locked drive

Q: locked drive

I have windows 8.1 and am trying to do a refresh as I've had some problems. But I keep getting a message that says, "The drive where windows are installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I then did a scan using "SFC/SCANNOW" When it was finished it said that it found some corrupt files but could not fix some of them. So the question is: What is a locked drive and how do you unlock it? Thanks
Frank

Preferred Solution: locked drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

I just got a new/used Acer Aspire One laptop. The OS on the Acer and my home computer (a Gateway laptop) is Win 7 Home 32 bit. A Cruzer 4gb USB flash drive came with the Acer laptop.
The USB flash drive has been split up. 3.73gb's is on the original (drive letter G) and 97meg's is on a virtual drive (drive letter F). According to Win 7 computer management. The virtual drive on the USB stick is locked. Every attempt to dump the virtual drive and make the hole USB flash drive 4gb's with 1 drive letter have hit a dead end. I can reformat the 3.73gb on the original drive letter G but the virtual drive F remains read only. And I don't need the prog stored there anyways.

After thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.

I have put another copy of XP onto my D:\ drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C:\ drive which is a lot of bother.

I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.

Hey everyone, I'm really hoping for a miracle here and that someone can help me. I stupidly have denied myself access to the entire C drive. Was fiddling around w/ permissions to try to set up a guest account and clicked the "deny" buttons for the C drive, and now I can't access it all (this is using administrator account). I can't reset the priveleges, won't even allow me access to that.

I have spent the last two days trying to find a solution online but nothing works. Tried ERD commander but it doesn't work with vista. Have tried talking to my tech friends and even they can't figure it out. I can't access anything on C and cannot reset the permissions, even as an administrator.

Please, please help!!!

Hi, not sure how I've done it but I was trying to share my c: drive with another laptop in the house and somehow I've managed to change the permissions so that the c: drive is read only to all users including admins!

I'm an administrator user but can't access the drive. I've activated the Vista Administrator user but nor can that.

I've done some googling and I can get an elevated cmd prompt by safe boot with command prompt and run the secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose command but that hasn't sorted it

So, I'm now at a loss as to how to reset the permissions back so I can fully access it. My next option I think is to remove the hdd and put it in a USB caddy, and then recover all the user data onto a new hdd with a fresh Vista install on.

..unless anyone knows another way round the problem?

Hi all, so here's an interesting problem. A friend of mine managed to use the cacls administrative tool to lock himself out of his c drive, which windows was unfortunately installed on. He "had" two admin accounts, one TestAdmin, one his name. He used cacls to lock the TestAdmin account out of c drive access, or so he thought. Apparently he managed to lock himself completely out of c drive, and now his computer won't boot. The first problem he encounters is that it asks what to boot from, and when he selects the hard drive it seems to boot normally. Then it comes up with "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK". After this it just tries to boot up again, and encounters the same problems.

Is it possible to fix this without completely deleting the My Documents folder, because there is information that he needs to use next Saturday.

He has the Windows install disk if needed.

CPU Athlon 3200+ 2.2GHz
1GB DDR Corsair PC2100 (We think)
Asus K8V
Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB AGP

Sorry for the lack of system specs, but we built it a long time ago, and don't remember what exactly is in it.

Thanks in advance.

Not familair with the porgram at all, mayb a Repair Install will work?

Perform a Repair Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

Hardware problem??? Mobo??? Hard Drive??? Are your files backed up off computer? If yes, try reinstalling with the Win8 DVD. Doesn't sound promising though. Don't try if you are afraid of losing anything on your computer. Note that your drive might not be bad. Thus, file recovery might be possible via another computer or your computer if repaired.

