Problem with corrupt files which clearly are not corrupt

Q: Problem with corrupt files which clearly are not corrupt

This is going to be a long winded, very experimental thread so here goes.
This is about 3 computers in question, I have 8.
One is an AMD athlon 2800+ 2.1Ghz with Inno3d 7600gs 512mb with 2gb ram.
The other 2 are Intel celeron (D) 3.46 ghz with 2gb 533mhz ram and 9400GT 1GB ram exactly the same pc's.
All running the same Windows XP PRO SP2.
I am trying to extract an RAR archive file using winrar on one computer with GTA San Andreas Ultimate 2008 from the OED.
This has worked before on this particular computer.
If you know who The OED is then you know what I mean.
Anyway, it works fine on the AMD and *one* of the Intels.
On one of the intels when I try and extract the archive, it says many files are corrupt.
Yet I have deleted all traces, and transfered again using a Toshiba flash drive.
And everytime I extract them it says they are corrupt.
remember this game has worked on this same computer before.
What is saying they are corrupt?
It works on the exact same pc in the next room.
I think my son has put some software on there which I have deleted.
Which may have put some hidden DRM type of virus that is trying to stop me using copied cracked programs.
It is not a firewall or anti virus problem I can assure you so do not even go there.Remember both PC's the same, identical, with everything.
Any ideas or questions?

Preferred Solution: Problem with corrupt files which clearly are not corrupt

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been using the free Cobian Backup for about a year, with no problems. My backup procedure is to make full backups every 2 weeks, with daily incremental backups.

My 400GB external HDD is beginning to fill up. I need to remove some of the older full backups. Of course, the problem is that an older file may be non-corrupt, whereas a newer "copy" of the same file may have become corrupt.

I recently found another free tool, "Duplicate Cleaner". This file searches for duplicate files that can be identical in name, time, MD5 or any selected combination of these. I'm planning to use Duplicate Cleaner to remove duplicate files from my HDD.

So here is my question.

Is it possible for a corrupt file to show the same MD5 hash as an identical non-corrupt file? Or does the corruption produce a different MD5?

If the hashes are the same, then of course there is a danger that Duplicate Cleaner (or any tool) could delete the non-corrupt file and leave the corrupt file.

(Note that this thread is related to "MD5", rather than "Software".)

Somehow I have corrupt CAB files on my PC, which won't allow me to use Windows Update to get SP2 or other fixes, and it won't let me run Live Update on Norton, nor will it let me download items due to an error that says signature cannot be verified or something. Then a corrupt file error message comes up. Any thoughts? Will re-installing Windows XP fix it? Anything I try to download gives me the same corrupt file error having something to due with signature verification, then when I click run, I get that corrupt file error as the download tries to finish. I used a program called RegCure a few times, but hopefully that didn't screw things up. I went back and undid those changes. PLEASE HELP!!

A:Corrupt CAB Files Problem

The mods of this forum do suggest not using any registry cleaners, so regcure could have caused the issue. First things first:
Click start, run, type cmd, type sfc /scannow
Have your xp cd ready in case it asks for it. If that doesn't fix it post back. You can do a repair without completely re-installing windows, so don't go that route yet.

Hello, i got a few problems lately with some files and i fear it might be some corruption in the windows system from older virus or something and have no idea how to fix it.

For example in a zip file i got something called "header corurpt" or when trying to play a game i get "the archon directory within the current user's home directory is corrupt or the home directory is unwrittable" which i also got in another game during instalation.

Is there any way to can search for corruption errors? Because i cant format the pc since i have left the windows xp cd at my older house in greece because my parents use it too plus i have a small problem getting all the drivers for everything. Is there any solution or program that searches for corruptions and restores them?Or restores them manually

A:Problem with corrupt files or directory?

first do a scan disk.

Run type cmd in the command prompt type in

then type in "Y" for yes then reboot
this will take some time have some coffee and sit back.

Old virus?

I would go here to the link in my signature Virus, Spyware, malware help and tell them or mention old virus and your problem. They will give you instructions. I can not help you with virus here.

