Help with Ad-aware SE Personal and Spybot SD

Q: Help with Ad-aware SE Personal and Spybot SD

Ok normally I rely on my brother to fix problems on my pc but even he can't work out whats wrong. I simply cannot run the 2 above files. I also can't run WinRAR. I have windows XP and I try to do a virus, spybot and ad-aware scan at least once evey 2 weeks and I'm worried that these two security programs aren't working.

Can anyone think of anything which may be causing this problem?

Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm in deep shiznit. I've tried running Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot, and Norton Antivirus and nothing is working. Every time I reboot, I have a 100 new spyware/adware programs and I can't even use my net. I tried deleting some of the programs I recognized from my HijackThis log, but they just popped up again the next time I opened my browser.

I am sorry if this question has been asked but I am unable to find an answer so far. So what I am very curious about is what exactly is the difference between Ad-Aware SE Personal and Ad-Aware 2007 Free? And why does bleepingcomputer.com link you to the Ad-Aware SE Personal while going directly to Lavasoft you are directed to download Ad-Aware 2007 Free and can't even download the SE Personal version unless it is Enterprise. But then the link from bleepingcomputer does take you to a place ON the Lavasoft website that does offer the SE Personal version. Very confusing! Any answers or links to a previously answered thread would be most helpful and much appreciated!

I just noticed today that Lavasoft has stopped supporting Ad-Aware SE Personal, and in order to get newer definition updates, you must upgrade to Ad-Aware 2007. I was wondering if there was a site where I could download updated definition files, without upgrading to the latest version. Thanks for any help!

Recently I tried the newer version of Ad Aware2007 on my HP Pavillion with Vista Home Premium, and as stated elsewhere, it was too much of a resource hog, and I removed it from my computer. I currently use Super Antispyware along with AVG Free anti spyware. Today while doing some maintenance on my computer I discovered that I still had the software for my older version of Ad Aware SE Personal downloaded, so I ran the .exe file, installed, and ran a full scan. I always liked this program for anti spyware. My question is, would this be something to keep even though it is outdated and may not be supported by Lavasoft anymore?

If there are current users of this software, or others that have good ideas/thoughts, please feel free to respond. Thank you.

Well, I may have answered part of my question, as a visit to the Lavasoft home page states that as of yesterday, there will be no updates to the definitions made available to Ad Aware SE Personal, so that may do it for me. Any replys are still welcome, thanks.

I hardly ever use it. I pretty much keep it around in case I ever find myself concerned about something. I try to remember to update the definitions about once a month, but twice today (once this morning, and now tonight), I get "error retrieving update". I was able to go to the web site, download the definitions as a file, and manually place them in the program.

Just wondering, before I go starting to un/reinstall the program, if anyone else was having this problem (i.e., is the problem on "their end", and not mine?).

Thank you to all who take the time to reply.

I just wanted to know, if paying for Ad-aware Professional is worth it or not . What's the difference? Who here actually have Ad-aware Professional??

A:Ad-aware Pro or Personal

The major difference is the professional edition has real time protection that works more or less like your anti-virus running in the background and has some other (redundant) utilities. I have not tried the professional edition.

I am about to upgrade from Ad-Aware 6.0 to Ad-Aware SE Personal. I have already downloaded the latest version of the free software. I want to know if I should first un-install the old version, or the new version will automatically install itself over the old version. I certainly do not want to keep two different versions of Ad-Aware in my computer. (It looks like I am the last person in this world who is going to do this upgrade!)

I would recommend uninstalling the previous version first, just to you could get a clean install of SEPersonal. I find there are fewer problems, as a rule, when you do a clean installation.

I want to install Ad-Aware SE Personal (free) on my brother's computer because I'm convinced he has some spyware issues. Unfortunately, he is unable to access any internet sites besides his homepage and sites on his favorites list. If he types in an address or uses the Google Toolbar, the result is always "Page Cannot Be Displayed".

I know it isn't a problem with the internet because his machine is routered with mine and my internet is ok. I've also reset the router properties on his computer but that didn't solve anything. I think something is stopping his internet from working, and in the past, doing spyware scans usually resolves the problem. But he is running Ad-Aware 6, which the most recent definitions are from October of last year.

So what I want to do is install Ad-Aware SE on his computer, but since he can't access the internet, I can't. The only other way I can think of is if I saved the installer .exe on a floppy and then pasted it on his machine and then installed it.

The problem is that the download for Ad-Aware SE is 2.81mb. That is too big to fit on a floppy. I tried to compress it with WinZip but for some reason I couldn't.

Is there any way I could compress the .exe enough to fit on a floppy or is there somewhere where I can get it that is zipped to be under 1.44mb?

Hi, Try running AVG in Safe Mode>

to get to Safe Mode, tap the F8 key quickly several times when you start up or restart the computer, just as you see any text on the screen....you should then get the startup menu, select Safe Mode (only) with arrrow key, then hit Enter...give it plenty of time to reach the desktop.

You may not have the latest updates: you can add them manually if you have not ever done them, even tho you just installed it, there will be some: here is how to manually update it:

To install, unzip into your Ad-aware porgram folder and restart the program.

Try running it in safe mode, also when you get to around 50 items, stop the scan let if fix those then start the scan again, repeating until you make it through an entire scan.

Also your version of HJT is out of date. Delete that one and get the new one.

Allow it to save to your desktop. Double click on the downloaded file and choose "unzip".

Now open Windows explorer and go to program files, Hijackthis, and double click on Hijackthis.exe in the right window pane. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button.

This will open notepad. Copy and paste the contents of notepad back here and someone will be happy to review it.

I have been having the same problem as one of the other posters to this forum. I am getting the antivirus and winfixer popups as well. I ran Ad-Aware SE Personal which I had download a few weeks ago. Part way through the scan it crashed the computer. I thought the Ad-Aware SE Personal was corrupted maybe. So, when I rebooted the computer, I uninstalled it and tried to download it from the download.com site. When I said OK, it said thank you for downloading the software; but the software is nowhere to be found on the desktop. Any ideas on what I should do? Try redownloading it (see link below). It could be spyware blocking it if it still won't work.

Just to make sure it's not a virus, run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus. Select the Autoclean option if you use TrendMicro. Make sure System Restore is disabled if you have Windows ME/XP.

About a year ago, my Ad-Aware SE Personal stopped opening. I do not recall anything I may have done to cause this, as it always worked fine. Whenever I tried to use it, after a few moments of trying to open, a message would tell me that Ad-Aware will not open because it may already be in use.

So, I tried opening it as Administrator- still no success.

Then I tried to uninstall it, and it would not uninstall. I also tried installing the new version in the hope that it would successfully uninstall what I currently have and cleanly install the new version; however, it is always unsuccessful. I get these messages:

There are several alternatives you can use to uninstall Ad-Aware SE: * Click "Uninstall Ad-Aware" in the Lavasoft folder of your Start menu. * If you are unable to do that, open your control panel, click "Add/remove programs," and locate Ad-Aware SE. * Another method to uninstall is to locate and double-click the file "unwise.exe" (the .exe may not be shown). You should be able to find this file in C:\program files\lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE [Personal/Plus/Professional]\.If the above alternatives do not work, or you get a message saying, "Can?t find Install.log," you will need to manually uninstall the software. To do this: * Click on "My Computer" and locate your Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE folder (C:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware). * Run the file "unregaaw.exe". * Delete the entire Ad-Aware SE folder. * Delete your Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE link in your Start menu (if present). * Delete the Ad-Aware SE icon (s) from your desktop (if present). * Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name] \Application Data\Lavasoft" and delete the entire Lavasoft folder. * Empty your trash bin. * Reboot your computer.

I don't know about installation problems - why don't you check the forums at Lavasoft?

I'm afraid Lavasoft has been having all kinds of problems with AdAware 2007 updates recently. Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

I ran AA 6.0 for the first time this morning. It found 48 entries, wow I was thinking this really is an improved Tool. Turns out 39 of the entires AA 6.0 found were backup files I have stored in Spybot Recovery. Is this a common result of AA 6.0 finding Spybot backup files anyone may have come across? 8 entries were cookie files that I deleted and the last one was a Reg Key that I sent to the Ignored List. I then rebooted and ran AA 6.0 again. It found only 1 entry, unfortunately it was the same Reg Key that I sent to the Ignored list. I then ran Spybot to get a comparison. Spybot found 10 usage files and 0 spyware files.

To me the new AA 6.0 has alot of bells and whistles but the results are the same as AA 5.83 finding 1 file to every 10 that Spybot finds. Plus AA 6.0 takes about 10 mins to run compared to 2 mins for Spybot. Does anyone feel the same way I do?

Any feed back will be much appreciated.

For anti virus, I use AVG free on Vista, and so far havent had a prob. Seems to be one of the better ones to use Ad Aware and spybot are still, I think, some of th ebetter blockers; if yo uwant one, they are probably as good as anything else.

There's a list of some of the applications that they installed and tested. I was amazed that there are some that I have used, that are supposed to stop some of what they are installing, ie, Panicware.

Thanks to Warp2Search for this info.

A:Ad-aware vs Spybot

SpyBot hands down is better because it detects everything that AdAware does and more, which makes using AdAware pretty pointless. Use SpyBot along with Hijackthis and you should be good to go. Those are the two best tools that I have found.

This is getting ridiculous! I've already gotten rid of the mysearch and whazit toolbars last night but there don't seem to be any easy solutions to fixing this one. And, I do NOT have this "round icon in the taskbar" that I can supposedly right click on to uninstall. All of the ones there are completely familiar. Spybot and Ad-aware detected parts of it at first, then I guess cleaned up those parts, but the toolbar is still working after reboot. They aren't detecting anything now (Ad-Aware keeps crashing, however, so it hasn't finished a complete scan yet.)

-The affected browser is IE 6.0.28
-This toolbar is apparently called aieepdnzfnu.
-I'm running XP Home...I'm going to try a System Restore but I'm not sure that will fix this problem.

Also, does anyone know if Opera7 is vulnerable to this? I've been using it since to search for help, which often leads me to pages that Spybot warns me (when I'm using IE at least) are trying to install "c2.lop."

Hi, How are you?

I am writing because I want to install a program that clean my system of all the spyware programs, but I have to decide between Ad-aware or spybot search and destroy, and I need some help because I don't know wich ones is better.

If somone could help me deciding, or if someone have a good recomendation of any other program, that could help me too.

Normally people run both. Why do you have to decide between them?

Its not like antivirus or firewall software, which runs all the time in the background and means you should only have one of each running.

AdAware and SpyBot are only run when you start them. Then you close them afterwards.

Are these programs relevant today?  I've mainly switched over to tools like Superantispyware and Malwarebytes, but just curious if they are still good tools to be used.

mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D (or Ad-Aware) due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products). Further, most people don't understand how to use Spybot's TeaTimer and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. If you don't have understanding how a particular security tool works, then you probably should not be using it. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and in some cases it will even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools. As for Ad-Aware.Ad-Aware...have gone into a downhill spiral over the past five years and recently sold the company to Solaria... I have upgraded to the latest version of Ad aware, SE personal, and have also downloaded Spybot. Are the two able to be used together or will they conflict with each other?

Also Spybot appears unable to clear a piece of spyware from my system it is: "retrieve, executable C://windows/Access.exe. Is there a reason for this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, just a quick question. I have turned off the firewall that came with my new computer. I am using Windows XP. Do I need to install Sygate also or will Spybot and Ad Aware be enough to keep me protected?

I ran Ad-Aware and it removed over 70 unwanted programs. I had to reboot for it to remove one stubborn item. I then ran SpyBot and it found 31 more problems. I cleaned them both. Everything seems to be working fine now but when I booted up this morning, I received a message window which said,

108searchassistant has been inadvertantly removed by a thirdparty program. You may not run properly while using the internet. It gave me three options: 1. To reinstall 108searchassistant. 2. To reinstall and run a cleanup program of searches ledt behind, and 3. To remind me later. I chose #3 just in case this is a ligit program which Ad-Adware or SpyBot removed. Is 108SearchAssistant spyware or a necessary compontant to use the internet properly. I am using IE6.

Looks like there is still some link to 108searchassistant still hanging around that was not removed by Spybot or AdAware. That message is just a nag screen that hopes you will reinstall it.

You may want to run HiJack This and post a log in the HJT forum. Instructions and download locations available there.

If you are using Internet Explorer suggest you do this:

In Internet Explorer go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and take the check mark from Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer) and Enable Install On Demand (Other). The consequence of this will be that you will begin to see Security Warnings when something tries to install on your computer. Unless it is something you want to install (which happens rarely) always say no.
