Q: STUCK in safe mode boot, safe mode doesnt work and restarts, REPEAT

okay... so i was trying to get into safemode so i could run an antivirus scan, problem is whenever i tried going in safemode the blue screen would pop up and computer would restart. now for some dumb reason i thought maybe i could get in safemode if i used msconfig and selected safe mode from the boot menu. so the computer restarted and now it boots in safemode but the blue screen and restart happen everytime now. ive tried "start windows normally" but that boots in safemode.... ive tried "last known good config..." and that too boots in safemode. so now im stuck, i cant get on windows. any help please?

im willing to start over but i dont know how to do that from here

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

backstory:
the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

problems:
the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

I am new here. Hopefully someone can help me. My computer has several problems. The most serious is not being able to get Windows XP to load. I have tried booting in safe mode (F8) but I keep getting an error screen. I installed a game on the computer today that apparent has caused this problem. Any advice on how I can boot to safe mode to remove the program and do a system restore would be appreciated.

Hi
I have Thinkpad T43, with windows XP professional.

Since few days whenever i launched my ATI catalyst control center I would get BSOD and laptop will boot automatically and then everything would be fine.

Then while browsing my wife downloaded some media player exe, and since then my IE was redirecting to unknown sites (xalab etc) not to mention various ad pop-ups. One of the online video sites gave a message that I have TROJ/Rustok-N. (Also I would like to mention since couple of months my System Restore was not working although everything else was working fine)

I ran spybot, malawarebytes, trojanremover and removed whatever was reported. But the problem persisted, so I renewed my Norton Internet Security (actually got Norton 360), ran scans but it couldnt find anything.

Then I booted in safe mode and ran all these again, last thing I remember trojanremover prompted to remove something like sv~.exe and i did, when i restarted the system in normal mode I got BSOD and laptop rebooted, I disabled automatic restart on failure but it keeps on doing that.

I then went to Access IBM and restored by configuration which brings back the system files to previous state (the most latest point available was 07/2006)
I still got the BSOD while booting into normal mode, but safe mode was working fine.

I then went into safe mode and disabled couple of services on startup, then my laptop booted fine in normal mode, I found that now windows xp was reset to SP2, so i ran windows update w... Read more

Hi, today I decided to restart my PC but it got stuck at the "logging off" screen, so I just held down power button to turn it off.
When I tried turning it back on, it got stuck at the windows logo. Safe-mode won't work, nor will system recovery.Note: I had not made any hardware changes in the past 3 years. I also don't think I have made any big software changes in the past couple of weeks.

What I was doing before I decided to reboot:
I was reinstalling different versions of firefox because I was having flash issues (FF and Flash arent very compatible on some of the newer FF versions)

So I installed 30.0 and it asked me reboot to finish the installation and here I am. I don't think it's related, might be just a coincidence.

System recovery freezes after a while during the © Mircosoft Corporation screen with green loading bar. PC does not auto re-boot.
The little light that flickers when the PC is doing something is not lighting up during the loading screens. It flickers for the first couple of seconds and then just stops (or very faintly flicks every 3-4 secs) The loading screen animation then freezes after ~10-15 seconds.

Hi I had Uverse (new ISP) installed, and 5 mins after the tech left my screen went blank, and i've not been able to log back into the computer.

I've had a multitude of error messages, the first being: \winnt\system32\config\system is corrupted. Also the blue screen of death. I can't get it to start up in safe mode, and it when i ask it to start up in last good config the screen just goes black and the pc appears to just lock up.

The last codes I got frm the BSOD were as follows:

0xC0000005 0x80849902 0xF8988D48 0x00000000

I've also tried using the XP OS disk, and when i choose R i get the blue screen of death.

Sometimes it doesn't start up at all and i can't even get it to respond to PF8.

Any other suggestions? Appreciate any help!

by the way, the tech came back and said that no drivers were added, and I have also disconnected the new modem and my external hard drive but it didn't help

Hi.

It isn't intended to. Safe mode only loads the drivers needed to get to desktop in order to troubleshoot the basic operation of the system. You video driver is not even loaded. Instead, a very basic version is applied.

So the quick and short answer is that you can't run it in safe mode.

Soooooo,
i go to my friends today and shes starting up her windows and as soon as it starts the bar at the bottom i believe called explorer and all the desktop icons dissapear, all that works is the task manager.
Anyways, so we tried again and then i ran it in safe mode which worked till it actually tried running windows and there is that popup that i believe asks about restore point dissapears in a split second and then nothing loads.
So then i try a different safemode. same problem.
so then we restarted windows and then spy weep hada notification of infected computer. So we ran it and she said it froze last time it ran but this time it did so then it "quarentined" all the problems on the computer.
so then we restarted without internet, which had the explorer and desktop icons back. so i started up the web browsers up i needed and i got a few popups from spysweeper that things were trying to access the internet. some RUNDLL tried running and it was c:\windows\system32\asabmgev.dll.
so then we plugged the internet back in, the explorer disspeared and desktop items but i still had my browsers so i got on here. now we don't know what to do since we cant acess anything on the computer like this. also some weird processes are running on here if anyone knows what they are some dissapear after a second of popping up.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.

