Rich Copy questions

Q: Rich Copy questions

Hi,
I'm just starting to use Richcopy, and I was wondering if it's possible to copy an entire directory, including the creating the target directory and then copying all the files into the newly-created directory? It seems that I have to manually create
the new empty target directory, and then use Richcopy to copy the contents to the target directory?
Also, I'm looking for any hints to speed up copying directories with a bunch of large (multi-gigabyte) files. I have a Windows 7 Utimate 64-bit machine, with 16GB of RAM.
Thanks,
Jim

Preferred Solution: Rich Copy questions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Rich Copy questions

The current speed is fine. You cannot hope that only a copying tool can improve the speed much. Other conditions such as the speed of your hard drives or the structure of your files can also determine how fast the copying speed is.

Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ”

What is the significance of creating and saving Word Processed Documents in Rich Text Format? As a writer, I have experience in MS Word, Word Perfect, and Google Docs. I find that saving docs in RTF seems to create a much smaller file in MS Word, than saving a document in conventional DOC format. Furthermore, transferring files as downloads from Google Docs to Word seem to work better in RTF format than Doc formats.

I know that graphics sometimes do not transfer well to RTF formats. But other than that, what am I getting (or missing out) if I save something in Word as a RTF document? What I have noticed, when I worked in Word Perfect 12, the default file formats were generally 5-8 kb for simple letters. Using DOC extensions, when uploading from Google Docs, and saved in Word, (I have Word 2003 an upgrade disk from Word 97) that same Doc file format that used to be an RTF format expands to let's say 35kb. Is the data that is expanding in Conventional Word doc format really needed if you can get the same results as a RTF file? Or in using the Doc.extension in Word, is this Microsoft's way of just adding crap to a text file that is not needed?

When I have transferred letters from Google Docs to Word, I have seen instances where the Inside Address is double-spaced when I download it as a Word Doc from Google Docs. I cannot get the Inside Address of the letter lines to single-space. Saving docs from Google Docs to Word as RTF files, I may only have to modify one headin... Read more

A:Questions About Word Processing and Rich Text Formats?

As odd as it may seem, .RTF is also a semi-proprietary format (created by MS but released for general use by others) and, while it does make for smaller files, I find it to have major disadvantages in complex formatting. If my document is simple enough for an .rtf, it often is simple enough for a plain text (.txt) file, which is much smaller again.
The new Word format, docx, is a variation of XML, which is simpler in structure and leads (as I understand it) to smaller files also. However, until I get Office 2007, I can't give you any comparative sizes.

Hey All,

I know a few people that have no word processing software on their computers. What I need to know is if I send them a Rich Text File, by converting it from Word to an RTF file format two questions:

1.) Will they be able to open the file?

2.) What is the default application for opening such files in Windows Vista and Windows 7, if there is no word processing software on the computer at all? For example, I know that Windows XP has Word Pad built into the OS as a very limited, but quick word processing program. What default applications are used for Windows Vista and Windows 7 in this instance?

Before I knew that these people did not have any word processing software on their computers, I sent them a MS Word document and they could not open it. So can I convert the documents to RTF format? Or am I stuck using E-Mail to copy and paste the text to them until they get a word processing program installed?

Thanks in advance.

I had  pre-installed manufacturer WIN 8 software on my computer.  I made recovery disks.  (you are only allowed one copy)  I think I made a mistake in upgrading to the 8.1 version.  I thought it was just an update.  I didn't realize it was going to be so involved.  If my computer fails to start, I don't know if I should make just a recovery disk, or if I can get a COPY of the WIN8.1 version.  It said once you go to 8.1, you can't go back.  I didn't like that.  Can anyone tell me more about what single copy I can make, and how to do it?  If you make a copy to a flash drive, and it fails, you are up a creek.  So I would rather have a dvd copy.  But just for if WIN 8.1 won't start, a bootable pen drive would be nice.  But once again, it said only one copy.  This is confusing to me.  I don't have an external hard drive, or anything to make a full back up on yet.  I do have my pictures, and documents saved to a pen drive though.

