Vista 64bit SP1 Problem - Error Code: 0x80073712

Q: Vista 64bit SP1 Problem - Error Code: 0x80073712

Tried installing the Service Pack and I get the following:

An internal error occurred while installing the service pack.

Error code: 0x80073712.
See Search Microsoft.com for details.

But when I try that URL I get a Microsoft Search Page with nothing else. Any ideas? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Vista 64bit SP1 Problem - Error Code: 0x80073712

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, I have seen it before. It is not exactly uncommon. In all previous cases that I have dealt with, it has always been in error. Looking over the CBS.log file showed that SFC did in fact scan very few, or no, files. Often the CBS.log actually showed an error which SFC did not graphically report. In my experience, there are certain errors which SFC cannot recover from. In these cases, it stops part way with a 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation' error message. When it finishes too fast, despite claiming success, it often has had one of these fatal errors anyway, if I remember correctly.

Now, I could take the CBS.log, and see what seems to be going on, but if you ask me, it isn't worth it unless you have a problem. If your computer has a problem, which is why you ran SFC, then I shall take a look, but if all seems well, then you risk more by fiddling.

A:Error code 0x80073712

Hello Paul!

Thanks for letting me know about that error

Error code 0x80073712 maps to ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT. This error is one of the few which can cause SFC to fail. These two are definitely linked.

As you have seen, SFC is not robust enough to deal with corruptions when its store copy is also corrupt. It can deal with problems when it has a clean store, but a corruption elsewhere, but when its store is damaged, it fails.

Therefore, we need a second tool downloaded from the internet with its own store built into the download to identify problems in the store. I also intend to take a copy of the CBS.log, just to diagnose what exactly is corrupted, how badly is is corrupted, how to fix it if it is possible to fix, or whether it does not actually need to be fixed (I doubt this scenario). At the moment, I am just diagnosing what is wrong, and what needs to be done.

Please download this independant tool (the System Update Readiness Tool) from here: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 and install it.

Once it has installed, please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder (the whole folder, please) to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, create a new thread in this forum: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ (It is better to keep something like this in its own thread, and leave this thread for simple on... Thanks SlayerU2. I couldn't create a restore point either, and got the same error code.

I found 4. "generic volumes" after expanding "storage volume shadow copies", and uninstalled them all as suggested.

I then restarted and went to create a System Restore Point, and it worked as you said it did for you.

I then back into Device Manager and checked to see if I had any "generic volumes". I did but instead of 4 I now have 8. Perhaps I should have had 8 to begin with !!

Never mind all now seems to be O.K., so once again thanks very much

You might want to try the troubleshooter listed here FIRST

You should be able to download and run System Update Readiness SP1 or not. It might complain about missing SP1 software and it might actually update some things for you. I don't think it will cause any additional problems.

Does it matter how you try the update? Winupdate or download and update?

Good luck.

I have a problem, which i have been discussing in another section of the forums ( http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic94876.html ), but have been advised to post here in hopes of finding someone with the same or similar problem/solution.
First I will describe the problem, then i will summarize my attempts at a remedy.
The Problem.
I have the following components, and they are not meshing well together.
-AMD Phenom II x4 2.8GHz 920 CPU
-Biostar TA790GX A+ MoBo
-4x2GB G.Skill DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
-1TB Hitachi SATA2
After installing a fresh copy of Vista Home Premium, Updating the Bios, and installing all the most current drivers, I was getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. These BSOD's have occurred while the pc is idle(without a user), while I am using web browsers, running games, getting my vista score, etc.
I see no pattern.
Remedy Attempts
In order to remedy the situation, in the following order, I uninstalled the ATI Drivers, Realtec and NIC drivers. Used a cleaner in safe mode and reinstalled the most current drivers again from ATI and Realtek. This seemed to help, because the BSOD trailed off in their prevalence. But they were still there.
I reinstalled the Chipset drivers from Biostar's website, and the BSOD were occuring only once every 10-15 hours.
Lastly, I installed the NIC and Audio drivers from Biostar, and the BSOD's have multiplied in their occurrence.

Good Evening,

I wondered if someone could advise me - I am having problems installing Windows Vista SP2 (32bit) on my laptop.

