x270 M.2 SSD Upgrade to 1TB not recognized

Q: x270 M.2 SSD Upgrade to 1TB not recognized

I have a 512GB 42mm (2242) SSD in the M.2 slot. I use that as my primary for boot, etc. Have a second drive in the conventional slot. I just bought a 1TB of the exact same drive to upgrade the M.2 - but my Thinkpad isn't recognizing it. I know the drive is good because I have a M.2 - USB adapter and it recognizes it there. Any thoughts? Do I need some sort of driver or BIOS update that I'm unaware of, or does the hardware simply not support this? I suppose I could initialize and format the drive in the USB slot and then see if it works in the M.2 slot, but wanted to ask the community first.David

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello ,

I just bought a lenovo Thinkpad X270 with a 256GB SSD M2 PCle-NVMe hard disk . they were supposed to upgrade it to 512GB SSD M2 PCle- NVMe but they didn't have time to do it before i had to pick it up.

So now what can i do ? 256GB is too small, can i install a second SSD disk on the lenovo X270 or should i change the original one to a bigger one ? But in this case how to do with the windows 10 which is pre install in it ?

thanks for your information.

Hello,I am looking at adding SSD Drive to my X270. I am not your expert at this. I was told that I can add mSATA in place of the  WLAN card. Is that true? any mSATA will do, or there is a list of SSD disk that are compatible?Any other option to the mSATA without having to replace my hard drive? After adding an mSATA in the WLAN slot, how could I move my Windows 7 to it?I do have a X230 with 256GB SSD drive. Could it be moved to my new X270?Appreciate all your help

A lot depends on what you do with the machine.  An SSD is much faster than a spinning drive, and the biggest improvement comes on startup and shut-down where lots of little files are read and written.  (eliminates latency due to spinning time) When you are reading or writing big files, the SSD is still faster, but the difference is less.  3X4 is certainly faster than 3X2, but you will hardly notice it with little files (like startup).  The difference is greater when moving a lot of data in large files.  If you are loading data to or from the Internet, the difference will be much less because the network throughput is more likely to be the bottleneck.  Most SSDs work.  I have used ADATA drives, but not that one.  When buying non-lenovo parts, always confirm the seller's return policy.

One more thing.  When a spinning drive fails, it usually dies slowly.  You have warning signs, like read errors, timeouts, etc.  You have a chance to get most of your data off.  SSDs usually die all at once.  There is no recovery, so backups are more critical.

I have a disk spinning X270 and I plan to upgrade the SSD. After reviewing a bunch articles I decide to use the WWAN slot.I saw a thread using a transcend 256G M2 SATA as following,https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X270-Bios-Update-v1-11-Broke-my-M-2-SSD-WWAN-... What I am really interested in is that if I can use the WWAN slot to install a M.2 2242 PCIe, instead of the SATA, such as a Toshiba RC100 M.2 2242 240GB NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 64-layer 3D BiCS TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ... There are posts on Reddit saying that the 2242 has to be SATA, but it was in early 2017. Anybody know if it is doable to put a M.2 PCIe in the WWAN and boot the system on?

Hi, So I have an X270 with a 256gb SSD. I have been wanting to upgrade memory and the drive and ordered in what I thought was the correct path: 16gb SODIMM and a 2.5" Samsung EVO SSD. If I understand the terminology,  after opening the unit it appears that the boot drive is PCIe NVME 2280 mounted into a caddy placed in the 2.5" drive slot. So from other reading, it appears that I have some limited options. I had assumed that the boot drive was in the 2242 slot, and that I would just stick this new Samsung into the 2.5" slot and be done. But that caddy to the 2280 drive does not have a similar cable connector to my Samsung EVO 860 I purchased.  The questions I have are: am I locked into the 2280 drive form factor in my configuration? Presumably this means that I return my Evo 860 (or stick it in another machine in the house) and by a larger 2280 drive and do a restore from media? Any advantage/pros/cons to this versus adding 2242 on top of the existingIt appears that there is a much smaller range of manufacturers and sizes for 2242 drives (and apparently some Transcend units don't work?) but I could just bite the bullet and install a secondary 2242 drive in the WWAN slot and call it a day?On a secondary issue: is it possible to install a lighted keyboard into an X270 that has previously not had one? I know that this involves diving deep into this assembly, but curious if anyone has ever done it and their success or challenges. Thanks in advance for any ... Read more

