Backing up files with TDL3/TDL4 problem

Q: Backing up files with TDL3/TDL4 problem

Hi,
How do I know which files I can back up without infecting my external drive? I have been reading that Norton Internet Security and Malwarebyte can't detect this rootkit. So if I scan with these products and they say they are not infected how can I trust them. I would like to back up my files in case I need to format my computer to get rid of the rootkit.
I will appreciate any help or suggestions on how to back-up my files and not infect the external drive.
Thanks,
Karen

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

Should you decide to reformat or do a factory restore due to malware infection, you can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml ) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executables inside them as some types of malware can penetrate compressed files and infect the .exe files within them. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by hiding a file extension or adding to the existing extension as shown here (click Figure 1 to enlarge) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. If you cannot see the file extension, you may need to reconfigure Windows to show file name extensions. Then make sure you scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive. If your CD/DVD drive is unusable, another word of caution if you are considering backing up to an external usb hard drive as your only alternative. External drives are more susceptible to infection and can become compromised in the process of backing up data. I'm not saying you should not try using such devices but I want to make you aware of all your options and associated risks so you can make an informed decision if its worth that risk. How and Where to backup your files in XP or VistaHow to Backup and Restore in Windows 7How to use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from your dead Windows ComputerAgain, do not back up any files with the following file extensions: exe, .scr, .ini, .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .xml, .zip, .rar, .cab as they may be infected.

This is on my Mum's Sony Vaio laptop, she got a warning that looked like it was from AVG (free version was installed), telling her that some program had to be installed to clean an infection. After that the computer became unresponsive and once rebooted, AVG kept finding viruses upon running a full scan. I un-installed AVG and installed MSE, which seemed to take care of all the 'normal' viruses, but I keep getting a Windows crash error reporting message saying that the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has crashed. After running combofix, DDS and GMER it seems that the laptop is infected with a rootkit.

Really hope you guys can help me remove it, and many thanks for any help in advance.

I believe that I have 2 computers infected with the TDL4 bootkit and TDL3 rootkit. I am in the process of collecting the information needed for analysis, as described in the "Preparation Guide". While I am gathering his information, can someone comment if I need to take any preventive action with the online accounts I access? From what I have read, these two pices f malware are used to send spam and open backdoors for other malware infections. I have not read anything about the bootkit/rootkit containing keyloggers. The presence of a keylogger would spur me to kake immediate action to close/transfer a few accounts. Also, I would like to have additional information concerning how the bootkit and rootkit infect computers. I have several USB storage devices that I used with the infected computers. A:TDL4 bootkit and TDL3 rootkit

looks like you have already run both TDSSkiller and combofix.infected with the TDL4 bootkit and TDL3 rootkitIf this is the case I always post this:You had a rootkit on your machine. They hide malicious files and components from traditional antivirus/antimalware software. They bury themselves deep in the operating system. Special software is needed to detect and remove them. Even if symptoms are gone and logs are clean its still not a 100% guarantee that your machine is clean once a rootkit has been detected and removed. In my opinion you should consider a reformat/reinstall of Windows. The best source for information on how to do this would be the computer manufacturers website.

I had a thread on this before w/no helpful responses. Thought I'd try again. My computer w/VISTA is set up to backup files on Sunday night. For some reason, this can't be done because the computer apparently can't tell there is a formatted disk in the disk drive. I have tried 3 different never-used-before disks. I formatted them even tho my computer also doesn't automatically give me formatting options. I can burn photos, documents to disks but the backup doesn't work.

Half of the folders are empty! Just the empy folder got copied. Any ideas/suggestions? The project covered about 2 discs. I looked at the 2nd disc and more than half of the folders were empty. Tried the first disk and each time I tried opening a file it stopped responding and eventually Windows Explorer shut itself down.

I tried the fourth time and autoplay kicked in and when I tried to click on a file to see if it was actually on the disc it asked me if I wanted to retrieve it and send it back to it's previos location. Isn't there a way to just make a DVD+R that has all the files on it so I can just open the file I want like you used to do on a diskette or a CD-R???

I might just have to say screw it and go get an external hard drive because I'm about to throw my laptop out the window because of all my problems with the stupid DVD burner! UGH!!!

A:Tried backing up files using Roxio Creator Classic- one problem

Donít know about Creator Classic, but Iíd guess that the Laptop burner is OK, it was just given bad instructions.

External HDs are the way to go. May I suggest, shopping for an External HD Enclosure - then shopping for sales on internal HDs. You can get more gigs for the buck this way.

Donít throw the laptop out the window, you could hurt someone. Ship it to me instead.

I could also use some assistance in ridding myself of this TDSS pest. I had recently removed ave.exe (Vista Security Tool 2010) manually by using an online guide. Antivirus/Antispyware software also removed svchost.exe from a Windows temp directory, Hitman Pro found rk_remover.sys, and I also have an infected atapi.sys which I tried replacing through recovery console (not sure that it was successful, however). Lsi_sas.sys seems to be another problem file. Please let me know how I should proceed, and thanks in advance! I understand that HiJackThis is not really used here, so I will post a GMER log soon.

