Win 7 64-bit ipconfig returning many Media disconnected messages

Q: Win 7 64-bit ipconfig returning many Media disconnected messages

Hello,

I have not noticed any problems with my computer however when I try to run ipconfig in the command line I get a HUGE list of messages saying media disconnected. Here is the list, and I think it is still cut off a bit... This output is completely useless to me. I know there are other ways to get my IP but I would really like to know what is wrong here.

Here are my system specs:

Computer: Laptop -Sony Vaio FW510D
OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
Antivirus: ESET Smart Security 4.0.467.0 (DB:5306)
Wired Adapter: Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Wifi Adapter: Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. My internet connection is not working. It keeps telling me that the cable from the computer to the cable modem is disconnected. When I go into ipconfig it says media disconnected. It was working fine until tech support tried to help me set up my router, they went into ipconfig and suddenly the internet went out after they did a few things but I don't know what it was that caused it. I have Win Vista, comcast Cisco cable modem. The ethernet card seems to be pinging just fine. I can connect to my laptop just fine but not the desktop. There are two files attached. The ipconfig file is from my desktop. The laptop ipconfig file is from my laptop. I've talked to comcast tech support and their only advice was to re-install win vista. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I made the mistake of downloading MS XP Service Pack 3 onto both my computers 2 days ago. The PC cabled to the router did not seem to have any issues but my laptop has lost connection.
Router is Linksys WRT54G ver. 6

What I have tried to do:
Removed service pack 3 from both computers after reading of similar issues with loss of connection.
Have done a System Restore on laptop to point before download.
Have done a Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
Have done a Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
ipconfig states Media disconnected;
1394 connection status says connected but 0 packets moving
What is my next step?

Thanks...

hi,
--From the laptop, Remove all the preffered networks and connect to your network and check for the ip address.

--still it says media state disconnected, try to connect to some other
unsecure network and check whether its connecting to that network or not.

--if its connected, change the channel on the router.try with 1,6,11 and disable the security and try to connect to your network.

--After disabling the security for your network, if you able to connect to your network, upgrade the software for the router.
--If you are not able to connect to unsecure network(others network and your network),then there is problem with wireless adapter in the laptop.

Hi All, ............. In Windows 7 I have two sata hard drives that I usually run with either one as a image backup and disconnected. When disk one is operating I can't get on the internet. With disk one disconnected and disk two operating I can use the internet. For each of these disks I get the "media disconnected" message when using ipconfig.

Making an internet connection with disk one is my problem. Because I have forgotten how to set up the internet connection the ipconfig is as far as I can go. Can any one provide some guidance as how to fix my disk one problem?

Hey guys, this is another ipconfig media disconnected post. You won't believe me but i did go through at least 6 or 7 posts about this problem and i was not able to find a solution.

I'll try to do the best i can to tell you about my situation, but english is not my first language and computers science and programming are not my areas of expertise.

So, i live in a dorm. The internet on the rooms is by ethernet cable only. There is a little jack in the wall, in which i plug my cable, and then to the computer. I would simply plug the ethernet cable into my laptop (hp dv3, windows vista 64 bit) and i would be able to surf the web. This stopped working yesterday at 1700 hours. As of that moment, i have not been able to go on the internet.

As you're probably thinking right now, yes, i am able to connect to wireless networks. So, today i began looking for solutions and i will list them as clearly as i can, to try to answer future questions.

1) It is only my problem, i have a roomate and the internet on his comp is just fine. This brings me to the next point.

2) I did swap the cables and the jacks, nothing worked. However, i think my cable did not work on his (i will try that later as i dont recall actually trying it).

3) I did this: disable wireless network, reboot, try wired. That did not work either.

4) Then, i was told about dynamic ip and static ip, i don't know how to go about that so i did the ip config command, which showed me the media disconnected... Read more

I just got a DELL STUDIO XPS Laptop which runs on Vista.

I have established an ad hoc computer to computer network with another laptop

The ad hoc wireless connection shows that both laptops are connected to the "C-Print" software that we mutually use.

However, when I go to connect to a common server we are unable to connect.

When I run "ipconfig" it shows "Media Disconnected"

There is a little "Tower" icon in the middle of the DELL laptop above the numbers on the keyboard. That is turned "ON" so I do not know why the ipconfig shows that the Media is "NOT Connected."

Could somebody please help me on this as I need to use this ad hoc connection at work?

Thank you

A:ipconfig shows "Media Disconnected"

I would contact your work IT people, and see if they know the answer. There could be custom settings that need to be in place before you can connect.

