Lock Windows 7 Quick Launch icons

Q: Lock Windows 7 Quick Launch icons

I am new to Windows 7. In XP and Vista, the QL icons would stay on the left side of the taskbar, while the open programs populated across the taskbar. Is there a way to keep this setup? I do not like the look of the "always combine" option, preferring to see everything open until the taskbar is filled and then have the programs begin to stack/combine. However, with the "combine when full" option, the unopen icons get distributed between open program tabs. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My minimized windows on the Taskbar use to be rectangular while my Quick Launch icons were square. Now they are all square, and there is no way to tell a minimized window from a Quick Launch icon for the same application. Is there a simple way to make minimized windows rectangular rather than square? Thanks.

i am using xp pro and i only display 3 icons in the quick launch area of the taskbar. they are a/v, speaker vol, and firewall. these used to show up within seconds of the desktop being displayed. however, the a/v icon pops up right away, on startup, but the speaker and firewall icons wont show up for 2-3 minutes. during this time, the machine s usable (slightly slow). now i use Codestuff Starter v5.6.1.19 to control my startup items and only the 3 previously mentioned are included there. when this first started, i did a restore from when it was good and that didnt help. i am not adverse to a format if necessary. i need your help/advice and tkz in advance, aloha

Hi,

The image below shows my current taskbar when I open a window that has a quick-launch icon (e.g. Opera) as you can see it combines the window and the quick-launch icon together however I would like it to create a separate taskbar item rather than doing this. Would this be possible? Are there any programs that fix this? Sorry if this seems like a vague question but it's quite hard to explain when I can't actually show what I want it to look like.

Thanks .

Sounds like you need to right-click the Taskbar, click Properties then on the Taskbar tab make a change in the Taskbar buttons: section.

Earlier this month I purchased my first Lenovo, an IdeaPad Y700-14. Some icons added to the Quick Launch area of task bar show up as default white folders. (A few, namely CyberGhost and MS Edge show up fine.) If clicked, the white folders change to the correct icon (e.g., Word, Excel) but they revert after boot. I finally called Lenovo support today and, without any troubleshooting, was told that I need to reset my machine to factory defaults. This is the worst, and laziest, support advice I've ever received. You tell a customer who has just spent dozens and dozens of hours setting up a new machine that they need to start over? Without any troubleshooting whatsoever? And with no guarantee that it will work?  I have learned my lesson about Lenovo products and Lenovo support. If I do reset the machine, it will be to return it to Costco after I purchase a different brand of computer. So glad for Costco's outstanding return policies!

Check this Data value in the registry. (backup your registry before you make any changes)
Start> Run> type regedit then hit OK.
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click on Winlogon folder in the left pane and look for Userinit in the right panel.
The data value for Userinit should be C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
including the comma at the end. If you make a change, close regedit and reboot your computer.

There are arrows next to certain programs as well (such as Word) that USED TO show recent documents but those don't even open anymore. All that exists there is an arrow with no functionality. The bar isn't locked and nothing has changed in the system that I know of. Any ideas?

Greetings all!

If a user at my work logs onto her Windows XP computer after a reboot, her quick launch bar and all the extra icons she created in it disappear. If she right clicks the task bar and chooses properties, the quick launch option is unticked. She ticks it and the quick launch bar comes back but does not have all her extra icons on it. IE she has to recreate them!

After the next reboot, same problem!

I tried logging on as myself to see if it was a profile issue but got the same problem. This pc is on a Domain. I thought it might be a group policy thing but that is not a policy we have at work. I checked gpedit.msc on the local pc but could not find any policy relating to this issue.

I also checked this registry setting:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Program\Manager\Restrictions.

Checked that the DWORD value NoSaveSettings had a value of 0. It already did.

Does anyone know if there is a group policy settting for this?
Or, does anyone have any ideas?

I uninstalled Copernic Desktop Search on my WinXP Home SP2 system because after updating to the latest version, their tech support couldn't solve why the program's toolbar search box kept reappearing after I deactivated it multiple times.

After the uninstall and reboot, I noticed that my quicklauch icon arrangement reverted to some kind of random order. Even after rearranging them multiple times as I want them and rebooting, they still revert to the random order.

Have a feeling it has something to do with XP user preferences even though I always log on as the same user.

This was not a problem when Copernic was installed. It's as if Copernic's uninstall changed some registry setting.

Hello,

The icons in the quick-launch bar (or whatever it's called now, since it works differently after all) frequently change image. For the first few days it was all normal, then the WMP and IE(32-bit) icons swapped image, and now the WMP image has turned into my C drive's image (and IE(32-bit)'s back to normal. The 64-bit icon hasn't changed yet, by the way). They still work normally though. How to stop them from switching image?

Interestingly, this also happened on Windows XP (which was 32-bit, not the 64-bit unlike this Windows 7). However, this is a different HD, so it's definitely not a HD issue (well, unless both happen to have the same problem, but what's the chance?).

After a reformat of Win XP my Quick Launch icons won't stay how I arrange them after a reboot. I have six icons on view and another eight accessed by clicking the little arrow that displays them vertically, if you know what I mean.

It makes no difference whether the taskbar is locked or unlocked, they do not arrange themselves alphabetically at all but they do revert to the same order each time after a reboot no matter how I arrange them.

I have tried deleting and recreating the Quick Launch folder with no change in results.

Prior to the reformat I had no problem with them at all. No spyware/adware is involved - the problem began straight after the format anyway. Win XP SP1 is completely up to date with security patches, etc.

I have reformatted my computer several times in the past without this problem occurring and the only difference this time is that I used the Microsoft update CD to install most of the patches then the remaining patches were updated online.

