Generally, should refurbished laptops be avoided?

Q: Generally, should refurbished laptops be avoided?

Are they okay to buy or is it a hit-and-miss? Or is it just a 'No'?
Also, sites don't say what has been damaged and repaired in them.
And if it's refurbshed, does that mean it could have been used for a few years, sent back and repaired? Or does refurbished mean reasonably new?

Preferred Solution: Generally, should refurbished laptops be avoided?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for the purposes of hires graphics production (PS, Illustrator, Painter etc.) and school. I'm looking at a few and I was hoping for feedback on the system specs for each. Some are refurbished and I'd like to know what experience, if any, anyone here has with Tiger Direct's refurbished laptops.

Here are the ones I'm looking at:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 and Dell Studio 17
My questions about these:

Is the Intel Core i7 really worth the extra money, or would a much cheaper Core 2 Duo serve my purposes just fine? I'm not really going to be playing games on this thing.
I've never heard of Lenovo, should I be wary of them?

MSI A6005 and Acer Aspire AS5732Z
The main difference is that the first has dedicated graphics and the second doesn't.

Any advice?

A:Advice on laptops, Refurbished generally okay?

Lenovo bought out the IBM line of PC's, they are pretty good.

No you don't need the i7, core 2 duo is plenty of processor.

Dell offers 3 kinds of refurbished, so be carefull what you choose

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/buy_refurbished?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&~lt=popup

Lenovo says this about its refurbished line

Refurbished
Product was returned with the factory seal broken.
Product may or may not have been turned on.
Product may or may not have been used. Click to expand...
I am not paticularly fond of Acer or MSI, stick will Dell, Lenovo, Asus

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

Looking for the cheapest, refurbished laptop that works best with free wifi.

I'd prefer HP laptop suggestions, but anything other than Dell will do. Never had any good experiences with Dell.

I just need a good refurbished laptop for getting on public wifi once in a while. Otherwise I really don't need a laptop. So, the cheaper the better.

I'm not really versed on electronics, especially since they change so often. So, looking for some suggestions on refurb laptops that will work for my needs.
Thanks

I've never purchased used or refurbished computer gear.

The last couple of days I was looking at some refurbed laptops for
a friend. He wants to install 98SE. 512 MB of memory is about the
limit for 98, so an older model laptop is probably a good idea.

I asked someone who has purchased several dozen refurbed (not used)
laptops for his business. I believe what he told me told me, but it doesn't
make a whole lot of sense!

All these so called "refurbished" laptops still needed new hard drives
and battery packs. Even the CMOS battery, which only costs three
or four bucks had to be replaced.

There is a popular Dell refurb that I've seen listed for $239.00. The specs
would be perfect for running 98SE. If a service contractor found a defective
hard drive or battery pack and replaced it, the retailer could never sell this
laptop for such a low price.

So, what's the final verdict on these laptops. If my friend buys one should
he expect to spend more money replacing some of the major components,
or are there online retailers selling refurbed laptops that have been completely
tested and repaired?

Hey guys, I have some questions for you. My current laptop is falling apart, so I'm looking at getting a new one, and since I don't want to spend over $500 on it and I don't need real high performance, I was wondering how good refurbished laptops are.
My brother has a six year old Dell Inspiron 1520 which is still in great condition for it's age, so I was really looking at one of those. I don't need real high graphics capabilities, but I would like to be able to run Crysis, Crysis Warhead, BM:AA, AC, FSX, NFS:HP2, etc. on it on low to medium settings, all of which we've done on the Inspiron. Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks, FSG

A recent thread brought the fact that alot of power supply questions could be answered if we had a Good/Bad power supply list in this forum. Feel free to add, or dispute. Let's limit the list to only those power supplies we've had experiences with, that way we're not just bad mouthing companies.
Hopefully, someone will sticky it.

I'll start off with the brands I recommend:
Fortran/Sparkle ( I pretty much use only Sparkle supplies, they're cheaper than Antec, gotta watch the fans though.)
Antec
Enermax

Brands I avoid and have experienced, if you have one look out!:
PowMax.
Thermaltake
FoxConn
Aopen
L & C
Allied
EagleTech
Linkworld
MGE
Deer
Ultra
Dynapower
InWin
Asys

I have two almost-new Dell Inspiron 15 laptops, one at work (i3, etc.) and one at home (i7, etc.).  Both run Windows 8.  The one at work is in daily use, the one at home I have hardly had time to use at all.

