Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

Q: Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

ASUS Notebook G60Vx Series

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
A few days ago my internet suddenly stopped working. I plugged in the ethernet cord and everything worked fine. Checking the properties in the device manager showed the device was working properly, I also tried resetting it to make sure it was enabled but it did not work.

Upon troubleshooting, the "Windows Network Diagnostic" said the problems was that the Wireless adapter was not turned on. Using the switch on the front of the laptop as well as the function keys does nothing. Usually a graphic pops up showing if the WiFi is on or off, changinging transparent to show the WiFi is disabled. Now when I turn the switch on it always appears transparent, effectively going from off to off

So I know the computer reads both the function keys and the switch on the front but both methods never actually turns the adapter on. I just finished a system restore and nothing has changed

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Preferred Solution: Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Maybe the switch or adapter is defective. Some other ideas ...

Do you have an ASUS utility to also turn the wireless on/off? (I have an HP utility on one of my laptops that will individually control the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the physical switch is on.)

In Device Manager right click on the adapter - Properties - Advanced tab. Sometimes there is a Property in there that allows turning the adapter on/off.

If the card is easily accessible through a cover on the laptop's bottom remove and carefully and firmly replace the card several times to fix any potential looseness or corrosion problems.

Sounds like you need a driver update for your Wifi Adapter i would go to the ASUS site and check if they have any updates for your particular machine

If that doesn't fix the issue you might need to do a system restore to where it was working also check if the protocol has been changed from Wifi to fixed connection

Please help me out.

A:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

My PC works great most of the time. But...I wanted to install ASUS Smart Doctor on my PC and I get the error "GPU not detected" ! I have updated and cleaned and reinstalled my Graphics driver many times. When I check my "device mannager" it tells me my Graphics Card is installed and working properly ! So which is it ? I can ignore all this and go on about my bussiness, but like today, I got a BSOD because I tried to watch a video using the wrong player. It restarts fine and I can watch any movie I have on this PC, which is a lot. Its these every now and then problems that drive me crazy. Any suggestions ? Thanks,

Hi all, first post here, I am simply stumped.

This issue is on my girlfriend's desktop PC. She's running XP, but I'm not sure which version.

- It connects to the Internet via EVDO Aircard. That connection is fine, rock solid (actually much better than my laptop with the same model aircard!)

- We have the Nintendo USB WiFi adaptor connected to another USB port, to share the established Internet connection with our Wii.

The problem is this:
The USB WiFi adaptor is stuck in Acquiring Network Address mode, after running just fine for a couple months!
- I have tried ipconfig/release and renew, I have tried going into the device manager and uninstalling/reinstalling that one thing.
- when I run ipconfig alone, the internet connection comes up with a normal result, but "Local Area Connection 4" (now 5 after the reinstall) comes up with all zeroes.
- when I try to "repair" the connection it gives me an error, I believe it says it cannot get an IP address. But I'm not looking for it to get an IP address - the Wii has a MAC address, and I would think the Nintendo servers would have given it an IP if it needed one, no?

I'm not a power user here, and all the solutions I've found in my search so far, I've either already tried or are over my head.

Anyone out there?
Thanks!!!
Dave

Yesterday, i upgraded my mobo from an abit kn9 sli to this Asus M2N Sli Deluxe Wifi edition. The first problem i encountered was during windows setup when it asked me to insert a disk called Nvidia network bus installation disc #1, which of course i didnt have. I clicked cancel, and the screen started acting up, but windows eventually installed. Everything works fine except the two lan ports. I went to the add hardware wizard and it says that the device cannot start (code 10). Maybe i need some drivers? i already installed all the drivers that came with the mobo cd. I'm lost for ideas.

A required device isn't connected or cane be accessed.
And on Windows 8.1 it shows
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
there is a strange thing ...after every 2-3 days the display works with lines and bars but OnLY for Once and if I turn off system or restart it again no display for 2-3 days. When display worked I used Command prompt to take backup and whole process done without any problem. But System doesn't boot even on Win7 and Win 8.1, I tried External output with HDMI but on external display it blinks, no idea whether its hdmi port or motherboard. When display doesn't shows up, fan works and so the HDD and wifi LEDs. Here no display means nothing at all, black like System is off.... but power light ,fan , all the LEDs are working. I tried swapping RAMs and press and hold power button method ,removed battery too, nothing worked. Plz reply if there is anyone who can help me here.

