Remove Modern apps user account in Windows 8

Q: Remove Modern apps user account in Windows 8

Hi I was given these instructions from another forum to show me how to remove unwanted apps from my computer. Problem seems to stem from the fact that I am unable to replicate a certain "caret" into the command, for example: "Get-AppXPackage -User <username> |  Remove-AppxPackage". I highlighted the caret in red that I mean. It says to open Powershell and at then "Type the following command to remove all Modern apps from the system account", but I tried this but because I cannot put in the " | " in the command it only opens another command beginning, for instance:
PS C:\Windows\system32>
Please help, how do I get this to work, there are tons of apps pre-installed on this windows 8 that I simply do not use, I do not have a disk, it came with windows 8 pre-installed.
thanks for any help with this

Preferred Solution: Remove Modern apps user account in Windows 8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:How 2 transfer apps from Admin account to ltd user account

I'd go to Control Panel, Users Account and add a new Standard account. The new name only has to be one character different. The new account should be able to do most things but will be quite limited in making changes to the computer.
How Microsoft Overhauled User Accounts In Windows 8
I'd leave the existing account alone, should always have at least one that has administrative rights. There is an actual Administrator account but it is hidden on purpose.

So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.

Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.

But when I go the "C:\Users\DC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:

If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)

So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:\Users\DC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:

I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error.

Any idea how to remove that "C:\Users\DC" folder?

So, I had a problem this morning regarding the modern apps icons, they were all blank whichever app I ran. Then I tried to fix them following this article: BEST FIX: Windows 10 Store Icon Missing - Appuals.com
But, it just made things worse and now I can't even open Windows Apps, I can't even run sfc /scannow, it fails the verification phase. When I search for, for example, "calculator" in search bar, it finds the app, but it's called: @{Microsoft.WindowsCalculator_10.1601.49... etc When I run it, nothing happens.

It all started when I tried to use the calculator. I pressed the calculator key on my keyboard but the calculator app didn't open. It just flashed on the screen. I tried again but no luck.
I googled and found this. I re-registered the apps and reboot my computer.
Calculator didn't work nor did any other apps. I also discovered that all apps had strange names. For example store is something like:
@{Microsoft.WindowsStore_2015... etc.

I tried re-registering and rebooting again. Trying to open calculator with keyboard gives an error. My OS is not in English but I try to translate it. "You need a new application to open link type calculator."

A:Modern Windows apps broken.

I find when there is a pending update to the modern windows apps they won't work correctly. Then navigate to store and generally can see an update waiting. It then updates and seems to work fine. I've had it before where photos or calculator flash on screen and then disappear. I then see the updates are lurking. So basically a looming update seems to break functionality until you actually go and update.

Hello all,
We have some workstations running Windows 8 that we would like to get upgraded to 8.1. We originally deployed Windows 8 using a customized image with all the Modern UI apps removed, e.g. Mail, Calendar, People, Maps, News, Food & Drink, Health &
Fitness, Reading List, etc. I've run the upgrade on a test machine using "Setup.exe /auto:upgrade" as documented at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/dn744271.aspx and it works; however, all the Modern UI apps are re-installed.
Is there a way to perform this upgrade without all the apps installing, or, at the very least, not have the icons appear on the user's Start menu?

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

Hello,
I was tasked with deploying a new custom background image for my company's lock and logon screen.
The deployment worked as planned, but because the new background is a bit busier than a simple color, it is confusing to the end-user.
We'd like to be able to remove the user account picture and frame from the logon screen-- to clarify, we'd like to remove the
whole frame and not just clear out the account image.  (I've attached an image below to display the goal here.)
Is there a way of doing this via Group Policy?
We don't have this issue with our Windows 10 PCs, just the Windows 7 systems.
Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Live Update in my Administrator account and now Norton AV only runs in my administrative accounts. When I try starting Norton in a user account I get a message box titled "ccApp.exe" with a message saying "Application failed to initialize properly (0x000022)". Curiously I get the same message box (different title) when I start Adobe reader. And also Norton's parental controls seem to block me from accessing all sites from Firefox and most sites from IE7 despite my user account being configured as an 'Adult'. From my two administrator accounts you'd never know anything was wrong. Another strange occurrence is that all the files in my shared directory have become read only to all my user accounts. This last artifact was happening erratically before I reinstalled Live Update and rebooting always restored write access. Now these files are only read access. I seem to have misplaced my Norton AV cd so I'd really like to resolve this without having to download Norton to reinstall the entire application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2-1051F running Windows 10. I have a number of modern apps that refuse to open unless I am actively connected to the internet. Desktop (or legacy) apps open fine in airplane mode, but anything downloaded from the Windows Store will not. This even includes built-in apps such as calculator (?).