I am in need of assistance. I have a 30 GB Seagate IDE HDD with a Windows XP x64 Edition PC. Anyhow, I used an application known as "Lock My Folder." Apparently, I tried to lock that drive. When I did so I was doing something to try and lock it (saying something like "Unable to lock drive" or some nonsense). Anyhow when I did this I unlocked the drive, supposedly, and removed the drive from the list. Now when I try to open the drive under My Computer it says something about "Access Restricted". Now the problem is that Lock My Folder says the same thing about the drive and doesn't recognize it as a locked drive.

What I know is that I CAN access the data inside the drive but I must know the folder in the drive in order to open it. I want to fix this drive w/o clearing the drive of the data so that I can re-access it from My Computer again and etc.

You could try placing it in a zip lock bag, and putting the drive in a freezer for 1-2 hours, then hook it up and see if it'll work. It won't work for long if it does, so get what you need off it immediately.

I went into BIOS and it does not let me highlight the hdd password to change or delete it, so I am guessing it is not in bios. Possible reason, there may be 2 different bios accounts\passwords, one for general users (with restrictions) and one for admin (with access to all settings).

How was the hard drive locked? Knowing that is likely the key to unlocking it.

If you use an unlocked hard drive you should be able to use your Recovery disks. A Windows 7 installation DVD would find your current hard drive to be just as locked as anything else does.

I don't understand how this is a Web & Email issue, but don't know which forum would be "correct."

I've got a hard drive from an ancient pc of mine with a lot of music on it. I was planning on pulling the drive and giving the computer to a friend, but during the process of cleaning it, I must've damaged the board. The thing won't boot, but I'm not super concerned about it.

The only problem is, when trying to get to my music from my new pc, the old account holding the music was password protected. I can get into the guest account fine, but I lack permission to look at the old admin.

I could just get the board on the old one looked at, fix the problem from there and then unlock the account, but it's a bit worthless for a pc I'm not using.

So, anyway I can get into the slave drive?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

A:Locked out of hard drive

If you pulled the drive as you say, then attach it to your new computer, either as a Slave drive to the Hard Drive that boots the computer or in an external USB Enclosure/Adapter. You do not need to log into an account to access the music that is on an external drive.

I get 'Access Denied' whenever I try to save anything to the C drive, access it, etc. ALSO, many control panel items have the little Microsoft 4-color security shield next to it, and I cannot access the items (when I click on them, nothing opens - like I am restricted, but there is no pop-up message).

For instance, when I click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off', nothing happens. Also, when I try to run the command prompt as Administrator, it does not work - I get a pop-up saying 'parameter is incorrect'. Basically I have no permissions on this machine at all any longer.

Is there anyway to regain access to my C drive?! Or, will I have to re-install Vista. I will loose a lot of data if I have to do this. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Recently I downloaded a software "EasyDriveLock.V4" trial version having mentioned 5 free trials. Using this software I locked my D:\ drive and checked for the same and found its access denied, but when i'm trying to unlock it with the same software the D:\ has greyed out for unlocking and directs the page to the software site asking for purchasing though it was a free trial version.

Please help

I am loking for a bigger hard drive, and looked at one which the seller had in an xbox. He says the xbox locked it and I wondered what it would take to unlock it

i dont think that there is anything physical different about an Xbox hdd, maybe if you ran a low level format on it, it would allow you to use it then, you will have to have the make/model ie seagate, western digital, etc. and d/l the makers disk utility to a bootable 1.44 floppy disk or burn an iso image to a cd.

I have 2 problems. I have 2 drives, one with Windows and such, and the other with about 1,000 games that my girlfriend plays. She let her grandson on, unsupervised, and the next thing is a trashed system drive.

Unfortunately, there was no way to save it, so I did a format and clean reinstall of XP Home. Goback was on the drive, and there was no way to uninstall it before the reinstall. The reinstall went fine, but the GAME drive is virtually inaccessible. It doesn't show in My Computer, but does show in Admin Tools, Disk Management. However, the drive name is shown as F(F. It should either be D: or F: ( there are 2 optical drives). I can't change the name or drive letter. I get the error "the drive is locked".

