Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

Q: Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

My computer freezes many times when ill start it up and get to desktop. It wont take any commands after starting and ill have to shut it down by turning power off. It seems that when ill start my computer in safe mode and then ill restart and go back to normal mode it works normally. All these began after 2 latest updates.

Preferred Solution: Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

tuplad89, Welcome to Seven Forums. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest, starting in normal mode. Hold down the windows key(the one with the flag on it) and push the "R" key. It will bring up a dialogue box. type msconfig in the box and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except your anti virus program, you will be prompted to reboot. Do so. Reboot even if not pompted. after reboot go back and make sure everything is still unchecked. See if you notice a difference in your issue.

Next press the start button and open an elevated command prompt ( Start-type cmd in the search boz, right click the cmd entry there and select run as administrator) In that window that appears type/copy-paste sfc /scannow If you decide to type it notice the space between the SFC and the /. If it says it found no integrity issues, type exit and let us know. If it says it found problems it couldn't fix, exit and restart the computer. Do the same thing again run scannow again. reboot. Keep doing that for 3 or 4 times until you get found no integrity violations. It is scanning system files looking for corrupted or missing files and trying to replace/repair them. It may take up to 3 times with reboots in between.

Please let us know the results of those things.

Hi,

My computer goes through the boot process, I put in the password, and just after I see the desktop, it freezes. Most of the desktop icons remain white. The hard drive is sounding like it's still active and the HD light continues to flash. It will start in safe mode, though.

I've tried to restore it And ran a virus scan. I've tried re-seating the memory and video card. I don't have any "spare parts" to try and swap out nor do I have the budget (6 kids) to just buy other parts to "hopefully" fix it, and like all of you, I really need this running asap.

Any help or suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

I would also like to see what the PSU is putting out too but if the machine is not running past that Window then can you measure the volts on the 24 pin with a digital multimeter - they are not expensive and let us know what the different coloured cables produce.
You just need to put the black lead into any black cabled pin on that socket and then just test the rest ie red , yellow and orange to find the volts. There is one cable that is grey (pin 8) I am interested in what that reads.
See this ATX 24 pin power supply connector pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru just make sure you ground any static electricity from yourself before you touch anything inside the case ie touch a water tap or suchlike.

Hello all,
I think my problems are of various nature and I start to think it might be hardware related but not too sure. Let me explain a bit about the history.

Around April this year it started, that my Windows 7 pro 64bit system, which was running fine for 2 years had it's hicups. When running Chrome or Skype it just started to freeze every now or then apps didn't run at all. I believed it's was an application issue, but in the end I wasn't able to fresh install Skype anymore so I ran a Malware check.
But no malware was found.

So I thought maybe the registry is so messed up that I might have to look into a fresh install. Also I thought that way I get a fresh clean system and remove old entries that just slow down my machine. I didn't mind doing a clean installation at this point.

I had various problems during the reinstall and ended up till now with roughly 8 reinstallations of my system. All went fine up to the point, when I had to update the netframework. At that point, the updates just failed.

With the latest reinstallation I just skipped the windows updates from 2012 alltogether and it ran fine for a while. Now I get again random freezes (black screen, like if the monitor just switches off) or on boot up it can't find the Desktop and tries to configure it for around 5 minutes.

I ran malware checks, used ccCleaner and avast. Everything looks fine. I also ran the svc check that I found somewhere to do, but wasn't sure how o interpret the data.

I now ... Read more

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt Drive map and listings, using the Snipping TOol in Start Menu. We can see if its configured correctly from that.

Then start working through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If you withheld installing all Windows Updates after a reinstall then you are not running Win7. YOu should install all Updates and run with Updates set to Automatic. The possibility of Updates messing up your PC is less than one in a million so there is something else wrong most likely.

I would look over these steps which spell out how to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as if you stick closely to them and use only the tools and methods within then you will be assured of having a perfect install. You can then backup a System image in case it becomes irreparable, used to reimage the HD or its replacement in 20 minutes.

