Extracting .rar file - not enough space on C drive

Q: Extracting .rar file - not enough space on C drive

I am trying to extract a .rar file. The problem is that my hard drive is partitioned, and the C drive where all system files etc and where the OS is installed only has around 800mb free space and the file when extracted is over 1.5gb. I want to extract it to a different partition which has more than enough free space, but I can't since winrar extracts to C drive (some temporary folder somewhere) and then moves it over to the place I actually want it to be. Is there any way to get around this problem other than asking someone else to extract it for me (or freeing up space on C which is kind of not an option since its all just system files)!??

Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

yes ! download winRAR application(use google) this application gives you option to chose location where you want to extract your files. (don't use windows built-in extract utility)

Can anybody please help me!!!

I have not tested. I have not test (just to be clear). It's set up to determine % of free space (on a text file listing of servers) but could be modified to do what you want.

Hi, I'm having a little problem here, I had a game screen shots winRAR'd
to save some space about a year ago. It was around 1200 screen shots so I figured if I just compressed them all I could save a few gigs and if I ever wanted to look at my screen shots again I could just extract how many ever I wanted. Hah, a year later (being today) I felt like going through my old screen shots and I opened up the .rar file, made a new folder to drag all those screens! well, here we go, it takes about 3 minutes for it to completely finish and what does it say? "Drag and Drop Failed"! Oh man, while I was doing this I was also looking at my (C:) drive watching 2 MB get eaten up every few seconds (because each screen shot was around 2 MB each). Anyways after that error popped up I figured the space would come back which totaled to be around 2 GB... BUT NOTHING! nothing came back, and none of the screen shots extracted into my folder, I'm not sure if these are in my temp folder of some sort, and also I tried using the search engine to find out if the screen shots went somewhere else... no luck. I'm not that great with these kinds of problems so I was hoping someone here could assist me in getting my space back!

I downloaded a zip file that contains an executable .JAR program file and 2 zipped .tar files. i have two laptops - one has only win zip installe and another one has both winrar and win zip. When i open this zip file in the laptop which does not have winrar, i can see the .jar file in the win zip window and its file type shows as executable jar file. However the .tar files are still zipped so i double click on them and I get the error "Error reading header after processing 0 entries". Now, when I try to open the downloaded zip file on the laptop that has both winrar and win zip, I can see the two .tar files (File type: TAR file) however, the .jar file's file type changes to "WinRAR archive" and even the icon against the file changes from the typical .jar icon (Java cup inside a rectangle) to WinRar icon (which looks like 3 colorful books on top of each other).

I need your help in extracting these 3 files in such a way that their file type remains "executable Jar file" and "TAR file" respectively.

computer is a HP Pavlion DV 7. Intel core i3. 6 gb ram. have two of the same computers. only difference is, one has a second hard drive (500gb) dedicated for My Documents.
The second hard disc gets full, yet adding up the files sizes, the total actual file size is low (~175 gb). The used space was ~450 gb. I have reformated this second disc and copied back all of My Documents. After this, the used space was ~175 gb. After two months time it is up to 285 gb used. still the actual files on this drive only add up to ~175 gb. The primary (system) disc is 280gb in size and has 113 gb used. this has NOT changed for a year. The primary disc has the system and other software ONLY on it.
The second computer without the second hard drive is full also.
It appears that the operating system bloats My Documents with something like Dark Matter, unseen stuff that fills the hard drive.
This has never happened using Windows XP over the many years and computers.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?

Perhaps you have your "system restore" option set ON for you data partition. Since you're always updating your data, Windows is retaining what might be considered "silent recovery" versions of previous data, in case you have a problem or decide to restore to a "restore point" in time.

You probably need to adjust your settings for this type of "protection", either to disable it entirely for your data drive or at the very least to reduce its size.

(1) Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System, and then click on the "Advanced System Settings" on the left side.

You'll then get a System Properties window, and you should select the "System Protection" tab. Select the second drive letter, which I'm guessing should say "ON" for its protection.

The "ON" results in data regularly going into the "System Volume Information" folder on the drive, which grows regularly over time and needs to be "constrained".

(2) Your choice is either (a) turn it OFF completely, or (b) limit its size before it starts deleting the oldest/obsolete "system restore point" versions, retaining only the most recent for your use in case you want to restore your data using one of these.

