locked drive

Q: locked drive

I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it? Thanks
Frank

Preferred Solution: locked drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

I just got a new/used Acer Aspire One laptop. The OS on the Acer and my home computer (a Gateway laptop) is Win 7 Home 32 bit. A Cruzer 4gb USB flash drive came with the Acer laptop.
The USB flash drive has been split up. 3.73gb's is on the original (drive letter G) and 97meg's is on a virtual drive (drive letter F). According to Win 7 computer management. The virtual drive on the USB stick is locked. Every attempt to dump the virtual drive and make the hole USB flash drive 4gb's with 1 drive letter have hit a dead end. I can reformat the 3.73gb on the original drive letter G but the virtual drive F remains read only. And I don't need the prog stored there anyways.

you can't do it from windows as it locks the drive.
You will need to boot from the rescue CD and

Hey everyone, I'm really hoping for a miracle here and that someone can help me. I stupidly have denied myself access to the entire C drive. Was fiddling around w/ permissions to try to set up a guest account and clicked the "deny" buttons for the C drive, and now I can't access it all (this is using administrator account). I can't reset the priveleges, won't even allow me access to that.

I have spent the last two days trying to find a solution online but nothing works. Tried ERD commander but it doesn't work with vista. Have tried talking to my tech friends and even they can't figure it out. I can't access anything on C and cannot reset the permissions, even as an administrator.

Please, please help!!!

Where exactly does it give this error? At what point in the install process? Have you tried deleting the partition first and then installing (If you do this, you will lose any data on the drive, so only do it if your data is backed up).

After thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.

I have put another copy of XP onto my D:\ drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C:\ drive which is a lot of bother.

I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.

Enter y and press on Enter;Restart your computer, and the chkdsk scan will be launched automatically;WARNING: Depending on your hard drive (specs, free space, fragmentation, etc.) this scan can be relatively long to complete. Give it all the time it needs to finish. Do not interrupt it for any reason there is, or you might be damaging your drive in the process and make your Windows unbootable. Hi all, so here's an interesting problem. A friend of mine managed to use the cacls administrative tool to lock himself out of his c drive, which windows was unfortunately installed on. He "had" two admin accounts, one TestAdmin, one his name. He used cacls to lock the TestAdmin account out of c drive access, or so he thought. Apparently he managed to lock himself completely out of c drive, and now his computer won't boot. The first problem he encounters is that it asks what to boot from, and when he selects the hard drive it seems to boot normally. Then it comes up with "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK". After this it just tries to boot up again, and encounters the same problems.

Is it possible to fix this without completely deleting the My Documents folder, because there is information that he needs to use next Saturday.

He has the Windows install disk if needed.

Perform a Repair Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

Hi, not sure how I've done it but I was trying to share my c: drive with another laptop in the house and somehow I've managed to change the permissions so that the c: drive is read only to all users including admins!

I'm an administrator user but can't access the drive. I've activated the Vista Administrator user but nor can that.

I've done some googling and I can get an elevated cmd prompt by safe boot with command prompt and run the secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose command but that hasn't sorted it

So, I'm now at a loss as to how to reset the permissions back so I can fully access it. My next option I think is to remove the hdd and put it in a USB caddy, and then recover all the user data onto a new hdd with a fresh Vista install on.

..unless anyone knows another way round the problem?

Hello guys, I just registered because i have no solution for my situation...

I'll try to describe in detail what happened to my hard drive, where I have all my info and have no backup...

i had an ssd removed from Zenbook and installed in Sony Vaio (120 GB, 2.5 gb free for now, of most crucial information, kid's photos, music library, my work for 2 years...). My Vaio was getting a bit old so decided to get replacement and leave this one to my wife. I bought used Vaio, newer model which had just sata hdd.
And here I decided to swap the drives. I put my ssd to newer laptop, and it started some automatic repairs. When windows booted, most apps were not accessible and some other stuff was messy too.

Well this newer Vaio had some cooling problems so i returned this laptop to seller, with its original hdd, and when i put my ssd to my older Vaio, it did the same repair thing, but i expected that it would boot in normal state with all the apps functioning as before. But the files still were inaccessible.