Installs should also always be done with only the target HD plugged in, to avoid interference from other HD's. This alone could be a problem which we should be able to see from the screenshot.

I have been playing with this problem for a while now. I bought a USB IEEE combo PCI card. 6 x 4 . When i first got it and installed all seemed ok. Everything I hooked up to it all worked great. Didnt think much about it. But when I went to shut-down the puter. It goes through everything, says shut down good, but then restarts. I thought, odd. After trying for a few days checking settings and stuff, nothing seemed to help. Started getting good at timing during shut-down to push and hold the power button to shut off at the right time. That became very annoying after a week. So i started going backwards in un-installing stuff to maybe find the problem. Un-installed a couple programs. Nothing. Then I took out this card and poof. worked like it should. So I left it out for 2 weeks. Did my normall computing thing. No problems. Ok, I decided to try the card again. Put it back in and poof went back to not shuting down. That was before I found this site. Have had it out for a couple months. But since allmost everything anymore is USB, and my MB only has 2 USB, It sucks. I got a Printer,Palm,Cam,APC Back-up, that all use USB. Changing them around for what ever I need to use just bits. I need to see if I can get this card to work.

I dont have the card installed now. Thought Id see if I could get a few tricks or something to try first. Not sure on the spec of the card. But the chip says ALi. I can list everything else if it might help. Printed on the board ISB2.0&IEEE1394a 420ALIM... Read more

On the assumption nothing strange is going on i.e. the PC has become faulty, go into the control panel under power options and check everything is set to what you want it to be. If all seems OK may be a good idea to run a good malware program in case you have picked up something - MalwareBytes is a good start.

Does this happen in safe mode?
Have you installed any new software and or hardware lately?
Have you updated any drivers lately?

Post your exact system specs ie make and model of motherboard, brand, speed, and qty of ram, make, model, and wattage of pw supply, etc.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop, it's a few years old. I'm on Windows 7. The problem I'm having is that the computer will be running fine, and suddenly the computer will begin to start and stop, running so slow that I have to reboot. I can see in the Task Manager that the CPU usage fluctuates between 0% and a normal level. All other indications of the computer 'working' - the processing light on the keyboard, the movement of the mouse, the sound of the computer working - all start and stop in sync. It's like the whole system freezes every half second and then unfreezes again. After rebooting it goes back to normal.

The problem started back in March. At first it happened several times in one week. Then it seemed to go away for a while, and now it's been happening somewhat frequently again (two days in a row just now). I can't think of anything I did back in March that would have caused it, nor can I think of a pattern of what actions trigger it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I would like to start off by my PC's specifications, I have a HP Mini 210-3002SA notebook, originally it had a 250GB Hard drive and a 1GB RAM, Windows 7 Started OS, my previous hard drive got corrupt and stopped working so I purchased a new 1TB hard drive in which the windows 7 starter was installed by a technician and I had upgraded the RAM to a 2GB . My PC was working fine until recently it kept coming up with an error for a missing Conduit BackgroundContainer.DLL file every time I started the PC, so I downloaded auto run from Microsoft website and had deleted the missing DLL file and checked the PC for viruses and there was one virus from Bettersurf and my antivirus software removed it. I started my PC again and it starts up fine but it freezes when I open any applications, SafeMode will not let me run the antivirus with or without networking and I have no idea what's happening. I uninstalled recently downloaded programs which were MS Visual Basic and Team Viewer before deleting the entire conduit file using auto run. So please please please help me... I appreciate your efforts and your help ...

PS. Since the new hard drive had only the window 7 OS installed, I had installed all the necessary software drivers that originally came installed in the PC from the HP Website using a USB for transferring the drivers from one PC to another until Wi-Fi was enabled. Does it happens only when running the VMs?
If so, maybe you're allocating too much resources for the virtual machine, not leaving enough for the real thing to run. Check the memory settings and how many cores you've assigned. At most, give the VM 2GB RAM, possibly less, and a single core to test.

It could be almost anything, hardware or software, depending on what you have installed.