It loads a disc and you can here it running.  I have checked the BIOS and it is listed in the boot order.  I have checked the registry and there are no upper and lower filters listed to delete. I have powered down and removed the battery and rebooted, nothing. I know it was working prior to the win 10 upgrade. I'm not even sure how to determine what brand of dvd it is in order to troubleshoot this issue, my ignorance is showing!  Anybody got any ideas on what to do next?

I have a HP Pavilion laptop model N5435, which has Windows XP and 256 RAM. I bought a 512MB upgrade chip and installed it on top of the built in chip correctly. This model is upgradeable to 1GB total.

However, the upgraded RAM is not being recognized. When I check the total RAM, it still shows 256 (actually 248, but I don't know why).

In the Windows Help, it says you can use your System Summary to check the BIOS or EFI version & date

and verify that new memory is installed correctly by checking the Total Physical Memory and Available Physical Memory.

However, it does not explain how to do this.

Can anyone explain how to get the computer to recognize the upgraded RAM?

A:Upgrade Ram Chip Not Recognized

All RAM is not equal, there are single-sided, double sided, ECC, Non ECC etc.

You need to determine exactly what your system requires. Seems like it's not the one you have.

The 256/248 difference will be 8 MB used for video display most likely.

Even if I plug it in to the USB port, it's like it won't even find the printer. I don't even hear the sound that the printer is plugging in. I have tried several USB ports and yes, the ports are working as I have tried other hardware in them.

Don't know what to try to correct this.

Greetings!

I have a HP Pavilion ze4610us that I want to upgrade the RAM (currently at 512 MB [2x256]) which, according to the manual, can take a maximum of 1 GB. All the research I've done point to the RAM being DDR, PC2700 (or PC2100), SODIMM, 200-pin.Yesterday, I bought two PNY 512MB and installed them. For some reason, the system will read only about 192MB, which makes XP SP2 run extreeemly slow. The RAM I bought states on the package that it is also compatible with PC2100 , so I don't think that would be an issue if the speed should be slower. So how do I get the system to recognize all of the RAM? I've even tried putting just one of the 512's in along with one of the other 256's and the system will recognize the full 256 and part of the 512 and show the RAM as approx 448MB. I tried both of the 512's and got the same results.
Earlier, I tried a Kingston 1GB and the computer wouldn't recognize it at all. So it went to my wife's computer and is working very well.
Since my question is buried in the middle of my rambling, here it is again: how do I get the system to recognize all of the RAM I'm installing?

hi all,
im new here and appreciate the help.
i purchased a acer aspire 5735-4774 (intel pentium dual core processor t3200, 2.0 ghz 667 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache, Vista Home Premium 32 bit)... i comes pre-installed with 2gb of RAM with a max capacity of 4gb. i bought 2 x 2gb kingston ddr2 pc-5300 667 mhz and installed it... now the problem. in my "system" folder, it still says that there are only 2gb. i did all the appropriate mechanical checks and re-tried- still only 2gb. so, i put one of the original 1gb with one of the new 2gb, and the system now said 3gb??? so, i switched them to make sure that both slots could read the 2gb and it still said 3gb. so, i then re-placed both of the new 2gb sticks and it went back to saying 2gb. i know that with the 32 bit system, i wont get all 4gb, but it shouldnt keep saying that there is only 2gb. ive been so frustrated trying to figure this out... i called acer- useless. i looked for a bios update and there isnt one on the website. can someone please help?!??!?!?!? it's driving me crazy.
thanks!!!