On the office laptop I am prompted regularly to update to Windows 8.1 ... and so far I have resisted doing so.  Reading the accounts in this forum, I am tempted to wonder whether it might be best to continue to resist until Win 8.1 has "matured" a little?

I was warned about the learning curve for Windows 8.  Can't say I've had any real difficulty.  In fact I've found it (apart from the Metro interface, which I hardly use any more) more straightforward than Vista.  I have no experience of Win 7 except trying to help a couple of friends by telephone (I am in California, they are in Austria )  Seems to me there might be such a thing as too much virtualization?   Anyway on my Win 8 machines I have no trouble finding where things are located (yes, I know, that's virtual space too, but at least it is organized )  I worked for years in a VM environment on IBM mainframes, before PCs appeared, so don't have any "philosophical" objections, just want to be able to find stuff when I want it .

Thanks as always,

John

I have been going through the process of building a computer for the first time and the motherboard is the final piece of the puzzle. I am seriously considering the Asus Maximus Gene-Z as the motherboard to go along with 1GB 460 Hawks OC in SLI to go along with an OC i5-2500k but I have been seeing some concerns about temperatures in general.

As far as cooling, the board would be in a mid-tower that has the dimensions of the full tower (Storm Sniper) with its default fans and the CPU would be cooled by a Corsair A70.

I do have a few ATX motherboard in mind if the mATX option isn't ideal for SLI including the MSI Z68A-GD65, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO, or ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3.

i5-2500K
Corsair A70
1GB 460GTX Hawk in SLI
2x4GB G. Skill Sniper DDR3 1600
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
Asus 24x DVD-Drive
Cooler Master Storm Sniper
Seasonic X-750

A:Is SLI on a mATX board on air usually avoided?

Personally if I was building a computer without having any hardware to start with I would probably aim for a higher end single card rather than 2 older and now mid range 460 GTX cards. That way in the future you can pickup another higher performance card and then use SLI.

As for mATX and SLI, as long as the board supports it then there is no problem. You have stated its in a full tower so airflow won't be a problem. You might find some problems such as PCI 1x slot blocked/unusable when you have two double slot (two expansion slot height) PCI-E graphics cards in the motherboard.

Hi, my name's Chris, and I was *THIS* close to finding the nearest Microsoft representative in my area and crushing the life out of him with my bare hands.

I do 3D modelling on the side, and sell the models I make. I have a model I've spent, oh, about the last 3 months working on that Vista seems to have suddenly forgotten that it ever existed.

My save file vanished. The sub folder with the texture files I had made vanished. All gone. The main file and the textures were in different folders, and it wiped the files out of my backup directory even. They weren't deleted, there was nothing even there that Windows would let my file recovery software see, they just weren't there. I just finished a full system restore to a checkpoint from a few hours ago. The folders and files still aren't there when I browse through the folder structure, yet somehow, magically, my 3D modelling software and my image editing software can see the files and folders just fine.

I've checked, the folders are set to show hidden files (in case they suddenly went Hidden for some reason), I've disabled UAC in case it was some setting there that decided I wasn't allowed to see my own damned files, no good.

Honestly, the fact that I was able to get system restore to let my editing software see the files long enough to save copies of them is the only reason I'm not looking up legal precedences right now.

Needless to say, I am *VERY* interested in finding out exactly why this happened, how to access ... Read more

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

Hello!

I'm new to this forum but I heard you guyz are some kinda pc gurus and all-around specialists in everything software so I thought you might be able to help me sort out a problem I've been having.

A year ago, I got myself a new pc and passed my old system (athon xp 2400+, 2gb RAM, gforceFX 5200 256 mb, windows XP-back then it run perfectly well-) to my sister. A couple of dayz ago she called me in panic saying she couldn't get her internet explorer to launch.
Since firefox and google chrome run normally I wouldn't really care much but from what I can tell, IE not launching is the least of her problems. The pc is generally a lot sluggier than I remember. Actually, every 10 minutes or so it appears to "lag" for 3-4 seconds (the mouse cursor is still moving around but all running aplications freeze for a bit) making runing even the simplest application a rather annoying experience. I don't remember having that kind of issues on this system a year ago and I don't think it's a hardware issue (or some kind of overheating issue since I had the cooling fan replaced a while ago).

