and this evening, I found the computer still running it with the "Searching for updates" prompt.

CBS folder is attached.

I've previously posted for help under "Performance & Maintenance". I thought it would be more appropriate to ask for help here.

I believe I've a corrupt file system/registry. The windows explorer hangs a lot. I've a hard time accessing files on the hard drive. Ran Malwarebytes, NOD32 online scanner. It's all clean. SFC doesn't run.

So, I've run SFCfix.exe & attached the most recent version of SFCfix.txt & CBS.zip.

I've attempted some repairs by running Windows Update Readiness tool, looking at CHECKSUR.log, by downloading the individual updates mentioned in the log, placing them in C:\windows\temp\checksur\packages folder, and running WURT again & the summary of checksur.log reads.

I am running Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate with 16 processors (4 Quad i7 cores), 128GB of RAM on 2TB of SSD drives. and I have a range of issues. The most prevalent is that the computer will completely freeze while typing into any application (Word, PowerPoint, Firefox, VS, etc... - even Notepad) and all of the screens will whiteout as if something is processing. The active application will show a processing icon and then, within 15-30 seconds the system unfreezes. This happens every 10 minutes or so and will happen even if nothing is running outside of the restricted set of services I allow.

The second symptom is that processes will not die when I close them. The GUI goes away but the processes still exist in Task Manager and nothing - not Task Manager, Process Explorer or Process Hacker 2 (all running in Admin Mode) can stop the processing. If I run too long and open and close applications, I will have each closed version running in tandem. Restarting usually works but sometimes I am forced to hard reset the system to get it to log off.

I have run File System Checker (sfc /scannow) about 25 times in a row, rebooting between each run, and the last scan still states that it found corrupted files and corrected them.
When I looked in the event log, I found a large number of VSS write errors but I followed the steps detailed here - Error message when you run the "vssadmin list writers" command on a Windows Server 2003-based computer: "... Read more

With a computer like that, I'd say backup your data and upgrade to Windows 8.1 X64 and get off of XP.

How much ram do you actually have? You said 128GB which I find hard to believe and your specs say Memory 8 – 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5400 64Mx8 ECC FB-DIMM Memory which would be 16GB.

I have recently installed a copy of Windows 7 home premium 32 bit and it has been nothing but a headache since I got it.

The biggest issue that is absolutely killing my computer has to do with file downloads. When I download a program, installer, zip file, etc, the file gets corrupted at some point during the transfer making it unusable. I do not believe this is a problem with my network, as I have a linux computer and my roommate has a Windows 7 computer as well, and neither have this problem. I never once had this issue while I was running Windows XP. Here are the installers that either fail to launch, or give me a file corrupted error message when I try to install them: gmax, pidgin, openoffice 3.1, Microsoft Expression studio, Adoble Flash player 10, Mozilla Firefox, Steam and more.

I have connected my computer directly to my modem and I am still experiencing these issues. Can anyone provide any kind of insight to what would cause this and what could fix it?

A:File Corruption issues

Antivirus and/or firewall. Completely uninstall and do not just disable. Test.

Hi everyone,

I am very new to building computers. I have built my first one, downloaded windows 7 as the OS (Using CAD programmes so need this as windows 10 doesn't support all of those that I need to use). I have however, had some serious issues using the windows update tool.

I have used SFC scan now, this has thrown up that there are corrupt files. Found a great piece of software, called scanfix now, used this and has shown me the issues, see listed below:

1st problem: WMI corruption
I am trying to configure my wireless network connection properties, but when I click on the advanced tab to view them I cannot view them. All that appears is ,"Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use System Restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System Restore is located in the System Tools folder in Accessories." The odd part is that I can still connect to my wireless network. I completed the system restore and the problems remains. I also attempted to update to SP2 which leads to the second problem...

2nd problem: Windows Update issues
I want to update my OS to SP2. I first attempted to use automatic update. Once I am prompted to install SP2 i follow the instructions. The update always starts fine but then about 60% of the way it completely halts. No matter how long I leave the pc on to complete its process it will not budge from that point. I attempted to download the file and manually install and I had the exact same issue.

