Duplicate name exists even after changing the name

Q: Duplicate name exists even after changing the name

Hello! I have a medium sized network with several different OS's residing on it. Everyday a few of the computer will error with "A duplicate name exists on the network:" A quick Google search shows the same answer EVERYWHERE on the internet. So I changed the names of a few of the computers too something I knew was unique. Still though the problem persists/ it afters the two XP bases computers the most, but my main workstations (windows 7 sp1) has had this error a few times, although it appears to have left for a while. I have a feenas server but Active directory is not turned on. My router is a e4200. I was using DHCP server on there (and would very much still like to) although I have turning it off, rebooted both the router and the computers but to no avail... Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The computer you are trying to boot has the same computer name as another computer on your network. Unplug the Ethernet cable to this computer and start the computer up and log in. Right click My Computer/Properties/Computer Name/Change and change the name of the computer to something different then the other one. Restart the computer with the Ethernet cable plugged in.

I have a network of approx 10 computers all running under 1 named workgroup... The problem is that I've had to format one of the computers and re configure it on d network ... on each startup i rcv an error msg 'Duplicate name exists on the network'...although internet sharing works fine i cannot view other workgroup computers.

tried changing the pc name from user account in control panel and also by right clicking on properties on my computer & changing the full computer name but to no avail..

As some of the other computers are running win 98 could it be that maybe they are keeping an alias of the previous pc configuration on the network?

Everytime I start Windows i get an error message in the form of both an error message that pops up on the welcome screen of XP and goes away without having to click OK, and as an icon on the taskbar (yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside of it) that says a "Duplicate name exists on the network". I have a Linksys Wireless-B 802.11b router with a direct ethernet connection through a port to and Xbox and also a second computer with a Wireless-B usb adapter. This error started after I hooked up the Xbox to one of the router's ports. I do not even know if this question belongs in this forum section but I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] "A duplicate name exists on the network"

Do you have a network with multiple computers (perhaps in a home with more than one computer, all connected to the same router for internet access)? The message means that at least two of them have been named the same. Go to control panel, double click system, go to computer name tab and look at the full computer name field. Make sure each computer has a different name in this field. If you find two with the same name, hit change on this screen on one of them and give it a different name. You have to reboot for the change to take effect.

4 XP Pro puters on home network:
(A) my puter: 1a, wives puter: 2a, both connected to router.
(B) sons puter: 1b, daughters puter: 2b, both connected to a hub which is connected to the router.

Within the past month, my daughter's puter will post, now and then, an error message, "Duplicate user already exists on network", after initial bootup and at the log on screen, before logging onto the puter. She would then click 'ok' and log onto her puter with no problem's.

Yesterday, my wive's puter displayed the same message on her puter.

All puter's have all sharing disabled, no mapped drives, XP firewall inabled as well as ZA Firewall basic installed and enabled. All have the same user group name: WORKGROUP.

I recently changed my computer's network name from "My-PC" to "Main-PC".

Today, I was reviewing stuff in my documents folder and noticed that I now have triplicates of every PDF file (and some others).

For instance, if I had the bank statement "statement 01-2013.pdf" then I now also have "statement 01-2013-1.pdf" and "statement 01-2013-Main-PC.pdf" showing in the same folder.

The file "statement 01-2013.pdf" won't open with the following error message:
Screenshot by Lightshot

However, "statement 01-2013-1.pdf" and "statement 01-2013-Main-PC.pdf" will both open.

Mysteriously, this has happened across a wide range of folders, but not every file in those folders is affected.

Hi, I am connected to the internet using a iinet BOB2 wireless modem and I'm using a Mac OS X at the moment.

When I enter my WPA key to connect to the network the dialog box says incorrect password. There are no issues with the password because I know how to change it and have tried various different versions in an attempt to explore the issue. Intermittently the connection does work however it then drops out again.

When I click the airport icon my network name appears as usual but a duplicate name also appears. I find this quite unusual, and the technical support person from iinet hadn't heard of it, because the name is the same but also has extra characters added to the end including garbled fonts (ie. wingdings). The name also appears and re-appears with different characters each time.

I share a wall with a neighboring university which has an extensive internet network covering a large area. I wonder if this is some kind of interference? or in a more sinister vein some kind of hacking attempt to get me to enter my WPA key?

I also have a Toshiba laptop which I've been using to double check the issues, but it has always had connectivity issues so I'm not sure its reliable. It is also intermittently picking up on this duplicate signal too but sometimes exclusively this and not the 'real' signal. When I try to connect to the 'real' signal it says acquiring network address and then stops and does not connect.

Running Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

Trouble started three weeks with Live Care crashing system. Finally got everything running last night after a two day battle to install IE7. However, in the process User Accounts were damaged.

After reinstalling Windows XP and all software except IE7, everything worked fine. Had three accounts: Admin, and two limited accounts. pw protected. After IE install and lots of talk with MS tech support, only Admin appears on log in screen. Tried to create the two accounts since all data existed in C:/documents and settings, but error message is that account already exists. Created two new accounts with new names, transferred data, all is ok.

However, I would like to return to the old account names, so I changed login procedures to require typing in Account Name, which worked for the "lost accounts" so the profiles and data must be OK.

Is there any way to restore these original account names??

Hello everyone,

So here goes the story. I had a couple of school files I needed to put into a CD-R. I inserted the CD-R into the drive and attempted to burn these files onto the CD.

I didn't know that the CD-R already had files on it. The School files were finished burning but when I opened up the CD I could only see the previous files that were on there.

The previous files that were on the CD before the school files were just random video clips, all in the avi. format. Now half of the files on the CD are still fine, they play normally on Windows Media Player. The other half of the files didn't seem to work.

I believed it was a common CD recovery issue so I attempted to recover the lost files, little did I know the files weren't even real avi. files. Here is the part that confuses me. The files that are not playable that come out to say "File Format not supported" do take up space. Some take up 1.6 mb, some take up 700 kb. It confuses me because the files take up space and claim to files yet they do not play.

When I tried using programs to fix the files it said the files were not even true avi. files. They still take up space though. As I looked farther into this problem I came to realize that the hex of the corrupted files seem to be quite different then the actual files that do work.
The good ones had "RIFF LIST or something like that" but the bad ones just had aslasga5s4f6asf15a1f... you know what I mean.

I attempted to fix this... Read more

I'm wondering if there is a simplified user interfaced program that will search the Internet for a specific .dll file. I have an extensive list in my Favorites, and Google does a decent job, but I was curious if such a program exists.

If anybody knows of such a program, it would be very much appreciated.
Speaking of which, there is this one that will back up your .dll files-

RXDLL Backup and Restore

How many times have you clicked on a shortcut only to get an error message that says such and such DLL is missing, and the only way you could get the program to work was uninstall and reinstall the software? That problem doesn't exist with RZDLLBackup. Once RZDLLBackup is installed, run the program and RZDLLBackup will scan your system for all existing (latest copy) DLL´s. The next time you receive an ERROR message saying the program won't run, open RZDLLBackup (leave the error message open), fill in the path name (from the error message) and the name of the missing DLL and RZDLLBackup will restore the missing DLL.Click to expand...

I've got an app which streams images from a URL and saves them locally. I'm using the
System.Net.WebRequest and System.Net.WebResponse classes to achieve this. When the URL is valid it's fine, everything works OK, but when it's given an invalid URL, of a domain that doesn't exit, no exception is thrown and the request is redirected to openDNS. This leads to the stream writing out a small file which contains the contents of the openDNS response page. Clearly this is not the behaviour I'm after. If the URL is invalid I want an exception to be thrown. Even the statusDescription of the response says "OK". Does anyone know how I can get around this? BTW it's in C#.

Thanks

So I got this cell phone that I want to try to connect with my supposedly Bluetooh-enabled laptop. Originally I attempted this after I had upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0, but that was rife with problems, so I downgraded back to 6. Now if I open up My Computer and double-click on My Bluetooth Places, the "hour glass" sits there for a bit as if it is actually doing something; then, it reverts back to the arrow cursor and the laptop acts as if I never asked it to do something.

I am wondering if the Bluetooth capability of my laptop is gone; I think it must be software/driver related.

Ideas? Is there a way to reinstall the drivers that were there with XP (home)?

And then order the HP recovery disk from hp or computer surgeon to reset back to factory install to get it working. I don't recall Win8 machine came with a HP recovery partition but you had to order the disk from HP or 3rd party-I could be wrong but that how I remember it. You can't use another system recovery because it is tied to that system COA and doing so would invalidate their COA something they wouldn't be happy to find out. You must use and get the Recovery disk matching your Serial number to restore your system.

This is bit of a general question. If you have passwords to all of your BIOS/UEFI settings, you have disabled  CD/USB boot , if you have your C: encrypted and good Windows password, is there still any possibility that someone can access your files/install something, if he has physical access, and even if we assume that he has the same laptop and switches the hards? And to remain completely undetected - without password reset or changing, so next time you log you to never notice that someone did something.

I am asking in order to protect myself if i need to leave my machines unnatended in the future!

I have had my HP laptop for about a year and a half running windows vista. Early on I only had AVG as an antivirus and I recall it popped up on one or two occasions showing I had a trojan on my computer--I don't recall the name. Recently I received Webroot antivirus and antispyware free from a friend and it detected a few things, that it identifies by these names: trojan wimad-m, trojan.gen, app/kilit-a, app coupbar-gen, and some random cookies. I have since downloaded many more programs. Here are what they are and what they found:

spybot- nothing
AVG 8.5- nothing
ccleaner-cleaned many files
malwarebytes- rogue.winantivirus
ad-aware- random cookies
super antispyware- random tracking cookies

As for my odd symptoms, I only have the webroot program running continuously and it has a small box that pops up in the lower right hand corner of my screen saying it is blocking my computer from accessing random sites... none of which I can recall right now because it doesn't happen all the time. There were however many many of them (hundred?) and yahoo searches of the websites showed they were not to be trusted. Also while I'm on the internet over a period of time, it progressively gets slower, and opening the task manager showes when its slow that iexplore.exe is using sometimes upwards of 500,000 k.

Recently I've run all the programs I listed earlier in both normal and safe mode and they don't find anything. I know trojans can be tricky thought and I would appreciate great... Read more

I like to use scheduled tasks to make my computer into an alarm clock. I just got this computer about 6 weeks ago, and when I tried this for the first time it wouldn't work well because something else kept waking it up early at odd hours. I gradually got that sorted to the point where I could try it again. My first trial task was named 'alarm', and when it didn't work I right-clicked on the task and deleted it. Now I can't use that name as it is apparently already in use. So I named it something else, and it works, but some task keeps waking the computer at 6am, M-F, the same as I had set for 'alarm'. I've looked through all the tasks, and a few have run at that time, but none of those are set to wake the computer. I've searched for 'alarm' and come up empty, but if it doesn't exist, why can't I use that name for a task now? Is it possible that the 'deleted' task is still running but not visible, and if so, how can I find it again? If that's not possible, how can I find what's waking my computer at 6am? I've been through every task in the scheduler, and nothing is set to do that as far as I can tell.

A:Scheduled task already exists

the possibilities are endless. it seems like every piece of commercial software will routinely connect to the internet on a set schedule, ranging from a daily check to a monthly check. if it happens daily, my first guess would be windows update, or maybe an antivirus program.