Hello,

I have a 1 year old Acer laptop. It is an XP with SP2. It has a wireless card built in. I also have Internet service with Comcast. So I decided that I wanted to try to set up my laptop as wireless by buying a wireless Buffalo router. Long story short I returned that router, I guess I'm not made for doing these kinds of things. It looked like the lights on the router is what I was suppose to see, but I could never get an internet connection. It would also tell me that I was connected to so and so wireless network. After a couple days of frustration I installed the router software again which I think made it worse. I called Comcast and they gave me the command of ipconfig/release. I hope, I'm giving you the right information because I'm trying to remember from 2 months ago. I believe as soon as this happened when I would do an ipconfig it kept saying Ethernet adapther Local Area Connection: Media State.......: Media disconnected. I'm not blaming Comcast but they were not able to help me. There is definetely something wrong, it never use to say this.

All I want to do now is just be able to connect my LAN cable to my Comcast router and forget the fancy wireless deal. But I can't even get an internet connection. Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Also, I tried to do a system restore but it did not work.

Ok, so here's my problem. I bought a computer from someone on craigslist, an Acer Aspire R1600 with the NVIDIA ION chipset. I just got ethernet working thanks to help in another thread that the seller of the computer created.

I have been searching for other people's work on solving this issue and tried their solutions. These include but are not limited to

-making sure tcp/ip is enabled, along with DHCP and DNS (ip address config set to automatic)
-Installing various different driver versions for my WLAN adapter
-Completely uninstalling all WLAN drivers and removing the files, then letting Windows automatically install the drivers it finds, this solved someone's problem. No luck for me.

Hi,
This is my 1st post here.

I've got a problem with my brand new USB wifi adapter. It's the TP-LINK TL-WN721N.
I've installed the latest drivers from the website.

The problem is, when I run "ipconfig", the Wireless device status is displayed as "Media Disconnected". I can scan other wireless networks around my area, and I've used "inSSIDer" as well and it works too.

Also there's no problem with the driver and device manager shows no errors either.

I've tried re-installing the driver multiple times, with the firewall(default Windows) enabled and disabled.

My OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Wireless chipset: Atheros AR9271 Wireless

A:ipconfig - Wireless device status is displayed as "Media Disconnected"

Can you detect your wireless network? If so, exactly what happens when you try to connect? Since you are having trouble you have disabled encryption and MAC Address filtering on the router until you get it working, right?

Hello,

So I've been banging my head all day trying to get my internet back working on my Compaq. It (the internet) cacked out on me this morning with my D-Link DWA-130 Wireless adapter. After uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, etc and then finally testing it on this (my working internet) laptop, and discovering that it was indeed the adapter that had died.

Deciding that a month out of an adapter is pretty poor, I've now got a Belkin FD8053 N Wireless adapter. Unfortunately it appears as though the ghost of the DWA has decided to stall my internet permanently.

I installed the Belkin ok, and the light blinks quickly for a few seconds then goes off for a few minutes. In the Belkin configuration utility itself, it seems to recognise the adapter is there (as does the remove hardware icon in the system tray) but there are no networks to be found. As well, in the system tray options, "Enable radio" will not work!

To back this up, there is no "wireless network" icon in the network connections folder, and no wireless icon in the system tray.

IPCONFIG recognises that the adapter is there, but displays "media disconnected". /Release and /renew is not working.

So after perusing the forums, I downloaded and copied over Xirrus Wi-Fi inspector. Lo and behold, Xirrus can find my network (and the ones around it) no problem! So what the heck is going on?

Here's a brief explanation of what those are:

ISATAP (Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol) is an IPv6 transition mechanism meant to transmit IPv6 packets between dual-stack nodes on top of an IPv4 network.

Unlike 6over4 (an older similar protocol using IPv4 multicast), ISATAP uses IPv4 as a virtual nonbroadcast multiple-access network (NBMA) data link layer, so that it does not require the underlying IPv4 network infrastructure to support multicast.

ok, I'll try to make this as concise as possible... HAD one Win7PC and two XP SP3 PCs connected (wired) to cheap walmart Belkin N router. Had a bad lightening storm and router shut off. when turned on wireless still could connect to router and the Win7 desktop could also, but there was no internet access and the two wired XP connections could no longer connect. Looked at modem and the modem was not recognizing a link to the router at all. plugged my laptop direct to modem and light shows link and I get internet. SO, I determined the router input port(comes in from modem) got fried during a surge from storm.
SO, bought a new Linksys Cisco E2500 wireless N router. wireless works good, the Win7 desktop once again connects fine and has internet. The two OLD XP computers still show "media disconnected" so I hooked them direct to modem and the LINK light on the modem does not light up. Am I probably correct to assume that the onboard ethernet got fried on the two PCS also? the one wired connection that survived the storm is a new computer(dell) with separate ethernet card whereas the two older XP's had onboard. Is there maybe some sort of surge protection built into new NICs that the old motherboards didn't have?
What is more strange is :
1. (we will call them XP PC1 and XP PC2) XP PC1 will take a static IP and shows up in ipconfig and says connected in task bar, but says "aquiring connection" forever and never finds it.
2. XP PC2 on the other h... Read more