Now I don't know what else to do. Please help

I have run many tests on my ssd:

Samsung Magician says drive is healthy.
SeaTools 'long test' says 100% pass
memtest on my RAM passes all tests

sfc (when getting errors but windows still bootable) says 100% ok
Malwarebytes (when getting errors but windows still bootable) nothing found
windows defender (when getting errors but windows still bootable) nothing found
Any ideas as to what may be causing corruption of system files on my hard drive?

Bad RAM? (but it passed memtest test )

hey folks im new to this forum so go easy on me!

i built my first pc about 5 months ago because my laptop of 4 years goosed on me while ordering dominos pizza (dammit!!) - iv done a good job everything works swimmingly except i salvaged the hard drive from the laptop and hooked it up to my new pc. (just so i could store media so as not to clog up my new hard drive) i formatted the old hard drive because it had a version of windows xp on it. but i think it's facked haha. everytime i format it i can use it till i shut down then when i restart i get hassled by chkdsk whether i let it run or not i get a corrupt hard drive when i restart. Now it wont format, i tried deleting it and re volume-ing it via disk management but that only works till shut down...

any ideas? iv got it hooked up via 6gb cable/port on the mobo, altho its only a 3gb hdd could that be an issue?

Anyhow, as for your current problem.
Do you have any optional updates currently in windows update?
Now would be a good excuse to apply those.
Is this a pc you built or something with a make/model on it?

Had a pc in for a friend which has had a New motherboard, Has an Intel P4 Chip in out of an old pc with a dead mobo, RAM from the same pc, 2 "new to him" CD drives and the graphics card from the old pc

So first off i put him in a 160GB IDE hard drive which we had lying around, i should point out here that it hadnt been marked an so could possibly have come out of another pc as faulty

Started trying to install windows and it was getting copying file errors, got it installed and installing other software was very slow, then it did a windows update which kept failing to install and on reboot vista kept saying the system config was corrupt run repair windows, each time it did a registry roll back and it came back up - when i checked the error log it gave bad disk error.

Then tried to ghost the hard drive but even norton ghost couldnt read from the hard drive

So then took a 60GB IDE from our old sever which had worked fine for a few years, installed windows, office, all updates etc without a problem - all looking great gave the guy his pc back and his mouse isnt detected straight away so he hits the reset button on the front of the pc - once windows boots up again it then pops up saying the hard drive has a critical error and to backup and replace hard drive immediately

So...... The pc did go home in his car, he says he didnt knowingly knock it or anything but theres a possibility its had a knock, It started playing up straight after a hard reset.... so it could be ... Read more

Hi. I'm running Windows 7 and I decided to partition the hard drive to run Kubuntu (Computer Management->Disk Management->Shrink Volume). Every time I try, it tells me it can't because the volume may be corrupted and to run chkdsk and try again. So I open command prompt and it tells me the drive's in use and that I should schedule a disk check for startup. I do, reboot, no disk check.
Also, I can't change any boot settings in msconfig, disk defrag won't start, easybcd gives me errors and won't start. So I'm thinking something is wrong with my booting and my partition. I cannot system restore either, as it says the drive is corrupted. Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but about 1 in every 10 boots wont't load the majority of my drivers.
Is there any way to fix this? Thanks
By the way, I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit which I downloaded (legally), so I cannot get to the command prompt by booting from the CD.

When I have gone through all the usual steps to repair these errors, like chkdsk, sfc, create new user, reinstall windows apps and manually installing updates, stop/starting backup and shadow copy services, the issue has not been resolved and I have had to either reset my PC, reinstall windows or recover from a system image, many times.

Note with my most recent failures (the following occured all within one day), including start menu not popping up, mail and edge not opening, windows apps icons missing from taskbar, backup no working, and corrupt/unreadable /user/desktop location (which made me write this post/request for help), sfc verification was successful with no errors being found (confusing).