Of course you need to look at the date/time stamps on these when and if you ever do want to restore from these, but at least they're there if you need them, and they've been constrained in to... Read more

How do I extract a file from a cabinet file that is located on the Windows 2000 Professional Operating System Workstation Installation Cd. The reason that I ask is:

A fiew days ago, I attempted to take a look at foreign search engines that are not normally available to american users. To accomplish this, I used ICQ to take me to Euroseek and then selected the country that I wanted. Then I got a page that was written in English and another countries language. I then tried to click on a search engine that was not in English and did not use the same character set and I was prompted to intall a file called c_862.nls from my operating system disk setup.

I then went to Start, and then Settings, and then Regional in Windows 2000 Professional Workstation, clicked on the foreign language support that I wanted and again I was prompted to install c_862.nls from the operating system Cd. I tried using Winzip 8.0 to extract the file and got an error message that says that I am not the owner of the program and do not have administrative rights.

Is there an expander on the Win2k somewhere or somewhere else that I can use to accomplish this? Or can the file that I want be obtained from someone else.

We have a WD800JB-00CRAI1 hard disk, partitoned into 4 primaries and 4 further logical partions, running under WinXP pro. The first 3 primaries contain separate installations of WinXP - we pretend we have 3 separate computers for 3 people.

Question: My son has a 30 GB data partition on the drive. He deleted several large files (burning images and such) and expected to see about 7.5 GB free space. Instead, he got 500MB free space and about 7. GB disappeared.

Win XP reserves a max of 3.6 GB for restoral acc to the control panel. He couldn't find the missing space in Norton Utilities, either, ie the space was occupied, but no files were listed.

Western Digitals "Data Lifeguard" returns that the hard disk has no errors. We wiped the partition with Norton Wipe Info. Now the 30 GB partion shows a 29.3 GB capacity and 3.43 GB used, but no files are to be seen. Norton shows 24.7 KB worth of Recycler and System Volume informatin, but no info on the rest of the 3.43 GB. We reduced the Norton Unerase Protection to 600 Mb on that partiton, but there was no change in the 3.43 used. With the NTFS file system we shouldn't have cluster waste. So what gives? Any ideas?

Thanks.

I would be grateful for any help on a problem I have. This entails extracting data from files names and inserting it into an Excel file. Not wishing to reinvent the wheel I have searched, but without success, for how this could be achieved.

Basically, I have a directory full of MP3 files. What I need is a script which will go through each of the files in the directory and extract the 3 parts of the file name together with the extension and save all these to a comma delimited csv file. The next bit I can do as it is straightforward as it involves just importing this csv file into Excel.

Each file name has the same format ie it has 3 sections separated by a hyphen and a tilde (alway in the same order) eg:
Blue Murder - The Screaming Habdabs ~ 1975 Lossiemouth Live In The Hanger.mp3

I need to save the data from each file in a csv file as:
Blue Murder,The Screaming Habdads,1975 Lossiemouth Live In The Hanger, MP3

I suspect that this will require Regex to achieve and that is probably beyond me!

Thank you for any help you can offer

A:Extracting data From File Name

The problem is that a .csv is a database file. I think what you need to do is strip the extension from the file names and then import those names into a database table using a database program which can export to Excel. I've posed the question about this in a database forum and will let you know what I find.

Hello dear community.

I am currently trying to extract the contents on a .snp file but i'm out of luck. I have already tried the "Microsoft snapshot viewer" but it only gives my an error message.
"An error occured while opening a Snapshot file"

I also read, that you can print the contents of the file to a text-document or use a program to convert it to a PDF. I haven't tried that yet, but i assume this only works, if there is only Text in the .snp file to begin with. My file is 3.5 GB big and should contain images, sound-files and various other things. I don't believe you can convert that into a PDF?

So if any of you have an idea of how to solve this problem, that would be really great.
Of course i will try to provide all further information that you need.

That's all for now.

Thanks

hi,

I have a file which is in .daa file format and I'm out of ideas on which programs can extract it. Apparently, my power archiver appeared to be able to open it, but then after some processing an error message popped out saying that the file is not a valid archive.

I was wondering whether there is another file extractor program which is associated with this .daa format and can open it.

A:extracting a .daa file format

File Extension .DAA Details
http://filext.com/file-extension/daa

If the .daa file is in a zip then it should extrack.
But if the file is bad then it will tell you and that may be what your seeing.

You can try a repair.

http://lists.thedatalist.com/pages/Archiving_Tools.htm
See list and they say repair.
IZArc does a "Repair broken archive" too but it does not say so there but does at there site.
7-Zip may also repair.
I had both on my other PC and forget what one it was that worked when others did not.
Now I was using it to unzip compress files where one of the files were bad and most if one file is bad you can not unzip the zip at all. But with the one 7-Zip or IZArc I was able to repair or open the zip and get the files. Note that it may still have the one bad file in the zip but I was able to get the other files from the zip with one of those two programs.

