My planned partitions for 1TB Drive

Q: My planned partitions for 1TB Drive

Here is a list of the partitions I was planning to put on my 2nd drive, a 1TB Seagate. Am I micro managing the partitions and should stay with Directories? What do you think?

Drive: K - Windows 7 OS 100GB
L - Page Files 15GB
M - Temp Files
Temp Internet Files
Downloads 100GB
N - Programs 200GB
O - Documents & Data 200GB
P - Utility Programs 100GB - I'm a Utility junky, like to try out new Utils so I
was thinking of keeping them together
R - Pics - Videos - Music 285GB - the balance

Preferred Solution: My planned partitions for 1TB Drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: My planned partitions for 1TB Drive

I would go with directories. What is the desire to create so many partitions?

500-600w is plenty, assuming your not using a dozen hard disks.

Anything from the likes of Antec (HCG models), Corsair (AX/VX/TX/GS models), Enermax, Seasonic, etc.

Let me know where you are, and how much your budget is for the power supply and I'll gladly recommend a few for you.

As stated in the title, this is what I am planning on building once I have the cash on hand! Note that there is no graphics card included in this build as I would use my current GTX 750 until Nvidia releases their pascal cards, and I have a 1 TB HDD that I would also throw into this beast

Drop me an opinion and any changes you might recommend

A:My Next Planned Rig

That 750 will be badly under used until you change it.
Unless you plan on 3 or 4 GPUs, 1200W is waste of money. 750W would be plenty for any solitary or even 2 GPUs.

I just got through putting together a new machine. I went with an MSI motherboard, 8 GB's of ram, an AMD Phenom Quad core, Nvidia PCI Express card, two Western Digital 750 GB STAT drives and a PC Power and Cooling 610 watt power supply.

Before I even loaded Vista x64 I partitioned each three into three's. I used the Disk Directors Suite component of the Acronis True Image Rescue Media Disk. It wasn't from the latest version of Acronis and I have since found out that it has caused some problems with some people. With me, I created three partitions in DOS in alphabetical order, but when I finally booted into Windows I looked in My Computer and noticed that some of the drive letters were messed up. They were fixed but I still have a concern about that.

Anyway, I had not had the fresh install of Vista on too long before I received an error message on boot up, a disk read error message. So, thinking it was just a first-time glitch , I just reloaded Windows, but later received that same message. Eventually I had to run the Vista Repair tool to get rid of it.

But ever since loading Vista things have just not run right. Problems have included simple settings not being remembered after changes were made, Windows not booting because it was missing NTLDR, the primary SATA drive not being recognized on one boot attempt, then being recognized on another and not being able to successfully burn a CD.

I have run both MemTest86 and CHKDSK and neither one turned up any probl... Read more

Hello guys, new guy here. This looks like a generally active and very helpful PC community so I decided to post my planned build here for advice before committing any cash.

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to this stuff but for the past week I've been looking into every component and learning what I should be going for in each category. I'm building the rig for gaming, by the way.

Before I go on, I would just like to state that of utmost importance to me is quietness in a PC. I understand that to achieve maximum quietness in a PC, there would either have to be a compromise in performance or I would have to spend considerably more on a high-end chassis and possibly the right fans. Power consumption is also an important factor for me.

Based on my requirements, I have come to the following build. I have taken into account what compromises I may or may not have to make. But am stuck on a couple of components and would appreciate some advice as to which direction I should go in.

This is what I've planned so far:

PSU - Be Quiet E9 600W
Motherboard - ASUS P8Z68-V LX
CPU - Intel i5 2500K (will be overclocking to around 4.5 every now and again)
Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6850/6870 (whichever is quieter under load)
RAM - Corsair XMS3 8 GB : 2 x 4 GB Memory DDR3 - DIMM 240-pin - 1600 MHz
HDD - WD Caviar Blue 500 GB - 600 MBps - 7200 rpm

I'm going to keep my curr... Read more

A:What do you think of my (planned) first build?

What resolution do you intend to game at? That will dictate the most suitable GPU for your needs.

I'd also consider other brands of PSU. The wattage is fine, but other brands like Corsair, Enermax, Antec (HCG series) etc would be good choices long term. The Corsair HX/AX range of power supplies come with a 7-year warranty.

I am planning on upgrading my computer very soon. Here is what I propose doing to it, and what the current system specifications are:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT
Memory: 2GB DDR
Hard-drive: 120GB IDE
Motherboard: ASRock PV4M890

And here is what I want it to end up like:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4GHz) Click
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT
Memory: 2GB DDR2 Click
Hard-drive: 500GB SATA Click
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E Click

On top of this I was thinking of getting a 550W PSU - Click.

If you have any of your own recommendations, please tell me them!! (Please bear in mind I'm sticking to a rather tight 350 ($726) budget overall. The current total for all of the above upgrades is 315 ($654).

