ThinkPad P52s RAM upgrade

Q: ThinkPad P52s RAM upgrade

I just got the P52s recently with 8gb Ram installed. I ordered Lenovo 8GB DDR4 2400MHz SoDIMM Memory to help with some Solidworks modeling. I tried to install the RAM and my laptop will power on but screen stays black. Any help or suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a ThinkPad P52s (20LB001BUS) 2 months ago and a few weeks ago decided to get a pen to do some simple work on my laptop... Lenovo sales person first suggested I can use Active Pen 2 with my laptop and I bought it from Lenovo Website. Eventhough it did connected to my laptop, didn't work at all. Lenovo technical support connected to my laptop and tried to figured it out but no hope so I returned it.  I contacted Lenovo customer service again and asked if there is another pen that is truly compatible with my machine and he suggested ThinkPad Pen Pro. Of course this one also failed to do the job with my machine.  Long story short, after a few long conversations with Lenovo sales people (including technical support), I understand Lenovo team cannot tell me whether this machine is compatible with a pen (either Lenovo or any other brand) or not. That must be a very not-funny joke and reality...  So I am hoping to hear someone's experience with P52s touchscreen and a pen (active or stylus whichever). It doesn't have to be Lenovo as long as it works with P52s.  CheersG

A:Any Stylus or Active Pen for ThinkPad P52s

Hi Gercek,

Welcome to the community forums.

We checked further and can see that the ThinkPad P52s (20LB001BUS) has a 10-point Multi-touch display capability. However, if the system does not come with a pen at the time of purchase (indicating the system includes the all-important digitizer), a pen will not work afterwards because the digitizer component is missing from the system?s display. You may check the full specifications here:http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P52s?MT=20LB

This morning after waking my ThinkPad P52s (Windows 10 x64) from sleep the following happened: 1. The "A Thunderbolt controller has experienced a problem and cannot connect to devices or other computers until new firmware is installed" dialog box popped up several times. However, it no longer shows up. I believe (after some googling) this means the controller went into "safe mode" for some reason and will only accept firmware updates now.2. Both USB-C ports stopped working properly (peripherals connected to either of those ports are not functioning). I was able to use those ports just fine few days ago.3. The 65W Lenovo power adapter is now detected as "15W USB-C power" instead of "AC power". This results in batteries charging only when power consumption does not exceed 15W (i.e. when laptop is powered off or idle). Most likely due to the same reason the following message is now shown during every reboot: "The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended model which was shipped with the system. To boot with the AC adapter, please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system. Press Esc to continue." Thunderbolt controller is enabled in BIOS. "Thunderbolt in BIOS Assist Mode" is disabled. It looks like Power Delivery is not being negotiated between the power adapter and the laptop due to (malfunctioning?) Thunderbolt controller. What I've tried so far:Plugging power adapter to both USB-C ports with the same result (see 3. above)U... Read more

Hi.  I'm hoping I can get this resolved on this forum.I just got my system and am trying to connect my 3 external monitors.    My setup is as follows:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 3 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - worksMonitor 4 - DP ou to DVI in via a DP-DVI adapter - doesn't work. I can't figure out how to make this work.I also tried this setup:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - VGA out to VGA in - worksMonitor 3 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 4 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - doesn't work. Incidentally in this configuration, when I closed the laptop screen this monitor worked.  Also on a related note, the Nvidia Quadro P500  is sitting idle as the Intel UHD 620 is doing all the work.  How can I control this? Thanks for any suggestions. Sal

A:Thinkpad P52S Ultra Dock and 3 External Monitors

As stayed in PSREF, P52s supports up to three independent displays. Laptop's screen includes in this limit, meaning you can use two external displays at that time. When you close the lid, you can use three external displays. To use more, you'll need some sort of USB adapter to increase such a limit. Regarding other question, you can't disable Intel GPU - it's always active and it's always controls screen output. NVIDIA's dGPU can be configured to be used in selected applications, making them to work with higher performance. P52 and P72 for sure have an ability to disable Intel iGPU, giving the control of screen output to dGPU. Probably P1 and/or X1 Extreme have the same feature too.

Hi everyone, I have a Thinkpad p52s hooked up to a newly bought ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W (40AN0135US). I recently also purched a second external monitor, and want to operate them through the dock now (with laptop closed)Both monitors are Dell U2518D, and they have a resolution of 2560 x 1440. However, the moment I plug in both monitors, one will only be available at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. What I've tried so far:updated Windows 10updated all p52s driversswitched cables from HDMI to mDPtried all four monitor plugs in the docktried another U2518D monitor (we have more at the office)My laptop screen is only HD so I can't compare it, but when I open the lid I simply have one more HD screen To no avail. One of the screens will always go back to a generic HD display with 30Hz. I'm no expert but I was convinced this shouldn't be a problem with the laptop and the dock? I have the Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver version 26.20.100.6951 installed. I don't know why nVidia does not have any settings about the monitors but again, I'm no expert, and I didn't find anyone else having the same problem. I attached screenshot to show how this monitor is being displayed.

I recently purchased the P52s and the Ultra Docking station.  I am dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu 18.04.  I have dual 27" monitors connected to my Ultra docking station, as well as ethernet and power.  The Ultra connects to my P52s via USB-B Type -> USB.  Inititally all was well, but after a week or so,  my Ubuntu stopped seeing the dual monitors, even though the ethernet from Ultra continues to be picked up.   In Ubuntu the "display" only shows the built in laptop display and I cannot force it to detect external monitors. I have updated all the Lenovo drivers via the Windows updaters.  Previous threads seemed focused on other Lenovo products and didn't help me here.