Do I back them up to the hard drive? That wouldn't seem right especially if my hard drive is about to crash, or do I back it up to some external drive? Also, is there a way I could transfer all of the files on this computer to another that I know to be good? What software/hardware would I need to do this? As you can see I'm not as computer savy as most. I am using XP Pro SP3. I would appreciate any help any of you cold give. Thanks.

If the hard drive is dying you'll have a limited number of chances to recover your data/back it up. So, don't use the computer any more than is absolutely necessary to recover your data.

The easiest way would be to backup your stuff to an external hard drive. You can use Windows Explorer to back it up by copying it to the external hard drive (the easiest and quickest way IMO).

Hi,

I built my system with two hard drives one for my opperating system and a second separate drive for all my files. Both drives are 500GB and as the one used for the opperating system only uses a fraction of the space availiable what I want to do is to back up everything that is on main file drive into a single folder in the spare space on my opperating system drive. Is there an easy way to do this? Does windows have a feature for doing this or do I have to get some third party software? Is there any decent free stuff?

It is always a good idea to make regular backups of your files and data. There have been a few instances where SP3 crashes the system. If not a complete back-up then at least back-up the "important stuff". Also see the following link.

SO, I thought it would be easy to follow the "Back up Wizard" but for some reason it won't recognize my DVD burner. It says to go to the removable storage service under system services of management console. How do I get there??? Anyone????

Yes, there is. Just go to the individual folder that houses your files.

can save the installation files.

Since you don't have an external drive you can use an online backup program such as Carbonite to backup your files. You can also back them up to CD or DVD.

I want to reinstall windows, but don't know how to go about backing up my important files. Is it as simple as right clicking and sending them to my external hard drive? Also, I've bought programs, so I want to make sure that I won't have to pay for them again should I re-install windows.

Do I have to back up the registry? Does reinstalling windows mean I have to or should reformat my hard drive?

btw, I read the sticky about reinstalling windows ( at least the first post)

A:backing up files

Backing up important files "simply" means to make a copy of them somewhere else. Can be an external hard drive, USB flash drive, CD, DVD, etc. Another hard drive is probably the most convenient, fastest and most reliable.

For your purchased programs make sure you still have the CDs/DVDs, or save the downloaded files and any keys or codes you need to prove that they are yours, or make sure you have the information and the right to download them again.

Don't save the registry; depending on your type of install you will get a "fresher" or brand new registry.

This paragraph gets into opinion and preferences. The best way to put your problems behind you (to make room for new ones) is to format your disk and then install Windows fresh. This is especially important to do if you had malware, as this will get rid of any remnants (except for what may be in your saved data). OTOH if you think you have a fairly good system but just need to "clean up" Windows you can try a repair install. When it works all your data and installed programs are preserved. The time I did this my only problem was that I had to reinstall my networked all-in-one printer.

Okay, I got a whole mess of avi. files in my computer.
I think they're clogging up too much space, so I want to... back them up. then delete the original files.

I'm having trouble however.

First of all, I don't know which type of cd I should use, Dvd-r, Dvd+r, dvd r/rw etc.

A best buy lady "reccomended" me to buy dvd-r... I don't know the drawbacks of it.

So I tried burning my avi files into the dvd r with nero, and it refused to.

so my questions are...

1. Which type of cd should i use?

2. Is dvd-r like... bad? Can you, when needed, copy the files in that backup cd into my computer?

3. In order to burn to dvd-r, do I have to change its video format? Cuz nero didn't accept avi, so I was wondering if I had to change file format.

4. Oh ya, now that I remember... I think Nero said something about the disk required is Dvd r/rw? I'm not sure... any suggestions?

I'll post anything up here if needed, such as the exact wordings of Nero's error message, etc.

My computer crashed recently and the OS (Windows XP Home) would not boot. Dell had me run a repair which got the computer up and running, but deleted the profile to which all my files were linked. When I boot up now, I am logged in with a Temporay Profile and cannot access any of my old files. But when I run DIR in dos, I can see them in my old folders so I think they are still entact. Is there any way for me to access them and copy them to a CD or a different hard drive?

Thanks!

Hey IAN

which do you want to do? clean install, or upgrade? clean install means re-installing your apps, upgrade doesnt.

I believe what you want to do can be done using the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" that is a "System Tool" in "XP."
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools> ---Transfer Wizard.

The suggested way to have your HD is your Win 7 and programs on one partition and your Docs (letters, pictures, music, etc) on a separate partition. You would just leave the D: drive as it is. == You would then need another HD (they can be purchased for under $50 for a fairly big one) to put your backups on. You would make two partitions on it and make a system image to backup the two partiions on your other HD. See this tutorial. System Image Recovery

Here is an email I received from a user concerning outlook 98. He is backing up his files on our network. Got any ideas????