Hi. Need some advice from those who'd know better.

Would I see any real-world performance increase upgrading from two GTX 470s to a GTX 6xx series GPU if I am limited to using a single 22" monitor setup?

A hereditary eye condition limits me to using a 22-inch monitor at customized [email protected] resolutions. Anything bigger and I get skull-splitting headaches and nausea. Unfortunately, a multi-monitor set up is out of the question, as well, as pretty much the same thing happens.

I presently have two GTX 470s hooked up to an old Samsung monitor that can be forced to do [email protected] (77Hz maximum). The Fermis are holding up surprisingly well with it. I can still play all my games at the highest quality and -- for the most part, get a solid 75 FPS -- provided I stay away from problematic drivers.

I'm nonetheless considering an upgrade to a single GTX 680 GPU. Would this be a sensible move or a rookie mistake? A friend has told me that -- given the limitations of my eyesight, and since the 470s are working out so well for me -- I'm better off waiting another year before I upgrade. He told me the price of 6xx series cards would be somewhat lower by then.

So am I be better off planning other upgrade paths for now?

Thanks in advance for your advice and opinion.

A:1 GTX 680 vs GTX 470 SLI: planned upgrade question

A GTX 680 would be a decent upgrade from a two 470's. You might not see too much of a difference in terms of graphics quality and performance in some older games, but the 680 is newer, more efficient and more powerful by comparison when scaled with the 470's. The 680 shouldn't break a sweat running that resolution and highest quality settings, but if you're pair of 470's are running things fine you might want to hold off.

It's ultimately up to you though, and your friend gave you good advice, it's really just a matter of personal preference and how badly you want the latest tech.

I've been given the impossible task.

I have to build for a friend a system thats faster than the PC I have in my specs (as it used to be - whe it had 512 meg of RAM), for the lowest possible price, while making it able to last for the next 5 years or so (My friend has 1 slow PC, and one from out of the arc! - It's guarenteed that it'll be used untill it's COMPLETElY obselete.). It also needs to be reasonably upgradeable.

She's not expecting miracles, and so with that in mind, please could you give your thoughts on the following....

Mobo - Jetway SKT-939 939AGP S/L SATA 1000FSB - mobo
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512KB SKT939 Retail - cpu
RAM - ADATA 256MB DDR400 CL3.0 08 Chip (x2) - memory
HDD - Western Digital Serial 80GB UDMA 150 7200Rpm 8Mb - HDD
Graphics - Xpertvision 256Mb Radeon 9550 DDR TV/DVI 8x - graphics
CD/DVD - Pioneer 109 DVD
Case - Thermaltake sviking va4000bws black - case

...and of course a floppy disk drive.

You may have noticed that all this is coming from the same shop. It's easier, and everything is being bought in person, in cash. lol

Anyways, the sum total comes to about 340, and I have about 390 to budget with.

Any suggestions/comments?

i'd have gone with the msi k8n neo2 motherboard, on account of it's features/performance and price.

Here is a list of the parts - http://www.ebuyer.com/lists/list/119001

For a PSU i'd like to buy one with some headroom so i can add a graphics card and possibly a SDD.

Also any suggestions on how i could improve on the set-up would be great too.

I recently cough a virus, and I decided to do a system restore instead of removing it.

Backed up my files, blah blah blah. Did the system restore.

Everything seemed to go well, but now I'm having several annoying problems.

The first one I noticed instantly. Everything looks blurry and stretched. It looks nothing how it looked before. I tried to change the screen resolution and the color quality, but no positive results.

The second problem I find really annoying. The windows seem to be laggy. The scrolling is laggy, the minimizing is laggy, moving the window is laggy. This didn't used to happen before I did the system restore.

The third problem is that I can't use wireless. I couldn't find the Wireless Network Connection program anywhere, so I had to look it up on search. Found it, but I couldn't open it with double click. I managed to open it by right clicking it and clicking "View Available Wireless Networks". The problem is, even if I opened it, it's not finding any networks. It immidietly tells me "No wireless networks were found in range". I click on "Refresh Network list". Again, instantly, "No wireless networks were found in range." I don't think it's trying to search for any.

All of these problems are extremely annoying. I hope you guys can help me fix them one by one.

Hi Gang,
I'm back for some input/advice. I decided to check out Win 8 for myself, after reading such mixed reviews here and on other forums. I downloaded, and burned a copy of Release preview iso. I was going to install on VMplayer, so I cranked up the VM and preceded to install it. All seemed to be going well, but I zigged when I should have zagged at some point , because when all was said and done I had overwritten my Win 7 install . Instead of being install on the VM it was installed on my SSD.
I'm now wondering if this can be reversed from a restore point, or some other method? I will clean install Win 7 if that's my only option, and give the VM other shot. May just install on a new partition on my HHD.