Hi I am using windows xp and just moments ago I get a problem. windows will not boot at all. Nothing unusual at start up but no windows icons/usual windows start up appear and computer sits there fans running. If I try to start in safe mode the computer hangs at ...system32/config/system along with the usual prerequisites and does nothing after that.

Circumstances right before this started:
I plugged in an old IDE harddrive(making 2 harddrives plugged in) in order to retrieve some old data. Everything starts up fine but windows freezes 30 sec into startup and the mouse moves but nothing happens(much like my previous registry problems). Restarting leads to the problem stated above. Hi everyone

I am having trouble with one of our laptops. I was running a few virus scans the other day as I realized it there was Google Redirections, fake virus security centers, and security center pop ups in the system tray. A fake virus center kept popping up as a program on the computer, and the internet would not work when this was open.

I tried to run more scans but nothing would open, no programs, no task manager, etc. in order to fix this. Nothing was working, so I shut off the computer. This was a big mistake as when I went to turn it on, it will not boot. It goes into an endless reboot state and flashes a blue screen for a second, not long enough for me to read, before it goes back into rebooting.

None of the safe mode options work, and Last Known Configuration option does not work, the computer just endlessly reboots and will not start up. I really need to get this fixed, as we purchased a warranty for the laptop, but they will not work at all.
I have tried everything and nothing seems to be working, the computer will just not boot up.

I burned an ISO of Puppy Linux after reading about this online and I could boot to that from the CD, from there I could see everything was still intact on my hard drive but it still will not boot windows. I thought about getting an external hard drive enclosure to take the stuff from that drive and put it onto another computer until I can get this fixed.

I am running out of things to try and hope someone can help. thank you.

I realize this problem happens to MANY people, but this is kind of urgent right now..

My computer specs are in my signature/profile (I think).

This is the best computer I have, so I really want it to work again.

First things first, this is how it happened...

1. I was running Win XP Media Edition SP2 fine.
2. I installed Seven Remix XP to get Windows 7 look on XP.
3. I restarted computer since it said I needed to.
4. It restarted after the logon screen. Basically, it logs on, then turns black for 5 seconds, then restarts.
6. I go into safe mode and uninstall Seven Remix XP.
7. It still restarts automatically

Any ideas, please??
I really don't want to use my backup drive, as that will revert my system back to "factory settings". (But I'll still have my programs, obviously)
I'm saving that as a last resort.

Please reply ASAP, this computer transmits Wi-Fi, and I use it for gaming, also, so I really want to get it back up and running.
Any more info needed, just ask.

EDIT: My specs: 2.4GHz AMD Athlon 64 CPU, 2GB RAM, 512MB ATI Radeon X1600, 225MB HD, Windows XP Media Edition.

I was surfing the web last night and all of a sudden, the computer restarted. I walked away to get a drink of water, and when I came back, it was still restarting and it continued this over and over again.

I watched it go through the process and when it gets to the screen where it asks you to select Start Normally, Use Safe Mode, etc., the default is Start Normally. So I tried to select Safe Mode, but found that the keyboard doesn't work. This is odd, because the keyboard is fairly new and had been working just fine. Also, during one of the restarts, I entered the BIOS setup and the keyboard works fine there, but once I exit the BIOS setup, it stops working.

Any thoughts? Is it a Windows keyboard driver that is corrupt or something?

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Hey guys..

I've been trying to fix this computer for the last 8 hours and I can't figure it out. I've narrowed it down to a system corruption, it's not hard, viruses or spyware, it's not anything but a corrupted windows installation.

I will only image the drive at a last resort. I might just buy a second hard drive and install the OS and copy over the goods. Either way, I don't want to go though all that work. I know I can fix this.

I had it working at one point, I did a Windows XP Setup into Repair mode, checked the disk and even went as far as created a second boot.ini - Just to eliminate a factor, that didn't work.

What appeared to work was to "repair" the "corrupted windows installation" 3 or 4 times, and then do an "upgrade" and reactivate windows. I managed to get to a desktop, but then things just went downhill.

The icons where weird, and my "theme" was reset, and various other things. I created a new user in hope to start over, I was aimed at uninstalling things such as the vista transformation pack, etc.. I recently tried partitioning my hard drive, but canceled it in G parted a little after I started it.  I then went to boot into 7 and it worked fine. After I restarted though, the win7 logo would come up, then my PC would restart.  In recovery mode, none of them will work, and when I try to boot into safe mode, it gets stuck at the classpnp.sys, then restarts. Any help?

