DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit

Q: DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit

I apologize for my english in advance.
Yesterday I update my laptop to Windows 8.1(full specifications are available in my profile).
Then I noticed the following: The icon of DVD drive was changed and:
"Drive is powered off. To turn on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive".
After pressing the DVD drive is powered on, but after few minutes it powered off again.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hello,

It has been some time since I have been to sevenforums. I have missed you guys!

I was here almost every hour on the hour back when I built my PC and was installing windows7 for the first time. Now I have a new laptop and I would like some expert advice!

I bought a new, to me, Lenovo X230 Thinkpad recently and it came with windows7 installed. I am a person who enjoys simplicity, uncluttered space, and efficiency. In my desktop, and overall in my OS. Are there any tips, or guidelines for trimming down many of the programs and extraneous applications that come along with nearly every manufacturers' computers today? Should I reinstall a clean version of windows7? Is that possible with only the recovery partition on the laptop?

For example, I don't need 2 battery power applications. Either disable or remove the windows battery manager, or the Lenovo. Things like that.

I would also like to remove and backup the recovery partition from the laptop, but it doesn't have an optical drive. Then I could have more space, and only one partition. Not sure the best way to go about this. I have an external drive that I can backup the partition to.

If you want any more information about the current state of the laptop, just ask! I enjoy conversing and learning from the good people here.

Thanks again guys... glad to be back!

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD. Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.

When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.

Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Friday I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.

Windows 8 does not play nice with older hardware, especially older Intel hardware. You did not post if you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. Intel does have updated drivers for that GPU. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...01&FamilyId=39

Try the latest drivers and see if that works. As for changing the motherboard. You would not be able to do so with a Laptop. Since they are specific to the case.

I was on the phone with tech support, and they told me they were shipping Windows 7 and a replacement hard drive. It took 9 days to get the recovery media because someone forgot to add my apartment number to the address. When I called to ask about the drive, they said there had been an error and it will be shipped out that day. I finally get the drive, install Windows 8 and all the Lenovo drivers, and in the end, I can't activate Win 8 because my activation code that came with the computer is only good for Windows 7. I call back to see if they can send me the correct installation media, and it's $69 now. Look i'm in medical school, I really need a computer that works. My computer is still under warranty, doesn't that count? I paid my extra money for the extended warranty, but it seems that deal is no good today. Any tricks on getting the correct installation media mailed to me? Are there work-arounds for activating Win8.1? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... When I took my computer off my desk the other day in order to carry it to my work, I found out that the lid had cracked, just underneath the Lenovo brand name, so the front part of the lid comes off and I can see the screen between. I went into my local Lenovo ThinkCenter and asked them to repair this problem, but they said this kind of damage is not covered by the warranty. I stand by it that this is a case of material weakness and it ought to be covered. The product simply doesn't correspond to what is promised. Also, I'm afraid that the crack may have caused one of the WiFi antennas to break, besides further impacting the structural integrity of the computer. The computer had never fallen, been hit nor has any it been exposed to any kind of impact. It is also only 2 months old. Of course, this is hard to prove, but there are no other signs of damage on the exterior, which would be the case if it had indeed fallen. And this is a Thinkpad, they're supposed to be able to withstand a certain degree of impact anyway. My X200 went through some seriously rough jungle and never had any problem. The reason I had bought another Thinkpad after my X200 - despite a below-average screen resolution and an above-average price - was their superior customer support. If my issue is not dealt with properly, if it cannot be repaired for free and within a couple of working days, this will be my last ever Lenovo. With both, I get the led light beside the camera On, but the instead of the output of the camera, I get this:

I made some research and found that the camera's privacy setting might be set to Private in the Lenovo Settings app. I didn't have that app, so I downloaded it from the Windows store. However, the app doesn't have a camera settings section:

I reaseached more and found that one reason it's not showing up in the Lenovo settings is that the drivers might be missing. However, checking the device manager, I found the drivers installed and all look fine.

I don't know where  to move from here. Any ideas will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

I saw few people have problem with this, It was **bleep** hard for me to find what was wrong with my laptop, It just lost its power (instant power-off) from time to time, It was like that for like a half a year, I couldn't figure what was wrong with it. It was totally clean inside and wasn't overheating ,ran all the tests- all was fine, battery also was fine, so is power supply and power module. The thing that fixed it- Was Changing CPU thermal compound, it had dried out really bad and was causing this gremlin.. Even though I didn't believe that it could be the problem because it didn't had overheating issues. Spent $1 on the compound from ebay and the laptop has been fine for over 2months now.In case anyone has the same problem or comes up when searching this post- that's the thing that will fix it even if it sounds weird.