So far, I have tried:

1. running "sfc /scannow" in Command Prompt
2. running "WSReset.exe"
3. updating all drivers from lenovo

I also spent the better part of yesterday afternoon chatting with Contact Support, who at various points told me that the tablet was designed to work that way (um, no), that no Windows apps will open without internet connection (false), or simply ended the chat when it seemed like they were in over their heads.

has anyone else noticed this problem? I have tried to recreate it on my desktop (also running Windows 10) by unplugging my ethernet cable and then opening various apps, and it functions as expected - they will open and perform everything normally, unless specifically needing the internet.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that certain apps require Internet Access (Hulu or Netflix come to mind). However, for even calculator to not open without internet seems wrong.

Please let me know if i left any other pertinent information out!

Thanks!

Nice demo but, can I say that... to be accurate like that requires dexterity and a healthy wrist.
One cannot miss that mark or else it must be re applied ?
Don't pull it down completely or too slow or hesitate or let go of the button - oops...

One of my 4 trackball buttons is set to close a window - program or app. That's it, one button to close anything.
Not the X in the upper corner. I don't use the X in the upper corner.

On the other hand, I like app switching and suspension of apps. They are instant on.

Hello Guys,

I don't use Internet while working, so I don't need Antivirus security while working. I created 2 Use Accounts one for my work and another one for online browsing. Tried to disable AVG protection on my work account. But it didn't work because AVG don't have single user installation option. Also tried to disable AVG on start up but it applied for the both accounts. I don't want to switch to any other Antivirus because I'm pretty much satisfied with AVG and using AVG from more than 4yrs.

So can any one tell me "Is there any way to disable Apps on Secondary Accounts?".

Hello.

I've been using Windows 10 for weeks. Until today, it started up just fine by displaying my name and no email address. This is exactly how I want it to be.

Today when Win 10 would not recognize a printer, in order to download an "app" to help with this, I was required to provide a Microsoft email account, which I did (an old Hotmail account I rarely use). Now when I restart or wake up the computer, that old Hotmail account appears as "Administrator". However, I do NOT want that old Hotmail email address associated with this computer.

How can I remove it and get back to logging in with NO associated email address?

NOTE: I do not want to delete the old Hotmail account; just want to remove it from my Windows 10 "Account" menu (My name + Hotmail address + "Administrator").

In case it's required to associate Win 10 with an email address, I use Windows Live Essentials with a company email address. I tried adding it via the "Other Account" option, but Win 10 said it did not recognize the email address I entered, sigh.

I saw threads with a similar question but not quite the same.

Thanks for any help!

I'm at a bit of a loss on this one... My wife's laptop sat unused for a week while she was away. Upon return, none of her applications (OpenOffice, iTunes, etc) would open and she couldn't access any of her files (docs, images, music, etc). She was getting a permission denied error. Looking a little closer, she doesn't have permissions for anything. A bit of fiddling and some reboots and we're no closer. I can log into the laptop using my credentials and I have access to everything, including her files.

My wife's account is a Microsoft live account, while mine is a local account. They are both members of the Administrators group. Nothing was installed just before she went away or while she was away. I can't figure out what would have caused this. There's a lot of history in her account that she doesn't want to lose and have to rebuild (browser favourites, iTunes library, etc). Everything is still there.

any thoughts would be really appreciated.