Reboot to the Win7 DVD and run the repair function. It may take some time to run but hopefully will correct the problem.

Hi my problems started last night when I tried to open my laptop (Toshiba Satelitte A300 on Windows Vista)*
In normal boot up the screen loads fine up to Please Wait...*
I left it on until this morning which by then the screen had turned black and nothing was clickable.*
I cannot start up in Safe Mode either as the same thing happens.
Occasionally when I try and boot up it tells me the C disk has something wrong with it and is fixing it.
A warning saying this file is corrupt and unreadable left me with a flickering screen which fluctuated between black and the vista background.
I did manage to log in once though my desktop soon froze and I had to shut my laptop down.*
Startup repair cannot detect any problems. I did restore Windows to an earlier date with System Restore but that didn't do anything to help and when I tried to restore the system to an even earlier date the Catastrophic Failure sign comes up.

I really am out of ideas apart from restoring to factory settings.

Someone please help.
Thanks*

A:Safe mode and normal boot up oth stuck on Please Wait...

I think you have little options left. I would put it back to factory and if the issue persists it may be the hard drive is gone. Sure that's not the answer you were hoping to hear.

I'm getting the BSOD on all restarts, even in Safe Mode and even if I start with video in VGA mode. Stop code is 0x0000007E plus four more codes in parentheses. During Safe Mode restart the last file to appear on the screen before the BSOD is agpcpq.sys. I've run chkdsk /r twice from the Recovery Console command line (it said it fixed some errors the first time, but not the second), but still same BSOD on restart. I ran Dell Diagnostics quick test and all the specific tests for BSOD, but the computer passed all of them.

This problem began after my computer got part way through an update from XP Professional SP2 to SP3, failed due to an error, then rolled back to SP2. After the rollback, the Windows updater said Windows might not work correctly. However, everything seemed fine until I shut down and restarted. That's when I started getting the BSOD.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 700m notebook.

Thanks for any suggestions on how to fix this!

Joel

A:BSOD during restarts, including Safe Mode and VGA Mode

Try a last known good config. Press F8 at startup and at the boot selection screen, use the last known good configuration choice. Do this and let us know what happens or if there is still an error.

My thinking is that it might be due to the rolled back update. If i am wrong, it might be bad memory depending on what the BSOD error is. So, if you do get another BSOD, write down the error code and send that along as well.

Hi,

I have a pc with Windows XP with SP2 installed. My computer has generally worked fine with little issues, but the other day Norton flagged up a virus issue. The virus was called Trojan.Patchep!inf, and couldn't be removed using Norton.

Naturally, I'd have posted this in the malware removal/HJT forum, but I'm now locked out of my system.

I need a way to be able to get into Windows before I can pull off any HJT logs or run any applications.

The issue I have, is when Windows is loading up. I turn on my computer, and Windows boots up until the scrollbar/loading page. The computer then automatically reboots, and the cycle continues until I just hold the off button to turn off the computer. I've entered the boot menu and attempted the reboot in Safe Mode, and also tried using last working configuration. This has no effect, and still results in the constant restarting of the system.

I don't have a Windows XP disc as it was pre-installed when I bought the computer.

For the time being I can boot from disc using Linux Ubuntu. I read about the virus that infected my system, which suggests that files such as winlogon are affected by the virus, which would explain my problems booting. Would it be possible to repair these files from Ubuntu, allowing me to boot the computer with Windows? I can then start a thread in the malware forum, posting HJT logs etc.

Thanks for any help,

Simon

Hey everybody!
I just bought an Asus U31S laptop a couple of weeks ago for school and all was great until today. It suddenly crashed and gave BSOD. I was just on youtube or something, nothing special, but it had been running for a few hours.
So now it won't boot up, it simply reboots constantly. I can't even get into safe mode. BIOS I can get into, but I'm unable to do anything, since it appears to freeze, when I get in there.
I searched for a solution, but so far I've been unable to find one. Any suggestions?

Hello, all. I heard about this forum a few months ago when my sister came here for help with her laptop; now it's my turn. Forgive the long post, but this has been a long process that I've been trying to fix for almost a week now; I hope someone here will be able to help me out, too.I'm running Windows XP (I can't recall the Service Pack, but I believe it's 3; I always make sure I keep Windows updated and keep Automatic Updates turned on) Home Edition on a Lenovo J115, Machine Type 7387.Long story short, I was stupid and let my Norton subscription run out and suddenly, I got hit with Antivir 2010. That in and of itself was a grueling process; Antivir's a nasty little thing and wouldn't even let me open programs or open up the Task Manager, so after every restart, I'd literally have to open the programs as soon as I saw my desktop wallpaper pop up; if I waited too long, Antivir would start up and block all processes again. The virus was also preventing me from booting up in Safe Mode, and would force a restart of the computer every time I tried. After using CCleaner, MalwareBytes, HiJackThis, and PCTool's Spyware Doctor, I thought I had finally fixed the problem. Antivir was gone, and my computer was finally back to normal.Well, that's what I thought, anyway.I had to update Spyware Doctor's definition files, and I also updated my Firefox; both of these programs require a system restart, so, thinking everything was back to normal, I ... The msconfig file is actually a configuration file for the inital start up of microsoft so you need to be specific what you actually did.. and I'm assuming your playing with things under the services tab? As the startup tab is only the program that boot after xp has already booted. Are you getting a bsod? Or an error code or is it just a black screen and then u see ur bios splash screen again?