Hi - Using IBM T42 with External Monitor. When booting Win XP Home SP3, both monitors work, then laptop monitor goes blank. External monitor works fine. I have tried everything I can think of - resetting displays, changing ATI Radeon mobility 7500 driver, disconnecting external monitor, Function key combinations, booting in safe mode. Nothing works. But when the laptop boot starts, the laptop monitor works for a few minutes then shuts down. Seems like a switch is not working properly.
Any ideas as to how to solve this problem. And the laptop monitor was working fine until a few days ago, the last time I used it alone, i.e., separate from the external monitor.

Many thanks in advance.

Being that the ibm t42thinkpad is an older model its very possible that the whole screen will need replaced as the ribbon cable, inverters, or backlights might have gone bad.replacing the whole screen might be easier to do than trying to find the individual parts needed.

I recently got a new laptop.  I'm not sure if this problem has always existed on it, or if it is new.  However, I am noticing two things:

1.  If I try to go to my bank's web site (www.peoples.com) it will not load.  On Chrome it says ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED, on IE it says "The Page cannot be displayed" and on Firefox the tab spins as if it's loading but the page never comes up.

2.  If I try to go to Staples Easy Rebates site, I get mixed results.  (URL: https://rebate.staples.com/staples/tracksearch.action).  On Chrome, I believe it errors out but the URL goes in a loop and tries to connect.  If I look at the URL I believe it is trying to redirect to an error page.  On IE I get the same issue.  On Firefox, the page loads.

On other machines, these pages load fine.  Thinking it could potentially be a router issue (bought a new router at a similar time), I brought this laptop to another location and had the same issues.  I've also run Malwarebytes and Anti-virus, etc.  At the moment, I don't suspect it to be that type of issue (but could be wrong).

I believe the network/internet settings are the original default settings.  I didn't set any custom proxy servers or anything of the sort.  I tried searching the issue before creating this post, but since my problem is unique (at least to the two sites mentioned above) I couldn't find similar situations.  I'm at... When i plug in my memory stick at home and click on computer and on removable disk, it doesnt want to show me my files. The program quits responding and I have to take out my memory stick. Sometimes, it will show me my files but it won't let me access them. It will take forever to act like its loading and then it won't and "Computer" says it is not responding. Is it my device? I bought it Windows Vista compatible. I dont understand why I cant get to my files. After removing the stick so my computer will go back to being responsive, the program "My computer" will not recognize the device again. I have tried all my USB ports, they do the same thing. I have restarted my computer and it does the same thing. I need help!!!

Obviously its not the device. It has something to do with your computer.

When you plug in the device just let it sit for a minute, vista should go and get the proper drivers/firmware for the device.

Watch you tray in the bottom right hand side of the screen. Does a box pop up when you plug in the device.

Do you have a firewall installed if so which one?

I am not sure exactly at what point it happened but I recently found that the touch screen on my Elite X2 1011 was not working. The pen still functions normally. When checking the pen and touch settings I can only configure the pen settings and only "Pen support" is listed in view pen and touch settings. The touch screen used to work in both the original Windows 8.1 and then also after upgrading to Windows 10. There have been no error messages and the event logs do not seem to indicate any problems; it is as though the machine has just forgotten it is a touch screen. I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling both Windows 10, and going back to Windows 8.1 to no avail. I really loved this little device but ease of use is cut rather drastically without the touch functionality. Has anyone else had a problem like this and have a solution? Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I just got a new Asus Transformer Laptop (Windows 8.1) and am having trouble with it even locating my wifi.

I can see other's that are in my area but not mine. My partner's Asus laptop can find it fine with no issues. There is no Ethernet cable point on the laptop either to try that. I have reset the computer, turned wifi on/off, restored that modem (netgear) back to factory settings to no avail. I am currently using my mobile phone as a personal hotspot and that recognised it quickly. I don't know why my laptop would need to do any updates given that I got it yesterday but it that a possibility??