I am running Outlook 2010 on a windows 7 pro 64bit computer. I regularly send a message to myself if I find a link with information that I want to save in my inbox. However in the last week or so if I do this, the message goes to the outbox, and is sent pretty well immediately. I check the sent box, and it is shown as sent. Almost exactly 2hrs later I get these messages. I have set outlook to check for messages every 5 mins and that works ok, I get messages sent to me from other sources ok. If I check the account settings and do the test function, the generated Outlook test message comes straight back to me.
This is happening on my laptop similarly configured as well. If I use another email client like Thunderbird all works fine. I have checked with my ISP and they did a remote connect and after a couple of hours gave up in total frustration. I am set up with POP3
I have uninstalled Office 2010 completely and done a fresh installation, and the problem still persists.
I also have 2 separate email addresses and the same happens on both of them.
Any help on this can of worms very much appreciated.

As an after-thought, I deleted the latest office updates, and this made no difference either, I suspected they may have been the culprit. Really got me beat this one has...

I'm new to server administration but am familiar with the basics. This is for a computer on an office network through a server (Windows server 2003). There have recently been new computers introduced to our network and this is one of the ones that was replaced but is now going to be put back into service. I am not able to get it to connect to our network or the internet....

I did ipconfig/all & this is what it tells me.

Host name - 07s300
Primary DNS suffix - xxxxx.com
mode type - Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled - No
WINS Proxy Enabled - No

Etherenet adapter Local Area connection 3:
Media State - Media disconnected
Description - Realtex RTL8169/8110 Family GIGABIT Ethernet NIC
Physical Address - 40-4A6B-0C-04-38

I looked at the netword card through device manager and it says it's working properly. When I look at My Network Places it tells me the network cable is unplugged..... I've changed out the network cable with one that works on another computer that worked.

Any ideas...I'm trying to have this up and running for Monday morning...

I hope there's someone here that can help me. I've installed Outlook 2007 running on Windows Vista. I'm connecting to three of my online accounts via POP. Everything's working great in terms of receiving and sending e-mails, except for this one weird issue.

I have created sub-folders under my Inboxes. Anytime, I send a new message or forward a message while I'm in a subfolder, the message appears to send, however the message does not appear in the Sent Items folder and returns back to the subfolder that I'm in like I'm receiving a new message, but it's the message that I just sent. When I send a message from the top level Inbox, everything works perfectly. I've had my accounts set-up with Outlook 2003 running on XP and never had this issue. I can't figure out what's going on for the life of me. Does anyone out there know why messages that I send while in a subfolder would not appear in the Sent Items folder and would return back to the Subfolder I was in when I sent it and how to fix this issue???

Thanks!

Alright so I own a desktop OPtiplex Gx260 (if i'm not mistaken)

It runs windows XP s3 Home edition
While the lap top runs Windows 7.
Now That that shouldn't really be contributing factors to the issue, just wanted to give some background info.
I have had constant internet problems for the passed 2 months, and I could not seem to figure out why. That is until someone from the internet idiotically tried to blame it on my cordless phone, which I know is not causing the issue they just always jump to that.

The issue seems to be originating from what I can tell an IP conflicting between my desktop and wireless laptop. I stumbled upon a media disconnection issue on both and decided to ipconfig/release, and then renew the IPs of both.

The desktop release, and renew, worked like a charm!

However the lap top is telling me it cannot do so due to the disconnected media.

I attempted to copy and paste the results but upon using keyboard shortcuts it merely types stuff like A^, or C^ .

Any advice?

I am having a really frustrating problem. I shifted from London to another town and joined uni. Since then my laptop ( dell vostro) is unable to connect to the university's WiFi network. The network icon says connections available, but simply does not display anything on clicking it.

I went to cmd and when I type ipconfig - it says "no operation can be performed while media is disconnected". I have also tried setting up the university's WiFi network manually (using wpa-2 enterprise and aes). It just does not catch it. Also tried deleting all network profiles, setting up manually, restoring windows to a previous point and using cmd (netsh - shows media disconnected; access denied to reset)...

I have checked 100 times to see if airplane mode is off, wireless (radio) is on. There is no switch on vostro to fiddle around..

What could the problem be?? Any solution would be very appreciated!! This has happened just within 4 hours of journey. WiFi was available before, then journey, then cannot display network!!
Troubleshooting is of no use either....

Does it work with an external wifi adapter?

