Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 Fan Grinding Noise

Q: Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 Fan Grinding Noise

To start, I have seen the thread about a high pitched noise issue with this device's fan, and I don't think my problem is the same one. I have an ongoing issue with my Yoga 3 (full specs below), where for most of the time that the fan is spinning, it makes a loud grinding noise as if there's something stuck in the fan or the blade is off balance. I've only had the laptop for six months and it wasn't a problem when I bought it - it's developed since. The fan still seems to cool the laptop properly, and I've had no warnings from the device, but it's audible in quieter rooms and definitely isn't normal. I've installed the BIOS update that was recommended for a similar fan issue, and I've used OneKey Optimiser to run the fan cleaning tool several times - nothing has changed so far. I'm not sure what to do next. Should I attempt to open the machine and clean the fan unit with compressed air/investigate further, or should I contact someone about a repair? Thanks Aaron

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi aaroncawte ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As what you have already described , seems that you have done what is needed fro the fan noise issue.
Noting that the issue is mechanical in nature , please give tech support a call for the needed service .
No need to open the chassis for further steps not to invalidate the seal / warranty and have the tech run further check.

You can however run Lenovo Solution Center for the hardware test just to check on other parts that can also be affected and likewise temperature check at the moment of the noise for baseline data.

So now it also happened to me.  The grinding noise is definetly a mechanical one, the fan touches another part. You can change the sound by pushing onto the backside of the Yoga. Can anyone confirm that there are the same solutions like for other Yogas:- open the case and try to get the fan free- reduce the fan speed so the noise get softer- any other solution (apart from taking the axe...) Thanks for anyone's help, Dani

Hi, yestarday I was using my laptop with several opened applications and 1 hangouts video call active.Well, the CPU has decided to freeze at 0.5 GHz due to the generated heat. The laptop of course became unusable, so I closed everything and restarted the system. Once the reboot was completed I noticed that frequency was still at 0.5 GHz. Then I ran an Ubuntu live usb and I checked the CPU: again, still at 0.5GHz. I came back to Windows 10, I made a bit of research and I used ThrottleStop. I unticked the BD Prochot and then the laptop came back to life with frequency at 2.9 GHz (for the sake of precision it works even without turning on Throttle stop...you only need to launch the app and untick the prochot). Now, the problem is that I can use the laptop with all its capabilities only after I run Throttle stop. In all the other cases, even when I boot my laptop, frequency is at 0.5 GHz (and you understand it is working at low frequency because it lags a lot). Investigating a bit, I found that only motherboard replacement can fix this issue.....really? What do you think? Do you any kind of solution?

Hello, I have a Lenovo Yoga 3-1470 64-bit, which was originally windows 8. After updating to windows 10, the audio (Conexant HD Audio) starts to have some problems, such as the need to keep restarting my laptop to get the audio back. Recently it has gotten worse, hence I decided to uninstall the Conexant HD Audio driver from my device manager, with the hope that I can reinstall the updated windows 10 Conexant HD Audio driver. But after uninstalling, I found out that I cannot reinstall it back. The device driver installation wizard will only install for 2 - 3%, then a messagebox ERROR will appear stating that "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver." I have tried installing windows 8 and 10 versions of the Conexant HD Audio Drivers, but they do not work. Currently, my audio isn't working anymore. Can anyone help me, Thank you very much.

In this second post I am sharing the configuration to use with Notebook Fan Control software (probably some of you already know about this software if you hate the noise which fans of this laptop are able to do!). I added of course some considerations I noticed in preparing this config. Here we are... Yoga 3 1470 80JH using Windows 10 and NBFC 1.4.2.I appreciated a lot the work done by Mr. Cheeze but I found it incomplete, so I basically investigated the issue a bit more.I did not open the notebook but I found online that it is equipped with 2 fans. So, first step was adding the 2nd fan. Then I started to investigate if we can effectively control the fans and the answer is NO, but we can play a bit to force them to have a behavior. My target was only one: REDUCE the FANS NOISE and consequently their speed, because I think that this laptop is almost able to work in fanless mode (and believe me I stress it a lot, especially in terms of multitasking). Before showing my personal code to be used in NBFC I am giving you some information I retrieved by the Read&Write software (32bit version works well).?When Fans starts HEX values show up at position 6 and 254. These are the 2 actual speed values of the fans.?The target values (so where you have to write the desired fans speed) are in position 86 and 176. I am not totally sure if they are the effective position to write but they seem the only position which considerably vary according to the change of... Read more

Hi All - my laptop is approximately a year old and in relatively good condition. However, a few days ago a loud mechanical sound began coming from the right side of the laptop which I think must be coming from the fan but I'm really unsure. Any ideas on how to fix this issue or am I done for?