I have multipul computers that are now infected with a trojan/worm. Trend calls it worm_autorun.pa and avg calls it psw.generic5.pra. It resides in the files sysinfo.dll in the system32 folder, and in the file sysinfo2.dll in the root of ALL drives. It will replicates itself onto any external device that is plugged into the machine instantly. Some symptoms are having strange text replace the Open command when you right click on a drive letter, and corrupting any limited user accounts (which is how we found the problem in the first place). So far no AV I've tried has been able to get rid of it. I have one machine that I think I have cleaned, but now I can not access the drives with double clicking. A few days ago I was trying to upgrade my .NET framework to play a game and noticed the download hangs and failed with the error code 0xc8000247.

Upon numerous online research and supposed fixes, I could not get my system to download the file correctly. So, I went to my Windows Update to see if I was behind on any updates that might prevent an update. Windows Update and Defender are unable to activate and are stuck in a perpetual state of inactivity. More troubleshooting, no answers.

Upon running chkdsk and sfc, I located corrupt files that were unable to be fixed by the system along with the CBS log report of which makes no sense to me.

I know the obvious answer is "just reformat your drives", but it's not that simple unfortunately. Since I bought my laptop from MSI almost 5 years ago, every time I have used one of the 4 sets of reformat discs they have sent me or the recovery option in the BootMgr, I received a reagentc.exe false which leaves me with a computer lacking an OS. Wish they would have given my the Windows 7 Disc for a fresh install.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like my only option here would be manually locate the corrupt files and replace them with fresh installs. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:File Corruption Causing Issues With Reformatting, .NET Framework, etc.

The factory preinstall is the worst install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. Most tech enthusiasts won't run such an install but choose instead to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.
Everything needed is in the blue link including the latest official installer for your licensed version and tool to burn to DVD or flash stick.
Sometimes the inferior Factory Recover disks can be made to run by first wiping the HD from the Win7 DVD's Command Line with Diskpart Clean Command .

But why run the worst install one can have when you can have the very best, and enjoy Win7's perfect performance on that PC for the first time?!

Summary: Either my overheating HP pavilion dv 9000 laptop or MS security essentials (or something else) is causing my sound card driver (and partially the touch pad too) to fail, and to arbitrarily corrupt updates of software.

The long story:

I have an hp laptop that my friend just gave to me (pavilion dv9000 w/amd turion 64 x2 mobile tl-60, 3gigs of ddr2 [email protected] mhz, 128mb on an nvidia nforce 630m card, and 157gig hdd) which has a significant overheating problem (or perhaps i'm doing something wrong...?), and (possibly the cause of) a host of other issues. For example, if I leave the laptop on my computer desk for an hour (while it's downloading a large file) it will overheat; the cpu will get to a toasty 150 degrees (fahrenheit, of course), the graphics card to about 140-150, and the hdd to 120-125. I've tried everything from installing Granola (visit grano.la; it's a program that uses the DVFS API to reduce processor speed; it slowed down the overall heating process, but it still heated up to the same temp after 2 hours) to holding up a large fan to the bottom of the laptop, which gets the temp down (until I turn the fan off, or put the laptop down so I can actually use it), to disabling all aero effects (which helped nothing).

However, the problems go on. After installing windows 7 (this laptop came with vista, which worked fine, but had my friends financial data, personal data, etc. and i didn't have a vista cd) I've also had a number of software issues. After reinsta... Read more

A:hp laptop causes shutdowns, driver+corruption issues on new win7

I have an HP dv9000. My wireless adapter on my computer died a few months ago, and I'm pretty sure it was the overheating. Easiest and cheap solution, buy a computer fan. A bit pricey, but its cheaper than buy a new driver or replacing hardware that just cant take the heat. Thankfully I was still on warranty do Bestbuy fixed it. But I highly recommend getting a computer fan.

Today, I turned on my laptop for the first time since the May 11 update. It completed running the update and then it froze. It was completely unresponsive, the mouse would not move, nothing was happening.

I hit ctl+alt+del to bring up the Task Manager, but that failed and a message came up telling me to hit escape and do a hard boot of the laptop.

I did that, and after sitting on the initial windows screen (the black one) a message came up to run chkdsk. That was over an hour ago. It is now at about 10% and is showing perhaps now a hundred corrupted files.

Should I allow chkdsk to keep running or is it possibly doing more damage than good? Also, has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I haven't.

