Q: Compaq Presario cq61

Hello,
I have recently upgrade my OS from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate by clean install method.
I think so far everything works except microphone which I solved by installing updates from windows update.
So my question is, Should I install some drivers or some updates from either compaq or hp sites or wherever also? Should I try to find drivers specefic for my computer or go with the drivers which came with windows 7?
My computer model is: Compaq Presario CQ61

Thank you very much!!!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So recently the charger for my Compaq laptop has gone bust, and I need to know what charger I would need to buy. This has happened once before, and when I bought a new charger, the wattage wasn't correct for the computer, so that one broke too.

What I need to know, is the exact charger needed for this laptop, meaning the correct wattage for the computer. Links to websites where I can buy it would be greatly appreciated.

Recently my fan in my laptop was extremely loud, and the laptop was getting really hot. I proceeded to vacuuming my laptop and dust came out of it.

Somehow when vacuuming my fan, it broke.

Now it does not spin, and my laptop is silent.

Within 10 minutes of running the laptop it turns off; when it turns back on it says it shutdown to avoid over heating...

Any ideas, do i need a replacement, and should i take it to a computer place???

A:Broken fan on Compaq Presario CQ61

I suggest trying to blow out more dust. Maybe a dust bunny is preventing the fan from spinning.

If that doesn't work, the machine may need to be cleaned more thoroughly (disassembled). If that doesn't work, you'd need a replacement fan.

Take it to a shop, if you can't do it yourself, and you know a place that you can trust. (Preferably not Geek Squad at Best Buy. I've read few kind words about them.)

So my laptop's screen is black. I'm using my tv right now with it, it works fine hooked up to a TV. I've tried everything I know of. When the laptop first starts up, It flashes the red compaq screen, then goes black. Flashes the user login screen, then goes black 2 sec later. When I do the fn+f4, the screen flashes back on, everything looks cool, then 5 seconds later it goes black again. It's not just the light, it goes completely off. (Just on the laptop, external monitor works) I've tried restoring back to factory settings, recovery, and I'm not getting anywhere! I've even tried that black screen fix by Prevx. Oh and I also tried turning the laptop off, holding the power button, etc. It has windows 7. CQ61 I think is the model.
I wasn't really sure if this was the right place to post it, so sorry if I'm in the wrong section!

Several of these were blamed on ataport.sys. Some very old drivers need updating including your raid, storage, and others.

I would update the old drivers

Hi,

I recently turned on my laptop and the screen was black. After a while when it booted up, the screen came on as normal and then flashed out about 10 seconds later. I can shine a torch on to the screen when it boots up and see windows and everything but it's obviously too dark to use. I replaced inverter and lcd panel but the problem remains...

How should I go about fixing this?

A:Compaq presario CQ61-415SA Recovery

HP no longer has any Windows 7 based recovery disks for consumer laptops. There is a 3rd party market for recovery disks.  http://computersurgeons.com/p-19931-windows-7-premium-64b-recovery-kit-599363-001-for-compaq-presari... That is not precisely your model but is AMD so the motherboard is the same as yours and would work. If you are a little more adventurous and tight-fisted, we can walk you through a "clean" recovery using an OEM Windows 7 install disk and the drivers found on this site.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi,

My name is Alison, I was trying to fix my laptop and ended up making things a lot worse!!

I ran DBAN and during the process i realized i have no way to reinstall Vista OS so i aborted the wipe after 10 or 15 mins into it.

Its a Compaq Presario CQ61. On the back of the L/T i have a sticker with a product key but when i purchased it i never got a CD for Vista. I dont have recovery discs either.

So like i said i stopped DBAN from completing the wipe however now when i turn the L/T on it says,

"NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

I tried doing System Recovery but the same message comes up... i also found a Vista Recovery online and burnt to cd-r but it stills says, "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

Im not sure what to do to fix this issue... any help or advice welcome but please explain in details.

Is there a way to copy a different version of windows OS from a different PC and make that a 'boot disc' I dont really understand what a boot disc is...

Thanks in advance!

Alison

A:Wiped the hard drive now i have no OS (Compaq Presario CQ61)

Hi, Alison.

A boot disk is the hard drive which your PC boots from and starts Windows, but your hard drive has had the boot files and Windows (or some of it) wiped off it with DBAN. DBAN is used to securely wipe all data from a hard drive prior to selling it or otherwise disposing of it -- this prevents any data from getting into the wrong hands.

You will have to contact HP/Compaq and ask them if they can send you a set of Recovery CDs for your model.

Hello All,

I have recently purchased a Presario CQ61-410 US ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834107043) and am now trying to install Xp Pro on it. I am having major difficulties.

After a lot of googling, I found these guides ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/General-XP-Downgrade-Guide-for-HP-Laptops/td-p/83267, http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html). I tried both solutions to no avail; I would still get a blue screen after during the initial install. Then I realized I have the AMD chipset, and thanks to this thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f19/...en-422183.html) was able to find the Raid drivers, slipstream them with Nlite and begin. The SATA hard drive was readable, and the installation commenced.