Hi all, I bought this bad boy back in July and have been thoroughly enjoying my experience with it (save for the screen issue discussed in another thread). I was fine with it since it seems to have gone away on its own and I couldn't afford to be without the machine for as long as it would take for them to fix it. The last few days I've been noticing near-constant fan noise. It picks up when I'm on Chrome or running some statistical computing software (R and Stata), but even without these applications running there is a noticeable amount of fan noise. Has anyone else experienced this issue? What have you done to remedy this? Thanks!

A:Lenovo Yoga 500-15IBD loud fan noise

Hi Nstant,  Most probably a program or App is running at the background cause fast spinning fan to cool down CPU temp.  To figure it out, right click in your taskbar and from the opened menu click on task manager.  -From top menu click on performance tab then click on resource monitor ==> from top menu click on CPU tab and look at to the Average CPU usage and see which App or Program is using a high percentage of your CPU capacity==> right click on it and end the process.  .Regards,  **If the issue has been resolved please, mark me as solution provided to help others find the solution easily and click the Kudos.**

A:Lenovo YOGA 720-15lKB Noise All the time

First, find out what's causing it. Chrome does have a nasty habit of consuming a lot of resources. That's less Chrome's fault than the website you're visiting. Bad code in, say, an ad window can give Chrome fits.

The other thing that causes fans to run is background programs. Windows Update and virus scanners consume a lot of resources. Thin computers.  If you launch Task Manager while the fan is loud, you can scroll down through the processes to see what's sucking up CPU resources.

However, the grinding noise that comes at the start is very loud and doesn't sound healthy at all. I've opened the case and there's no cords in the way of the fans. What could the noise be? Should i have concern? My computer runs fine after the noisy few seconds into the boot but becomes normal after it passes the windows XP logo.

Hi lag
Grinding noises aren't good. It sounds like you hard drive is going. I would back up your important data NOW. You can run a scandisk (surface scan) and defrag to help test out the hard drive. Many manufacturers of hard drive also have utilities on their web sites you can run to test out the drive. Is your system under warranty? Many hard drives come with a three year warranty.

A:Grinding noise?

You wouldn't be able to see anything. The grinding noise occurs when the ball bearings go ( at one point the balls start showing wear and don't run "round" anymore, causing the fanblades to tumble.)
Simple solution: you need a new fan. In cases of emergency (like you can't get your hands on a new fan anytime soon) there is a way to prolong the life of the fan a little bit. You get some graphite powder from your automotive supplier, peel back the fan label and carefully put a little bit onto the center of the fan.
I really mean CAREFUL the stuff is worse on cloth than laser toner
Make sure to put the label back on and don't use any form of oil..it will only cause a mess.

Hi, I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 530 with an AMD5 processor. I had to send the first one back because I got a BSOD twice. Something you would not expect from a modern laptop (I think), it sounds like an airplane is taking off. When it happens I'm usually working in microsoft office or just browsing (or both), and when I'm at the library studying it sounds so loud I'm scared it will disturb others lol.  Is there anything I can do to minimize the sound? I already looked around on the internet for tips but usually the descriptions of possible solutions are a bit complicated for me (I don't know a lot about laptops) and I'm also scared to mess up my laptop. Any tips woud be very helpful.  Kind regards, Mary

Hi.
Welcome to the forums.

Can you please post the full model number of you Thinkpad? Are you using Windows 10?

I have a TP Y 14 (20DM008UUS) with one of those ThinkPad In-Ear Headphones (57Y4488) (and Windows 10 64bits) and I don't apreciate any static sound while hearing music or videos.

How are you disabling the Nvidia drivers, from Windows Device Manager? Disabling the NVidia display adapter worked for you to remove the noise sound?

I always try to keep the Thinkpad Yogas driver up to date. Do you want to give it a try updating the Nvidia and the Realtek drivers?

Let me know your model number and we will check the support page for the latest drivers.

One of my HP laptops, HP Pavilion dv9650us, went off warranty about two months ago. I was using the machine to help fix another computer's problem when I noticed that its dvd-drive is making loud grinding noises and is slowing down the computer whenever I would access the drive. I suspect that the drive is about to die.

I am not sure how long the drive has been doing this since the laptop is being used primarily by another family member.

I purchased an extended warranty through Office Depot, but that family member cannot afford for that computer to be sent off for an unknown amount of time so I am actively considering replacing the drive myself.

I am looking at drives on amazon.com and unsure if a 'universal laptop slimline drive' will fit. Are the drives fairly universal between manufactorers? The current drive is an HD-DVD drive so I was hoping to upgrade to a blu-ray drive. Is it possible?