I left this laptop for short period of time and went to buy another one, as i got the refund from the seller. I got home, and thought to install all required software and make backup and copy files from ssd to new laptop, to fix both laptops together. When i turned on my old Vaio, the blue screen appeared and said that windows crashed and i needed recovery tools or something. after that, i removed ssd and tried to use it as external drive to copy my files, connected with usb. A:Drive is locked! I'm desperate....

First of all, Windows can't be transferred from one laptop to another. If you switch SSD/HDD, Windows need to be re-installed from scratch. Running "Startup Repair" or "CHKDSK" won't make the OS working on a completely new hardware.

Then I tried to instal windows as upgrade option to keep my files. It wrote that drive was locked.
I tried to instal windows as fresh, but it said that i had not enough storage on drive (i have 2.5 gigs of free memory).

2.5 GB is not enough space so re-installing is also not an option. Connecting the SSD as a slave drive via USB and transferring data to the new laptop is the first thing you should do.

i removed ssd and tried to use it as external drive to copy my files, connected with usb. The drive appeared but was inaccessible, even didn't show me the capacity of drive.

Probably the USB enclosure might be faulty. Cheap enclosures are not reliable at all. They sometime work and sometime not. Make sure to buy a good quality one with generally positive reviews.

To make sure the SSD is working and your data still accessible, connect the SSD to a direct SATA port of a laptop/desktop and boot the system using a "Linux" CD like "Puppy".

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux...-5.7.0-PAE.iso

If you can browse the partitions and access data, it will be the enclosure which is faulty.

Hardware problem??? Mobo??? Hard Drive??? Are your files backed up off computer? If yes, try reinstalling with the Win8 DVD. Doesn't sound promising though. Don't try if you are afraid of losing anything on your computer. Note that your drive might not be bad. Thus, file recovery might be possible via another computer or your computer if repaired.

i dont think that there is anything physical different about an Xbox hdd, maybe if you ran a low level format on it, it would allow you to use it then, you will have to have the make/model ie seagate, western digital, etc. and d/l the makers disk utility to a bootable 1.44 floppy disk or burn an iso image to a cd.

You could try placing it in a zip lock bag, and putting the drive in a freezer for 1-2 hours, then hook it up and see if it'll work. It won't work for long if it does, so get what you need off it immediately.

Hello,

I am in trouble - I locked myself out of my C drive by accident. I had intended to simply restrict C drive access for the guest user account (using the properties>security tab), however the change carried through for my own user account.

I get 'Access Denied' whenever I try to save anything to the C drive, access it, etc. ALSO, many control panel items have the little Microsoft 4-color security shield next to it, and I cannot access the items (when I click on them, nothing opens - like I am restricted, but there is no pop-up message).

For instance, when I click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off', nothing happens. Also, when I try to run the command prompt as Administrator, it does not work - I get a pop-up saying 'parameter is incorrect'. Basically I have no permissions on this machine at all any longer.

Is there anyway to regain access to my C drive?! Or, will I have to re-install Vista. I will loose a lot of data if I have to do this. Any help would be appreciated!!!

I have a wd 3200 sata hdd. i have been using it for about a year or so for backups. I now have a problem with it.
If it is plugged in at post i get a bios error and am forced into setup.
If it is not plugged in I get No errors.

Windows no longer recognizes the drive. the drive does not spin up.
Linux recognizes the drive and all files are still present. the drive is fully functional.

The bios does not acknowledge the drive
But it does indicate that there is 'something' attached to sata3 or 2 or whatever channel i am trying at the momment.

My CD/DVD-ROM drive is acting up. It appears to load a CD, but then the "busy" light flashes continuously, and if I try to explore the drive, I get the message "drive is not accessible: retry/cancel." One message I received (can't remember how I got it) said the drive is locked by disk utility (or something like that).

Does it need cleaning? Is it toast? Help!

my hard drive was remotely locked.i cannot use recovery disks that i paid for from gateway.how do i unlock or should i get a new copy of win 7 to reinstall.? gateway nv53a 3ghz processor 4gb ram. i am using ubuntu which by the way is excellent.