A:Just downloaded 8.1 have questions on making copy

You are only allowed one copy per license, not one image per media that you create (ie you can have a copy on a Blu-Ray, DVD, USB drive, Pen Drive).  As for what to do if your hard drive goes South, you can contact your computer manufacturer, and order a copy of 8.1 for that model of computer, or reinstall 8, then download the 8.1 iso from Microsoft, and save the .iso to a DVD, so you can reinstall 8.1 after installing 8 back on your hard drive.

Of course there is always making a image of the hard drive and making a boot disc, to restore that image also.

I have read several times about avoiding copy/paste, such as in the example below

Dim wsSymbols As Worksheet, wsPigPen As Worksheet
Dim i As Integer, iMax As Integer, iMin As Integer

wsSymbols.Select
Range(Cells(iMin, 1), Cells(iMax, 1)).Select
Selection.Copy
wsPigPen.Select
Range(Cells(i, 1), Cells(i + iMax - 1, 1)).Select
ActiveSheet.Paste

I would love to use something like
wsSymbols.Range(Cells(iMin, 1), Cells(iMax, 1)).Copy _
Destination:=wsPigPen.Range(Cells(i, 1), Cells(i + iMax - 1, 1))

or something like
wsPigPen.Range(Cells(i, 1), Cells(i + iMax - 1, 1)).Value = _
wsSymbols.Range(Cells(iMin, 1), Cells(iMax, 1)).Valule

and I have run across others that avoid using the clipboard saving
memory and time.

I have omitted the "Range", I have used select this or that, but I
can't get any of them to work, never have gotten them to work,
the results, I have dozens of macros using Copy/Paste. In my
current problem, no real big deal, the cells are simple text & no
special formatting. In other cases the worksheet is huge and
contains hundreds of hyperlinks and it takes for ever just to
load the selection onto the clipboard, the formatting has to remain
intact. All of the examples on the internet that I have found use cell
identification using cells("A1"), but none using cells(1, 1), or in my case
were the rows and/or columns are identified with variables.

So any help with this would greatly improve my macros, speed things up,
and free up... Read more

A:Questions on Cut,Copy/Paste vs. using Destination, = & Values

What you need to avoid is all that selecting, copy go to another range and select and then paste.
Code:

Dim wsSymbols As Worksheet, wsPigPen As Worksheet
Dim i As Integer, iMax As Integer, iMin As Integer

Set wsSymbols = Sheets("Sheet1")
Set wsPigPen = Sheets("Sheet2")

Application.ScreenUpdating = False

[COLOR="red"]' your code here wher you determine what's iMin and iMax
' probably a loop[/COLOR]

wsSymbols.Range(Cells(iMin, 1), Cells(iMax, 1)).Copy
wsPigPen.Range(Cells(i, 1), Cells(i + iMax - 1, 1)).PasteSpecial

[COLOR="Red"]' the next item
' loop[/COLOR]

Application.ScreenUpdating = True

Above your code editted to allow for the copy and pasting
I did not test this but this would be the general idea.

Application.ScreenUpdating = False to start with
and
Application.ScreenUpdating = True to end with will speed things up too

1) I have Norton Ghost. Is the best idea to partition my computer and put the ghost copy in that partitioned area as opposed to putting it on 4 or 5 cd's?

2) I have Paragon for my 64 bit Vista, and I'm starting to feel like a moron. I will go through the complete set-up portion of making a partition, and it says it's only in a virtual set-up at this point. So I 'apply' those actions and it brings up an error saying that it can't complete the task b/c C: drive is being used. Uh, yeah, of course it is, how do they think I'm running that dang program! Obviously this must be my mistake/error, so any help would be very much appreciated.

3) Is 25 gigs enough for the general 'Joe' to partition?