If it does then you have a cnfiguration issue with your built in wifi. There are so many that its easier to just go to
Device manager
Find your built in wifi adapter
Uninstall that adapter (do not check delete files)
On top in the ACTION block, select scan for hardware changes
It will find the adapter and reset all its settings to default
Now try to connect to your WIFI
If you need to specify a particular IP address then do so, if not then you should have access after entering the password.

My friend's mother is trying to connect through wifi on her dell studio 3717? (i think) laptop.--vista. Anyways, I have gone through all of my personal available knowledge and resource on computers. When she connects to Hastings public wifi connection, the connection reads good. However, when she opens IE it reads (the webpage cannot be displayed. This is unexceptable...so I had her readout over the phone because she lives in Montana, whereas I live in oklahoma, the ipconfig /all info. It was originally telling her that it couldnt communicate with the dns server blah blah blah. So i had her go to manage network connections, right click on the wireless network, and manually change the v4 dhcp server name to the one it couldnt connect to. To no avail. No internet. Tried resetting TCP/IP stack. and Winsock. No internet. Tried turning off all Firewall, Windows Defender settings and tried unchecking v6. Still no Internet. Any ideas? It shows her connection is good, just no internet. Thank you.

So I have a wireless network setup on a Linksys router that I have a couple laptops hooked up to. Well one of the laptops crashed recently, and in going through some things in the garage I came across my old roommates HP PC. So I hooked it up and got everything running, but no internet whatsoever. I ran an ethernet cable directly to the router from the PC, but the light on the router isn't lighting up (and I know it's not the cable as I hooked it directly up to my laptop & it works). I did an ipconfig and this is what comes up...

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name....................your-4f1261a8e5

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State....................Media disconnected
Description....................Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
Physical Address....................00-11-D8-AA-C4-BE

So I'm assuming by that mention of "Media disconnected" that it's something directly correlated to the actual hardware in the PC itself that might need to be looked at and/or changed out..? Just a guess on my part though as I'm completely dumbfounded.

Any advice out there?! Thanks ahead of time.

Hello, whenever I open ipconfig in the command prompt, I get a message stating that I have my media disconnected. If I try to perform an operation, it tells me that nothing can be done while the media is disconnected. I am still able to access the Internet, and my wireless tells me that the connection is fine.

Is there any way to reconnect the media? I'm not even very sure as to what its actual function is, but it seems like it shouldn't be that way.

I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition (v2002) on a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Intel Centrino Duo), with Service Pack 3 installed. My router is a WGT624v3. I do have my wireless enabled via Fn+F2, and my connection is otherwise completely normal.

(Unrelated question: When I try to access my router to port forward, I get a prompt asking for a username and password; I do not recall setting either of these. Does anyone know what the default login details for my router are (Disregard, I found the answer through Google)? And does having my media disconnected affect whether I can port forward or not? I recall accessing my router and attempting it, but I was told the ports in question were already being forwarded to [despite the fact that I had just gotten the router].)

Uninstalling/reinstalling the wireless card may help. Just something as simple as that has many times fixed my networking woes. :grinthumb

Well tired of searching and not getting out of it, I reinstalled windows 7. 1 hour after doing this the internet connection worked fine again. I now looked at the configuration and copied this state; at least I know now how it should be, if the connection works fine. I also checked the services and noticed a lot of them were not working at the time of the problem. So copied that too. Matter of knowing how it should be. It was a good lesson, painfull though :-(

hi danmwx and welcome to the forums! i have a netgear G router that is a couple of years old but you don't usually have to use the cd to setup a router. most of the time they have a default configuration that works well. i don't lock up my router as most of my neighbors have their own access to the internet and i don't catch them using it LOL. just power cycle both the modem and the router (i assume you've already done that though! i put that there for noobs who have the same problem) and it should redownload the IP address and give your computer and internal address. if that doesn't work it might be a bad network card or cable(s) you are using. also try removing the network card drivers and rebooting so the computer can reinstall them. might be bad drivers too.

Hi there annoyed1...

Could you provide a bit more detail regarding your problem?

1.) Are you trying to connect to your router via ethernet cable, or wirelessly?
2.) Have you made sure that the problem is not with your internet service (ISP) ?
3.) What router are you using?
4.) Have you tried connecting with a different computer?

Hello everyone recently a lightning bolt hit near my house frying my old unprotected modem so recently we picked up a new one. I thought I knew how to install a modem (seemed easy enough the first time >.>) but lo and behold it doesn't work. i did an ipconfig check and it says "media disconnected" for the ethernet adapter. but for some strange reason i can still connect to the internet through the USB port on my modem just not the ethernet port. Yet I need the ethernet port for my router which i haven't setup yet so it's not a factor.

Hi:What's device manager look like ?Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. should be enabled and working properly.
5. If error code,what is it ?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
