Preferred Solution: Cannot connect Windows Media Player to the internet for Media info

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

I don't purposely use WMP but yesterday I tried to view a video stream off of 2 different web sites that use WMP and could not view the stream. When I right click on the player and check error details I get error code C00D1197 can't play the file. I googled that code and none of the fixes would correct the problem. I rolled back to WMP 10 and get same problem. I reinstalled WMP 11 and same problem. It seems it comes down to this: When I right click at the top of WMP 10 or 11 >tools>options I can click on every tab and go to that tabs contents except network. I can view a DVD or listen to a CD in WMP ok. What gives?.

Go here;

and look at the screen shot and see if you have a check mark in the line that is highlighted?
Is your Firewall blocking it?

My Windows Media Player will no longer connect to the Internet to, for example, get album information or open the Radio Tuner. When I try this, I just get the standard “The page cannot be displayed” Web page. (I can otherwise access the Internet via a browser.)
I have all the right options set: under the Media Library tab, ‘Update my music files...’ and under the Privacy, ‘Retrieve Media Information for CDs and DVDs from the Internet’ and ‘Update my music files...’. It’s been about two or three months since it stopped working. Until then, all was fine.
I’ve tried re-running the player's installer, switching off firewall and antivirus software and reducing security and privacy Internet Options to 'low', to no effect. Suggestions as to what to try would be much appreciated. I’m using Media Player 9 Series (version 9.00.00.4510) on XP. (Yes, I know.)
Thanks for reading.

Hi
I had a few problems with the album info in Media Player (some tracks werent assigned to the correct album - some albums appeared twice with some tracks in one instance and the rest in another). I have resolved this but I now get different album info in Media Center (some are still split, some album art isnt showing even though it appears correctly in Media Player). Does anyone have any ideas how the info is different (I thought Media Centre read the Media Player Library) and how to fix it?
Thanks
Roger

General technique:
1) Edit the tags in Windows
2) Drag the album to WMP11 to check
3) Fix the tag info in Windows where needed
4) Redrag to WMP11 and check again
5) Repeat 3 and 4 as necessary
6) Open VMC and pray!

Problem 1: Inconsistent/duplicate albums
You didn't mention the file types, but I'll assume they're MP3s. In this case the problems is likely in the tags. Try this procedure:

1) Select all of the tracks of the album inside of Windows
2) Right click and select "Properties", then "Details" to bring up the Tag editor
3) Rename the Album Artist to something different like "a" and hit OK
4) Do this again but this time rename the Album Artist back to the correct name and hit OK

This will clear any inconsistencies in the Album Artist which seem to happen when tags are downloaded from the internet. Remember that tag info is a community thing, their is no quality control.

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Answer:

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

heres my story,
my old laptop bit the dust recently and i had a large collection of music on it. i had input all of the album information manually in WMP. this was WMP 11 and the OS was vista.
i now have a new laptop (OS windows 7) and i believe it has WMP 12 instead of 11. i was able to retrieve all my data off the old laptop and now i want to put all the album information from my old windows media player on to this new one so that all my songs and albums are fully tagged again (cuz it would be a lot of work to tag them all over).

IN SHORT
i want to know if this is possible and if anyone knows if there is a file somewhere where all this album information is kept for windows media player 11.

thank you

A:Windows Media Player Album Info?

Hi,

As far as I know (I might be wrong) the album information is usually stored inside each music file's ID3 tag, thus eliminating the need for Windows Media Player to store any album information itself. If it isn't then perhaps someone else can correct me on that.

Regards,

Jon.

Now, I expect people will simply advise me to use WinAmp or MusicMatch instead, but before I give up and turn to one of these I wonder if someone can answer the following...

Upgrading from WPlayer 9 to version 10 seems to have lost me access to useful album reviews, artist info, etc. In version 9 you could just click on the album art and -hey presto- you were taken to the artists bio, reviews, back-catalogue, etc. What the hell's happened to all that in the new version???