Thank you!

chad

A:Ghost copy to partitioned space questions/problems

Having it on a separate partition is OK it the C: partition becomes corrupt, but it won't be of any use if the hard drive becomes damaged. I put mine on a USB hard drive

Not familiar with Paragon, sorry

25 gigs should be fine

It has been discussed that many of the ransomware programs use the vssadmin.exe program that wipes clean all volume shadow copys (restoration copies) to make recovery of your system impossible.

Discussions don't recommend disabling the shadow copy program (Recovery), just the vssadmin.exe which erases all recovery copies.

The main article that details this is here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/why-everyone-should-disable-vssadmin-exe-now/

My question is that when I follow the instructions in the above article, and run the utility, it only allows me to alter one of the eight vssadmin.exe (and vssadmin.exe mui) files.

Specifically, the utility allowed me to get permission and change the name on the 64 bit version (so if hit my ransomware it will not find that file).  But what about these vssadmin files?  Do I need to do something about them?

This is a screen shot of the remaining search results for "vssadmin.exe" AFTER the 64 bit program was renamed in the above referenced link.

Hi, I'm not sure where those two amd64 and x86 folders are.
system32 and SysWOW64 are important system folders for windows. I would definitely disabled, renamed or in any other whay disabled those if possible.
When you have decided to disable vssadmin. If you do similar stuff to notepad.exe you won't be able to run notepad,
so you could experiment by renaming notepad and se when notepad commands does not happen.

I have two computers. I lost my hard drive on computer 1. I would like to transfer my Outlook addresses etc from my computer 2 to computer 1. Is there an easy way to do this?

A:Rich

Outlook keeps all its data in one file, "outlook.pst." Search the drive for that file and once located, use Outlook's File>Import and Export wizard on Computer 1 to import the data from it.

It's a hidden file so be sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked in Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab.

If it's Outlook Express, its addresses are stored in a .wab file so the search should be for "*.wab" (without the quotes, with the asterisk and dot).

Yesterday I was looking over a document that I made that consisted of text selections of PDFs. I was looking at the document and then looking at the folder that contained the PDFs to determine what I had included in my document and what needed selections therefrom added. I thought to myself, boy would it be great if I could just put a little check mark next to those PDFs that I had entered into the document already. My solution was to make a copy of the entire PDF folder and rename the files by putting a 'CHECK' next to the ones that were already in the document.

So, is there software out there that allows a user to mark up there operating system in the way that I describe?

What kind of document is it? In Excel, you could just use checkboxes with a yes/no statement and if checked=yes and not checked=no.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong and as to how I might correct the situation? Thanks, grandpaw7

A:Firefox And Rich Text

This may sound a little anti M$ but I have always found that Hotmail hated non microsoft browsers. Even their new Windows LiveMail beta looses a lot of it's functionality in firefox (one more reason to justify my move to Gmail)

I am running Windows 8 using Hotmail as my email. When composing an email, I used to switch to Rich Text to vary the colour of the font. Now if I click on the "A" in the Hotmail title bar, the colour table drops down, but as soon as I move the cursor, the table disappears, making it impossible to change the colour of the font. I should point out that this only occurs in IE 10, Mozilla Firefox works fine. Can anyone advise please.........Dave

Hi - I am hoping somebody out there can help me with a frustrating problem I have with my hotmail account at the moment.

My 2 month old Dell desktop has suddenly stopped me from applying the rich text format when composing a hotmail message. In fact it will not even revert to standard text only mode, and sends blank emails. In fact I see I have the same 'Error on page' message in the left hand corner of the browser with this website where I am writing this mail, as I do on hotmail new message window. I get the following error message:

Error: 'L_Default_Body_Style' is undefined

I thought it was a Java isssue, and have since uninstalled and re-installed it, but with no luck.

Any hints ?

I have Outlook set to create and send email in HTML. However, everything seems to go as Rich Text. I'm using Outlook 2003. The Mail format options are set to compose in HTML and to use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit e-mail messages.