I am not computer savvy in ANY way to please use simple terms.

It's so upsetting getting a new laptop and not being able to use it.

Please help!

Catherine.

Probably your new laptop is trying to use only one or a limited number of wifi channels', whereas the netgear is using yet another. Try this http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1848693/laptop-detect-home-wireless-netwrok.html

So my laptop has started to freeze a minute or two after start up even though it was working fine a few hours ago. I was sat talking to a friend over facebook chat when my laptop started 'screaming' with a really high pitched noise, I had to turn it off to stop it.

When I restarted it and booted it back up it said it was defragging something (it was a while ago and I cant remember what it said) after that I logged in and now it freezes after a couple of minuets.

I've tried system restoring it and using the built in memory repair and it still wont work. However once I disabled all the non microsoft services it boots up and doesnt freeze untill I try to open a program.

I can start it in safe mode but thats about it. I've spent the past couple of hours searching for a solution but can't find one, so ay help will be much appritiated

By the sounds of it your internet service providers main DNS servers are having issues or, network issues. It could be due to your ISP doing network maintenance on their part as well. What can you do? Well instead of using the ISP's DNS you can use a public Google DNS. Inside your router change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 However, I don't recommend that you permanently change them from your ISP.

I have sort of an odd problem. I have a desktop computer that is connect to the internet wirelessly. Everything works fine there. I also have an xbox360 connected to the desktop via an Ethernet cable. I use this connection primarily to stream movies from my computer to the xbox. Today in the middle of a movie the movie stopped playing and gave me an error saying xbox isn't connected to the computer any more.
I checked the physical connection and everything was fine. I looked at my desktop (running windows xp) and noticed my LAN connection wasn't properly running. It said I have limited or no connectivity. So I tried repairing it, renewing it, disabling and re-enabling it. Nothing worked. In fact I get this error: "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I also noticed I have a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address, if that helps at all:
EDIT: Forgot to mention I also reinstalled the driver for the LAN card.

Hello again ,
I am really happy with windows seven but for one problem. Since installing win 7 my microphones both the internal and the 3.5 jack mic no longer work. I have used the search function here and it seems to me that many have had a similar problem. It seems that this could be a driver problem. Having said that I cannot see a mic in the harware list but to be honest i wouldn't know what to look for.

I have checked all the mic and sound settings
A search by Asus for a suitable driver showed that only one for Vista 32 bit is available. I have a disc with drivers (see attached) that was supplied with the lap top which originally had vista 32 installed.

My questions are :
Could this be a driver problem ?
Could try to install a vista driver ?
If so where do i look for this driver ( see attached list of folders )
any advice would be appreciated as I need the mic for university conference calls

regards
Scala

A:Asus pro 80 laptop - mic not working

Hi scala,

Is that list of folders on the old Vista disc you mentioned? It's probably better to just get the driver online than try to pull it off the disc. If you are using Windows 7 Professional 32-bit then yes, try the Vista 32-bit driver. If you're using a 64-bit OS, well then try to find a Vista 64-bit driver. Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Hi,

I bought a 'VGA to Composite' cable, similar to the one here and connected this with another cable to my TV, so I have the VGA connection on my laptop connected to the yellow, red and white connections on the TV.

However, I can't seem to get TV-out working on my TV. I tried switching between the different AV channels on my TV, but still doesn't work. I have this Intel TV Wizard software installed on my laptop, I go through the wizard and select composite and my connection, but when I press 'Next', nothing happens... it doesn't go to the next step of the wizard.

Does anyone have any ideas of why I can't get it to work?

Many Thanks,

A:I can't get TV-Out working on Asus X5DIJ Laptop, tried everything!

i was looking at this yesterday on acouple of posts here I answered
AND
to use the VGA output - you need tobe able to select TV out on the PC

I have this Intel TV Wizard software installed on my laptop, I go through the wizard and select composite and my connection, but when I press 'Next', nothing happens... it doesn't go to the next step of the wizard.