A:RAM Upgrade not recognized by system

Vista 32-bit can only see 4 GB, if not less caused by some being allocated to other hardware. The reason is the 32-bitness. 2^32=4294967296 =4*1024*1024*1024. Only 64-bit Vista versions can handle over 4 GB of RAM.
Did you make sure the kingstons are compatible with that Acer? I can't see any memory maker (kingston, crucial, corsair) listing any compatible RAM for that PC. Ah, actually Crucial does. I would recommend trying such kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148201

When the computer boots up and also when restarted, the CD drive is listed as E: under "Computer" and also in the Device Manager. It does respond to a right click on E: to open the tray.
When any of several CDs are run, the 'doughnut' spins for 5-8 minutes resulting with "E:\ refers to a location that is unavailable..." Or using the Task Manager to exit causes a gray out with "Computer not Responding."
Then E: is no longer listed under Computer or in the Device Manger. The CD tray will not open. With the CD inside it takes 5-8 minutes for the computer to shut down or restart. The CD tray can only be opened when the computer is first (re)starting. Without the CD inside start up is within 60 seconds.
Using the Device Manager to update, the response is 'The best driver for your device is already installed.'
Following Win7 troubleshooting, I've also uninstalled and rebooted to reload the driver. Checked the cables disconnecting and reconnecting the CD drive and mother board.
Checked the registry for upper and lower filters (none were listed so none needed to be removed) and followed the numerous other measures... Read more

Here's what I found for the solution:This worked to fix my Windows 10  system. Note this mentions 32-bit but did work for my 64 bit Windows 10. This was taken from  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03280768  Resolution 5: Create a registry subkeyNote To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. If you need help verifying that you are an administrator, go to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/adminImportant Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur. To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:    Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box. (or right-click on windows icon in lower left corner)    Type regedit in the Run box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow    In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey:    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi    Right-click atapi, point to New, then click Key.    Type Controller0, and then press Enter.    Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then click DWORD(32-bit) Value .    Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter.    Right-click EnumDevice1, click Modify....&nbs... Very frustrated

Bought an Windows 7 home premium upgrade disc for my Vista home premium pc, duly went and downloaded the upgrade advisor program before opening the package and it told me that my computer was a-ok to run windows 7 and upgrade, so I opened the package and put the dvd in my laptop's drive.

Nothing.

It makes a whirring noise, then sticks, if I click on the drive it tells me to insert a disc and ejects the windows 7 dvd.

This is the first and only DVD that has ever behaved like this, all others work.

I went back to the shop and the DVD ran on the computers there.

Why won't it run on mine?

Have an optiarc 5540a dvd drive. In a Dell inspiron 1720 running Vista 32 home premium. The drivers are up to date according to windows.

also, if the shop won't refund my money because I've opened the package (BECAUSE THE STUPID MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE ADVISOR TOLD ME EVERYTHING WOULD WORK) How do I get my money back from microsoft for selling me a dud?

Also, where's a good place to buy a macbook as I have had enough of this ****

First Vista and now this.

Try another DVD drive since it is clear from your tests that it is your DVD drive and not Win7.

You can load it to a flash stick using another computer to boot isntall instead of from DVD: Extract ISO using ImgBurn, Download UltraISO trial, load ISO file, Write Disk Image to flash stick from Bootable tab, click Format button first.

