Failing services/ Explorer/Programs on start up

Q: Failing services/ Explorer/Programs on start up

Hey everyone...

My New Viao thats just 2 weeks old got the best of. It currently have Vista business.

It all started when I was downloading a movie that required Quicktime. I installed quick time and restarted the labtop. After logging into desktop. i received "explorer has stopped working". i was not able to log on to my desktop from then on. when i would open the task manager i would recieve errors. i wasnt able to restart explorer.

i restarted the computer is safe mode with cmd. did a sfc scan.
it told me that it was 99% complete but it was not able to fix all the corrupted files. i then did a chkdsk scan, and re-did the sfc scan. same out come. i have the CBS log to see which files it couldn't fix.

Now every time i log onto desktop, everything starts failing,
"windows live mseeneger stopped working, "host process for windows services stopped working" , 'windows media player stopped working" my Internet explored disappeared and i get a "Iexploror is not a valid win32 application". It cant install the drivers when i insert a USB key. i even get the blue screen of death at times.

I did a system restore and it didnt help. i tried to repair windows through my vista cd, and it didnt detect anything ot repair. I'm really stumped on this. I do know that everything works in safe mode.

i have the file i got from System file checker, i didnt want to post it, theres alot of text!

Preferred Solution: Failing services/ Explorer/Programs on start up

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi folks,

I think I'm infected or have a serious problem with my Vista OS.

I was logged on recently when I noticed my Avast was no longer running. Trying to enable the protection again failed (no message).
I tried manually starting the Avast service and it failed with the error 'Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion'
I also noticed that I had no internet access and a whole bunch of other services failed to start (including Windows Firewall).
The next thing I tried was a system restore (as an update was done recently I used the one before that).
This got me back the internet but no firewall or avast.
I ran CCleaner (I know now that I should probably not have and asked for help first but I'm new to this kind of thing).
I tried Malwarebytes but it kept finding an object and then immediately crashed.
After reading many posts/topics I didn't find any common posts that would indicate that I could find a common solution and fix it myself.
Many posts recommended taking a few logs so I tried to run DDS and GMER. All crashed while running.
I then tried the Microsoft rootkit indentifier. This also gave a lot of problems. Blank screens, crashes but eventually told me that CMD.exe was causing a problem before crashing one more time.

Lastly I went into safe mode and was able to run DDS, GMER and Malwarebytes. For GMER I had to unclick devices for it to run (didn't like the shadow protect driver it seems).

When my computer starts the Windows XP theme is replaced with the classic and after im signed in I have no internet connection and sometimes no audio. I checked my system logs and noticed a lot of services failed to start. When I go into services.msc a lot of the services set to automatic weren't running and WebClient is stuck in "stopping". When I start the themes service my xp theme returns and the same with Windows Audio. To regain internet access I have to go into task manager and end the svchost.exe process(es) under LOCAL SERVICE, then go into services.msc and first start DHCP Client and then WebClient. When online using internet explorer(8) once in a while a new window will open to a random site or advertisement. Once IE wouldn't connect and then just closed by itself. When I ran GMER i stopped my antivirus program and my firewall (i didnt receive any alerts) but I left IE running (three windows) and all turned white and froze, I tried opening task manager but it wouldn't open and when I hit ctrl + alt + delete only my background showed and my computer froze. I am running Avast! Antivirus protection and Sygate Personal Firewall on my computer. The AVG browser plugins are enabled in IE. I have Windows XP Pro SP3. It looks like the same problem that Tibasco is having.

It appears that you have two antivirus programs installed and running, avast! and AVG. While this may seem like better protection, they can actually conflict with one another and cause system instability or even system hangs. Please choose one to keep and uninstall the other via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. I suggest uninstalling AVG.

I need to see all 3 logs in order to help you. I need to see the Attach.txt log, and a gmer log.

Hi, *trying* to fix my dad's laptop. He's been receiving BSODs the past couple of days, but I haven't been able to get the crash code, I'll try to add it later. I've attached the .zip with the crashlogs/system data.

Before the BSOD, he gets some errors in the event viewer, where:

The [EXAMPLE] service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

He gets about 10 errors over about 10, maybe 15 minutes.
The BSODs started on the 11/08/16. No new hardware has been installed, nor software.

Yesterday, I ran into some problems with my Adobe products, Photoshop, After Effects, etc. wherein the program would begin to load, the splash screen would appear, but the program would give the "x has stopped working" error message and close down. It would always occur when the splash screen showed "Initializing", near the end of the load. I ended up uninstalling CS6, installing the trial for their 2015 product, CC, and this showed the same problem. I contacted adobe and they were less than helpful.

I noticed that there were some other programs not opening. Namely a few games, and Blizzards Battle.net client. Again, a loading splash screen would appear, and during loading it would close down, except without an error message this time.