I'm not sure what this does - but if its not going to next step - that maybe the issue - so we need to look into that

I tried switching between the different AV channels on my TV,Click to expand...

It should be one of those - do youhave make and model or perhaps a manual - it should tell which AV thos inputs are - it may even be labeled on the TV itself

you can get VGA to Scart, which may work by just using the F key to switch to VGA out

EDIT
I have looked through the manual online at the asus site - nothing on how to set up composite on VGA

This is a long story people so bare with me. Just the other night a program on my ASUS Laptop called 'ASUS Live Update' recommended a few updates for my PC. I allowed the update, and once it was finished downloading all of the updates, it prompted me to restart my PC, so i did. When my laptop loaded up again it said that the update for my USB drivers did not install correctly, and from that point forward, NONE of my USB devices were working anymore. My PC would no longer recognize any USB device that i connected to my computer. I did some research and tried re-installing the drivers, but that didn't work. I tried Microsoft Fix It, that didn't work either. So i called up ASUS and they made me try a few things, and that didn't work either. After I tried everything, they said there is no other solution they can give, but to have me send in the Laptop for repairs, and they want to charge me $150 to get this fix, when it was their program that initially messed up my drivers. If somebody could please help me fix this, i am in desperate need. Thank you so much. -DJN

Hi. I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8. I got it last August and until last week I haven't had any problems with it. Last week, my sound stopped working. It shows that the sound is up all the way on speakers and system sounds, but I am only able to get sound when I plug my headphones into the headphone jack. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A:Sound not working Windows 8 Asus laptop

If sound has stopped working there are few tips you can try.
For help you can see: How to fix Sound and Speaker issues in Windows 8 Step by Step
At first, Make sure that Audio Devices are enabled on your Windows 8 PC. You will have to go through volume icon beside notification area on taskbar and right click on the icon. Further Click on Playback Devices and enable through properties menu box.

If issue is fixed then it is OK, otherwise Update Audio Device Drivers.
If you have set auto install for Windows update on your windows 8 PC the drivers will be updated automatically. After setting never check for updates your Windows couldn't install the updates coming from Microsoft. In this situation go to Device manager and update the Device driver manually.
You can download audio driver from manufacturer (Asus) and install on your PC. The whole process will fix sound issue for sure.

The classic reason for this is encryption key mismatch or possibly MAC filtering on the AP the machine is connecting to. Does this laptop connect to other wireless networks?

Hello,

I bought a new ASUS laptop a week ago. I was just watching something on Netflix and when I tried to decrease/increase the volume with the keyboard controls, it did not work. The mute button does not work either. Is there a way to fix this? I am hoping the three keys (mute/decrease/increase volume) are not working because I am supposed to change some settings.

Thanks for your help in advance,
Sincerely,

Esteban

I have had my ASUS G51VX laptop for a couple years now and it's still going strong. However, just recently the built-in SD card reader has stopped reading cards for some reason. When I pop in a card Windows will make the sound that a USB device has been plugged in and then a couple seconds later it will make the unplugged sound. The "Removable Storage Device" does not show up in Computer. I've tried looking through the Device Manager to find the card reader and re-install the driver, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I suppose it is one of the USB controllers. I've also tried multiple SD cards so I know it's not the card.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi

The trackpad and left/right click buttons on my laptop work fine up to the point when I need to log in to my user profile.

Once in, and Windows is working, they do not respond at all, except to bring the screen back when it has gone to sleep.

Does anybody know what is going on and how to resolve this problem?

Thanks

ignore that it says dell, the principle is the same, what you want is to try to reset it all , adjusting settings up and down to see if you can kick start it back up

Hi. One moment all was fine - next, no sound... Can anyone please help?

My small external speakers connect via a USB port and an audio jack plugged into the speakers/headphone socket (both needed - I guess the USB connection is just to power them?). After months of no problems, when I connect the jack, there is no sound. The laptop's internal speakers are pathetic, but still work OK when I unplug the speakers again.

If I try the external speakers on a different (Dell) laptop, they work just fine. If I plug headphones into the Asus laptop speakers/headphones jack, the headphones work OK too.