Reformated main drive to install win98se (from win95) and now my hp8250i will not operate. Put a CD in and I get 'device not ready'. Won't read either CD-R's or RW's. Just sits there with the light on. Checked everything in device manager and says everything is installed and working properly. Says I have a model 8290 installed but someone told me they are probably shared drivers. Uninstalled and reinstalled the cd software and win98 with no luck.
The 'EasyCD Creator' software installed and runs fine and will read my CD-rom which also works fine.
When I run their troubleshooting the self-test says 'ASPI layer may be missing or corrupted'. When I downloaded a program from hp to check the ASPI installation it said it was 'properly installed'. I've checked for updates at their site and all I get is 'You already have latest version of toolbox' (their diagnostic utility). When I tried their support page I didn't receive an answer.
If I try to updated the drivers windows puts windows drivers in and calls it a generic drive and it still doesn't work.
I've reformated before with win95 with no problems.
I'm at my witt's end here trying to figure out why this is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have several computers on my network. Some are running Windows 2000, some XP and one is running Vista.

I just upgraded (upgrade installation) from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro. The upgraded system still recognizes my log-in name and password when logging in locally. Everything seems to work fine, internet and all; but, there's one problem. When I go to a remote system on the same LAN and try to access a drive on the recently-upgraded system, it rejects my user name and password.

I've tried all caps, all lower case on user name and password and it doesn't help. Finally, I went to the upgraded system and changed my password, used it to be sure it worked and then went to a remote computer on the same LAN and I still can't get in.

No firewalls, no internet security on any machine.

I don't know if this in relevant; but, the upgrade was done with a Student/Teacher XP Pro disk and it hasn't been activated yet. I don't want to activate until I'm sure I want to keep the upgrade on that machine.

Hello all,

Question regarding upgrading RAM for my laptop.

This is my setup:
- Toshiba laptop L755-1D5
- Intel Core i7-2670
- 4 gig ram
- Windows Home Premium 64 Bit

So I wanted to add some more RAM (2GB) and I ordered some named Ramaxel "RMT1970ED48E8F1333".
The problem is that it doesn"t get recognized in Windows and in the BIOS.

What I did:

- I swapped 4GB and the new 2GB because I have 2 slots. BIOS still showed 4GB.
- I solely used the 2GB but the system won't boot up.
- I updated the BIOS, no use.
- The "Intel Turbo boost" is enabled.
- The "Maximum memory" option in the boot options tab of msconfig is disabled.

I used CPU-Z to find out if Windows recognizes the added RAM and it does.
Both RAM are SO-DIMM, DDR3 SDRAM which use a memory speed of DDR3-1333 and are 64 bit.

I saw that the Windows 7 Home Premium can have more than 4 gig ram.

Someone has an idea of what could be the root cause of Windows/BIOS not recognizing my added RAM?

The person who finds the solution is golden!

brgds

A:Toshiba Laptop RAM Upgrade not recognized in windows

Hello and welcome stoes now mate when you order comments it is always a good idea to check the Toshiba site for compatibility and when you are checking you need to quote the PART NO: as in my pic as that denotes where it was made and where it was made for .

A good way of telling what you have in RAM and if it is even compatible with the other - is to use my ditty here and in PART B: you will see VERY detailed info on the RAM sticks see my pic - you will need to scroll down the screen to see it all. You might even see they are not really close in the specs

Personally I do not like mixing brands and one large stick is always better than two smaller ones because it will be the most matched in specs.

Using HW Info

PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < download theright bit version and close the right hand window select Sensors and scrolldown to the power section where you will see what the volts are doing see mypic. Now the section you want will be labelled - fpr example Asus boardsusually have "Nuvoton" and Gigabyte boards "ITE" in anycase the section you want will have Vbatt or VBAT in it (dead give away)
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for thatbut for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main lefthand side panel
FOR OTHER COMPONENTS
PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the compone... Read more

I just upgraded to Windows 10 as I planned to use the weekend to sort out any issues I might encounter during the upgrade. Well boy did I ever. My Seagate 3TB drive decided it no longer wanted to be recognized by Windows anymore. It shows up as a failed/deactivated drive in Disk Management as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/5EOU4Jf.png It also shows up in Speccy as a physical drive. I currently have 2TB of data on there (including an OS image I did just before the upgrade as an extra prep step), so reformatting the volume is not an option until I get the data off.