You do mention Chrome. It's been a memory hog for awhile, but more importantly, check your Chrome add-ons. Many times they are the real culprit.

Here's a bunch of sites that have suggestions on helping with Chrome's memory usage.

chrome memory hog 2014 - Bing

By the way, have you run your system and only used IE or another browser instead of Chrome? That way you could see if Chrome is the culprit.

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

My PC was given to me as a gift, but I was given it used from the previous owner and later found out it was refurbished. It is a Gateway NV53A. I have always had issues with BSOD's and Windows errors, and most of them either driver or memory related. I fixed and updated all drivers, but never did anything about memory except maybe some tests and they all came out fine. 3 days ago, I was using my PC just browsing a Web page and suddenly the screen went black. I thought it was the lcd, but I closed the lid to see if it would go into standby mode and it just stood there powered on and frozen... The only way it would react was if I manually turned it off holding power button. Sometimes it does boot up, sometimes it gets farther than others. What I mean is, sometimes it gets past the Gateway logo and crashes there, sometimes it boots up to to the home screen, and sometimes it doesn't even boot... How far it gets depends on how long the PC has been turned off. Odd I know... Anyways, I found out my motherboard requires ram with 1066mhz fsb whereas the current ram sticks it has installed are 800mhz.... I was told new ram with 1066mhz would fix my issues and allow my PC tu boot and run fine as it always did, but I just wanted to be sure that's my Issue, and I also wanted to know how come the computer ran fine (with the exception of BSOD's and some errors occurring every now and then) before and now suddenly I'm screwed. A:Computer starts, boots up and freezes at black screen

There is no issue in running slower (800mhz) RAM in a system that can run the faster (1066mhz) RAM. This, alone, will not cause this kind of problem. You got bad advice.

Do you know if this was the original RAM that came with the laptop? (Not very important but good info if you know)

It is possible that the RAM is defective, or the wrong specs for that laptop, or the two sticks have mis-matched specs, but if you ran a memory tester like Memtest86+ then any problems would have shown up there.

Your symptoms sound more like a power problem. At least that is where I would start. One thing you could try as a test is to remove the battery and run the laptop on just the power supply. Let's see if that changes anything.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this issue, but I have no idea if it's a hardware, software, or other issue entirely.

It started doing this today; so far I can't nail down a pattern as to what causes it. It was turned on this morning and had been on but not used for about four hours before my wife got on. She used it for maybe 15 minutes, and then it started glitching and freezing up. The mouse became unresponsive in fits, then eventually the system froze entirely.

She rebooted and ran a full virus scan, but it came up with nothing. It also had frozen again by the time the virus scan was finished, so I had to reboot it again. I was able to use it for maybe 20 minutes or so before I experienced the same glitching and freezing. I rebooted it once more, and now I'm writing this post.

The only common denominator I can think of so far is that we were both using an internet browser when it glitched. She was able to close the browser and continue working on the document she had open for a short time before it froze entirely. When I encountered the issue, it froze too quickly for me to do anything.

Thanks for your help!

Try this and make sure none of your system files aren't corrupt.
Hope that helps.

Hello. So my computer just randomly freezes at times. It makes a loud crashing sound and the keyboard and mouse doesn't respond at all. It's also does without the sounds sometimes.
I'm on a WinXP Home SP3 Dell Vostro 1500, 2GB Ram.
This usually happens when using an resource heavy applications such as Firefox and my PC Games. It also happens when I use Microsoft word.
I gotten to a point when I uninstalled all my games, bluetooth software, and other applications I haven't used in a while. I ran an AVG scan, Spybot Search & Destroy scan, and a Malwarebytes Scan. None of the scans have found anything. I also have used CCleaner in the past.
So I'm in dire need of help to find what's wrong with my computer.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes. To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.Check in all the categories. If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem. How To Use the Event Viewer

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

A:Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

My computer is an e-machines and is about a year old and for the past maybe 6 months ill turn it on and all the fans start up but the processor fan stops and then it wont boot up. Normally i just keep turning it on and off and it will eventually rev up really high and then slow down and then be fine adn work ok. Now its not doing anything, Just over and over turns on and then turns off while both other fans stay running. Power supply seems to be working properly. Doesnt make any noise and i have power everywhere. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like the CPU fan is dead. Replace it. In my area a new CPU fan is $20-30.