Hey There,

I'm working on an IBM ThinkCenter Desktop PC.

On bootup, it goes through the IBM logo and then the Windows logo flashes quickly and then is gone and then the Safe Mode screen appears. No matter which option I choose from the Safe Mode screen, the result is the same: The Windows logo flashes quickly and then the system reboots, and then the IBM logo and then the Safe Mode Screen.

I have tried running the repair module from an o/s disk I have here, but when I get to the c: prompt and type "dir" it says "error occurred during directory enumeration".

There is only one partition.

I have a copy of UBCD4WIN, if that would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

I do not have the o/s disk that belongs to this computer.

Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi. I use copy cloud storage. I will send you a referral and it will give you and me an extra 5gb of storage. I think you will have 20 gb with the referral. Plus you can get more if you refer other people. I work on computers some but only know some. But you can use Hirens boot cd which is free and boot from the cd and use some of the recover programs to get your data back if the hard drive is accessible. You can also run some programs on the disc to test your hard drive and see if it's bad. Only thing is your dvd drive won't let you, but if you could borrow someones dvd drive or put your hard drive in another laptop to test it you could without buying anything yet. As far as running from usb I am not familiar with your laptop but their probably is an option in your bios to boot from usb. I recently reinstalled vista on a dell desktop that was vista and had a bad dvd drive and reinstalled it with usb. I used poweriso to set up my usb but there is a free program called rufus that is portable so you don't have to install it that will set up your usb. But I think you have to make an iso file of your os to set it up. You could then use it to try to repair or reinstall your os but I would try to save my data and test my hard drive first. I also would hang on to your external hard drive too. You may take the drive out of it and later see if you can put it in a desktop or buy you a usb disk dock from ebay, as the drive may be good and the circuit board that connects your u... Read more

Hi guys, I need help on my Acer 4750G here. I've been lurking around the internet lately searching for this problem's solution. But no answer

Here's the story:
So this morning my I started my laptop, it kinds of frozen/lagged so I had to shut it down via holding the power button 'till the screen shuts off. In school (I'm still 13-14) I turned it on, the booting took an unusual time to start. Then BAM! Bluescreen flashed about 1/4 second I tried to start it via safe mode, it stucks on the driver called "classpnp.sys". Seconds later, the same flashing bluescreen happened.

I've done these:
-System restore (It seems to do something, it gave me no result either)
-Memory Diagnostic Tool (It says no problem found, damn)

I've also done writing this line via recovery's command prompt:
rename c:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys classpnp.old
And no result either...

I'm not sure if the troublemaker is the hardware or driver. I might want to get it to the manufacturer's shop, but it'll be costy...

Anyway here's the bluescreen code written by me, I'm using my sister's netbook so no copy-paste thingy:

Alfrey,
* Is your computer under Warranty?

* IF you are able to...
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I've done several system restores and attempted a boot loop fix posted on these forums with no success. Can someone point me I. The right direction please?

As said above, my Dell Studio 1555 laptop will not boot either into regular windows or safe mode.

When booting into safe mode, the very last file that will load is "CLASSPNP.SYS"

When that happens it will stay stuck loading the next file for a few minutes, then restart itself into the Windows Error Recovery screen.

When I try startup repair, it goes to a blank black screen and repeats the procedure above (ie. it gets stuck and restarts a few minutes later)

When I hard-shut down by pressing the power button, a BSoD appears for a fraction of a second right before it dies.

What could the problem be, and what can I do to fix it? I have the windows 7 install disk, if needed. Should I go ahead and try an installation repair using the disk?

I'd really like to avoid reinstalling windows as of yet, although it's not too much of a problem if it came down to it.

A:Stuck halfway through loading windows, cannot boot into safe mode

Before anything else. Do you have ANYTHING plugged into the laptop right now?
even just a simple mouse.
Anything outside of the power chord basically.
If so unplug those devices now.
I would even include external wifi / wireless /3g-4g cards in that.
If not, there are ways of reinstalling windows and preserving the old data.

For the moment we'll just start with, is anything plugged into it?

You could try a Repair Install which recreates the Basic Windows Registry.