Would anybody have any brilliant ideas on how to keep my icons in the place I order them please?

Hello,

New to the forum, so be nice if my description of my problem is confusing.

Here's my problem.

I run IE 7.0. Recently, had a problem with popup pages not working or opening a page in a new tab or new page. Nothing at all. I turned off popup blocker and still had the same problem. So, I decided to delete my IE and reinstall. Well, this didn't solve my problem. Seems like I have several versions of IE on my computer.
Once I did a reinstall, the problem still exists. Uhggggg..... but that's not my major problem.

When I rebooted, I was missing my Quick Launch Buttons that sit next to the start menu.

I did a search on the Internet and a microsoft help file told me to do ==== delete this line in my registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ClassicShell

No problem, but I don't have a classicshell in my registry. So, what should I do?

Thanks,

My wife has somehow changed the size of the icons in her QLT (Vista OS) and, as a result the toolbar is twice as broad as it was.

I have checked that the toolbar is not locked and then tried to reduce the size of the toolbar with the double arrow tool but without success. I can raise the toolbar to halfway up the screen but it will only reduce back to the current enlarged state.

I had wondered if the enlarged QLT icons are restricting the size of the toolbar or have the icons increased in size because the toolbar is now broader????
Interestingly, the icons and clock in the bottom right remain at their original size.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~3591 Mhz
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Adapter Description RADEON X600 256MB HyperMemory

Two specific problerms, but they both happened at the same time so I assume they are related.

I always have the desktop icons on the left-hand monitor, and I use the right-hand monitor for my work.

Now, I cannot position my desktop icons where I want them. I position them (of the left monitor) and a few minutes later they are all on the right monitor.

Move them back to the left monitor, and again, a few minutes later they are all back on the right.

The second symptom is the task bar. The quick-launch icons on the bottom of the screen. I used to be able to position these icons in order of my own preference. But now they don't stay like that. On a re-boot they have re-arranged themselves.

The PC is running fine in every other respect.

If I create another Windows XP user, and log on as the other user, then everything is fine. Except the sound doesn't work! And I've tried everything I can think of to get the sound working.

This annoying problem is driving me mad!

Don't know if this is application (Trend Micro) related or Vista related. Have had Trend Micro icon in quick launch since I got my laptop. However, now there is a blank where the icon used to sit. If I mouse over it, the Trend Micro tag/banner still appears. I can even double click the blank spot and it will launch the app.. I've right clicked and played with all the setting pertaining to hide/show, notification, etc.., with no luck. Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? Not crucial (app still works), but kinda of annoying with no visual...Thanks!

A:Missing Icons in Quick Launch View

Hello OnePatriot, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if when you go to the hidden Quick Launch C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch system folder, then see if you can change the Trend Micro shortcut's icon to itself a few times to see if the icon will display afterwards.

If not, then you can create a new shortcut from the Trend Micro exe file and move it into the folder above to replace the old one.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

hi,

a minor question perhaps. I drag program icons to quick launch taskbar and they are the usual icon only smaller. the big blue W for word though turns into some nondescript thing. anyway to get the big blue W?

also I dragged some folders like documents, etc and they all look the same (little tiny folders). anyway to visually differentiate them> I know one can mouse over and see what they are, but perhaps there is a way to use text?

sure is nice to have a completely icon free desktop now :-)

A:Change icons on quick launch task bar?

Actually, this is something i know how to do on XP, and have'nt played with it on Vista yet, so gimme one sec...
*Messes with computer for 60 secs*

Ok got it. If you want to change the icon for a folder, then right click on the shortcut, and select "properties"
Then click on the "shortcut" tab. Click on the "change icon" button on the bottom, and you have your selection of preloaded windows icons to choose from. If you choose "browse" from the top, you can select another icon image from another location.

To change something like the Word picture, it should be the same.... hang on... *checks*
The button for change icon doesnt work for my Word shortcut, but it might for yours.

Hope this helped you out! Let us know!

Having just upgraded my home PC from XP-32 to Windows 7 64-bit (Professional), I'm 99% happy, but with a few open questions, that I could solve in days by diligent digging, or in minutes by asking here. So here goes.

The most critical question, related to remote printing from XP machines, is asked here: Printer plugged into Win7 box - how to print from remote XP machine? and if someone can take a crack at that, great.

The other questions for now are more trite.

Keeping icons "locked in place" in the quick launch area: At my office, I have Win7 (actually I have XP, but then I log into another machine using VMWare, and that one runs Windows 7) and, as I'm used to from XP and earlier Windows editions, the quick launch icons "stay put." In my new Windows 7 setup though, if (for example) I am using Firefox, the taskbar button showing my Firefox session plops itself into the quick launch area, shoving the other icons there to the right. Since I'm often running multiple applications it gets really weird looking - quick launch icon, taskbar buttons for that application, next quick launch icon, taskbar buttons for that application, etc. My taskbar is "locked" - how do I make the quick launch icons stay put, and the application task buttons build up to the right of the quick launch area?

Sleeping PC and waking it: Sorry if my terminology is wrong here. With my XP setup, after some amount of time I'd be kicked back to the logi... Read more

Does anybody have any ideas of a program out there for alphabetizing my quick launch icons?

A:Program for alphabetizing my quick launch icons?

you have a quicklaunch toolbar on your taskbar?

i don't know of any software that will sort it.

you have to unlock the taskbar, and sort them manually i'm afraid.

I have a brand new PC with Windows XP Home. I have "users" set up for each family member, but I've noticed from time to time when switching users that the quick-launch icons will all be changed. For example, the icon for Windows Media player, when moused over, will actually be the shortcut to Internet Explorer, etc. Seems that if I log off, then back on they will all straighten out. Any ideas?