Although Nod32 she has currently installed doesn't seem to detect any threats (and appears to be up to date) I'm pretty concerned about cpu usage frequently spiking even though hardly anything appears to be running.

There's plenty of expensive software related to her line of work installed on the system that I hardly know anything about... Read more

Hi all

I'm a newbie to the site and not really sure which forum to post this in, but this seems as good as any.

I have a problem with my PC and I don't even know if its software or hardware related.

The best thing that I can do is list my symptoms and hope that someone can point me in the right direction so here goes:

All of the following symptoms are intermittent. When they happen, several of the symptoms occur at the same time. They always occur when the pc is in standby.

- Desktop icons have been moved
- System clock has lost several hours or clock has got stuck when the pc last went into standby
- mouse and keyboard are unresponsive - usually free up after a few minutes
- sometimes mouse is fine but keyboard completely stops responding

When I check taskmanager there is nothing running that is taking up system resource.

I am running WinXP media centre Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

Any guidance gratefully accepted

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Does using a video card offer any meaningful improvement over the motherboard native video for watching blu-ray videos on an HDTV?

A:Generally speaking of course

Depending on the card, I would say yes, definitely. But MB`s are getting better all the time.

Hi can anyone answer a very stupid question? Is Adobe flash player categorised as an application? Ive been asked to install a useful application to a freshly created Linux os. It is referred to as an application in some articles but as a plug in in others. Is there a difference? If i install flash does this constitute installing a useful application to the Linux OS?
Please any help/advice, thx

PC is generally slow and sluggish overall. It's a Lenovo ThinkPad T510 running Win 7 Pro 64-bit w/ SP1. 4GB RAM. Notice it mostly as I'm using Chrome.  Typically not more than 7-8 tabs.  It's incredibly bad when waking from sleep state or coming out of screen saver mode.  Consists of a lot of brief locks/freezes, busy ring, etc. I've seen periods of high-90% memory use, as well as periods of abnormally high CPU usage. I've performed everything detailed in the "It May Not be Malware" thread.  Just looking for some relief.  Here is my FRST log, and Addition.txt is attached.  Thanks!

Hello Everybody,

I have been pointed in the direction of your forum by the Hijack this application as I am a little puzzled by the behaviour of my computer lately. There is nothing consistent with its behaviour - occasionally the mouse pointer is unresponsive, the computer will freeze, services (sound, networking) will appear and disappear and applications will not load properly. to boot, my normally fast internet service occasionally freezes and shows a number of outgoing connections in comodo when only google is loaded in the browser... i smell a fox in my henhouse!

I have run Spybot S&D and use comodo internet security, but both have come up as detecting no problems so I will give this a shot.

Attached are the DDS files, and the Hijack This log.

Hopefully you will be able to help and it is appreciated.

Kind Regards

Glad to hear another person without any major hitches when going to Windows 7. I personally enjoy it much more then XP and Vista. I have had a few problems, but even XP had the occasional problem here and there, but nothing that i couldn't fix in windows 7.

Data is stored as magnetic impulses which degrade over time. Use does damage a HD but so does time. usually the MTBF (mean time between failure) value is an indication of how long.

Hey everyone! I've got a problem and I dont know what the cause may be, or how to attempt to locate it. Issue is that system is being generally slow in almost everything.

Firefox freezes/hangs up(specially when finishing up downloads), file explorer takes up to a min sometimes to open a folder, right click menu takes time to popup, start menu takes several seconds to come up, it takes several minutes to shutdown PC, ect..

Programs I run, such as audio editing, games, ect often hangs up aswell. I run microsoft antivrius, which is far from best, yet it showed PC as clean.. This aint much info, but I doubt I can provide more unless asked about specific details..

I am using Windows7 64bit, Nvidia gtx260 card, 4gb ram, and i5. The hdd the system is on is several years old, about 3-4. Im using Microsoft security essential as antivirus, together with ad-aware.