I usually back up my computer before leaving on any trip just in case it's stolen from the airport or wherever. Just did another backup today and realized that my .pst file for e-mails shows a last modified date from March, 2002. I looked back to the previous backup that I did on 5/17 and this also had the .pst file with last modify date of March. Can someone help me figure out why my .pst file isn't the correct one?

As more fuel for you to investigate, I went to Start, Find, Files and Folders and did a search on *.pst. Only found one occurance in C:\Documents and it was the same one saying last updated on March 27, 2002.

i plan to purchase a new computer and will need to transfer files to the new from the old.

I will transfer My Documents and Internet bookmarks.

My concern is, can i also transfer any viruses etc to the new pc from the old.
Because of it's poor performance recently, i'm pretty sure i have some kind of problem that Anti virus, spybot etc has been unable to clean.

What precautions do i need to take to avoid passing the virus/ problems to the new pc?

thanks

A:Backing Up files

Be sure to thoroughly scan your folders both before and after the transfer. Be sure you have the most up-to-date virus definitions installed on the new machine before transferring anything or connecting to the net.

Generally speaking, few viruses or pieces of malware occupy Documents folders or internet bookmarks. They can't do much damage there and prefer the Windows folder or somewhere that they are more likely to be executed and hidden.

Hello,

I am prompted every so often to backup files to a CD/DVD writeable disc, which I do, and this causes me to have to buy more and more CD/DVD discs. I tried reformatting a past disc in order to erase stored information there and be able to use it once again to backup files but when I inserted the disc into drive E, I got an error message saying that the disc had data and I needed a blank/empty disc.

Any ideas?

Thanks. Jose

all guides and tools start with protecting your files.I can only download the software i need in safe mode. is backing up my files in safe mode going to protect everything that needs to be protected.

A:Backing up my files

1) What do you mean you can only download the software you need in safe mode? And WHAT software are we talking about?
2) Regardless of how you download anything, why do you have to backup in safe mode?
3) To answer your question directly, whatever you backup is backed up. But your question really isn't very clear.

What are you trying to do - EXACTLY - and how are you trying to do it?

Hi everybody :

Recently, I was backing up some .jpegs to disk. I was using Memorex CD-RW disk. But, I noticed that the PASTE function was missing. I had to OPEN the pics in Photoshop, then SAVE them to disk. It's much easier if I could just Drag-And-Drop the files. How do I add the PASTE function to the context menu ?
Thanks
garystan

A:Backing Up Files

I prefer to simply use a disc burning program and burn the files as data.

To use the drag and drop method, you are using packet writing ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_writing ) which can be troublesome.

You could start by troubleshooting with the first reply here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...e8404d8?auth=1

Also keep in mind that RW discs have a finite lifespan. I've had some that could be rewritten dozens of times, and some that only worked a few times.

On a side note, I've had terrible luck with Memorex and will no longer use them.

Hello,

I would like to backup my files using Backup and Restore by Windows 7 and I was wondering if a 64 gb flash drive would be enough space for a backup? Someone told me that the program compresses the files, i do not know if that is true or not but, If I right click on local disk drive it states that I have used 178gb of 288gb. I would really like to Backup just my music which is about 27gb and some other stuff which is which is about 10gbs and whatever Windows 7 needs to back up.

Specs
Windows 7 premium 64 bit duo core process
Intel Pentium CPU P6000 1.87ghz
4.0 gb ram

A:Backing up files

You probably could have found the answer to your problem with a little Internet search.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-and-restore-frequently-asked-questions

It is really dependent on the size of the files you are backing up. You can only compress certain types of files. You won't be able to compress binary type files like Images and Video.

Hi guys,

A:Backing Up Files

Do you have a CD burner? You can easily back up files there, especially if you have software to do so. Most computers come with something like Sonic or Nero and you need to back up any data that you do not want to use. This includes things like word processor files, pictures, bookmarks, address books, music, emails, and anything else you do not want to lose.

Although others use fancy backup programs, I simply copy the files to a CD. Of course, I keep my PC organized so that I know where everything is. Most people put things in My Documents and its subfolders, and that's a good place to start.

But how you do it depends entirely on what you're using.

For bookmarks, you would export your bookmarks from Internet Explorer, if that's what you're using. Export them to My Documents. If you're using Firefox, you'd start by clicking on "bookmarks," then click "manage bookmarks." Then go to "File" and "Export."

You may have to practice this. We can give you better information if we know what programs you've got and what you're using. For instance: Internet Explorer or Firefox or Netscape or something else? Outlook Express or Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird or Eudora or something else? Nero or Sonic or something else? . . . and so on.

depends really on what .......and how you want your backups.
you can just copy/paste them into a new folder or if you have a cd burner you could burn them to disk.
