ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

Q: ideapad Z510 - turns on only if plugged in

I have an ideapad z510 which I have been using without any problems for the last 2 and a half years or so. For the last few weeks, it won't turn on if it's unplugged: the lights under the keyboard turn on for a brief moment, so does the power button, but then it all stops. When I plug it in, the first time I press the button it doesn't turn on either (same behaviour as when unplugged) but on the second attempt it turns on propperly. Once running, I can unplug it and it will keep working propperly. What could be going wrong? How could I fix it? For your interest: I cannot (easily) remove the battery, in case that matters. Thank you for your help Leo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi leocasasola,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can start with the power check out guide from the hardware manual (page 21-22) testing on the integrity of the AC adapter and operational charging to isolate.

Further steps may require certain tools and skill as board level checking (power board , systemboard ports and chips etc.), so it would be best that you take time to back up your data while you can and check on your local service center.

Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

Hello. First of all, thank you for taking the time to view my post and potentially help me out. So the problem is that my laptop will not start. I was using my laptop here one day and it was working fine, but it was unable to charge for some reason and ended up shutting down so I went to bed. The next morning I tried turning it on, but it was dead. I have tried a different charger as my sister also has a lenovo laptop, but this did not work either. I would think if the battery was the problem, the laptop should still be working with the charger in? I have tried calling support line several times with no answer, the warranty has gone out and I forgot where i bought the laptop sadly. Really frustrated over here, and any help is highly appreciated!

I have had a horrible experience with Lenovo customer support, and am looking for advice. My Lenovo Z510 started crashing only while plugged in, and of course this happened shortly after the warranty expired. Because it was out of warranty, I didn't bother calling Lenovo. I tried everything I could think of, replaced the fan, replaced the A/C adapter, replaced the heat sink and reapplied new thermal paste. I updated all of my drivers, and the system BIOS. I even took my computer into a repair place, and they couldn't determine what the issue was but offered to slowly start replacing things until the issue was fixed. This seemed expensive and a big risk, so I didn't pursue this. But the problem persists. I recently found on a Lenovo forum that this had happened to multiple people, and the problem was a bad motherboard. Because of this, I decided to call Lenovo customer support. The person I originally spoke with confirmed that he had also found several forums that showed Z510s had a faulty motherboard, and said because of this it was likely that despite being out of warranty they would still be able to fix my computer. He escalated my case, and several days later I got an email from Lenovo simply stating my computer was out of warranty. I emailed them back asking if they would be willing to fix it because of the known issue, and never heard back. A month later I called Lenovo, asking why I had never heard back, and they gave me a cookie cutter response that I needed ... Read more

Hello Community! I have a very strange issue with my Z510. Suddenly my laptop turned off by itself and couldn't turn back on. I replaced the motherboard with a new one, but there's another problem: When connecting AC adapter it "turns on" for a second and then turns off(the monitor is off). The same goes with pressing the power button while plugged in.I can only see the power indicator on the button, the led below the touchpad and the fan that rotates a bit or a few times. Anybody had the problem? I have no time for sending the laptop to the service as I can't wait for it to come back(but if it has to be the only solution them I might rethink it) or just buy a new laptop? Regards!

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video. Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .
I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

My Z510 has been randomly shutting down when plugged in, but doesn't have this issue when running on battery. I contacted Lenovo and they sent my a new power supply but the issue continues. I called again and they instructed me to repair-install the Lenovo power manager and do a disk check. The issue still continues. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? It used to happen when running something intensive like photoshop or a game and only if charging over 75%, but now it'll happen randomly. I can be sitting staring at the laptop with no programs running and it'll shut down. Z510i7HD 46008 gb mem1 tb hard driveWin 8.1

I purchased Lenovo Ideapad z510, and regardless it's poor battery performance I enjoy it a lot it's amazing, how ever I am having those issues and would highly appreciate some tips or help : Whenever I charge the battery it never reach to 100% and when I take it off the charger and use the battery it keeps saying 99% even with no charger on, and does not show warning messages about low battery like 10 % remaning and 7% remaning .. like it used to do in the past and just shuts down..  I tried the battery gauge reset with the Lenovo's Enery Manager app but no luck!  My other question is there speceifc program that can check the fan status? I am afraid it might not be working proberly like before.  And my last question can I buy only specific parts of the keyboard? my cat removed two buttons of my keyboard and it is too expensive to replace the whole keyboard with the backlit because it's working perfectly fine! Thank you.

Hi all, I bought a used Z510 off Ebay a couple of days ago as a small upgrade from my Z500. I have a modded whitelist removed BIOS on the Z500 and use an Intel 7260ac WLAN card. Now just learnt that modded BIOS's cannot be flashed on the Z510 without hardware programming. I'm so annoyed at Lenovo for this selfish restriction and I'd seriously consider ever buying their products again. My question is: are there any 802.11ac WLAN cards that will work on this model? I've looked in the Hardware Maintenance Manual and all I can see are BGN cards, not AC. I've seen a Broadcom AC card mentioned in a thread but the model number was not given. PS: Does anyone know if the screen brightness issue was solved if one uses a FHD screen on a Z500? I know the Intel HD4000 drivers caused the issue but this thread seems to suggest that using a FHD screen reproduces the problem. Thanks a lot!Andrew