I have the same problem even when I turn off the option to use Word as the e-mail editor.

The usual symptoms of Rich Text are happening. Recipients who do not use Outlook get the winmail.dat attachment and can't read it.

I've checked everything I can think of, but this still happens. Any help/guidance/suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Buddy,

Re: your help regarding my PC problem > SoftwareBundles/Win 32/KaZaZ.

I downloaded BitDefender, and AGV antivirus, as you advised. I nearly fell outa my desk chair, when the BitDefender found 401 infected items, infected with three different viruses!

Now my computer is running sweet again. Thanks a million, Rich M.

I accidentally clicked to turn on rich text format in hotmail and now it wont turn off. Every time I click to turn it off it comes up with a yellow error box saying to click here to fix, when I click a window comes up saying that turning off rich text will change the format of the email. I click OK and it just refreshes the screen with the rich text still on. This is a real problem as I am trying to contact someone who is unable to open the .txt file that the email is sending as. Any help would be appreciated

I don't have a Rich Text document to use when I want to open a new file. I have WordPerfect X3. But I don't have the disk to download the program again.

So all I can use is a text document or WordPerfect X3.

The Rich Text Document has been missing for a while now.

Is there something that I can download from Microsoft to get it back? I have been searching and can't find anything.

A:Solved: The Rich Text Document is gone.

FYI, I'm not an expert in this area, I am simply sharing my experience so that others can avoid the frustration I felt. I just finished a bitter struggle to the end to reconcile the differences between my computer and a mysterious problem I was having using the Rich Text Editor on this forum. Okay, so that sounds a bit melodramatic. The story goes like this: I was experiencing two problems using the editor on here with RTE enabled (in my settings) and one with it turned off. FYI, I'm using FF10.After entering the full editor from Fast Reply, or after clicking Preview Post, everything in the editor would be formatted just as in the preview. Well, almost everything. Some things were wrong. That means that, instead of plain text with BBCode and emoticon code, in the EDITOR I saw the preview of the codes, and I couldn't edit the coding.
If I used list tags and either went from Fast Reply to the full editor, then previewed once; or if I previewed twice, some of the list tags would be displayed incorrectly. Usually the first one or two * would be okay but, after that, they'd be replaced by <li>. When I paid close attention, I noticed that the first time there was a preview in the editor, the affected list tags showed up as bullets, not numbers, and the second preview both the preview and editor showed <li> for the broken * tags.

There was only one way to fix this problem. Before pressing "Use Full Editor" or Preview Post, I had to cop... Read more

Hi there

I've been told a few times now by different people that they have issues replying to my emails or sending me emails unless they switch to rich text.

I hazard a guess that many people just give up so I need to get it sorted as I use my email for work and it's vital!

I use one.com as my host and mac mail as client.

After hours of failed online research, I wondered if anyone has faced this problem and if there's a way to fix...I don't want to make hard work for people trying to get in contact with me
Much appreciated

Jimmy

Hey all.

The situation is: I would prefer to use Firefox all the time but it doesn't sit well with Hotmail's rich-text editor. If you access Hotmail via FF and then try to reply a mail, the included original text turns into plain-text HTML code.

So I try to turn off the rich-text editor by using IE6 (WinXP SP2) to access Hotmail, but I can't. The same pop-up would come up warning that formatting will be removed from signatures and draft messages, and the rich-text toolbar would remain in place.

I looked at this post:
weblink = forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=390383&page=2
but it didn't help.

I've mailed MSN support and followed their suggestions (changed security and advanced options back to default) and still no luck. Am currently waiting for their follow-up mail.

I've replicated the problem on two different PCs and using two different Hotmail accounts. So I can safely assume that it's to do with the programming of that site?

Just want to put this out here to try my luck with you guys. Thanks.

p.s. Yes have considered moving away from Hotmail but I thought that there has to be a solution. M$ can't possibly force ppl to use HTML in Hotmail right?