I'd appreciate a timely response only due to the possible destruction of my hard drive that seems to be going on right now.

Thanks in advance.

You can - but I'd advise copying it to the desktop and running that copy, unless it's USB3, as it's a very large file.

Now its the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool that keeps coming up, and as soon as I install it
the updt icon immediately pops up saying updates are ready for your computer (over & over)?

I tried to download the Win7 32-bit SURT tool from your forum link, but it says it's Not available?

A:Can't download SURT tool to fix...?

The most likely reason for the MSRT to repeat is that it crashed at some point.
The most likely reason for that, is that the machine is infected.
Try this link for the CheckSUR tool...

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

(direct link - 32-bit Windows 7CheckSUR)

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Quarantine everything it finds

I'm trying to follow the posting guidelines before I post my Windows update problem but don't know which SURT file to download, could someone please help?

My computer properties are :

Windows 7 Home Premium
Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
64-bit Operating System

(I have not been able to succesfully download/install Service Pack 1, which is the problem I will eventually ask about, and every option I see for SURT has an SP, which I don't have at all.)

ETA - Sorry guys, just saw I wasn't reading things properly.

A:which SURT file should I download?

For the SURT you need to d/l this file: x64-based (64-bit) versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7

The pc is definitely backleveled since I had to restore. It has all updates up to 7/12. While I have had any problems with updates (so far) I thought that it might be wise to install the SURT. My only concern is whether that would create problems with updates since I am so far behind.

(I could not find an answer for this question which may well be a dumb question.)

A:SURT WIN7 64bit

It only corrects any problems it finds - it doesn't install anything new.

Unless you're seeing problems with updating or the like, then there should be no need to run the tool.

A:Can't check for updates, SURT fails.

You're probably also getting a 'non-genuine' error??

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

The SURT has not fixed the problem; the same 4 updates fail as before i.e. :
- Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB982726) 32-Bit Edition,
- Security Update for Microsoft Outlook 2010 (KB2837597) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2589352) 32-Bit Edition
- Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2597087) 32-Bit Edition

Log files don't mean a lot to me. But here goes for anyone who can interpret. Attached are the simple log files in plain and CBS zips after the SURT run - before and after failed software update

IE11 and YouTube: Someone asked for a better description of the problem. Best done with an example: If I open YouTube and attempt to type a search string e.g. Joe Bloggs, it locks up with a YouTube failing to respond pop-up at the bottom. On the other hand, if I type a search string into Google e.g. Joe Bloggs on YouTube, then I can click any of the links and YouTube runs perfectly, and more to the point, will accept any new search string.

In the mean time, I'll go look for updates after next Patch Tues/Wed so I can shut my machines down sensibly

A:Wrap up to the SURT suggestion (and IE11)

SURT found nothing wrong - and the CBS logs contain no useful data.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

good evening, I have tried following your instructions to post information regarding the error, but surt fails to execute the hotfix.
For the past month, I kept getting disconnected from my wifi, it would stop working, and could not run the troubleshooter either.
I ran windows updater, it did update some files, but failed with 3 having to do with microsoft net framework.
I play FSX and P3D, today I tried upgrading my P3D to a new version and it failed as well, never happened before.
since I could not run surt, can you please guide me thru what steps I can take, this is driving me crazy and those games are what keeps my brain distracted from thinking about a bladder tumor.
I am enclosing the error logs as well.

A:where can I find SURT tool to kick w7 updates

I don't know about SURT but the following will resolve the Windows update problem.

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

Looking down this list of current update failures,

one might be excused for thinking Microsoft has a serious problem which started a couple of days back.

I have spent the last two days trying to re- install failed up dates.

About twelve in all and only relative to two error codes (800F08260) for most of them, then an odd

two with (80070490). First I tried finding a restore point prior to everything going wrong. Windows was

less than appreciative of that and the restore failed. I tried updating single updates manually but no go,

they still failed. Two days back I put in new antivirus and firewall and I wondered if that was the problem,

so I disabled and went back to Defender and Windows firewall. Nope, that made no difference.

So I logged on here, took note of "Windows update posting instructions"

and worked my way down to the SURT program. I attempted to install the version for Win 7 64 bit

and initially it looked good and was installing (9KB947821) (which I was surprised to see was a Hot Fix? )

when it hung. I left it for a while but it just was stuck there, so I killed it with task manager and

downloaded a new version then installed it. It also reached the same point then hung.

If I go look at the update history it shows a failure for (KB947821) but then a success!

I suppose I should think myself lucky but, what I would like to know is, If I instigate Windows Updates

now. will they all work? In other words, was that hot fix the thing needed to... Read more

A:Problem with SURT hanging when downloading (KB947821)

Please help me in solving a windows update failure. I have windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64.

The two windows updates that fail are
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
any Microsoft.NET framework both 4.5.2 (KB2901983) and 4.6.1 (KB3102433)

I found a similar thread and followed the steps in it, but no joy.
Performed SFC /scannow, but the WRP did not find any integrity violations. I tried to run the SURT tool (same tool as KB947821) by a manual download and run but it reports the "hotfix failed to install". So I don't have a SURT tool log to submit.

What's the next step?

I'm having a weird problem for the past few days. On my laptop, I can surf to most websites, but can't sign into hotmail and yahoo mail ... I get a 'Page cannot be displayed' error after I enter my username and password.

I've also have experienced a similar problem logging onto eBay, mapquest etc … and I had the same problem right now while posting this message! My laptop gave a ‘page cannot be displayed’ error when I clicked on ‘preview post’ … so I had to post this from my desktop.

This problem has been haunting me for several days on just these few websites, so its not a case of a server being temporarily down.

The laptop has WinXP, and the browser is IE ver
The desktop has Win98, and the broswer is IE ver 6.0.2800.1106

I had uninstalled JRE from my laptop earlier this week; and I wondered whether that was causing this problem. But the problem persists even after I reinstalled 'Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02'.

A:Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

Since no one has offered any advice, I just kept truckin'. I downloaded and I ran the SURT package. I have been at all of this since 11 this morning and succeeded in downloading 148 windows security updates. I was told after reinstalling sp1 there would be around 200 but the windows update menu indicated that 68 were "recommended" not important. That would bring the number to 196. I think I will just not worry about those 68 as they are not "important". Hope I am back in safe territory.

Dear Sevenforums,

I just installed a new HDD by WD into a HP DV7T (2008), everything has been going well up until I tried to Update Windows. I did not retain anything from the previous installation as the previous hard drive up and quit on me!

I activated windows and had it confirmed as genuine.

I followed the instructions posted on another page and tried to install SURT and got an error: 0xc8000247.

I was hoping for some suggestions, Direct X , Java, MSE and Mechwarrior Online wouldn't install.

Perhaps a driver issue?

Have a great day all!

Hi all-

This is my first post so hopefully I'm doing it correctly.

I've been having issues with my Windows update service not checking for updates since it says the service isn't running. I have tried various other fixes that I've seen in other threads such as running Malwarebyte and FSS. When running those tools, no issues were found.

I downloaded SURT, and while the installation will initialize, it stops and gives me a 0xc8000247 error.

I ran sfc /scannow and have attached the log file below.

I have also enclosed the CBS logs as requested.

I am running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and have SP1 installed. Please advise if there is any additional information that you need. If it matters, the computer in question is an HP Pavilion DV8.

Thank you,

How's that for a Topic?

I first noticed the problem while trying to install QuickBooks.

Hello, I recently replaced a defective HDD in my laptop with a new WD Black 750G HDD, re-installed my Windows 7 image using my recovery DVDs, but can't seem to update Windows OR start Windows Defender (error 0x8e5e0247). I followed the steps from "Windows Update Posting Instructions" and am listing the results:-

1. System Update Readiness Tool installation resulted in error:0xc8000247.

2. Also performed SFC Scan three separate times and received the same "WRP found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." (see attached CBS)

When I manually try to install updates, I get "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. Restart your computer." But if look in local services (Task Manager) Windows Update is started & running.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
PS: There were some programs included in the restore, Norton AV being one of them. I uninstalled it, then downloaded the Norton Removal Tool & ran that as well. I'm mentioning this because it was recommended several times in other threads regarding this same error.