Thanks for being here Win7 forums!

Hi all,

This is my first visit and post on this forum... so Hello Everybody !! I'm from Belgium, I like to help when I can and I have also many questions all the time

So here's the first one I have...

We're using Lotus Notes 6.5 at my work and I encounter a problem every time I modify an already planned meeting.

Example :
- Meeting planned on next monday, from 15h30 to 16h30 ; some people were invited and they already accepted the meeting.
- Now I have to modify the meeting so it's going to be from 15h30 to 17h

>>When I save my meeting after I modified it, all my attendees disappear, so I have to resend the invitation to all the users who already accepted.

As I modified the meeting, I checked the option to notify all the attendees about the modification, so I expect from Lotus Notes to send that notify, not to remove them all from the attendees list.

Why is that ? Is there a solution ?

Thanks in advance,

A:Lotus Notes 6.5 - Modify planned meeting

Are you using the Tools Reschedule button to change the time of the meeting? It should notify all the invitees, even those who have already accepted

I was having problems with my computer and a BSOD that pointed to my hd. I decided to reinstall XP but then decided to try a repair first. The repair seems to work to an extent as pc starts fine now and seems to load normally etc. However upon starting I noticed the desktop had reverted back to default, my programs weren't listed in the start menu and favorites were gone. I was guessing that it wiped my hd like I had done a re-install. So I went to copy some of my backed up files but when I went into My Computer I see that all my files are still there under C:\Documents&Settings\Owner like before. But also under Documents & Settings are these folders now.

When I copy favorites from Owner to Owner.DESKTOP they will show up inside IE so I am guessing Owner.DESKTOP is what is running. When I go into Program Files and try to start any of my programs I get an error message saying it's not installed or similar.

So what should I do? Go ahead and re-install XP or is there a way to get rid of all that other stuff and get back to just plain Owner? (even if I have to reinstall my programs) Thanks.

What was the blue screen error that you got? IF you don't know the answer to that, what was your computer "doing" that warranted you to use the repair function, other than the BSODs?

I have 3 Partitions on Hard Drive in the Windows/Linux machine. # One is 76.77 GB, # two is 70.29 GB and #3 is 1.99 GB.  I would like to take, using Disk Management, and move #3 into #2, but is see no way to do that.  I can delete the Partition,
but then then 1.99 Gb is gone, unusable anymore.
Any Ideas on how I can do this?

Ok someone has made a mistake in installing windows in our department.

They have installed win xp, all works fine. The OS is installed on drive D but there is also a drive C.

Drive C is only 45MB in size, Drive D is 130GB.

Now the problem is that when we install certain software it wants to automatically default to C:\, which obviously wont work due to the limited disk space.

How do i go about swapping the drive letters around or the partitions? I tried disk management and it didnt let me do anything error "cannot change boot partition" this was on C.

I realy dont want to install windows xp again by deleting/formatting each partition. Any quick way around it? I know partition might have helped but i want to be sure before doing anything.

A:Drive Partitions

Drive Management won't let you do it because it sees the letter as being "in use". Have you tried changing the "C:" partition to another letter...say drive N: (just for an example ) and then changing your primary partition with your OS on it to "C:".

If that doesn't work, a program like Partition Magic might be able to fix it.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 14 laptop with a 256GB SSD. The system has seeveral partitions, including the Windows partition and Lenovo parition (which appears to just contain drivers), and the LENOVO_PART parition (which I assume to be the recovery partition. All the others are relatively small in size, but I cannot  find a description of what they are and if they are used. I would like to recover the space by the unused partitions if possible. I have attached a screen shot of the partion list. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hey. I am installing windows 10 pro right now. for two days actually. First time I was setting it up, I ran into the "language Select Loop". And because I did not create a user yet, I could do nothing. Not even acess safe mode(defaultuser0). I made a Win10 pro ISO and booted a flash. at first my pc couldnt see the flash. but after I booted it again with different settings, It worked.

But now I am in Windows setup and it asks me where do I want to install windows. I cannot instal it on none of the listed drives. It says:

How do I change the style if I cant even acess the windows itself?? this is different pc.
I would love if I could get a reply in less than 2 hours for that I have a lot of things to do with that pc.

Hello there fellow nerds,

It baffled me for a long time why does my primary drive have so many recovery and "others" partitions.
When im working with my partitions on the primary drive it is quite difficult to navigate trough as you can see.
My question is do I really need all of those partitions ( I doubt I have ever used most of them ), ofc I need EFI partition and the primary one but the rest, I just don't know.

With regards,

I just wiped out my drive. I used Partition Magic and deleted all partitions. Then I created 3 partitions. One FAT32 and two NTFS. Then I installed Win98 and it was running fine. But:

1. I have another HDD installed on the PC and I couldnt access it. When installing it says the drive is unformatted or damaged but I havent touched the other drive.