Hey guys.

So I live in Ireland and when installing Windows 8, I set some language choices to Irish (keyboard and date/time), but language to English UK. In previous installations of Windows, such as Windows 7, this did not make apps show up with Irish language titles.

After removing Ireland from the Language options > Control Panel - Language, some apps went back to displaying in English. But other Modern UI apps, like the news still show up in Irish titles.

Have I missed a setting of some sort? I have attached a screenshot of my language options, just in-case i'm missing something.
PS: I have already rebooted a few times since changing these options.

Thanks!

EDIT: Fixed. The latest batch of Windows updates seems to have kicked it back into English. Thanks anyway!

Currently, you can only buy 'modern' apps in the Windows Store but that will all soon change thanks to a blog post that was quickly pulled by Microsoft. Because of that post, we know that non-modern apps will soon be sold in the store.

Per the blog post: The Windows Store will also support more than just modern apps. It will add desktop apps, as well as other types of digital content. We will provide many different ways to pay for apps. One step was to delete the User Profile that has the problem

Then select Classic View and click the "Click to Play" button.

When I go to Safe Mode/ Control Panel there is no option for Classic View and there is no "Click to Play" button.

BTW: I do not understand why a button used to remove a User Profile would be labeled "Click to Play"

I am writing this in Safe Mode so it may look wierd

Win7 Ultimate x64 on HP DC7600.

I was really surprised that this old Microsoft issue/problem somehow got carried over all the way from the bad old days to new/shiny Windows 7.
I have a main User account with Administrator privileges that is my 'daily driver'.
I recently created a second User Account for Test purposes. [I'm a tech and need to try things sometimes].
A week or so ago I "deleted" the User Account using the proper method... errr... the way MS would have me to, in the UAC settings Control Panel.

Today, due to another issue I am now having [never had before] I got to wondering if the old issue of ever-present zombie User Accounts was in this rig. YES it is. Checked into Documents & Settings and Registry and the account is still there in one state or another.

How do I COMPLETELY eradicate that Account and all its traces?
I need to do this for debug reasons on a Sleep/Wake problem that I never had before.

thx
z

A:How to completely [really] remove a user account

Is it still listed in User Accounts? Try deleting it again if so.

I'm not sure what you mean by the account still showing up in "Documents and Settings" or the registry. These could be ghost listings simply needing file deletion or Reg cleanup with CCleaner.

If not, then I would attempt to System Restore to before you created the Account which may leave files to delete but not the Account itself. This is also a fix for sleep issues based on a change made like this.

In fact after fixing sleep I create a System Restore point called "Sleep" then apportion enough HD space (20%) for Restore points that it hangs around.

I am reading everywhere that Windows 8 is not being very successful by now, but the big thing with Windows 8 is Modern UI and the whole new ecosystem of apps, market and interface.

And I still don't know how much are Windows 8 users using all of it.

For instance, I never use Modern UI at all. I never check the app market, never install apps, never use them...

What about you?

*NOTE: NEVER also means RARELY, too little use to being called occasional use.

I wanted to change the survey but the system won't allow it. So please take it for NEVER or RARELY.

A:So, do you use W8 Modern UI apps?

I never use 'em, and I'm not likely to.

A:Can I remove User Account from Start screen

I have been looking for a way to remove it as well. I know you can remove some of the entries under it when clicked on in the Group Policy editor but in order to completely remove it you will need to edit a DLL file I'm pretty sure.

I thought I read somewhere how to do this but can't find it anymore.

Anyway, I want to remove the user account pic at the login screen. Not change it but remove it completely so all I have is a clean background (I've already removed the background picture and set it to a plain grey color).

Thanks for your help.