So I am now just confused! My Asus laptop is suddenly OK with the headphones, but not the speakers?? There were no drivers to install by the way for the speakers to work. No problems show in Device Manager and all volume settings are at Max right now...

The laptop has Realtek HD Audio installed (and I run Windows 7 x64). Microsoft 'Fixit' (as recommended elsewhere here) found nothing wrong.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

A:External USB Speakers suddenly not working on my Asus laptop

Sounds like a USB port power problem in the laptop. The laptop's sound works OK and the speakers work OK on a different PC.

As they are USB powered, have you tried a different USB Port? Is there any other USB devices also connected to the PC?

Hello all, If anybody can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
As the forum title states. Sound card sings but speakers do not.
Here is the additional Info that may help you, to help me

Motherboard Name Asus G1000Sn Series Notebook
CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 1200 MHz (6 x 200)
DDR2 CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 1200 MHz (6 x 200)
OS Name Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
Video Adapter nVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS (Asus)
Realtek ALC888/1200 @ Intel 82801HBM ICH8M - HD Audio Controller PCI
Hitachi 7.2k RPM 200GB Disk

Drivers are as up to date as they can possibly get. Audio drivers are 2010 drivers.
Earphones in sound works.
EX speakers plugged in via 3.5mm jack, They will work perfectly.

Second Hard Disk, (The original 120GB that came with laptop, Vista home image)
When this is plugged in the laptop speakers work perfectly.

So my understanding is the sound card and the speakers are functional.
Normal settings checked, not muted, hardware and software for speakers is not disabled.

Device manager has no conflicts (no red or yellows showing)

When i first addressed this issue with asus, laptop got sent back, the loaded the std image, works fine, tried to load xp, got it working but due to the lack of g1s xp drivers. it was impossible to continue using xp unless i wrote the drivers my self. This i did not know how to do so i loaded Vista ultimate.

The xp limitation is due to Santa Rosa chips in case anybody is won... Read more

Im pretty sure i have all the proper drivers which i downloaded from the support.asus website. I also removed my dvd drive and put it back in and no change.

I upgraded to windows 7 and i found a few other articles saying that their are a few problems with windows 7 not recognizing the drive. So if anyone has had this problem please help.... Thanks

I also tried to update the firmware, but my drive could not be located to do that

Welcome!

Could you please check to see if the drive is recognized at all in the BIOS?

Also, if you have another machine you could test the drive in, that would be great. If not, no big deal.

You can also try updating your chipset drivers and BIOS.

Good luck!

I have a Dell laptop (Win7 Home Premium, 64Bit) and it seems like it always has difficulty connecting to WiFi routers that are using 802.11g. I have a Wireless-N card on my laptop and I would think it would be backwards compatible, right??
I'm the same person, with the same laptop, as this post: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1079721-dns-lookup-failed.html
and all the symptoms that I was trying to solve in that post are relevant again.
At the time that post was made, I lived in an apartment and the modem/router from my cable company was wireless-G and my laptop seemed to experience intermittent DNS problems. I could never REALLY use the internet for very long, but sometimes some websites would seem to load, but usually pictures would have a problem. Other times the seemingly DNS issue would not let me load any websites at all. While I was on vacation I was able to connect perfectly to 2 different WiFi networks. I know for sure that one of them was Wireless-N (not sure about the other one).
Eventually I moved and my new modem/router from my new cable company was Wireless-N. My computer has connected to that network perfectly for months. Now, on vacation again, I tried to connect to a "G" network again and all the old problems came back EXACTLY as they were before.
Is it possible that my Wireless-N card has that much trouble connecting to Wireless-G networks? If so, is there any fix??
I've attached 2 screenshots. One is the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector showi... Read more

A:Wireless-N laptop not working on 802.11g WiFi

The signal is too weak for a reliable connection. Try closer to the router.

The variation in the signal strength indicates probable incorrect driver or defective adapter or router (or wireless access point). Try the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site. If that does not work right try the driver directly from Intel's site.

If possible check Xirrus with another computer, or another adapter, to see if the router is having difficulty maintaining a constant signal strength (a variation of one or two dBm is OK).