FYI: These kind of internal laptop dvd drives are not available from newegg or even frys. I'd rather not buy directly through hp.

www.span.com Found a few laptop BD-Roms there. Panasonic makes the UJ-220 for laptops as well. They are a bit pricey. I would google something like 'Notebook Internal Blu-Ray' and see what pops up for you.

Hey everyone. So recently, my computer made a scary grinding sound that was quite loud and after opening it up and inspecting it, it seemed to be coming from the hard drive. A few google searches suggested this was most likely the problem. As a side note, this only happened after having my computer turned off for two days and happened on boot-up.

I went out and bought a new hard drive and installed it, however when I turned my computer on (with my old drive still in it to clone) the sound was gone. Anyways, I cloned the drive and set my old drive as a new partition designated Z: to keep as extra storage since it seemed to be working alright. Then, today, (again, after having the computer off for a day) the noise began again and I got an error screen with the options "Run Windows Repair" and "Start Windows Normally" or something to that effect. I started windows normally, because since my old drive was empty this shouldn't have caused any issue. Windows started up as usual, but I tried loading chrome and it seemed to be loading quite slowly. Not wanting to further the issue I turned it off again and removed the old hard drive.

I turned it on once more, and to my dismay, the sound continued. It doesn't sound like it could be coming from anywhere but my hard drive, however I unplugged and removed my CD/DVD drive to rule that out, and the noise continued. The new hard drive is a different brand and size and this has me worried that it could be something ... Read more

My w550s laptop fan is making a loud grinding noise whenever I turn it on.  I've tried cleaning and then replacing the fan but the issue persists anyway. Any tips on how to resolve the issue would be greatly appreciated. I've attached the sound for reference. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4rjnLAA0hh8c0NBVWphbVlUMzQ/view?usp=drivesdk (it sounds like a bearing is loose but I'm not quite sure)

Welcome shadowsonmywall1. Is your CPU and GPU running hot when the laptop fan is making a loud grinding noise?2. Did you remove the thermal paste before replacing with a new fan?3. Have you tighten all other screws on the laptop fan?
4. Use grease to oil the bearing of the fan.

Title says it all. I am not very familiar with Computers, but I know my stuff.

I have an ASUS P5Q-E Motherboard, and an Intel Q9950 processor. I also have the Antec Twelve Hundred gaming case, with a Zalman cooler on top of all that.

I smack the side of the behind the cover, and sometimes it will go away, but that's horrible for the machine. It is not the cooler, because I have tried moving it while the PC was running, and no problem. I smack the top of the fan on the top, the muffles, and comes back. It is not the Hardrive, or any External fans, because the noise is coming from the top, back right corner of the PC. I turn the speed of the fan on the top down, there is no change of sound, and there are no wires interfering with the fans.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Our NEC Superscript 870 printer works ok for one or two pages at a time: anymore than that and it begins to make a grinding noise and then a paper jam. The grinding noise seems to be coming from the right hand side, perhaps from the gears under the brass clips that are under the toner cartridge. The teeth that are visible seem normal. Suggestions?
Steve

I put my headphones in the jack today and heard a weird background noise. When I removed them, the computer speakers were making a loud buzzing noise as well.  The buzzing noise comes and goes and disappears if I mute the computer's volume.  I cannot hear any audio on my computer now (no music, videos, noise at start up/shut down, etc.). I have tried updating the sound drivers and restarting the computer several times, but to no avail.  I have also tried to get sound with and without external speakers attached, with and without headphones in, etc. and I can only occassionally get the loud buzzing noise which is coming directly from both of the speaker vents on the bottom of the computer.  Thoughts on a solution?

My Lenovo YOGA 510-14AST (purchased a few weeks ago in August 2018, runs on Win 10) gives out very loud fan noise for 5-10 secs once initiating the smallest task (e.g. opening a pdf. or a new tab in Chrome). This problem happens more often when the laptop is charged. Probably caused by high CPU usage, which during standard browsing, sometimes rockets up to 85%. Strangely, when in task manager I add up the running programmes, it does not give me the indicated 85%, but usually around 40%. I tried various "small fixes" from the forum/internet, like lowering max processor state, getting rid of background apps. and installing all the (I think) Win 10 updates. None of it seems to help. Also, the battery lasts ( standard usage - browsing and win office) shorter than advertised. So, I am wondering if these are common problems of this seria or a hardware/ other problems, and if there are any solutions on how to solve the fan noise.  I am not so much of a tech-savvy, and had a budged for a cheap laptop only, so would be grateful for any help or advice.