I have three Dell Lattitudes with powered eSata ports. I purchased a sata/power cable to SATA interface hoping to use a SSD or 2.5" hard drive.
However although there is power going to the drive, it is not recognised on boot nor in Windows 10 x64.
There are no drivers missing in Device Manager. The SSD/HDD are all recognised and working using USB to SATA adapters.

Can any one help please?
Is there a missing Driver?
There is nothing in the BIOS I can see that I can turn on ... everything is enabled.

Thanks

Hey so I have had this computer for about 3 months. It has worked perfectly fine the whole time. I had a similar model, U530, before this that worked great (it broke because of an accident on my part) as well.  However, today I was watching the internet and it looked like the monitor quickly shut off for a second. I moved the screen forward slightly after it had come back on and the computer suddenly shut off.  It will not come back on. When it is only using the battery the power button will not light up. When I plug in the power adapter, the power button will light up and turn off every second or so, but nothing else happens, no fan, no hard drive spinning etc... Is there any other way to diagnose this? I tried the manual but there was no information on light patterns or any precautions if it will not turn on.  I've tried turning unplugging the battery and holding down the power button, but to no avail...

A:Lenovo Edge 15, suddenly powered off and not turning back on

I just ran into this exact issue on my U530 Touch. I was just sitting there using it, unplugged, but the battery not about to die, and it just turns off randomly. When I try to turn it on, the power button lights up for a split second in response to me touching it, but that's all that happens. I've tried both plugged in and not and neither cause much of a reaction. Any ideas?

Lenovo Thinkcentre m92p sff (3227) makes Beep sound when powered on since I updated the bios to the version: 9sjw99usa.exe.Also since I replaced the stock lenovo Fans with Noctua fans it makes a second beep (so 2 beep sounds total and there is a fan error in the bios event log), when I connect back the stock fans it makes only 1 beep again. I dont know if the noctua fans would cause the same behaviour on the older bios version since I replaced the fans after the bios update , but I know that with the old bios version there wasnt any beep on startup with the stock fans.I read somewhere that lenovos can give errors in the bios event log with other fans when their rpms are slower then the original fans rpm were, that doesnt explain the single beep on start up with the stock fans though.I wasnt able to find any older bioses for my model to experiment with them on the lenovo support page only the newest bios is offered for download and I wasnt able to find a way to turn of the self test / beep post on start in the bios. I remember that some oem pc systems had key combination for hidden bios settings, does someone know of such a combination to enable hidden settings for my device, or any other way to turn of the annoying beep sounds?I also replaced the stock PSU  with a Be!Quiet! TFX Power 2 300W Gold + 24 to 14 adapter right after I updated the bios. Bould the first beep on start be because of the new PSU? But how would the System know its not the stock PSU? I... Read more

I have an X220 that recently just had the warranty expire on it, and now the motherboard is shot.  I was wondering if logistically, I could buy an X230, and simply install my old solid state harddrive from the X220, and would the computer function?  If possible, that would be a lot easier than taking the hard drive, having someone back it up, and then reinstalling all of the software and files on the new computer?  Thanks in advance for any help!

A:X220 Hard Drive to New X230

It should work fine. I would run ThinkVantage System Update in case there's some hardware on the X230 that wasn't on the X220, but apart from that you should be good to go.