The laptop was given to me by a friend as they no longer needed it, I did a factory restore and understandably once it was connected to the internet several updates were required.

Eventually I received notification that the SP2 update was required. I used Windows Update and after downloading it I got the message to say it had failed with an Error Code 8007000D. I know that several Vista users have had this same error and after Googling it to death I am now stuck with SP1.

I have disabled my Comodo Firewall, AVAST Antivirus and downloaded the standalone SP2 installer but it still gave me the error.

I have also run the System Update Readiness Tool but after checking the respective log files they show no errors.

Like others I have also tried installing SP2 in Safe Mode, every method I choose seems to give me the same error message. I have re-downloaded the standalone installer and that didn't work, plus I have deleted all items in the download and event cache folders in Software Distribution and used Windows Update to install it again, that didn't work either.

Right now I am at my wits end and cannot install SP2.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I could try?

Many thanks in advance

Generally, these errors can occur if the system files are corrupted. Lets try SFC from command prompt first. see if you have registry errors that can be repaired. Use this, one user in this forum recommends running the SFC scannow 3 times, then use the how to repair the missing/corrupt registry entries. Give this a shot and post back . Please open an elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command,

post the results.
Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

This is my first post at the sevenforums.com even though I have been a lurker for several years.

I upgraded my PC and installed Win 7 64bit professional (earlier was using 32 bit) and proceeded with the automatic updates. I ran into occasional errors from time to time but mostly they were due to connectivity issues (undersea cable cut...duh!) but those were resolved on repeated attempts

Now, it seems I am stuck on the Windows 7 SP 1 update for x64-based systems. I have tried innumerable times to get it installed, but half way during the installation, it would stop and throw me this error - Code 800F0818

I read some old threads in this forum and ran the SFC Scan and it came out clean. My PC also has just been formatted and adequately secured by Avast and MBAM and now I am in the process of downloading the System Update Readiness Tool

Please advise on how to proceed from here on.
Thank you very much!

Hello, I got a BSOD when my computer was almost idle (only utorrent was running) with stop error code 0x000000F4.
Also at the blue screen it got stuck at the 2nd step (don't remember what it says) and as a result I don't have a minidump file.
My pc specs are:
Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Extreme
CPU: Intel i7 - 950 @ 3,00GHz
RAM: 3x2GB @ 1866MHz
Windows Drive: 60GB SSD (OCZ Agility)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Sp1 64bit
This has happened quite a few times during the 1 year I have this computer. The previous times the SSD I had (Corsair F60) stopped working. (2 SSDs dead)
The problem is that I cannot reproduce the problem so that we find out the cause. Is it something with the controller of the motherboard? What should I do?
Thank you for your time!

OK, I'm pretty *** right now!

I bought my laptop brand new in September with Vista preinstalled. I tried to update the system but I couldn't because apparently Microsoft *** up Vista so bad that they didn't even bother testing it properly before the release date to see if it works at all. As we all know, Microsoft is in a monopol market position so it can treat its customers in whatever *** way it wants to.

Ok, enough of the vent.

I spent 1 week tring to figure out how I can update Vista because I kept getting error 0x80073712 all the time. It turned out that the problem was that when Microsoft released Vista, some of the system files were corrupt, and that prevented me from updating. What's more, I was also informed that I could only resolve this issue by reinstalling Vista from CD which I did not have, because I got it preinstalled on my laptop! So, there is no way I can ever get any updates?!?? Naturally, the information that I found on the Microsoft support page was a piece of **.

(The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712")

Nevertheless, I still did a system scan, and it didn't produce any results, just as I expected.
After one week of struggling to find a way out of the ** microsoft kindly dumped on me, I found a tweak on another forum, which finally worked!! I had gone through like 10 different solutions bef... Read more

I am on day two of trying to troubleshoot my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit w/ SP1 Clean Install from OEM System Builder Version. This is my Dad's PC that I built in 2010 with the same version of Windows that I installed previously. I decided to Clean Install his PC because I needed the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB & WD5000AAKX-001CA0 Caviar Blue 500GB from his system and needed to downgrade his PC.