My modern apps no longer will run in my windows 8.1 Pro laptop.
The two that I use are Microsoft Solitaire Collection and the Weather app.
I don't want to uninstall and reinstall them (also for the umteenth time), because I DO NOT want to lose my Solitaire collection stats, 500 wins out of 500 plays in Freecell.
What to do!
I know it's just a stupid game, but, still, there should be some way to fix this without having to uninstall and reinstall, again!
Or, if there is a way to preserve the stats in an uninstall/reinstall scenario, that would work for me.  In the past, the stats get reset in an uninstall/reinstall of Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

A:My "Modern" Apps have stopped running for the umteenth time in my Windows 8.1 Pro

The answer turns out to be quite simple.  When I added the "Authenticated Users" user in the security tab for my Users folder, and propagated the changes down through the directory tree, any folder that had the ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES (or
some other metro based user account) user got hosed.  (The ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES user got dropped).
This, combined with the fact that, I guess, the metro apps run under some user other than the logged in user or depend on a software component that does the same, AND that when folder access is denied to the metro app, the program just closes with no error
message, created the problem.
I understand that the metro app programmers are just too cool to need to bother with such error popups ...
Once ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES is added, the metro apps start working again!

I don't understand why Microsoft requires UAC to be enabled for me to use any Modern Apps or the App Store. I always turn off UAC and one of the programs I use, Object Rexx from IBM does not run correctly with UAC enabled. I find the UAC prompts intrusive and extremely annoying and as far as I'm concerned UAC is a total waste as after a very short period of time it becomes automatic to click OK without even reading the UAC notice.

Anyone know what the rational for this is? Is there a workaround for it? I'd like to play with some of the Apps but I'm not going to enable UAC to do it.

A:Why does UAC have to be enabled to use any Modern Apps

Hey Rich,

When UAC is disabled, the account basically runs elevated. Modern apps will not run in an elevated account by design for security purposes.

About all you can do is set your UAC settings to the bottom level.

Delete the strange account totally (when logged on good working account). Reboot (not necessary I think). Strange account is really gone? Remake the account without a password. Works?
Set password on that again

Is there anyway possible to remove that Aero border that surrounds the user account icon? Can it be disabled for both the login screen and start menu?

A:Remove Aero border around user account icon

For the login screen you would need to edit the authui.dll, look at Post #23 of this thread Removing Picture Frame On Startup/Login Screen Danny has already made up a authui.dll that removes the logon picture.

To remove the user picture from the start menu have a look at these two options.

I've posted this on another forum but would like to get opinions from this group as well.

I'm curious. Why would anyone go to the trouble of developing or updating a Windows "modern" app considering the current environment. As I understand it, the current "Universal" app was supposed to bridge the environments between Windows Phone, Windows RT and regular Windows. It appears Windows RT has no future except for a trivial update that will come in October. Also, it appears that Microsoft is not being fully honest when they promise new Lumia phones, but then fired most if not all of the phone development team. Windows 10 appears to have deprecated touch. So what is left? Where do Windows Universal Apps really fit into the grand scheme of things? Is there any particular reason to develop apps in an environment that is so restrictive?

A:Discussion: Are Windows "Modern" Apps of any value?

My observation, from seeing the changes introduced in Win10 from the Insiders program is that MS is obsessed with the Metro UI -- and wants EVERYTHING to take on that look and feel, period. I don't use a Windows phone and don't have a current Windows tablet -- so I have no use for a one-size-fits-all UI experience. That means, I have no real love for the Metro UI.

Plus, MS is clearly choosing looks over features -- when they swapped out a fully functioning IE browser for a half-baked Edge replacement. And now, other app developers are jumping on the same bandwagon with VideoLAN producing a Store version of VLC -- which, folks have said -- (like Edge) does not have the functionality of its "legacy app" counterpart.

MS's end plan is probably to have everyone using apps from their Store -- so they can control the content, and ALSO, so they can charge folks for new apps and for upgrades. They're pushing their subscription model onto their Office products, wouldn't surprise me if they did this on their Store apps, as well.

One of the frequent questions on the Win10 forums is how to uninstall these Store apps -- and from what I've read, it's very difficult (if not impossible) to do. So, folks end up disabling them, instead.

Is there a awy to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?

For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.

So, if anyone knows of any methods I could try to do this, I would be all ears! I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.

I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.

Thanks a lot, everyone!