I decided to download MalwareBytes, but this wouldn't load either. I tried downloading MalwareBytes Chameleon, to try and end any processes that might prevent MalwareBytes from opening. It did open, but failed to fix it. I rebooted in safe mode, and both Battle.net and MalwareBytes opened fine, however MalwareBytes didnt find any threats. (Edit: Photoshop also worked in safe mode)

I reinstalled graphics drivers, which had no effect. I thought there may be corrupt windows files, so I used sfc /scannow to try and correct some ... Read more

I recently upgraded my computer to windows 7, and with that came a full wipe (I was running XP before). Because of this, I need to redownload a lot of the programs I had before, but I've been running into a problem. The installers for programs all fail to start.

I can see them in the process menu of the task manager, but they get to a seemingly random memory usage and then just stops. the same program will always stop within about 5 K memory usage of where it stopped before. (ex. MapleStory always stops between 4713-4718, and another program always stopped at 1715-1720)

The only programs I can get to start are the ones I run from CDs. I did get google chrome downloaded and installed no problem.

I tried running in selective start up mode, but it didn't fix anything.

A major example of this is maplestory. I've tried multiple mirrors and the downloader from nexon but none work.

any help appreciated

I am running Windows Vista (32-bit) and when I tried to open Google Chrome I got the message "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the Event Log for more information". When I tried to open the Event Viewer from the start menu nothing happened. I subsequently discovered that the start menu appeared to be locked or frozen, as I couldn't click on anything. In order to use the start menu again I logged off via Ctrl+Alt+Del and got a message that said there were "too many other files in use by 16-bit programs".

I've worked around the Chrome issue by downloading it again off another browser (without uninstalling) and it appears to be ok. But I had a similar issue when Windows Update wasn't working and programs weren't opening and the start menu was subsequently locking.

I'm assuming there's some broader issue with my system given the issues I'm having opening certain programs/services from the start menu and it then becoming locked/unusable.

Has anyone had the same issues and is there a solution?

On my laptop, I recently started having the peculiar issue that when I tried to attach files to my e-mails, the "Browse" button that should have opened an explorer window did not open one at all. I tried it with various e-mail accounts and all of them did not work.

Then, I tried using a "save image as" to see if that part of the explorer was also not responding, and it was not. Lastly, I checked another program I had that would need to browse through explorer.exe and it also failed to run. If I just try to browse files regularly by clicking on the folder and looking through them, it works just fine. It's just other programs are not getting through to be able to access the files.

I am at a loss as for what to do about it. The last thing I changed about my computer was updating video drivers, and there's no reason as to why that would have any influence (not to mention the update I did was about 2 weeks before the explorer started acting up). Also, I do want to make it clear that it is not the "browser" at fault, but the "browse" function that connects to my computer. Any and all help would be appreciated.

First, have you used any programs lately, like Advanced System Care, etc. Anything new that was done before this started happening.
Second, download Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computerthe free one. Run a full scan on all accounts and post results.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2.

I have two user accounts, neither of which were password protected.

Recently I used msconfig to shut down some start up programs and services I did not want or need (so I thought). Now when I rebooted the first time everything was fine, except for that it wanted a password when I switched users. I had not set passwords and would log in without one when rebooted. I went and set passwords for the user accounts which works when switching users most of the time. Other times the passwords for both accounts are wrong.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A:system restore failing, internet explorer won't open, unable to add/remove programs??

The assumption by many...that the effects of malware can be easily overcome and the system returned to happier days...just is not true.

In addition to file damage which may have directly inflicted by the malware...there is always the possiblity that key files have been damaged during efforts to troubleshoot and remove known/detected malware itesm.

System manufacturer and model, please?

Do you have any Windows installation CDs?

Hi. So, the wonderful people here have helped me out before, and I'm hoping they can do the same again!

About two weeks ago, I had an incident where randomly, my laptop started typing gibberish instead of the actual keys I was pressing. For example, on pressing "e" I got something like "ce3d" or something. It did this in my browser, in Skype, in Windows (password entry and search) and in MS Word, so I figured it must be a keyboard error. I'm not exactly the carefullest of people so it didn't seem unreasonable that a crumb or something had gotten in to the keyboard and was disrupting things. I tried various fixes - vacuuming my keyboard, attempting to download new keyboard drivers from Toshiba and running MBAM, but to no avail. Eventually I gave up and went to bed. Lo and behold, come morning, everything was working as normal again, and I carried on life as usual.