The Original System Specs along with all Downgrades Below:
Case: Cooler Master COSMOS 1000
CPU: Intel i7-930
CPU Cooler: Replaced Corsair H70 Watercooler w/ Corsair H80i Watercooler
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium
Memory: Reduced Memory from 12GB Patriot PGS36G1600ELK GSERIES 1600Mhz to 6GB of the same.
HDD/SSD: Replaced the above mentioned drives with a Samsung 250GB SP2504C
GPU: Replaced BFG GTX 285 OC w/ EVGA Geforce 8800GT
PSU: Replaced Corsair HX850W w/ XION XON-600F14R-201 600W

Before beginning, I used disk management to delete all partitions on the WD 500GB. After finishing the build I proceeded to create a USB Boot drive (diskpart) via the Windows CD & Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Next I used my PC and disk management to unallocate the Samsung 250GB, and the OCZ Vertex as well (I think this was my demise). I then connected the Samsung, a DVD Drive, and inserted the USB into Dad's PC.

On first start the system started and Posted fine. Changed IDE to ACHI and Switched Boot Priority to USB. Saved, restarted, and checked to be sure it worked. Proceeded to Windows... Read more

Yesterday MS released a bunch of updates and I have never had any issue installing before.

It gave me error code 80070057....so I downloaded MSI and ran on PC....same error.

I did some web surfing and not much out there on it.

I even found this link through another thread that had the error referenced and recalled on other machines in past that .NET Framework could be corrupted and cause issues. The KB does not seem to be associated but I tried the MSI FIXIT and also .NET repair steps.....no change....still fails.

Windows update for IE10 on Windows 7 64bit fails continuously with error code 9c59. I tried the stand alone updater with the same results. All other windows updates complete successfully, it's just IE10 that continually fails.

Don't know if this is related but I do have problems with IE8 (current browser). After a while, an open IE window will become non responsive and can't be closed out. I have to use task manager to close it down. I have sent off the reports to MS, but no solution has appeared.

I've attached the cbs file. Let me know what else I can do. Thanks.

A:Windows update for IE10 on win7 64bit fails with error code 9c59

There are no significant file errors in either SFC or CheckSUR logs.

In these cases, it has sometimes been a solution to uninstall IE9, reboot a couple of times, and then reinstall IE9 again, before installing IE10 successfully.
It's worth a try

Good afternoon! From what I've seen in a Whole Lot of Googling, this forum seems to have the most targeted, successful support for the kind of issue I'm seeing.

I've been running Win7 Home Premium for a few years, and every single Windows Update has run successfully (with a snag now and then) except SP1, which returns error 0x80073712 every time.

I've disabled SpyBot S&D and AVG Free, but MS Security Essentials is still running.

I ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64), which completed.
(And I discovered I've been attempting to resolve the issue with SURT since September 2012, v22!)

Ran SFC scan as Admin:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

Attempted update again.

New error code: 80070002. Followed WinHelp to stop Windows Update service, deleted temporary update files, restarted update service, checked again for updates.

Attempted update again. Found 1 critical (SP1) and 2 optional. Didn't note what they were.

Cancelled install during Win Live Essentials 2011 update. Restarted SP1-only update.

80073712 returned.

Re-collected CBS.zip from C:\Windows\Logs

(I tried to attach CBS.zip, but at ~30MB, it's well over the 8MB limit. Any particular logs you could use instead?

I've come across a Windows 7 Professional SP1 x86 system which attempts to install

KB3108664 daily, and fails daily with error 0x80073712. It has been doing this for weeks and weeks.

Please note: All other Windows updates both before and since are updating successfully. Only KB3108664 is failing.

What I have tried already:

sfc /scannow - cleanSystem Update Readiness ToolWindows 7 Update Troubleshooter - several times
All run successfully.

But KB3108664, and only KB3108664, continues to fail every time with error 0x80073712, both when run through Windows Update, and also when downloaded and installed manually.

I looked at LOGS\CheckSUR.log, and something is definitely wrong with this update. But I do not know how to interpret what I am looking at or what to do next.