Then where ever you got the zip file from you could try getting another copy of it.

I have been using a Sony Vaio laptop for the past 3 years, until it died suddenly a few weeks ago.
Fortunately, I have been backing up my HD using Windows Backup Manager, which condenses all the info on my computer into a 3.97 GB .BKF file and stores it on a Lacie external HD.
After much debate, I decided to switch platforms and purchased a 15" MacBook Pro.
Here's where the trouble crystalized:
As my Sony laptop is totally dead the only way to get at all my information is through said BKF file, however Mac does not recognize/deal with such files...so, it seems that the only way to transfer my old files onto my new Mac now, is to somehow procure another (functioning, albeit expendable) PC laptop to to use as a clone/dummy, and to restore my old computer onto it (using the "restore" function of the Backup Manager) and then to go in manually and copy all the files I'd like to save and move them back onto my external HD, and then hop them over to my Mac....which seems crazy and round-about...
Please tell me there's another, easier way to go about this process!
Thanks so much in advance for your help!
Ian

Well, if you were backing up your OS and Programs you will not be able to restore that Since these are files are specific to Windows and will not work on a Mac. What you can do is if you have an Intel Mac to get Boot Camp or Parallels and install XP on the Mac. then you can restore all your Windows OS, Files and Programs to that XP install and have full access to them.

Hi everyone.

Im running XP Pro with 2x 160GB HDD i also have a 500GB External HDD with all my work, programs, pics, movies etc...

The external HDD was getting full so i decided that i would delete all the old crap i had hanging around, i copied all the files i wanted into one folder called backup then compressed (using the default settings) with tugzip, this took most of the day and when it was done i opened the archive and tested it using the tugzip explorer.

All seemed to be working, so with that done i copied the now 125GB Zip file to my C: drive and formatted my external HDD.

Now when i copied the file back to the HDD and attempted to extract it a window flashes for a second, (not long enough to get a good look at it) and wont go any further, if i choose the option of extract to: F:\backup it will create the empty folder called backup and thats it.

I read around on the tugzip support website saw some one who had a similar problem and they fixed it by making a self executable out of the existing zip file, gave that a go but when i tried to run it windows tells me thats its not a valid win32 application.

All my photos and important work are on here, please help.

after turning it back on, same thing. Then i went into safe mode, in safe mode it does not happen so i figured i'd just erase the files and it'll be fixed.

So when trying to erase, rename or move, windows gets stuck on discovering files and never changes.

when trying to use command prompt to erase them i get "the system cannot find the file specified. and iv'e tried and rechecked over 100 times now.

I can open a command prompt inside the folder but same thing, system can't find the file specified.

So as far as i can tell, the files don't exist, but they show up there and i'm 99.999% sure thats whats causing the issue.

I really hope someone here can help, and fast. I'm literally going to fail 3 projects if i can't access my computer today, and reinstalling windows is pretty much out of the question as i just don't have t... Read more

A:Solved: Extracting Data From File Name

Hi

I'm not certain about the final result you require. It sounds like you want an Excel spreadsheet with all your files listed in 4 columns.

If this is correct here is an approach you might take.
Go to the MP3 directory in a DOS window
Type this command --> dir /b > files.txt
In windows explorer in the same directory as your MP3 files double click on files.txt
Copy the contents of that file
Open a new Excel file and right click cell A1 and Paste
From there you can parse your file names using Data to Columns 3 times
the first time using "-" as delimiter
the 2nd time use "~" as delimiter
the 3rd time use "." as delimiter
Another option, if you need to do this frequently, would be to use VBA which can read the file names from the directory and parse them.

Hi

I have create a self extracting winzip exe file to place a file into this location C:\AALAAS\Prod which
currently exists. This works fine.

However, when I got to that location I fine that it also creates a AALAAS folder and Prod folder inside
this location C:\AALAAS\Prod. Why is this happening?

The file that is being extracted is place in its correct location.

Am I missing a setting?

Hi, just a quick question. I just opened the file WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-X86-ENU.exe with Winzip and extracted a file called atapi.sy_ to a folder on my computer. Now to use that file should I just change the _ to s, and I'm ok to go?