Then, yesterday, I randomly got BSODed. I made a backup, because I was pretty convinced it was a warning sign... Read more

Hi,I have bad news for you From your log, I can see it is a lost case - game over situation already. It's clearly here that you are dealing with a File infector, and I'm pretty sure it's Virut, this on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. A format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution. You may want to read this why:Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel? So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/adva...all-format.html

I am JayPeez and I am having a problem with the programs in my Start Menu. It all started when I open a web page file (which is in Mozilla and is stored in my flash drive) with Internet Explorer. The next thing I know is that all my file folders in my flash drive have an Internet explorer extension so their icon appears to that of the Internet explorer. The same thing happens to all my programs in my Start menu. Whenever I want to open a program, the Internet explorer browser will be displayed so I was not able to open the program I want. The programs can only be opened appropriately when I click the Safe Run. However, I still can open my programs by accessing it through its file location and in there I can open it successfully. However, it is tiring to do so. And even I was able to open it right, its icon that is displayed in my task bar is still that of Internet explorer.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem. I have tried everything with the Control Panel and Help and Support, yet I still was not able to solve it.

I'm having two problems and I suspect they are related. There are come programs that simply execute a long time after the icon is clicked. By delayed, I mean I click the .exe icon for the program and nothing happens...Then 5-10 minutes later, the program I forgot about runs. What's going on there? I also have this super annoying problem where if I right click a program, explorer freezes, sometimes even crashes. I have booted windows in safe mode and neither of these problems seem to happen. Do I really have to go through each and every third party shell extension? There's hundreds of them. I really don't want to spend all day on this because of somebody's sloppy work. A quick solution to both problems would be appreciated.

Hello, and thank you for the free support!

I've been having issues with our computer for the past week and a half or so, where we try to run a program, and get an error message stating that it can't find the location--this has been many programs, not just one. Sometimes, we don't get the message, but the program simply never starts. I noticed it initially when I saw that the color scheme had changed from the custom color I had (in the shortcut-startup bar at the bottom of the screen) back to the blue Windows gradient. When I went to check it out, it couldn't find the files in the control panel to open the properties. Also, we have had Windows Explorer itself crash a few times. I am assuming that this is all related somehow. The problem will generally temporarily resolve with a restart, although at least once I had to power down with the button because the computer couldn't find the files to restart through the start menu. I have run a couple of different spyware programs--HitMan Pro (I don't have the paid version, so I couldn't fix anything it found), and MalWareBytes. MalwareBytes found and fixed something last week, but I'm afraid I don't know what it was at this point.

I'm wondering what I should do first--I'm hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows at least for a bit, as I don't have any external devices large enough to do a full backup--I've been manually backing up things like photos onto a smaller externa... Read more

The problem started with Windows Defender service stopped (and not letting to start it with "Access Denied") and McAfee requesting reinstallation. AdAware and SUPERAntiSpyware could not run. When I switched to Safe Mode, after few seconds the desktop disappeared. Access to Task Manager remains, but attempts to run explorer.exe manually fail with the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions." I am able to get to the Computer Management trough Task Manager>Desktop>My Computer icon, but properties of the groups and users are not accessible.

The same situation (Explorer not running and limited access to other programs through Task Manager) is observed in both Normal and Safe mode, also in the Safe mode's Administrator account. I was able to run a special version of SUPERAntiSpyware from a flash drive. MBAM does not work. HJT quits after a second or so after scan start without any report.

Currently the computer is disconnected from the network, I am using laptop to communicate with you. Hope very much for your assistance.

I was able to run the recommended scanners from the flash drive. The reports are attached here.

I am in an urgent situation related to my work. Please advice, and I will be forever yours.

Explorer is no longer working properly in a few ways. Programs often take a long time to start and display ?(Not responding)? on the their top window frames. Right click menu sometimes takes a long time to appear while explorer freezes. The explorer window itself is sometimes quite long to change the display when I change folder (this is far from often, but happens).

The first window to appear when we click on the Start Menu, the one with the large icons, is usually OK, but sometimes it does the same as the ?All Programs? second window;
Here, the folders do not open and on Task Manager I can watch explorer taking up all the CPU available resources immediately after I pass to ?All Programs?;
However, if I click ?Back? (explorer stops abnormally using all CPU resources);
Then I click ?All Programs? again and the previously clicked folder is now already open, but explorer is again up with CPU resources, so if now I click on a subfolder or on another folder, it all repeats again.
At this moment I don?t have backups to install.

I have read the tutorial about Start Menu, and also another post at Right-click item in Start Menu = Explorer crash. I followed this post and disabled all explorer extensions, but it didn?t make any difference, so my problem must not be the same as the one on that post. I wonder what it is. I am convinced it must be something external to explorer that affects its performance, but I can?t discover what it is, so that I?d be very thankfu... Read more

Hi all.

I'm working on this computer and I'm quite dumbfounded. It's running XP Home and it won't install Norton Anti-virus, or Ad-aware for that matter.

I've ran the online Norton scan and it comes up with 0 results for a virus. Every time I try to run the Norton setup it will just stop. When I run the Ad-aware setup it comes up with the error "Error 1327. Invalid Drive G:W" Now the W has a horizontal line running through it.