If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

- Check For Updates always fails with the error code: 80073712
- sfc /scannow produces "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
- turn windows features on or off produces an empty window.
- system update readiness tool produces 1 error "csi unable to query store version"
- Installation of SP1 fails with: ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712)

Unless you have a System Restore point that's from before the problem started, then I'm afraid that your only options are either a repair install or a clean install.

error 0x80073712 (error_sys_component_store_corrupt)

The checksur.log shows several errors (cbs.zip)

sfc /scannow shows one error with wimgapi.dll (hashmismatch) which cannot repaired, because source file is also corrupted (sfcdetails.txt).

lossless repairing with the Win repair system isn't possible, because user-, program- and windows-folders are not in the same partition.

In other threads, I saw very profund and competent answers, so I hope someone can help me too!

Hey all, I have a lenovo tower running windows 7 home premium service pack 1, all seems to be working great except when I go to do updates, every update is installed except this one nagging one that fails repeatedly.

The Update is Security Update KB2847927 and the error code is 0x80073712

When the update didn't install I hit help that took me to this page
Windows Update error 0x80073712

I ran the System File Checker tool as administrator in cmd prompt sfc /scannow when it finished it said Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
I tried again to install the update but it failed.

The next step was to download and install the System Update Readiness tool, installed that, said finished after about 5 mins (read that it appears to hang but just let it go) and yeah it seemed to install but after that the update still won't install fails with same error code.

That's where the microsoft page stops in terms of what to check or do, so now I come to the group hoping to find some answers.

I read the page that showed the steps to reporting about an error and have attempted to attach my cbs.zip file but it keeps saying

I am supposed to be attaching the entire cbs folder saved as a zip then uploading that cbs.zip correct?

I am completely stumped by this problem. I will do my best to explain it and see what you fine folks can do.

I had an older bluetooth dongle, off-brand model, 2010-2011 year, that I installed on my new desktop computer. It worked, but sound quality on my Sony Dr-BT101 headset wasn't great. It worked well with my bluetooth-enabled phones and tablets, so I suspected the dongle. I bought a CSR8510 dongle, which came with a CSR Cambridge Radio Harmony software stack. I installed the software, and turned on the headset, paired it, but no sound came out of the headset. I went to Sound, saw no entries. Went to device managers and saw the parts in yellow. I tried to update the driver but all I got was Code 18 error and this weird message in the picture. I clicked on properties and saw this message.

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

I am stumped. I've tried uninstalling, re-installing, installing other Bluetooth drivers, waving a magic wand, none of it has worked. I'm thinking it's a problem with the Registry, but I am not sure how to proceed.

Any ideas?

A:Bizarre Bluetooth driver problem (Code 18 and Code 28 error)

Hello guys, I've got quite a weird problem I have never come across before and would like some help as I am stuck on what to do.

I recently installed Windows Vista 64Bit on my PC. It was acting strange and randomly restarting when it felt like it, displaying the error on my monitor "No Signal".

Anyway, it also didn't complete a few windows updates and wouldn't allow me to autoplay disks from my CD-ROM drive, although before hand it did, and I managed to install my Mobo, graphics and sound drivers. It then showed up a error saying "D:\ Is not accessible".

When I restarted my PC and it tried to apply the windows updates, it didn't work and rebooted my system to reverse the changes.

I went to work last night and left my computer on downloading a few programs that I had before on my system. However, when I got back from work my PC was turned off and decided it didn't want to boot at all, here are a list of what happens:

- LED's flash for a split second
- CPU, PSU, Fans and Graphics card spins for split second
- A few lights on my Mobo flash for split second
- This happens around every 3 or so seconds
- Even when I turn the power of at the back of my computer (the switch next to your PSU lead) it still does this one more time
- System fails to boot even without pressing my "ON" button

I'm sorry if all my information isn't accurate, if their is anyone that knows how to solve this issue or know of anything related to it,... Read more

I have very strange and frustrating problem with my Windows Vista installation. First of all I changed nothing no updates no new programs nothing, I shut it down for the night and rebooted the next morning and I received this error message 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF9800081C9C0,0xFFFFFFFFC000634,0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000). I tried repairing the issue from the windows Vista CD but no luck. I out of ideas and I can't get into safe mode, I done some searching on the net but the issue have found deal with installing Vista mostly and none have the same error code as mine. At this point it looks like a reinstall I can access my data so its not a huge deal but very time consuming. If anyone has any ideas on how to solve this one is would be most appreicated. Thanks in advance.