In the future, should I use a different utility to extract files from a self-extracting cabinet file or is it ok to stick with Winzip? I believe Microsoft has some .exe that extracts files, I just can't remember the name of it.

I realize that copying that file to SP2's installation is a little bit iffy because there could be other files/registry settings, etc.. but I'm trying to trick the SP3 update into thinking I have the newer version so it doesn't ask me if I want to copy it. I think this will work. I get a stop when I try to install SP3. So I may have to boot into Linux if cmd line won't allow me to copy. Unlocker does not solve this problem. This should work.

Can msconfig be used - it works on .cab files, would it work on .exe cabinet files?
Thanks.

You can normally extract files without WinZip just use kbfile.exe -x c:\files the .sys file is compressed so you need to use expand filename newfilename

Had a bad storm last night, so I shut down the comp. Restarted this a.m. tried to stream the Arsenal match and mozilla would crash every time I tried to leave the home page. Went to IE, watched the match, and then began to TS moz.
After a bit I decided to unistall. Upon trying to reinstall i get a corrupt file error msg during extraction. I then tried to d.l. Chrome and had problems w. that too. Yet amazingly enough, IE works fine. Is this Microsoft just f'in w. me 'cause I'm not amused?
I also notice that in my start menu I have quick select icons for network connections, control panel, etc. any help would be great. thx.

I'm looking for a way to extract audio from video files. What program do I use? What I mean is to turn audio from a video file into a PURE audio file which can be used to make an audio CD, etc.

A program like Audacity with the whole Stereo mix option does not work for me... bad drivers.

So it looks like I need a program that will literally allow me to EXTRACT the audio, not merely record it.

Please help me find a program! But I'll also need instructions on how to use the program since I'm usually not good with those things!

Thanks!

Look in 7-Zip first: See attributes... an H means hidden... right click -> properties from 7-Zip and uncheck the hidden property.

If this doesn't work, you might have got some malware to yourself.

A:Extracting a zip file from Windows Vista

If it is a standard .ZIP file, you can double-click on the ZIP to see what files it contains and copy and paste any of the files you want extracted. Just right-click on the file you want and select copy, go to where you want the file to be extracted to, then right-click again and select "paste". Alternatively, you can right click on the ZIP file and select "Extract All..." to extract all files using a simple wizard.

Hi,

I recently restored my notebook back to factory default. I backed up most of everything manually
including the registry which I basically just exported as a .reg file. I don't want to restore the registry,
just keys to certain programs I want to restore.

I've read that one method is to create a temporary hive in the registry, but this seems extremely
dangerous as my pc suffers from BSODs from time to time. If this were to happen before I could
remove the hive, I have no doubt my pc would be destroyed.

If anyone knows a safer method I would greatly appreciate your input.

A:Need help extracting registry keys from a .reg file

You should solve the BSOD issue before putting more time/effort into setting up this computer.

A ".REG" file is just text. Open it in notepad and search for what you want.

I just downloaded a movie clip from the internet in a .rar file, found out i needed winrar to extract the files, so i went and installed it. but when i went to go to try and extract the file it tells me

"you need the following volume to continue extraction"
it shows me the path to where its being extracted to, "C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\MWKTKH3I\Eragon_2006_DvDrip_Eng_.part2[1].rar"
than it says in the bottom
Insert a disk with this volume and press OK to try again or cancel to break extraction.

I looked in there help section, but it said nothing about it.
I have no idea what i need to do.
any help is appreciated.

I'm afraid this crashdump isn't enough to work with. I recommend turning on Driver Verifier. Do not select the following checks: Force Pending I/O Requests, IRP Logging, and Low Resource Sim. Select all other checks. Make sure to restart system after you finish setup. If you experience a boot loop afterwards, go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 prior to Windows logo and disable DV there. Provide us any new crashdumps.

I have created for the 1st time series of PowerPoint which ended up being zipped with Winrar without my direction. In fact they initially do not look zipped until I engage the process of uploading them on my website via a hosting company. It is at that point when uploading, that I can see from the upload process that the file is zipped. And zipped files cannot be uploaded. They must first be UNZIPPED.

In the process of trying to extract the powerpoint ,I have saved a Zip file and proceeded to extract it but extraction was not satisfactory as none of the files therein did carry the powerpoint content I'm looking for.

I'll be glad to send you the Winrar file upon request if you deem it necessary and the original powerpoint which surprisingly doesn't look zipped at all but when subjected to uploading procedure generates a zip file to my great surprise.

Please I need help to decipher this uncommon behavior. Please see TSG SysInfo below

Thanks