Here, though, is the rub. I am able to get through the basic install screen (F8 I agree, partitions, etc) and through the first "GUI" install screen (Agree to EULA, "Your Screen May Flicker for a few Seconds" etc). However, after that install and when the computer restarts and goes to load XP, I get the XP splashscreen for maybe 1-2 seconds, then the system reboots. I have no idea why. I know the install I am using is solid (it is running tried and true on another machine), and I have tried making a second boot disk, but every time I encounter the same problem: splash screen for a second, then restart.

I am not concerned about the other dr... Read more

So you are trying to downgrade a machine that shipped with Windows 7 to Windows XP ? If so, that would have been a better title to the thread, as downgrades are their own special set of problems.

It also would have been a good idea to note that this is a laptop.

Given that, I am having difficulty understanding why you would need "RAID drivers" for a laptop. Does this laptop have two hard drives ?

The compaq support site does not list any XP-specfic drivers for the hard drive or hard drive controller.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...1166&sw_lang=&

Have you seen this area ?

Also I'm a bit skeptical of your Driver Genius Pro software, and am wondering if that has been involved in the situation yet, and if it's a possible cause for problems.

Is this HD parititioned, with the Ubuntu O/S on one partition ? If so, it would be better to get XP installed on a single-partition drive, then make another partition for Ubuntu.

nLite is sometimes buggy, and while it is solving one problem, it could be causing another.

A bad/buggy optical drive can also corrupt system files which can cause an install to go bad.

HD's can come from the factory with errors & bad sectors. I would run HDD Regenerator (from Hiren's) to make certain the HD is good.

I ran DBAN

DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is a low level format utility. Once you start this, it begins to wipe the drive of your OS. Stopping it in the middle is too late. If you had just run System Recovery would have set your system back to Factory Defaults, but DBAN deleted that too. You cannot copy an installed OS and put it on a different computer. An OS has to be installed from a boot disc (a disc that boots the computer if the OS can't)
What is the Vista recovery disc that you have? Boot into Setup (Bios) and change the Boot order to be CD/DVD rom drive First Boot Device, Save and Exit. Restart the computer with the disc in and you should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD/DVD.If it is a Vista install DVD then you can reinstall your OS. If not a Windows disc, you can try contacting your computer manufacturer and see if you can get a Recovery DVD for your computer manufacturer Or get a Vista DVD from Ebay or Craigslist.

Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)

Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.

Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more

Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.

I've checked the HD and backuped it (it works)...  One thing is... when I connect the plug of the power supply.. the led turns on for just for 1 second and then it turns off... I'm sure the battery doesn't work... I've read the forum and it seems a motherboard fault... but my question is... can it be possible it's a matter of battery... I mean does the notebook needs a working and charged battery (or at least with a % of charge) also connecting it with the power supply  to turn on???  so Could it be a problem of the 0% charged battery? Thanks in advance!RegardsAlex

I've tried without battery, to swap the RAM memory, to use just a single bank of RAM and then the other one. I've tried to disconnect the wifi module...

A:presario cq61 won't turn on

Hi Alex, Unfortunately it's probably an issue with the system board - the notebook should work just fine when the AC Adapter is connected even with the battery completely removed. Regards, DP-K

I have a presario CQ61-315SA laptop which has a intel celeron 2.2GHz processor which is fine for my everyday use. However my son wishes to play games on the laptop that require a minimum of a2.4GHz p4 processor or equivalent. Obviously I do not want to go the the expense of buying a new PC just to play games so wondered if it would be possible to upgrade my CPU and if so does anyone have any recommendations?

A:Presario CQ61-315SA CPU upgrade

Hi: I am not sure that upgrading the processor will make much of a difference. The main culprit behind the notebook not being good at playing video games is the onboard Intel graphics. But if you want to invest a few bucks in a used but tested and working Intel Core2 Duo processor, you can give it a try. Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook. The supported processors can be found in chapter 1 on page 1-1 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01740724.pdf Because your notebook has a celeron processor, invariably it has the Mobile Intel GL40 chipset. That means the best processor you would be able to install in that model is the T6600. You cannot install any of the processors listed with a 1066 MHz FSB. Below are the specs on the GL40 chipset which indicate a maximum 800 MHz system bus. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/value-chipsets/mobile-chipset-gl40.html

Then I realized I have the AMD chipset, and thanks to this thread (http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/driver-support/422183-xp-drivers-presario-cq-61-310en.html) was able to find the Raid drivers, slipstream them with Nlite and begin.

I know the install I am using is solid (it is running tried and true on another machine), and I have tried making a second boot disk, but every time I encounter the same problem: splash screen for a second, then restart.... i hope u have gone to the compaq website and checked to see if your model of computer even has xp drivers available.if there isnt u might be out of luck or at the very least have a very hard time tracking down the correct drivers which is usually the chipset, audio, video, and internet. to go from windows 7 to xp u have to change the bios to be SATA ATA IDE or compatible to run xp properly. u go to the bios by tapping F2 right after the splash screen.hope this helps u.

Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ61 running Windows 7 64bit with a GeForce G 103M. I have had this computer for about 10 months now and 5 or 6 months ago it started heating up and it turned off one day so I download a small freeware software to see what temperatures it was reaching.I found out that the CPU was always at +-35șC (idle) and 50șCish running. My problem is the GPU. It runs at 45/50șC idle and it can reach up to 90șC if I play any kind of elaborate game. I have been searching the web for answers but I can't seem to find anything that could help me.... Could my problem be dust inside the computer? I've cleaned my PC with a compressed air gun and the temperature went down a little bit, but still it goes to high whenever I'm playing.... Is it safe to open the computer and clean it by hand? Or should I get professional help? Thanks in advance, Vasco

A:Heating problem with Compaq CQ61

Many times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out the side. It will also suck in hair, dust, and other debris. That stuff often gets trapped by the heat sink and over time builds up in a layer which chokes off the cool air going to the processor making the fan work harder. What I recommend is getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. If after doing this you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heatsink. You can check your warranty here:http://www13.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447627+1286541891570+28353475If it is out of warranty, consider searching for the maintenance manual for your specific model, in the manual there are schematics for taking apart the laptop. Cleaning the fan is much easier that removing a motherboard, so don't feel to intimidated by the idea. Also you can remove the heatsink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer which also helps alleviate heat related issues.I hope this helps. If you like my advice and it works for you, please thank me by clicking the Kudos Star under my screen name, thanks!

I have been experiencing this since returning to a regular non-usb headset, I cannot set independent headphones as default device, I have found a workaround by disabling Speakers and Headphones. I may just have to buy a new USB headset because this is driving me nuts. If Speakers and Headphones are enabled and sound is coming through my headset, minute i key my mic on Ventrilo it goes to speakers on my laptop.

think i fixed it, disabling independent headphones worked, headphones play right without jumping ship to speakers

Ok guys, this one has me hung up and I would appreciate some help. A user brought me their Compaq CQ61-420US laptop that they purchased from a pawn shop. At first the PC wouldn't even turn on. I ended up having to replace the power cord and a new battery and also had to replace the motherboard fan because it was not spinning and causing the PC to overheat. After I got the hardware part fixed I found that the PC had a lot of malware. I ran a scan and cleaned the PC up completely.

Now when I try to start the PC sometimes the PC will boot just fine and other times The PC just starts up but there is a black screen and the CAPS LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK lights flash. After I completely drain the battery and recharge it then it will fire back up normally. I've also tried different RAM but the issue still persists. I'm thinking this may be a motherboard issue but wanted to post on here and get some of your opinions.

Thanks for any input!

A:Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

The Compaq Presario CQ61-420US (WA976UA#ABA) laptop originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Because that laptop was purchased at a pawn shop and contained the programs and debris and issues from its previous owner, it needs to be wiped out and given a fresh start.

The factory restore recovery disc kit for it can be purchased here.

Hi guys,

I've isntalled Windows XP Professional (32) bit on a HP Compaq CQ61-231TU Machine with the help of nLite.

I had been using Windows XP on same machine. But this time, I'm not able to find its VGA / Graphics Drivers for XP.

Could someone please help me on this ????

Regards,
Farhan

A:HP Compaq CQ61 VGA Drivers Not Found

Here is the support and software site for the Compaq Presario CQ61-231TU laptop.
You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

The drivers and downloads section has drivers for Windows Vista and Windows 7, but not for Windows XP.
Did you downgrade that laptop to Windows XP?

That laptop appears to have either an Intel or a NVIDIA graphics device, so we need to confirm which one it has.
Go into the Device Manager and then advise the names of the entries that have a yellow ? next to them.

Hi Can someone advise me if this notebook is suitable for the Windows 10 upgrade. I've been told that it doesn't have the correct drivers. I thought that new drivers would be installed with the upgrade? Thank you Jack

A:Compaq CQ61- 401SA ( Windows 10 )

Here's the specs: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01967531 You have the Intel 4500M GMA graphics and it is a T4400 Pentium dual processor.  Windows 10 does not have a built-in driver for your video chip. However, the internet and youtube are full of workarounds. I have installed Windows 10 on several laptops with that hardware and it will work but in most cases I have eventually gone back to Windows 7 which works better on that era of hardware.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

It might be a long shot, but I will ask anyway: I have a Compaq CQ61-280EJ, with 2.10 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6500, 4GB RAM (full specs here). The operation system is Windows 7 Proffesional SP1, 64bits. I have two questions:1. The Touchpad no longer function (for two years at least). Though I can find a computer technichian that is familiar with Comapq computers, I was thinking of a DIY solution first. I think all the drivers are in order, but you can suggest something to verify that somehow. Alternately, can you send me directions to checking connections of the relative hardware circuits? 2. The computer everyday functionality became slower and slower over the years. I understand it's the natural way for computers and windows OS to be slower and slower, and I consider buying a new computer... but I'm still wondering if perhaps there's a way to upgrade either the CPU and/or RAM. The HDD is junk free (with 70GB free). So:* what RAM cards should I look for online to extend the memory (up to 8GB according to the specs)?* is there a better CPU model (it doens't have to be top of the line 2017) that is compatible for the computer and maybe it's available somewhere online for me to buy. Thanks in advance

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