Good luck.

I can't believe I made such a stupid choice. I was resizing my partition (G: drive) on my second hard drive, which I mainly use as storage. It's a 400 GB partition. After the computer restarted and began resizing the partition, I realized that I didn't want to wait for it because it'd obviously take 6-10 hours. When I chose cancel, it was done moving about 26 GB of data and a message came up saying that the data "might" become corrupt. I thought that I could risk that. I'm an impatient person and I didn't want to wait for so long. So, I canceled it and restarted my computer. When it reached windows, my desktop was missing (G:/desktop). Obviously, almost everything on my G: drive was corrupt, but not only that, the 26 GB of files was missing, which I found intact in a hidden folder. They were obviously just moved to a different folder.

I tried running chkdsk, and when I restarted my computer, it said something like "repairing orphaned files", and it took about 2 hours for it to finish. I guess it was rebuilding the index or something. But that still didn't fix the corrupt files. Note: I can access the drive just fine.

The files are there, but when I click on them, they appear to be corrupt. The hard drive is the same size as before. Is there a program that can repair the corrupt files? I don't want to get getdataback for NTFS. I know it's an excellent program, but it costs a lot of money.

I'm having the weirdest problem with Vista. After saving image files (tried as jpegs and bmps so far) from any application (Adobe CS2, Canon DPP), I move the images across the LAN to a shared folder on an XP Pro machine. When I reboot the XP Pro machine, the images appear corrupt - no embedded preview on some of them and none of them will open. Weirdly, if copy the folder out of the shared directory and onto the desktop of the XP Pro machine and then reboot, those files appear to remain undamaged. Existing images in the shared directory also appear unaffected.

I've duplicated this problem copying files to a 2nd XP Pro machine, so the issue would appear to originate with the Vista box. I can't see why it only manifests after a reboot of the XP Pro machine though. All the PCs appear to be free from viruses and/or malware. I'm totally puzzled by this one.

This problem only seems to manifest if I copy the files across from within Vista. For example:

Files saved in shared directory X in Vista. Log into Vista box and copy to shared directory Y on XP Pro box. Files appear corrupt after reboot of XP Pro box.

Files saved in shared directory X in Vista. Log into XP Pro box and copy from shared directory X on Vista box into shared directory Y on XP Pro box. Files retain integrity. So the origin and destination directories remain the same, and only the machine performing the operation changes. When it's the Vista machine, the files are somehow corrupted.

I have a big one and its confusing the life out of me.

About two weeks ago my Itunes said my ipod was corrupted and needs to be restored and then it does so and says it is still corrupted upon rebooting the Ipod... this cycle can go on forever. I also noticed that my disc drive will spin a disc but when I open it in My Computer it simply shows it as empty. Upon system boot into Windows a Nero message box would say something about some problems with Upper or Lower Drives or something like that so I uninstalled Nero completely.

I uninstalled everything to do with apple and itunes/ipod as well with a 3rd party uninstaller and tried cleaning out my Registry of all left overs.

Antivirus scans show nothing

Upon reinstalling itunes - still had my playlists and songs... meaning it did not fully uninstall. great. Also same problem with the ipod. What makes me think this is a problem with my PC and not apple software/ipod is that the ipod is only seen as a removable disk in My Computer, normally it identifies as IPOD.

I restored my pc to a date way before the problems started. nothing changed.

I tried to do a repair install of windows but it said it was missing some files like framdit.ttf which is a font so i said to skip but then it said it was missing fs.rec.sys so i didn't go any further bcuz that sounded serious. (althought this might be because i have tinyxp installed so it doesn't have a lot of the files)

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hi - hope you can help with my pc.

Have been putting up with the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message for a while now.

When Googling the error message I came across your excellent site - hope you can help sort this out.

The error message comes up every now and then when I try and get into windows explorer, either from the desktop shortcut, or from my documents.