Hi everyone, I bought my Z510 notebook about 2 years ago and this problem started about 2 weeks ago. A significat drop on performance occured when playing games that previously had no problem to run smoothly. It's quite annoying because now it's impossible for my games to run fluently - instead they almost run frame by frame like I had too weak graphic card.. It happened suddenly - one day it was OK and the other everything went down.I cannot watch YouTube videos in 1080p quality. 720p is max and if I chose higher quality, videos cannot run smoothly - the situation is almost the same like with my games. Video needs to take some time to load for about 2-3 seconds - it also lasts for about 2-3seconds.My notebook also needs much more time to start up and switch off. It used to be a copule of seconds and now I feel like this time has doubled. In general, my PC works slower.I scanned it for viruses a copule of times and even reinstalled Windows. Nothing helped. What is happening? Is it because of the graphic card or is it because built-in technology making the hardware obsolete and forcing buying a new PC? In advance thanks for You help.

I have a laptop which is mentioned above. Had it for almost 3 years now and suddenly shut off while I was using it. It would not charge nor it would turn on. Tried the power reset thing which holds the power button for multiple seconds but to no avail.  Then went to a service center saying motherboard burned up. Such a shame since I really like the laptop and I spent  lot of money for it since I bought the i7 core version. I was hesitant to buy other brands before actually purchasing this lenovo laptop. I have a netbook (not a lenovo brand) which I had for 7 years now. But my almost 1000dollars z510 laptop broke and it hasn't been a FULL 3 YEARS?  WTH LENOVO! And motherboard replacement is VERY expensive. I'm really STRESSED about this. And ALL my files are there. I bought my Ideapad Z510 in March 2014, its Windows 8.1. Last few days it shows "battery is weak, needs to be replaced". The battery does not charge, I have to power through AC cable, whenever I disconnect AC, its power is gone. In order to fix the problem, I did the following taks:1. I removed MIcrosoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, and also Microsoft AC Adapter from Battery option. But after restarting the laptop, those options always reinstalled automatically without notifying. When I open Device Manager, those options are always there though those are removed and laptop is restarted.2. I reset the Gauge, but nothing happened.  I cannot understand why Lenovo provides such a poor quality battery. It is gone after 1 year!!! I cannot believe it! I have 10 years old DELL laptop and still I can use that battery for an hour. But my new Lenovo's battery has gone just after 1 year! Its a shame. Lenovo should respond about explanation that why they provide such poor quality battery. Any idea about resolving it?

A:ideapad Z510 "battery weak" issue

I have the same issue, bought the laptop around march of last year, and started experiencing the problems during the start of June.  I've seen many topics with this issue, with the same response from Mods and Admins. It's basically a substandard battery issue, and the only solution Lenovo gives us is to replace the battery (which are expensive with the relative cost of the laptop), and that doesn't even give us assurance that this issue will not happen again in a year or so. Very disappointing.

My Idealpad Z510 became unusable after it was automatically updated by Microsoft.  I tried to reset the machine with OneKey Recovery (by using Restore from initial backup).  However, the machine always goes back to the OneKey Recovery screen after Step 2 (Start Restoration) is completed and machine was rebooted.  I dont have another system backup.  My initial backup might be bad.  What should I do?  I was thinking to get a inital system ISO disk so might be able to retire it to the disk image...  Where can I get the initial system disk?  I called Lenovo support and was put on-hold for two hours yesterday - noone pick up the phone. Thanks to whoever can help.

I booted up the computer at the safe mode.  Now I have some errors: There is not enough space on the disk (error #112)Source: H:\OneKey\OKR\WSVD\wsvd.sysDestination:X:\windows\system32\DRIVES\wsd.sys Both H and X are Lenovo hidden directories.   There are 1 TB free on C:, 10 GB free on D: How do I allocate more space to X: (Boot)?

Hey folks, From around mid August til today, my ideapad z510  has gone through at least 4 or 5 automatic Windows updates. I'm currently on Windows 10 after the free upgrade when Window first introduced it. The first of the 4 or 5 automatic updates happened in Auguest where after updating the screen went into a bootloop with the dotted circle at the bottom of the screen just going in circles forever. I forced the shutdown and after restarting it, it seemed to pick up and reboot just fine. However yesterday, another automatic update happened but this time, it's in a forever bootloop. I've tried restarting it several times with no success. I've tried using the Novo button to reboot to a past savings point with no success. I'm at a point where I have to reset the laptop to its initial out of box state but dont want to lose any files, pictures, and data I currently have. Is there any other troubleshoot options I may have missed? Any help would be appreciated.

dear sir, my name is nikhil in my laptop z510 ideapad i am facing battery problem it is not showing correct battery % and also not show batterey low warning message and it is stable at one position 99% please sir help me out from this problem .many of them his having this same problem please give some battery firmware update so to resolve this problem.it is not a hardware problem because it started from two days before previously it is working fine but now it is not working          I purchased the z510 last  july and while the battery life wasn't great on it now it has stopped working altogether. I have tried every conceivable fix for it from the forums here and none has worked. The problem that I am having is that the battery is stuck at 99% while charging and when it is off charge it will stay on for half an hour and the shut off hard without warning, it has caused me to lose progress in work. The battery gauge reset is no longer working either as it was on for hours and just kept showing 99%. I would appreciate a response back. This seems to be a problem with this make of laptop as far as Ican see.