In the windows explorer the address bar will have this same symbol. "C:WDocuments and SettingsWUserWStartMenu"
It has replaced all \'s with a W symbol.

I think this is probably the same reason that Norton won't install.

Any idea what this symbol is and how to get it back to normal?

Hello everyone, I have a combination of problems...

Originally, my only problem was that right-clicks in a folder other than desktop caused windows explorer to hang and then crash. So I fixed it using shellexviewer, as was recommended here: Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers.
I disabled a bunch of non-windows contextmenuhandlers, and that seemed to solve it.

After that my start menu "All programs" bar stopped working. It doesn't display anything, and the start menu freezes, and eventually crashes windows explorer. (Also screwed up the start menu search in the same way, but sometimes it decides to work) I tried re-enabling all the things I had disabled with shellexviewer, but the start menu was still screwed up.

I tried using system restore, but the problems are all back, and of course the iexplorer freeze then crash r-click problem is back as well. I don't know what to do...

I should also mention that just before this trouble started, I rebuilt the icon cache because no icons were showing in folders.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Computer browser service starts/stops several times in a few minutes.
The Multimedia Class Scheduler service starts/stops every 3 or 4 minutes.

I just recently built a new PC and I'm having some Vista errors.

Specs are as follows:

MOBO: ASUS M4A79T Deluxe - AMD 790FX
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4 GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600
GPU: Radeon 4890 x2
PSU: 850W

Hard Drive was clean before hand so it's a clean install.

Currently running Vista Ultimate x64

The problems I've been running into are as follows:

ALT+TAB is no longer functioning. Upon alt+tabbing the programs currently open to switch to will pop for a second and disappear. If I hold down alt+tab the window currently open will flicker and the pop-up with other programs will flicker in and out as well. There's currently no way to alt-tab.

It worked for a few days then just randomly stopped. I haven't uninstalled the programs I added after it stopped functioning to attempt to resolve this because it doesn't seem like it would help. All I've added recently is mIRC and Ventrilo.

Aero is still working normally. My keyboard is working perfectly fine.

I've attempted to switch between themes to solve the problem with no luck. If I switch to classic windows alt+tab functions normally and if I go back to vista alt+tab no longer functions.

Second I've been having a problem where all programs I open will not actually become active. They will not go to the top of the queue as far as it goes to viewing an open program. For instance if I open my web browser it will remain behind whatever program I currently have open. If I open the ... Read more

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask as I don't really know what is causing the failure, so I'm asking here.

I've been having some irritating issues. I've had this computer for over a year and a half, and I didn't have issues with it until around April.

I'll browse for a while on Firefox or Chrome or both, then everyone stops loading. It's like someone hit the pause button. No error pages, no failed to load red x images, just blank pages and loading icons. If I close Firefox and attempt to open it, it'll tell me it's already open. This doesn't happen for Chrome, it just opens a blank page. If I attempt to shut down, I'll sit twiddling my thumbs for about three minutes [sometimes longer] before I see my system tray close icons, and my computer finally starts logging me off. It logs me off for about five minutes, although sometimes much shorter. My computer restarts and it's perfectly fine. For a while.

Most of the time my torrent program fails at the same time and I can't close it no matter what I try.

I've scanned for viruses multiple times with multiple programs. I've uninstalled both both browsers and used them individually until one broke, and also have uninstalled and started using a new torrenter.

I'm using Vista Home Premium SP1 on an XPS 420.

So is there a way to fix this?

A:Error 1068 failed to start when trying to start services

Yes, possibly possible! What are the names of the services you are dealing with?

Double click the service - go to the "Dependencies" tab - Check the service names list under "This service depends on the following system components" and then make sure that all the services listed there are already started.

For example, if you're trying to start a service which has dependency on "Windows firewall" service, you need to first make sure Windows firewall service is STARTED.

Posted this on Windows support community but with no response so far, found these forums that seem to be very active so was hoping to get a little help.

Have been having trouble with my PC lately. I've searched for answers a few times already and although others have had similar problems I haven't been able to find anything particularly helpful as of yet.

About a week ago I started having a problem after booting into Windows 7. Programs wouldn't load for the first minute or so. I could click the icon in the taskbar (e.g. Chrome) and it would flash momentarily then disappear and not load up, though Task Manager would show the process was running. After a little while the problem would stop and eventually everything would load fine, though once this caused my computer to become unresponsive (though the mouse would still move and I could open the start menu) after the programs crashed and I couldn't kill the processes in task manager. On the next boot, I was prompted to run CHKDSK and did so, with no errors found.

Generally, though, after 2 minutes or so my computer operated without issue, though I did notice that it didn't seem to enter into Sleep Mode properly as normally the fans on my computer would turn off, but had stopped doing so.

This was followed by a BSOD I just got with the message:
