I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a T400 6475 laptop that ive used for quite awhile and i loved it. All of a sudden I boot it up and get the start screen and that's it. No beeps, hdd runs, dvd drive powers up, fan runs. Reseated memory, hdd, even cpu. So I'm assuming a corrupted bios or damaged mb. So, when i do a search here for T400 or 6475 tje search returns nothing. What is the procedure to recover frim a corrupt bios?  I'm assuming its ctrl-some key, power on, with  usb memory stick installed with simethong on it? Just need the info.

My IBM Thinkpad 770 has started to power on......and shut down...on its own. Would the internal power supply unit by the issue? Or may it be just the on/off switch going bad? If anybody has experienced this before, I'd appreciate you fix info! Thanks!

I don't see how it would from OFF, but if you have the notebook on Standby or Hibernate, then yeah its possible.

Hi guys, I've got a Thinkpad S1 Yoga 8GB i5 with a standard HDD 500GB and what I've notice is:one barely notices that the HDD is spinning when starting up or when left idle after booting.I can move the laptop around and the HDD is always as quiet. I bought another Thinkpad S1 Yoga 4GB i3 with the same standard HDD 500GB and I'm noticing the following differences, so wondering if there's some kind of a problem with that hard drive? As soon as you power it up the HDD starts spinning and it's quite loud (compared to the laptop above, ie, it's not really loud as such, but compared to my 1st one you can definately notice that it's spinning whereas the other one is almost always quiet). It keeps continuously spinning once it's booted up, even when idle (and even though the task manager and resource monitor doesn't indicate anything using the disk, it's reported as 0% usage a lot of times)then when I move the laptop the most minimum, the HDD stops spinning and then starts again, so if I'm using it in on the move, you can notice that the HDD is continuously stopping and then starting, which seems quite weird to me. I had never noticed that before. I've tried Win 7 pro, Win 8.1 pro and Win 10 pro and it's happening in all of them. The Lenovo diagnostics for that HDD don't report any problem either.... Any idea if the 2nd HDD is behaving correctly? or anything I could change to make it work like my 1st laptop? Thank you!

Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

I have a T400 ThinkPad upgraded to Windows 10 that suddenly had a blank screen and no lights except for wifi.On closer inspection I discovered the backlight is not lit during startup, whilst ThinkPad splash and window symbol are displayed but then, screen goes blank and then I hear the windows startup sound.Displays perfectly on an external monitor. I have replaced inverter, lcd cable and screen .... nothing works! I'm not sure if I should just resell the parts I bought and get another laptop .... can I transfer Windows 10 to another machine or is there another fix I could try? I don't have much money.Any help appreciated.

I put my Thinkpad T400 in hibernate, but next morning I could not boot. When I press the power button, the lights below the screen turning on and I hear the sound of the hard disk, and the turns off. I do not even see anything on the screen; it is just black. The process keeps on repeating in a loop, unless I press the power button to turn off. I have tried the static charge removing trick. I have also removed the hard disk put it back again, but did not work either.  Please help.

Also during this time the bluetooth LED on the inverter is on. A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.
If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.
Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.
SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Hi Punittiwari3353,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!
Best regards,

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Shouldn't happen. I'd first make sure it's securely plugged in, look for any frayed wiring to it, not a lot of debris building up around it, and then I'd be looking to replace it pronto!

Hi, Ive had my laptop (hp pavillion g6) for almost 5 years now and have never had a major issue. Recently, when using my laptop (just for tasks such as browsing the web and word processing) the fan whirs for a few seconds then stops for a few seconds, then whirs then stops constantly. It is becoming quite irritating! This happens both unplugged and plugged in and in various locations. I wondered if anyone had any ideas on why this may be and a way to either prevent it or see if the fan is broken? Thanks!

I just bought a new mobo, processor and ram for my PC, kept the PSU, DVD, Video card and HDD.

After replacing everything, I started it up and got the failure no bootable system found. Since I replaced so much, I thought it possible this could happen but I planned ahead to reinstall the OS anyway.

I put in the windows disk, installed windows, restarted and booted into windows. Put the mobo driver CD in, ran the multi-driver installer, installed all the drivers and restarted and got the no boot disk error again.

Went into BIOS, made sure HDD was detected and the primary boot device. Everything A-OK. Then I restarted and now it starts and within 3 seconds powers down. Holds about 5 seconds then tries to start again, but powers down after 3 seconds. It did this about 4-5 times before I shut it down.

Not really sure where to go from here. Originally I had 3 HDDs all hooked up, so I took all them off and only left the main OS and DVD drive, so everything but the core hardware is installed.

A:PC starts, stops, starts, stops, etc...

I've made some headway. After posting this, I took about an hour break and came back, hit the power button and booted right up. Did some more installs, restarted a few times, good to go.

Then I started hooking devices back up. I had 2 more HDD's, one SATA and one IDE. Sata worked fine, but then when i hooked up the IDE I get the boot failure error again. HDD boot order is correct, but still nothing. It's the only IDE component I have but never seems to work.

Also, after I started trying to hook it up I got the power on/off again. Sometimes it never starts, some times it powers up/down once or twice then boots on the subsiquent one. Seems to work fine when it's finally up though. I don't think it's a power issue since I can keep the IDE HD powered up, I just can't connect the cable, but it would seem to be.

At first my computer would not reboot. Then I unplugged everything and took out the memory chips and moved it so I could get to it. When I plugged everything back in the computer would start-up and shut-down in 5sec. intervals. It only stopped when I unplugged the ATX_12V power supply to the motherBoard. It is the power for the CPU. It is a Gigabyte 695p motherboard. I do not know if it is the power supply or motherboard or CPU chip. Can you help me?

A:Computer starts and stops

First you can try taking out the memory sticks again and re-seat them and see if the problem goes away.

Another thing, try clearing the cmos and see if that helps as well. Refer to your motherboard manual for the cmos jumper location.

Hi Folks,

My daughter's Dell computer has run fine up until recently. When she starts her computer, everything starts up normally, but then all the icons on the desktop vanish, only to reappear 10 - 15 seconds later. This continues to occur for about 5-8 minutes, and then they just disappear altogther. I can make them reappear at that point by using the Task Manage run command. When I open Task Manager and watch the processes, explorer.exe disappears and reappears (in concert with the icons of course). Programs run once opened, but the desktop continues to disappear and reappear.

She was running for a period of time without virus software (I know, I know, what was she thinking). I have loaded Norton Anti-Virus, updated virus definitions and scanned her machine (22 viruses found and quarantined), but the intermittent explorer.exe thing is still there.

Any suggestions prior to me just wiping the disk clean and reloading Windows? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to TSF

The security team can help you with those. You are probably still infected. We cannot assist you with this issue here in the Microsoft Support Forum.

Please read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

When I was running OCCT test this mouring and about 40 min. in the test the video would stop and go to a black screen and 1 min later it was back and the test was still running normal and the test ran to the end without any errors. The test I was running was on OCCT was linpack not the video test. The temps where fine not to hot. It is only OC about 5% the system is running fine without any problem and this is the first time this has happend?? Maybe it is normal while running a test like that??

Hi folks....
Here is my problem. When I turn on my computer, It powers up and before anything flashes onto the screen, it just dies,(everything turns off except monitor). I then turn the switch back off and on and then it powers up normally. This has only happened twice, last time was this morning.
Any idea what might be happening? My system is a home built I got from Sis-in-law. It is a pentium 100mhz w/ 1gig scsi hdd and scsi cd-rom with 32 megs ram. Like I said it works now since I'm posting but could this be a warning? Thanks in advance.

I'd say that your power supply is on the verge of going out. Luckily for those older system power supply's are not expensive. But i'd look into buying a new one soon. Hope this helps.

Hi, a friend has asked me to look at a machine which according to her 'when I go onto the internet, does not work'. I have little more to go on than that, but my first thoughts after checking device manager (all is ok) was to check for a virus. I've downloaded on another machine the latest version of MBAM and installed this fine. When I try to execute it though, it tells me the database is 70 days out of date and if I click yes to update, the program stops. No messages or anything, just stops. If I don't update it presents me with the main MBAM screen, but when I click 'scan', the program again just stops.

Grateful for any suggestions.

Ok, so I've got a new PC, first time I turned it on, it totally stopped working, can't move mouse, can't use keyboard, you know, totally blocked. So I've restarted it and then it was okay, so I've ignored it. Now, after 3-4 days, avast detected some malware, around 22, I've choose to "move to chest", but 4 files couldn't be moved, so I choose to delete, I got a message that it would be deleted after reboot, so I've restarted it and same thing happened, PC totally blocks, programs start turning on (Skype, Avast...etc) after they turned on, PC blocks. Anyway, I tought that avast, since it was free and all, was actually reporting files that aren't actually viruses, but are important for windows to work, so now it blocks all the time, when It starts up, because those files were important, tought that's my guess, you know the best.

Now I'm in safe mode (with networking) to try and find some help, everything's okay now, so it might be some program that's causing this when I start it normally.

I have windows xp sp 3, AMD Athlon II x4 630, 2.8 ghz, 3 gb of ram. Tell me if you need anything else?

I need this really fast, it's important, so please help me as soon as you can, I need my PC. Or at least tell me if you can help, so I don't have to carry it to PC service, they really keep it for a long time, like for month, it's annoying.

Thank you. Also, a guy who installed everything made a backu... Read more

Window xp Pro when on any internet site videos stop and start, how can I fix?

A:Video stops and starts

This is usually caused by a slow internet connection. What are your computer specs? Right click MY Computer/Properties and report the Processor speed, and the RAM (memory) installed. Then open My Computer right click the C: drive/Properties and report the amount of Free Space.
Now go to speedtest.net and report your internet speed. You can also download the latest Adobe Flash and Java.

So I have a HP CQ60 215dx. When I first plug it in its starts to charge the battery and then stops cold. The battery monitor shows charging and the l.e.d. on the front shows charging then goes out.Two different adapters and the same thing. If I unplug it it will charge for a second and stop. Flashed the bios. Did the unplug adapter remove battery and press start button deal and still same thing. If I keep doing it for a long time the battery will show a charge improvement. Think it's the M.B.? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to those who tried to help with my last comp. But it was the hard drive like you said. This si the newer model I acquired and still having computer issues H.E.L.P.

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 running Win XP It keeps shutting itself down. Basically, it will shut itself off with increasing frequency, and then, at some point, it will shut off and refuse to restart. When I try to start it, the fan turns on, but nothing else no hard drive, no monitor. If I hold down the power button, it will just continue to restart and do the same thing. It takes sometimes 20-30 tries to get it up and running again. Once it's on, it's okay, but obviously something is messed up. I have checked the hard drive with CHKDSK and all is ok. I used a program from Toshiba to check the memory, hard drive, video, audio etc and all is ok. The heatsink is not blocked and I don't see anything fried on the motherboard. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. I am about to pull out my hair on this one. I forgot to mention I did a defrag and virus scan while the computer was up and running. I also checked msconfig to see if there was anything running that I could eliminate to correct the problem. I looked in control panel to be sure there were no unrecognized programs loaded.
Thanks in advance.

Please help;
When trying to access my office's network using a VPN connection (FW-1 secure client) I am able to validate my password exchange get some data and then... it stops. From that point the connection over VPN is not working anymore.
Regular internet connection works like a champ - Only VPN is problematic.
It happens on both 98 and XP machines, across ADSL and Cablemodem connections.

First of all, you CANNOT post similiar threads multiple times.. So please don't. Be patient and let give us some time to answer your question or solve your problem.

Secondly, you have to be more specific about your current situation. Be sure to open up necessary ports if you have a firewall, and double check your IP addresses.

I am experiencing a constant and most annoying issue with my new computer with a new Ultimate x64 Vista install.

The thing just "Hangs." I can be going along, often in a browser, either IE7, now 8 and Firefox, or in other programs and such, and the thing just stops. The sidebar CPU meters will be slowed and the graph drops to the bottom, the Network Meter activity drops to the bottom too. Often the background stops but not always and the same for the second hand on the clock. The circular Aero spins and the windows are unresponsive, often the window is reported as "Not Responding" and if something does respond to a mouse click only the button moves but any corresponding program action doesn't happen.

The thing will then just sit there like this for half a minute, a minute, sometimes a minute and a half, and then suddenly eveything starts running again and zooms right along. Till the next time which could be the next time I click on something or a few minures later, or longer or shorter.

I am coming to my wits end. I am almost beginning to believe the Mac guy on the commercial.

I have downloaded and run the System Info program.

Can someone please help?

Hello all,

I tried to install office 2003 professioanl onto a notebook that had a 60 day trial of office on it. Now Outlook 2003 professioanl starts, then disappears and stops after a few seconds.

The event viewer tells me that "
"the MOF file created for Outlook service could not be loaded. The error code returned by the MOF compiler is contained in the record data. Before the performace counters of this service can be collected by WMI the MOF file will need to be loaded manually. Contact the vendor..."
I have tried multiple install/removal.repairs with no sucess. Deleted the pst files, etc. I'm stuck. Has anyone been here?

Thanx in advance
Peter Maxfield