Hi all,
This is my first post on bleepingcomputer, so sorry if I am breaking any rules with this post in any way.

I have a weird problem with my machine (an ASUS g55v laptop, running Windows 7). A few days ago, it kept freezing after certain periods of use, or if I used too many programs at once, so I took it to my university's IT services. They tested the hard drive and said it wasn't failing, and Malwarebytes, Avast, and McAfee weren't finding any viruses or malware, so we went ahead and reformatted it.

After the reformat, things were working okay, until I installed a few programs. I installed a few things I used to use typically before the reformat, including:

VLC Media player
Spotify
Google Drive
iTunes
Steam
qbittorrent
Avast Antivirus
Malwarebytes
Java 8 updater
Dropbox
WinRAR
Skype

(note: the university automatically installed a few programs as well, such as Microsoft Office, McAfee, and a few other programs that didn't seem to be causing problems)

After installing all those programs (using Ninite--is that a problem?), my computer started to exhibit the exact same problem as before. It would lock up after too much use, OR, if I shut down before it locked up, it would remain frozen at the shutting down screen until I cut the power.

I have since used System Restore to return to the point before I had installed anything, and it's working perfectly. Since then, I've installed Google Drive, Malwarebytes, and ... Read more

Hello amateurhistorian , how do you format your PC ...what do you do first?.. I belive you skipped few important steps like disconnect lan cable from PC ... reboot  from  CD/DVD  till you see Windows menu.. with UPGRADE AND ADVANCED CUSTOM settings ... after that you enter the submenu with pc partitions ... so you select C: one and you press Format button several times to be sure you killed all bugs ...after that you let install windows new files... after process is over you activate windows and install a firewall&antivirus is a MUST.... torrent software will reinfect your pc and also sneaky software you might consider safe...

I have had to repeatedly force shutdown by holding the power button down. Also, on 1 of my 4 user account, it will connect to the internet fine, but will not display webpages. Here are my logs.

My computer is more than four years old. Every three or four months it will display its little but annoying quirk. It loads Windows normally, but then freezes, i.e. it can't seem to load some of the start-up programs fully. It happened this morning again. I tried shutting it down via the Start Menu, but it didn't respond. So I brutally pressed the switch. That's what I always do when it displays that quirk. On rebooting it, it never complains - no scandisk, no protest, no notification - nothing. Just runs like nothing ever happened. Now I read that cutting the computer from the power by simply pressing the switch can lead to file and data corruption. Is there a way to turn off the computer safely even if the normal way of shutting it down doesn't work? Or am I forced to be "brutal"?

Hello,
This problem started on december 31st after i installed an adblock software because youtube was starting to roll out 5 - 6 advertisements per video on 5:00 - 10;00 min videos
Anyways
I installed the program and it worked fine for the first week but afterwords i noticed my computer was becoming ABNORMALLY slow so i uninstalled the program from my computer and any programs that were recently added
However the issue persisted and slowly became worse to the point that it now freezes whenever using certain games
When not using games / Steam it does not have any issues and will run perfectly but did not have this issue in the past
Also when computer is shutdown 100% of time it will ask to check drive and will proceed to repair it
So i thought okay i'll just "Format" my computer and i'll see if that helps
So the format was working fine until 99% where it decided to display this message
"Undoing changes"
it now does this 100% of the time once the count goes to 50% so i've given up on trying to format my computer
Next i tried defragging and disabling programs that were taking high CPU but this hasnt had any effect to my knowledge
Am considering buying a new computer because im thinking its the graphics card or motherboard having issues
am using
ACER ASPIRE 3
A315-21-616E
AMD DUAL CORE PROCESSOR a6-9220 with turbo core tech
Have had this computer for two years would like to know if anyone else is having any issues or knows how to fix this issue... Read more