Hello, I had my X230 Working fine with Win7x64 clean-install on a GPT Msata SSD.  However, I didn't like how my backup program reacted to GPT so I reformatted the drive to MBR and clean installed Win7x64 again.  Now, when I try to go to F1 BIOS/UEFI I get a blank black screen, no cursor.  Nothing happens if I wait.  I also often get the blank screen when trying to boot to Windows or F12.  I have to restart the computer several times to get it to continue the boot process (but it does boot eventually.) Rebooting many times does not get it into the F1 setup though. Escape does not work.  The Lenovo button doesn't work.  Hard-booting (pressing power for 30 seconds without battery) does not work. Going to Setup through F12 doesn't work. I have tried downloading the BIOS update again and flashing it but the utility just says my BIOS is already current, so it won't re-flash. (Any way to force it?) In my previous, GPT, Win7 installation I had the fingerprint reader enabled.  Now I'm wondering if that is causing the problem.  (It is turned off in Windows now, and the Bios asks for a password at boot.  Re-installing the Fingerprint software and resetting the fingerprints didn't help. Can anyone help?________________________________X230 (non-touch) (out of warranty)Win7x64mSata SSD & 500GB HDD (MBR)UEFI boots CSM Legacy mode (no Secure boot)UEFI v2.66 (latest)8GB RamExtended battery (6 months old)My experien... HI, I have just purchased a x230 and from the beginning it is really slow. From the 1st boot it takes lot of time to boot and apart from that it takes ages to access to some document or launch and application. Just by opening the default Google chrome it pops up a window saying that the hard drive is overloaded by a process. I have launched the hard drive test and it says everything is ok But its not just the hard drive. The CPU also goes crazy and usually goes up to 90-100% performance by doing nothing, which makes impossible to do anything. Just to point out that there is just taken out of the box, with nothing installed and my raspberry is faster than this

Hi Viserion,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m really sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 is having performance issues, out of the box.

Ensure that air vents are not blocked and there is a proper air flow. Also, check the speeds at which the fan is spinning.

1. Remove all external devices and restore factory default hardware configurations by uninstalling all non-bundled devices.
2. Power on the machine with AC adapter and battery then check whether the problem still exists.
3. Go to BIOS by tapping F1 while Lenovo logo appears. Choose Config -> Power and ensure the below settings are as recommended.

Intel(R) SpeedStep technology [Enabled]
Mode for AC [Maximum Performance]
Mode for Battery [Maximum Performance]
Scheme for AC [Maximum Performance]
Scheme for Battery [Maximum Performance]

Then press F9 [Save and Exit].
4. Ensure Power Manager is configured correctly. Open Power Manager, Click Switch to: "Basic", Click "Power Plan" tab, Select "Maximum Performance", Press Apply then click Ok.
5. Bootup and press F8 to enter Safe Mode to check if the bootup speed is normal.
6. Input "msconfig" and click the tab "Startup" to disable all. Reboot and then shut down. If problem resolved, narrow down to specific startup file.
7. Run a complete virus scan.
8. Run Lenovo Solution center diagnostics and check if there is any hardware failure.
9. Run Lenovo system update and Windows update.

Hope this helps! Post back if issue persis... Read more

I recently purchased an x230 and everything is perfect but the battery fit.  It moves up and down slightly.  I know there are many posts in the lenovo forums for all different models that the battery fits lose in "x" model and solutions of putting paper / foam / tape to make the battery fit tighter.   What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually had the problem fixed by lenovo.  I've read a few posts where a user has had the base piece of the case replaced (where the battery fit's into) and that has solved the problem.  I'm still within my return period on my x230 and am awaiting a call back from tech support to see if there is anything they will do but I don't think I will keep it if they can't fix it.   I'm just curious has anyone actually had luck by replacing the base piece.  From what i've read a replacement battery hasn't worked for anyone.  Also, I know everyone says its by design for thermal purposes but I haven't actually seen any official confirmation of this from lenovo.   Thanks.

A:Battery Loose / Battery wiggle in x230 and LENOVO ...

As a follow up, I'm just curious if this is a widespread issue?  Anyone have loose battery in their x230 / x220?  I'm not talking about it falling out...but just a few millimeters of wiggle room.  Basically when i pick mine up or place it down, I can feel / hear the battery move.  I'm just trying to get an idea if this is a real problem or thats just how every thinkpad is.  I called support and they are sending someone to replace the base panel and we'll see if that fixes it.  I'll update this post when it get's replaced.   Edit* I also asked the lenovo support rep if they had heard of this issue and they said no, never.  I don't see how this is possible as if you do a google search for thinkpad loose battery there are many results.

I'm baffled that for some reason, on my T530, my DVD drive D: shows as "Powered Off." I can right-click the drive and it shows me a 'Power On' option, but clicking it does nothing. If I hover my mouse over drive D, it says: 'drive is powered off, to power on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive.' That also does nothing. Also, my 'battery stretch' is off, so it does not appear to be a power setting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