2. After installing Win98, I could not find my other partitons to install Win2k and WinXP. I have started over again. I am now formatting the entire drive as NTFS. I just want to have the entire drive accessible and partitioned, formatted.

3. When installing Win98, shodl I choose support lareg disk? It says if I do I wont be able to install other OS.

4. If I format my entire drive at NTFS right now, can quite the win2k setup and then install Win98 and partition the disk aand format the amount of space I want to FAT32?

I am running a 2TB drive on my Lenovo desktop. As it happens, it's my office machine and therefore I use very little of the space - around 60GB. I decided to speed it up by adding a 128GB SSD drive for the system, while keeping the old drive as a backup location. I am trying to work out how to efficiently clone the drive. I currently have 5 partitions listed in Windows 10, in order:1. 1000MB Recovery Partition2. 260MB EFI System Partition3. 500MB OEM Partition4. 1.8TB Boot/Page File/Crash Dump/Primary Partition (my C: drive)5. 24.41GB Recovery Partition My intention was to shrink 4 (my C: drive) to 128GB and clone it onto the SSD. I am hoping that:a) I will be able to boot my Windows 10 from the SSD as my primaryb) I will use the remaining 1.676TB of 4. to create another partition, call it D: drive, that I will use as a backup destination for my SSD.c) If anything goes wrong with the SSD, I simply skip it in the boot sequence and boot from 4. on the old drive - and use the archive on D: to recover data.d) Should it happen that I need to access any of the recovery partitions, I boot from the old drive as they are still there. Will this work as intended, or am I missing something here? Thank you!

I'm looking to build a PC that is just a notch or two below the current top specs. I would get a Mac, but it's not worth the money. Here's what I've come up with (all from tigerdirect.com):
Intel 975XBX2KR Motherboard CPU Bundle - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor 2.40GHz OEM
Ultra Gladiator ULT33181 ATX Mid-Tower Case - Black, Front USB, FireWire, Audio Ports, 500-Watt V-Series Power Supply
Ultra 1024MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory (x4)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, Serial ATA-300, OEM
EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS Video Card - FREE Enemy Territory: Quake Wars PC Game, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express, SLI Ready, Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card

I will also move a few things from my old PC:

Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Sound Card (PCI)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard Drive (PATA)
DVD+RW Drive

This would be my first build, so I have a couple specific questions. First, how close is this build to the 500W limit of the power supply? If I wanted to add a few things, would I need a larger power supply? Second, I plan to install Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic 64bit FULL. The motherboard description says that using a 64-bit system allows me to upgrade to 8GB of RAM. Can anyone explain this? Do I just install 2GB sticks with identical specs? Also, I have read that a different BIOS is needed for 64-bit systems. Will I need to flash the BIOS before installing Windows or will it support a 64-bit OS from the factory? If I do need to f... Windows Vista and newer have built-in tools that can resize volumes. See our tutorial for that here.Windows XP and earlier don't have the tools built-in, so you have to use a third party partitioning tool. We have a tutorial for that, too. This tutorial covers shrinking an existing volume to make space for a new second volume, but resizing two existing volumes is substantially similar.

Can someone explain why the storage capacity of my C drive is one tenth of the total storage capacity of the entire hard drive.  I bought this computer about 3 weeks ago with specs as follows: 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700 processor24GB DDR4 system memory2TB hard drive128GB SATA Solid State Drive Now when I go to "Settings", click on "Systems" and then on "Storage", it shows the following: This PC ( C: )61.3 GB used out of 119 DATADRIVE1 ( D: )306.7 MB used out of 1.81 TB I have downloaded less than 1 GB of programs. This seems rediculous to have the C drive with such little storage space. Is this right or is there something wrong. This is how it came out of the box.

I have a 16GB flash drive that has 2 partitions on it (NTFS for my day-to-day files, and FAT32 for the Mac OSX computers at school since they can't write NTFS).

However, windows can only see the NTFS partition.

I'd love to have 1 partition, but since I have files bigger than 2GB I need NTFS.

Does anyone know how I can access my other partition? Linux and OSX do not have this problem with my drive.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Ok, so I'm helping out a friend on this one. Isn't that always the case? He bought an 80GB harddrive and installed it. But he was getting messages saying his harddrive was full. Thinking that his HD wasn't partitioned right, as the good techie I am checked in Disk Manager and it only shows one 16GB drive. There isn't even an unpartitioned 60+ drive there. That's the first time I have ever seen that. He's running XP home on a Dell. I know that the standard first reply will be to reformat it, but we don't have another HD to use as a back up. Any thoughts? Plus, I don't have access to Partition Magic (but if you do that'd be G-R-E-A-T).