How was the hard drive locked? Knowing that is likely the key to unlocking it.

If you use an unlocked hard drive you should be able to use your Recovery disks. A Windows 7 installation DVD would find your current hard drive to be just as locked as anything else does.

I don't understand how this is a Web & Email issue, but don't know which forum would be "correct."

How is this drive connected? Are you trying to access it from Windows?

What does Disk Management say about the drive (right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management)?

I am in need of assistance. I have a 30 GB Seagate IDE HDD with a Windows XP x64 Edition PC. Anyhow, I used an application known as "Lock My Folder." Apparently, I tried to lock that drive. When I did so I was doing something to try and lock it (saying something like "Unable to lock drive" or some nonsense). Anyhow when I did this I unlocked the drive, supposedly, and removed the drive from the list. Now when I try to open the drive under My Computer it says something about "Access Restricted". Now the problem is that Lock My Folder says the same thing about the drive and doesn't recognize it as a locked drive.

What I know is that I CAN access the data inside the drive but I must know the folder in the drive in order to open it. I want to fix this drive w/o clearing the drive of the data so that I can re-access it from My Computer again and etc.

I NEED HELP!

I have the same problem and the bootrec commands won't work. it says windows installation not found even if there is a Windows 7 installation inside the locked hard drive. I just want to unlock the hard drive. I can't access the BIOS either. It is an HP Elitebook 8460p. When I connect the hard drive to another computer via a USB to SATA adapter, even if Hard Drive diagnostics tool sees it, the computer won't see it, so I can't access the contents. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi guys. I have 2 PC's. PC1 has 2 DVD Drives & PC2 has 1 DVD Drive. PC2's DVD will not open for me, the light flashes for a bit, but then nothing. I took a DVD Drive from PC1 & put it into PC2; same issue with that Drive which makes me think it's not a Drive issue in itself. Here's the really weird part. I swapped the Drives back & now a previously good Drive from PC1 exhibits the same symptoms as the first Drive from PC2. I have tried removing software and upper/lower filters, checking cables, swapping power plugs, firmware upgrades, Bios upgrades, etc. I tried all the stuff I read to try from other forums with 'not opening drives'. The second Drive from PC1 (which never saw PC2 opens BUT spits disks out after closing). The only clue I have so far is from IsoBuster which told me that 'another application has locked the drive (possibly UDF packet software like InCD, etc)' pressing OK told me that it could force open the drive (I smiled). But it wasn't to be. 'Unexpected error and Retry exhausted''Device reported Error code : 04/53/00'. The only thing I can think of is when I had to manually power-down PC2 because it froze during a game; with the game DVD inside, & that somehow the game has locked the Drive & locks any other Drives connected to that hardware location on the primary IDE. I need HELP PLEASE. Perhaps a groovy little program that will unlock the Drives or a manual edit. Thanks.

While online there is a background .exe that runs constantly until I get warnings of it using 90% of one CPU. Norton 360 says that everyhting is OK.

So, I was trying to salvage files from my friend's computer when it caused my Windows 8 laptop to crash. It crashed so badly in fact, that I had to pull out my recovery USB. Except none of the recovery options work.

Refresh tells me the harddrive is locked. Reset tells me a partition is missing. I can't use system restore, I don't have a system image (and even if I did I'm sure I wouldn't be able to use it), and startup repair tells me it can't fix my machine.

Now, I'm a wee bit familiar with DOS. Enough so that I feel kinda okay with using some basic commands. Chkdsk by itself says the volume label is Boot and the file system is NTFS, and errors detected in the uppercase file (no idea what this means). Chkdsk /F tells me the drive cannot be locked and it is write protected. However, chkdsk c: says the file systen is FAT32 and there are no issues. (so far it seems somehow the OS system of my friend attempted to transfer itself to my harddrive...?)

List disc says I have two discs. 0 being 931GB, 1 bein 31GB. (I'm assuming 1 is my recovery disc?) Setting disc 0 to active and then entering list partition tells me there are no partitions on disc 0.

So... What to do? Again, I'm a wee bit familiar with DOS. This is about the extent of my knowledge in fact, and most of this I had to look up and research.

Thanks!