Any help welcome. I'm going crazy trying to work out why Microsoft have removed the one redeeming feature from this peice of software...
Martin.

A:Windows Media Player 10 artist info?

Go to the triangle pointing down, to the left of the X that closes the Media Player on the upper-right hand corner. Click on the triangle -- Tools -- Privacy Tab. Check the following boxes:

* Display Media Information over the Internet
* Update music files by retrieving .... etc.
* Acquire licences automatically ...

That should allow you to see the information about your songs.

Hello,

I am currently using Windows Media Player 11 and I am having issues with album information not displaying after I download music from amazon.com and after I rip a CD, it only shows the song title. I have to go through each song and select Find album information to get it. Another problem is that the music time does not display.

I've tried deleting my temporary internet files, deleting the WMP database from the Media Player folder from Start > run. I also resetting options from the Library and Privacy tab, and also resetting Internet Explorer settings from the control panel, and rebooting my machine.

I've been having this problem for several weeks now and I can't seem to figure out why . Can you help me? My OS is Windows XP and sometimes I connect to the internet through VPN and off VPN. My ISP is ATT.
Thanks,
Yonnie

I have a music mix "album" on my PC that I wanted to burn to a cd-r. I have done with countless times with absolutely no problem. But today when I burned my mix to a disc, the information on the burned disc such as track name and name of cd are not showing up. Just a generic "Unknown Album" and "track 1..." and so on. I tried to burn to disc three times and all three times I got the same result. I have never had this happen before.

I know there was a windows 10 update that was loaded on to pc earlier in the week. I'm wondering if there is some bug in the update that might be causing this problem.

Any suggestions appreciated.

A:Windows Media Player not copying track info

Nevermind. I just typed all the info in and then ripped CD with the idea I would try the newly ripped mix. But instead when I inserted the cd I just ripped from back into pc all the info was there. Still annoying that I had to do that but at least I can now burn a cd with all the info.

Whenever I play an MP3, DVD movie, or CD audio, I try to get Media Player to show information on the current item that is playing. For some reason, Media Player refuses to connect to the WindowsMedia.com site to show information. Instead, I get the following screen (see attached screenshot).

Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 running on HP Pavilion DV4-1125nr Laptop.

Notes:
1) I am NOT trying to get Media Player to update my files. Simply want it to display information on the screen for the currently playing media.
2) Tried turning firewall on and off, no help.
3) If I hit the Media Guide tab in Media Player it has no problem connecting to the interent and displaying the website. It is only in the "Now Playing" tab that I cannot see information.
4) I tried to Google this problem and have not found anyone with this issue or a solution.
5) I have the latest Windows updates and drivers installed.
6) I have no funky tweaks or network settings installed.
7) I have already tried a fresh install of Vista, with no resolution.

Thanks in advance for any input!

heres my story,
my old laptop bit the dust recently and i had a large collection of music on it. i had input all of the album information manually in WMP. this was WMP 11 and the OS was vista.
i now have a new laptop (OS windows 7) and i believe it has WMP 12 instead of 11. i was able to retrieve all my data off the old laptop and now i want to put all the album information from my old windows media player on to this new one so that all my songs and albums are fully tagged again (cuz it would be a lot of work to tag them all over).

IN SHORT
i want to know if this is possible and if anyone knows if there is a file somewhere where all this album information is kept for windows media player 11.

thank you

I've been trying to use internet features on MS Media Player 9 (and 8 perviously) and always get 'This Page Cannot Be Displayed'.

I am also unable to play streamed video from the web. When I try, I get the following message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is not responding. If you entered a URL or path to play the file, verify that it is correct. If you clicked a link to play the file, the link may not be valid."

I had no problems in the past, but haven't been using Media Player for some time. About a month ago, I started connecting to the internet via a wireless broadband gateway, and I wonder if this is why I cna no longer connect Media Player (IE browser connects just fine).

Any ideas? Many thanks

I figured it out. My firewall was blocking it. If you are having this problem do the following...