I tried Partition Magic, and it will change the info, temporarily. Also, PM shows the drive as *.F It doesn't give any error message, and says the change has been applied, but it obviously hasn't.

I searched this forum for "hard drive locked" and followed suggestions that I had not tried previously.

The smiley replaced a colon; the entry should read F(F.

Sometimes I think I might know what I'm doing, and then I realize, maybe not.

Hello so before this problem occurred I attempted to transfer my main drive with Windows 10 on it to a larger drive using the western digital software. After this my computer restarted, and when I tried signed in I would get a flickering screen/black screen with cursor. I tried to boot into safe mode and I was given a white screen with and infinite dots would circle in the center, and blink black every minute. I couldn't do anything, so I attempted a refresh. Once I did that that the infinite blue screen with white dots continued. So I booted Windows off of my Usb and attempted to fix startup problems, and none were detected. Then I tried to refresh/backup, and I was given a message that said, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." At this point I went into command prompt and saw that my two drive were online, but I am unsure how to unlock them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Sounds like you copied the partition improperly. If you still have the original Drive, use any old version of Paragon Partition Manager. Or any partition manager that boots off a disk or flash drive.

You will have to delete the partition on the new drive, then put both drives back in to the PC and then boot to the Partition Manager. Then you use the function that copies the whole DRIVE, not just one partition. See, if you only copy the Windows Partition, it will not boot, because you also have to have the small partition (100mb or so) that precedes it on the disk.

You can also use Mini Tool partition Wizard from Within Windows. Boot to your original drive, then download MiniHome Partition Wizard (free- Google it). Then pull that up, and tell it to copy the whole old drive to the whole new drive, make sure the new drive is unformatted.

It will start then it will force a reboot, just let it go and it will start the copy during the next boot. Keep your eye on it, it will take several hours. Don't let it complete the boot, shut off the PC after it finishes. Then pull out the old drive and put the new drive in it's place, and it will boot to the copied drive.

My CD/DVD-ROM drive is acting up. It appears to load a CD, but then the "busy" light flashes continuously, and if I try to explore the drive, I get the message "drive is not accessible: retry/cancel." One message I received (can't remember how I got it) said the drive is locked by disk utility (or something like that).

Does it need cleaning? Is it toast? Help!

Hi -

i accidentally Locked myself out of a drive of my computer.
I am on windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit OS with NTFS File system.

Here is what i did:

Right click the Drive G: >> Properties
Security Tab: >>

I see 4 under Groups and User names.
Authenticated Users
SYSTEM
Administrators (CHETAN\Administrators)
Users (CHETAN\Users)

FYI (Chetan is the name of my computer.)

I clicked the last one... [Users (CHETAN\Users)]
Clicked the Edit button and Selected Deny for All of them.

and there we are... i even myself can't access the drive now.

Even after turning the hidden administrator account... i can't do it.

Thank you!

You could try running a System Restore and scroll down to Option Two, or booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly hitting the F8 key during Bootup and selecting Safe Mode, just chose the normal Safe Mode and if you can get logged in change everything back to Allow All..

If that doesn't work try doing this:

Repair Install

Clean Install Windows 7

My computer was shut down when the electricity went out a few nights ago. As the computer booted up in the morning, chkdsk ran. Windows Vista opened. I eventually discovered that "Access is denied" on one hard drive. I am, however, able to access the drive in Safe Mode.

How do I achieve access?

Thank you,

Jill Siegel

Is the drive the one with the operating system on it - or is it one used for storage?
If storage, it's a simple matter to take ownership of the contents of the drive:

Quote:

Taking Ownership - Vista:
Right click on the folder/drive that you want to take ownership of and select Properties
Click on the Security tab, then on the Advanced button
Then on the Owner tab, then on the Edit button
Click once on your account name, then put a checkmark in the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" Then click on OK.
Click OK on the warning dialog about reopening, then click on OK 2 more times to exit the dialog.