Any advice on how to recover my data?

So, I have a T7400 Precision Workstation that came with 8 GB of RAM - Filling DIMM slots 1-4.  Works fine.
I ordered this kit:<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

Installed it in DIMM slots 5-6.  Memory Info in the BIOS sees the DIMMs as being installed but reports the total RAM as still being 8 GB instead of 12 GB.
Windows Vista x64, when going to properties of the System, says 12 GB, but when looking in Task Manager, only shows 8 GB.
Any ideas?

Hello,
Recently I bought the Dell Inspiron 7559 (gaming one).
It has the option to add a SSD drive. I bought a m.2 SSD 256gb drive from Plextor.
See link for the version. The BIOS and Windows both don't recognize the SSD.
I have put it in and out several times. Updated BIOS / Resetted BIOS. It just won't recognize it.
Do I have to tweak any settings in BIOS for the SSD slot to "activate"?
I thought this was a plug and play thing. How can I get this to work?
Note: I also have my HDD still plugged cuz it has everything on it (windows etc).
I want to convert windows to the SSD if it CONNECTS EVER.
SSD:
Help would be appreciate SOOO MUCH.

Thanks in regards.

That's a PCIe SSD -- this system supports mSATA (SATA 6G), not PCIe.  You'll need to exchange the drive for an M.2 SATA/SATA6G version.

Hi all,
I recently bought two 4GB Samsung memory bars SO-Dimm PC3 10600S 1333MHz and installed them in my Dell Inspiron 14 N411Z.
Spec wise these should fit but the machine only recognizes one bar.
I have already updated the BIOS but cannot find the remapping option there. I also check my msconfig if my memory was set to a certain limit there but it wasn't.
Does anybody have an idea how to get the machine to accept the second bar? There seems to be no technical reason why this should not work.
/Cheers E.Schad

A:Dell Inspiron 14 N411Z Memory Upgrade (2x4GB Samsung SO-DIMM 1333MHz) - only 4GB recognized

Try each module in each socket - if both work in one socket but not the other, you have a bad socket.  If one module doesn't work in either socket, you have a bad module.
This is also an older system, so if both modules and sockets appear to work, check the specs on the chips mounted on the module - the older system may have trouble with newer high-density RAM.

I tried replacing the hard drive on my Inspiron 9300 with a 200G drive.  The administrative computer tools in Windows XP recognized it, but the BIOS showed it as 130G or so.  I finally had to replace the drive with a smaller one.  I had the latest BIOS version.  Is there a BIOS fix that will allow the larger hard drive to be used?

Not on the 9300s that use EIDE (parallel ATA) drives, no - the limit is 137G in BIOS setup.

I need some advice about the displays for the x270 ? is the HD display on the x270 an IPS? I didn?t find this info here https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/ThinkPad-X270/p/20HNCTO1WWENUS0/customize?...! My current x240 with has HD resolution (I can?t tell if it?s IPS or not) model 20ALCTO1WW ? I?m considering replacing it with the x270.I?ve heard good things about the FHD display but I?m concerned that with the FHD panel my font size will be too tiny for my 50+ year old eyes in its native resolution. I?ve heard that scaling the display results in suboptimal rendering/quality of text/fonts. Has anyone looked at both versions of the display? How do they compare? I?ll be using the system for mostly coding/writing and perhaps watching some videos. No Graphics or PS intensive work. Might hook it up to the tv from time to time (not that often) The display on the x240 isn?t the greatest (could be brighter for sure) but it works fine, so I could probably do fine with the same type for the x270 ? or is there something that I ought to consider? Thanks! PS: FWIW, I?m planning to get the i5-7300 model with 16 GB RAM and the 500 GB drive (that I plan to replace with a standard SSD 500 GB or 1TB drive ? hopefully not a problem).

Had similarities on my pc.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