1.) - Open the "Start Menu".
2.) - Go to the "Control Panel".
3.) - Double click "Security Center".
4.) - Click "Windows Firewall" in the top left.

Hello Green Ranger,
Have you checked your firewall settings ?.
Take a look and see if you can add WMP to the exceptions list.
Also , in WMP options, check that the option to update from the web is enabled.
Hope this helps, post your results, thanks.

Hi :)

So I originally had Windows Media Player 10 installed, and then I upgraded to Media Player 11 for a few months. After a while, I decided I didn't like it, so I rolled back to Media Player 10, but all my play count data has been reverted to back before I installed Media Player 11.

I would like to know if there was a way I could restore that play count data if at all possible. It's not a big problem, I know, but it's a problem nonetheless and I would like it fixed.

Thanks in advance :)

Whenever I open the above mentioned Media Players on my system, their interface opens up and after I open and select any media (usually audio) file, the player keeps on connecting to the file and takes more than 1 minute and above in opening and playing any valid and good media file, may it be a .wma or .mp3 audio file.
How to fasten the dead slow speed of the players?

My Windows Media does not display song titles/artist/composer correctly, but only when the CD contains songs from more than one artist, for example, on albums that are "Collection CD's".  If these CD's are ripped, the mp3 files are
created with the incorrect track information.

The problem only seems to come up when there is more than one artist on the CD. Often there is one song in the list of title for the CD displayed correctly, but not as the correct track number.  And the other songs are sometimes all incorrect.
The problem originally showed itself as all of the song title/artist information for each song would be correct but the tracks were in a jumbled order.

I don't know if it would have caused a problem but when the problem first started happening for me, I'd edit the track information using the My Computer File Manager.

It has become very frustrating to try rip a CD that I've bought, as it takes a very long time to correct the track information.

Until recently I was able to open asx files and play videos and stream with Windows Media. Now when I try to do this, it says that "Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might not be correct ..." This is happening on both my Dell Dimension 4600 desk PC (Windows XP Pro SP3) and my HP laptop with runs Vista. I usually use Firefox and have also tried it with Internet Explorer. As recommended by the Windows support site, I have gone to Now Playing -> More Options and then the Network tab (under WMP), everything is checked except "Use Ports" and I am doing the Autodetect for HTTP and RTSP. My husband has tried this on the computer at his workplace and it works. Somehow something has changed on our home computers so that we can't get this to work.

Things I have also tried but haven't worked:
I have uninstalled Windows Media Player and reinstalled it;
I have tried an earlier version of WMP, I think WMP 8.

By the way, I'm running WMP 11 as well as MediaPlayerConnectivity 0.8.3 (which I read I should run on some other forum).

I have also tried to play these files with RealPlayer and WinAmp. With Winamp is tries to load it and says, "New Track" and then says, "End of Playback". I haven't used RealPlayer or Winamp much so I don't know if they would have worked previously.

Any thoughts?

When I insert a cd in my laptop on my desktop and every other computer I've ever had, all of the cd info (album name, track names, artist, etc) appears. That does not happen on my laptop. It always says unknown artist. I can click on the "find album info" tab at the top right, and it will find the info. It just will not name the tracks or give any info. If anyone has any suggestions please help. I work in the music industry and really need this to work. I use Zone Alarm, but have totally disabled it when attempting this.
Thank you for your time

Never disable ZoneAlarm just to look up CD info. If you're talking about Windows Media Player, Click on Tools>Options>Privacy. Then make sure you have a checkmark in "Display Media information from the Internet". Hope this helps. But, don't ever disable ZoneAlarm for something this silly.

A:Solved: Stop Windows Media Player Automaticly ading media files to libary

In WMP go to Tools > Options and uncheck all the boxes in the Player tab, Privacy tab and Library tab.

In the Library tab click on Monitor Folders and set the top part to "My personal folders", then click on Advanced Options.

Set all the folders to "Ignore". Unfortunately you can't set the Rip folder to "Ignore" so for that go to the Rip music tab, where it says "Rip music to this location" click on Change and create an empty folder somewhere. Then just never add any music files to that folder.