Thanks for any tips!

Hi,

Go to start menu and type perfmon /report. It will record your systems performance for 60 seconds. Once it has finished go to File -> Save as.
Then zip the file and upload it to your next post.

Also, What brand and model is your hard drive?

So ever since i have built the pc ive been having constant BSOD. At first it used to be when gaming, and playing graphic intensive games but not its BSOD when I watch youtube and generally just using the PC. Also I had this really weird patch of time where I could not shut the PC down. If I shut the PC down and then started it up 100% of the time right after starting it up after about 1 minute of usuage it would BSOD. The second forced shutdown didnt yield an instant BSOD. I've changed the slots of the RAM and added new ram, new PSU and a new GFX card which "seemed" to have stopped the BSOD... but now theyre back again and this time I had like 5 BSOD in a row within 5 minutes.... Welcome ankurkhunger14

Firstly, some general maintenance. Update your graphics/sound drivers, and perhaps anything else that needs updating, including downloading latest versions of flash/your browser, etc. Then run some cleanup programs, such as the Windows built in Disk Cleanup and/or a third party tool, such as CCleaner (do not use the registry cleaning component). Running a disk defrag wouldn't hurt either (best to download a third party one for this, such as Defraggler).

Secondly, if your machine still runs slowly, could you please say the make/model of your laptop and what video/song/etc. you are trying to play, or anything else you do that is running slow.

Hi All,

I used be pretty good with computers, but it's been a while! I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 7. It's worked great for the last year or so, but the last 6 months it's painfully slow doing anything on the laptop. I've checked a few things listed below, but the computer is still very slow.

Ran Malwarebytes / CC Cleaner - found no major issues
Internet is slow, but network utilization is < 5% and other machines on the same network are running fine
Only two programs installed on the laptop post purchase - AVG, Picasa, and Carbonite (only back-ups at night)
Running internet programs (e.g., IE, FF, Chrome) takes up ~35% of the CPU, even when idle
Ran msconfig and didn't see any odd or irregular programs running at startup.
Plenty of space available on the harddisk

Before I reformat the laptop, wanted to see if there's something else I should check/do? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello everyone,

Lately [Since 2 weeks ago] I have been experiencing very very high ping all day, sometimes only at night, my ping isn't high in games only, but everywhere, I tried on Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test tried using CMD and pinging google, yahoo, everything is the same, I called my ISP because of this problem they told me that I am taking every single 1kb of the bandwidth I should have, and they aren't responsible for the ping problems, they also said that my line's performance is perfect and can hold up to 5mb, also there is no any noise detected. I tried everything possible, I reset my router settings, nothing happened, added the local DNS, nothing happened, and I am really desperate.

Information:
I use Ethernet cable.
No one but me is using the internet.
I scanned my computer for viruses.
Restarted the router.
Left the router off over night.
Closed every application running on the background.
Disabled the Wi-Fi.
Bought a new filter.
Changed the Cables.
An IT professional has checked my router settings using Team viewer and he hasn't found anything.

I have done so much other stuff, I really need help, also it's not with the server location since this happened only 2 weeks ago, I even had 512Kb/sec internet speed then upgraded to 1mb and I didn't even have this problem while I was 512...

Please, I need all possible solutions for this problem, because I am really desperate.

A:High ping generally.

Hello, could you get a friend to bring a laptop (known to be working well on the internet) and do some ping tests? May be helpful to sort out if it's your line\router or you pc. And a shot in the dark: try another DNS, like google DNS or Internet Security or DNS Service for your Business or Home - OpenDNS

Hi Krawlspace. If you post a HijackThis log in any other forum it will be moved to this forum. This is the only forum where HijackThis logs can be anaylzed.

Since the log shows no signs of viruses or malware HijackThis will not be of much help in resolving any issues. It is only used for malware analysis and removal. Performance issues are handled by the techs in the XP forum. When posting there, give a detailed description of the issue, what (if anything) has been done to check/verify/resolve it and any other information that would be helpful to the techs. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found, but do not post a HijackThis log in that forum. If you do, it will simply be moved back over to this forum.

Cheers.