The details in the error signature part of the message lists the following:
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: explorer.exe
ModVer: 6.0.2900.5512
Offset: 00011900

When I click on the debug option all my icons on the desktop disappear momentarily, then re-appear.

I'm not sure if this could be down to Malware of some sort or perhaps a corrupt windows file somewhere.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Suite 2009 (ver and Ashampoo Antispyware 2 Guard (ver 2.05) - both of which are updated regularly. Neither have shown anything untoward.

i just recently back up my files to an hd drive with help of win 7 back up wizard and now my question is how to restore back up files if the pc is no longer working because of corrupt files?? or BSOD or anything... please help.. i just want to be prepared in any outcome that may occur..

A:how to restore back uped files if the pc is no longer working because of corrupt files??

Well first of all, you don't want to restore your backup if your pc is no longer working. A backup only makes copies of your personal files, like documents, pictures, ect... You would want to use your Windows 7 CD/DVD to restore your system to factory specs, then you restore your backup (using the same Restore Wizard) to get all your personal stuff back.

Hope that answers your question.

I get a windows boot error 0xc000000e if I try to boot into safe mode or launch startup repair through through windows boot manager. I tried using a windows 7 recovery usb but startup repair says it cannot repair the problem automatically. Through the command line I ran chkdsk /f and /r multiple times, and now all the files verify and and there are no more bad cluster errors, but I still can't boot. I can get into f8 options but safe mode doesn't work nor does startup repair so I'm not sure what good that does. If I try to boot windows 7 normally, it hangs on the startup screen and the animation doesn't run.

I used partition wizard and it can explore the filesystem fine. It also says that the partition with windows 7 and all my data, is inactive. I tried setting it active using PW but it doesn't do anything. I also tried to fixmbr but it doesn't seem to make a difference either.

I ran an offline sfc scan and it said it found corrupt files but was unable to repair, which I would usually do a inplace upgrade but I can't boot. I'm running chkdsk /r again to see if I can atleast get into safe mode then do a repair install, and finally make a clone when my replacement hdd arrives. I have backups but since they were ran while the partition wasn't bootable I'm not sure if I can get it to boot on a new hdd anyway, which is why I want to make a clone while running windows 7.

I am not sure why I keep getting hdd inaccessible errors or why I'm unable to boot when every tool ... Read more

Hi, recently I've noticed that something has been happening with my laptop. When I turn on the computer and to the log in screen, it says Loginui.exe is corrupt or something like that. Although i am able to log in still, and use my laptop. When I log in and open programs, for example Google Chrome, i am able to navigate chrome normally, but a message continuously pops up saying chrome.exe is corrupt. I am also having problems with programs such as Java, Vuze, Windows live messenger, which i am completely unable to use. When i open windows live messenger i get msnmsgr.exe - application error ( The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000102). Click OK to close the application). For vuze i receive the message ( The JVM found at {0} is damaged, please re-install or define... etc) I have tried uninstalling and re-installing certain programs. I have also just rebooted my computer to get a fresh start. Can anyone help me out with this problem, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I just recently built myself a new computer and after it running fine for about a month, things started not working. It all started with world of warcraft. When the latest patch came out i downloaded it eagerly only for it to error upon installing. it said something about the install being corrupt and a reintsall would fix it. i tried a few things liket he blizzard repair tool but eventually went to reintsall. but after uninstalling the game i would get the same error upon trying to reinstall on both my HDs. "there may be something wrong with my system" it says. So i Formated my HD that windows was on but the same thing. NOW It seems when ever i download a large file, be it via bit torrent or regular download, it seems to be corrupt. it started as just a few things but soon it was everything i downloaded that was over 100MBs. Executables, RAR files. all corrupt. the strange thing is i send my roommate a file i had downloaded and he could install it fine! I also seem to be getting these error messages alot.

"The instruction at "0x00864a4d" referenced memory at "0x00ec0b08". The memory could not be "written" (or "read"). Click on OK to terminate the program"

As a general rule...running either the chkdsk /r command or the sfc /scannow command a single time...may not necessarily resolve all problems, although many users assume that such is the case.
I've run each as many as three times before all problemss were resolved, I suggest running the scannow command again, not skipping any instances where the Abort/Retry/Skip option comes up.

You can run CHKDSK as follows:
Open "My Computer"
Right click on "Local Disk [C:]"
Select "Properties"
Select the "Tools" tab
Select "Error checking"
It may or may not ask you to schedule this on the next bootup.

You may also wish to run the "SFC /SCANNOW" command in the "RUN" window. You will need your Windows XP CD for this.

You can ignore that it's the result of a Microsoft Update released recently KB3068708 and according to Microsoft its a false report of corruption.

this update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or actual corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

Corrupt files are often very tricky. One solution that works for some file types is right clicking the file and opening it with notepad. Generally you will be able to navigate your way through the file and find some of your data still intact.

Here is a program that allegedly mend corrupt files (you'll usually get sporadic results, but why not try....you may get lucky):

I did a quick download.com search for "recovery" and then
for "corrupt"

Hope this helps.

Sorry about your situation!

Hi all

I have recently added a 200Gb hdd as a secondary to a 80Gb. All worked fine for a couple of days and then all of a sudden I got a message saying that one of my drives needs to be checked. After WinXP "recovered" some of the files, my installation executables now appear as MSDOS programs and will not run in Windows. At this stage it appears to be only EXE files that are affected. This is particularly irritating seeing as I dumped all the installations of my software packages on a partition for faster installation.

Any suggestions?

Hi all,I'm new to this forum and hope you can help.
All my shortcuts (lnk files) show the same target app! For example they all show the outlook icon instead of the icon of the target app. f I re-associate that lnk file they all change tothe same target, and of course an adobe app can't open outlook and vice-versa. How do I reassociate the .lnk file with the correct target app?
The only way to open a target is to go through the program files in my computer.

Hi Cyboid,

You can click on lnk in the box at this link below and dowload the lnkfix_vista.reg file to restore the default association for shortcut file types.

My mother purchased an All-in-One last year. She has forgotten about all she has known about computers, so I can't explain what happened to the computer, however...Two days ago, it was fine. Mom went to get on it yesterday, and the only icon showing is the Recycle Bin. I clicked on the Start Icon in the corner, and nothing happened. I opened the Recycle bin, and got the message that the files were corrupt. In the bottom right, her hidden icons are Malwarebytes, and Webtools (Best Buy Geek Squad)Nothing will open or work. I do not know how to restore anything, and no disks came with the system. I typed in the SID here, but it can't be found.I am at a loss as to what to do.

You can search (in the search box in start menu) for the mini-dump and zip the file and post it so a qualified member can decipher it and possibly help.

After laptop was badly damaged by a virus or similar I was unable to use recovery discs. I had the DVD writer/re-writer replaced and although it now recognises blank and burned discs I am still unable to re-install Windows Home Premium 32 bit, using recovery discs. Every time I use the partition instead I have used the system file check with scannow and it reveals corrupted files which it can't repair. Laptop is a Sony vaio, model VGN-NR32S. Any help or assistance is greatly appreciated as the frustration is getting the better of me.

Sometimes sfc /scannow needs to be run two or three times to completely resolve some problems.  Please try rebooting and try this again.
Why did you run the sfc /scannow?

I can usually fix most of my PC problems with just a simple google search but this one has me stumped. I keep getting corrupt files, like videos, mp3's, stuff like that. It's been happening for about a week now and I can't figure out why. When I first get the file it will play fine and then a couple of hours or so later it just shows that the file is 0:00 in length and everything is blank except the filesize which stays the same. I've ran a couple of different virus scanners and even ran an online one at bitdefender's website. I've ran Chkdsk on both my hard drives and everything checked out OK. It's not on just one hard drive, it seems to happen on both of them. It seems to only happen to video and audio files as far as I can tell. It's starting to get a little irritating lol. Any help with this would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.

i posted a few weeks ago about getting corrupted files constantly on my computer and it's still happening, at first i thought it might be a hd problem or a virus. but i've checked and cleared my comp for those problems.

i know the first thing people will say is to download the file again, but i've tried that and from multiple sources and still there no good...

also the volume of corrupt files is much larger then normal i'd say 90% of the files i download are corrupted.

what other things can cause this type of problem???

could i be missing some critical files in my o.s. that would make a good install say it was corrupted???

also i noticed that torrent files never come out corrupted.

I'm using microsoft XP SP 3 home edition x86 based PC (idk if that made sense). Well, recently, I've discovered that an increasing number of my files are getting corrupted. As scandisk cannot be initiated on my system for some unknown reason, I used the seatools (seagate utility?) to check for bad partitions on my harddisk. A quick scan showed that my harddisk is fine. What is happening and what should I do?

You can try running CHKDSK. This can be done by going to my computer>right click on your main drive (Usually C:\) > Right click > Properties > Tools > Check now.Alternatively you can use a tool such as DialAFix to re-register your computers components, see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...t&p=1073555 for help another member has given on how to use DialAFix.Advanced SystemCare V3 has a tool to check system files, and if you have the correct operating CD then this is very simple.Try the first two steps i offered and if your still not happy then feel free to post back.If i or another member dont reply in 24 hours pm me Good luck

I was not able to understand them, can some one shed some light & probably help me fix them.

Just for the info, I wasn't provided with any windows CD/DVD's when I got my laptop, as I got in a discount offer from the vendor, which already had w7 installed on it. I didn't need them so far either.

Hi everyone,

I was downloading some ZIP files the other night and when I went to extract them, it told me "ZIP file is corrupt", and "Nothing to extract". So, I deleted the files and re-downloaded them. Same thing. I did this a couple of times with no success. Finally, I went to open a file I already knew worked, because I had unzipped it earlier. It didn't even work. I re-booted my computer and right afterwards, they all worked, but after 5-10 mins, they didn't work again.
Has anybody else run into this problem? Could it be a virus or spyware or something, I'm at a complete loss, and it's really annoying. By the way, I was just using the built in windows extractor, and not some other program like WinZip.

Thanks in advance,

Since this morning I have been getting various corrupt file messages on XP, this caused a few programs to stop working to a degree (save games wouldn't load). As the day has gone on more and more files have got corrupted and although every program still runs as time goes on the worse they are running.

I have Norton Anti Virus running and it hasn't picked up anything coming in or when I ran a full system scan, so I did a scan on HouseCall and AVG and they picked up 2 Java/Byte Verify viruses, trojan horses in my System Volume Information folder and a couple other trojans. AVG then 'healed' or deleted these files yet my problems have not improved.

Can anybody please help me?

Welcome to TSF.

Decide whether to keep AVG or Norton and not both. Uninstall one of them now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK.

Normally you would run the
sfc /scannow
command in an elevated command prompt. It often requires running the scan until it completes then rebooting and running it again then repeat the procedure a third time in order to fix system file corruption.

A:corrupt files

Corrupt how? Did you have a virus that 'encrypted' them? Is that why you posted in the malware removal section? Are you still infected?

But the basic answer is no, if a file is corrupt or encrypted moving it to another computer will not change that. Now there may be a way of getting a good copy of that file back though but you'd need to give us a lot more detail as to what happened and what version of Windows you have.

I can also move this to another section if you don't have a virus or ransomware affecting the computer.

mscat32.dll, mssip32.dll, MSSIGN32.DLL, softpub.dll, CRYPTUI.DLL,CRYPTNET.DLL, CRYPTEXT.DLL, msoss.dll
Should I reinstall ie5.01 or should I try to use IE5ís repair tool? Or should I not worry. Do anyone know what these files are for?
Lots of questions, I know.

I would leave it alone if you aren't having problems but it can't hurt to run the Repair tool.
BTW, most of those files are verified by the <a href=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q194/1/77.ASP> IE5 Repair Tool. </a>