Then delete everything out of the WMP library and it should remain empty.

Every since January 4th of this year, I have been trying to fix a very annoying issue with windows media player.
How It Started
Back in January my dad's computer constantly kept freezing over and over due to him having way to many podcast on his computer. I'm the only one who knew how to fix it from crashing and so I tried to delete some of the memory off the computer, however when
the memory was low I noticed that a few programs (including media player) were not functioning correctly. I was able to fix them but then I noticed that media player's entire library was missing, which made me think if I restarted the computer, it would fix
it. Sadly it didn't but I was able to find tutorials on how to restore the library back to MP, but the thing is before I attempted that, I went into media player with administrator on in hopes it would make a change. Of course it didn't but now there's a issue
that I face and I keep running into dead ends. Every single time I try to turn on media sharing in the WMP library, when I check both options and then click ok it doesn't do anything. No matter how many times I try to press it, nothing happens and also what
I find strange is that the ok button has a administrator prompt shield on it now. Kind of like it's trying to ask for permission but fails before it can do that.
The solutions I have tried
I have tried dozens of solutions and yet none of them fix the issue. I tried using regedit.exe and tried fixing it's registry but that di... Read more

So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.

I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.

I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.

The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.

On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

Does anybody know of any solutions?

Well, I'm not sure what to do here. Up until a few days ago I was sharing my media with all computers on my network on my wireless router.

Now when I log into windows and open WMP 11 it says that I am no longer sharing media, would you like to turn on sharing? So I say yes and confirm to share my media to all devices on my network, mainly my PS3.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it (well it actually just reverted back). I also checked to make sure that Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is set to automatic in Admin tools. And also checked windows firewall that it allows the service.

So I am at a loss here, I don't know how to get my media sharing capabilites back. I know its not my PS3, as I am sharing media from my laptop right now. Any suggestions?

Thanks High

I am using WMP 12, on Windows 7, as a media server for an external disk (WD Passport Ultra) plugged into and configured by my router (ZyXel VMG8924) via its USB slot. It works quite happily for video files up to two hierarchical levels below my Videos folder,
i.e. they are arranged in year number folders and some of those folders have sub-folders, none of whose contents appear to be indexed by WMP Digital Server, but all videos at the two higher hierarchical levels are. I have tried both the 'apply media information
changes' option from the Organize menu option, and the 'make all of the media in my library available to my device' from the media streaming options customization but neither had any effect in showing up my missing videos (which by the way are mainly mpg's).
The router also allows configuration of an ftp server for the Videos folder and this is able to retrieve every single file in it so I know they are accessible by this route. Any ideas?

I have some problems to sort the music files in the library. If there is an album with more than one disc, the sorting is like that: 1 - track 1 CD1 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD1 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... I would like more logical sorting like this: 1 - track 1 CD1 2 - track 2 CD1 etc... 1 - track 1 CD2 2 - track 2 CD2 etc... Do you see what I mean ? It seems that WMP/WMC doesn't sort using the "disc number" tag of the file (as it should be). Is there any way to sort it fine without creating 2 different albums for a 2 disc album ? Thank you.

A:Windows media player 12 / Windows Media Center - Multiple-Cds Albums sorting in library

The strange "subtitle" answer above is not really a valid notion given the lack of persistence.  When you step back, you see as koawmfot noted that this is really about the use of the "Set" field.  WMP does not and will not use the Set field to sort.  Instead it uses Album title as Shark noted. So the correct answer here would be to use the Album title field as the descriptive identifier.  If you really don't want to do this, you can use the track number such as by setting t1d1 to be 0101, t1d2 to be 0201, and so forth.  So those are the viable solutions, really. The problem with "Set" is that it doesn't fit well within the Explorer namespace / folder views.  This is consistent with the player storing one album in one folder, as opposed to dumping everything to one common folder - where you may have issues with filename collisions depending upon your naming scheme. As such it is not supported and is unlikely to be supported, sorry.

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.