Has any other P52s owners had similar problems?

Hello,I have a T580 P52s 20LB with a 500GB HDD, a ThinkPad T580 P52s M.2 SSD tray and a 500GB M.2 Samsung EVO 970 Pro.  I also have an M.2 to USB-C adapter.  Samsung Magician will not detect the SSD using the adapter so I used a work-around to clone my HDD (all partitions) to my SSD.  Afterward, I installed the SSD using the M.2 SSD tray but I got the boot device not found error.  My tech tried and got the same results. A third tech tried and got the same results.  Even when I had the third tech wipe the M.2, install it and try to do a fresh Window 10 install, it did not work.  I know the drive is fine because it works in other machinces.  I got my SSD tray directly from Lenovo and confirmed before purchasing and after receiving it that it is the correct part. I know the machine is capable of supporting SATA or M.2 NVMe for drive 1 but I can't seem to get this to work.  I picked up a SATA EVO 860 in case help from this forum isn't able to solve the problem.

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

hello there,

I've tried to upgrade the RAM of my IBM ThinkPad R31 (Type 2656). It came with 128 and I've purchased 2 x 512. However the machine refuses to boot up with the new RAM. The 512 RAM's specs are:
144-pin unbuffered DIMM
Density: LOW
PC133 133FSB
2.5 Volts
6 Layer unbuffered
Non ECC
As far as I can tell from the R31 manual this RAM should work. Also, I visited crucial.com and my new RAM answers all their questions with regards to my machine.

The only difference between the 512 and 128 is height - the 128 is about 5mm higher. What does this mean in terms of the type of RAM it is?

If anyone could help out that would be great. Thanks,

A:Thinkpad 11e Ram Upgrade

Hello and welcome,

You don't indicate whether you have a 1st or 2nd generation 11e, or if it's Intel or AMD based.

Taking a guess that it's 2nd gen, here is the base spec:  http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool%5CSys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%2011e%20(2nd%20Gen)/ThinkPad_11e_2nd_Gen...

Intel models: 4GB or 8GB / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L,soldered to systemboard, no sockets
AMD models: 8GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L,one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket

If it's an AMD model that has a RAM socket, this is one of the available hardware maintenance manuals (there are several depending on MT-M - machinen type-model) that has instructions for accessing the memory slot:  (English) Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad 11e (Type 20D9, 20DA), Yoga 11e (Type 20D9, 20DA)

Knowing your exact MT-M would help to determine the exact specs and whether the RAM is replaceable.

I've removed the i5 processor in a couple of T510 and 520 laptops and installed i7-640M or i7-2640M processors. Recently I installed an i7-2960XM which performed nicely. One problem though. I had some suspicions that this may not be fully compatible as it may create too much heat. With this in mind after I installed this processor I closely monitored the temperature and found that most of the time it remained between 115 to 165 ...... until I began loading down applications. The temp would soar up to near 200 degrees but would dwell shortly in the 175 range then drop down to 160 or 140.  Since then I've removed this cpu and will most likely go with the i7-2640M. The big question is wold the much faster i7-2960XM be compatible? I'm not fully convinced the program (Advanced System Care) is correctly monitoring the temperature. However I dare not risk damaging my system if this system is overheating. The performance increase of the faster cpu is very significant. Do I dare risk going faster?

I'm in the same boat and I found this: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/helix_hmm_en_0c10337.pdf It certainly looks doable I don't see any mention of glu/special too etc. I'm gonna wait for a month or so before ordering - I bet someone will take one apart by then:-)

A:Thinkpad X1 Extreme Upgrade

Good day.

Please see page 51 of the HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1p1_x1_extreme_hmm_en.pdf

Memory modules and SSDs are listed as CRUs. Looks like only the bottom cover needs to be removed to access them.

Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

Hello, I have a Lenovo X301 and I love with all my heart. I've just recently upgraded my SSD and RAM. Read a lot of material about upgrading this model and found some rumors from 2009 that it should support SL9600 and SP9600 CPU's. I've consulted with Intel and they suggested I should contact Lenovo support to clarify whether there is a BIOS support for these CPU's because both SL9600 and SP9600 fit the socket (BGA956). So is there a BIOS that supports these CPU's for X301?I have read some korean forums and some people have successfully upgraded X301 to SP9600, yet it is unclear if they made any software/hardware modifications beforehand to make that possible. This is not a rational but sentimental decision, I know it is not worth the money. SU9600 is an official option, but it is such a minor upgrade I would not bother. Thank you in advance  Offtopic - after I installed Lenovo service bridge on my thinkpad, I am getting an internal server error every time I try to go to lenovo support page. Several people have reported this too, since Nov 30, 2016. Someone should look into that code

Hey guys I want to update my laptop RAM Lenovo ThinkPad X 201 3680PW9  to. But I will have ordered via the Internet so it would be almost impossible to be retained or invoiced if it does not work. I want to know what is the best option to upgrade the RAM 8 GB (2X4GB) or 12 GB (1X4GB+1X8GB)?What is the best RAM brand compatible with this model ? Thanks alot

A:want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

Max supported by this serie is 2x 4GB RAM, a 8GB module will not work.

You'd need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) or DDR-10600 (DDR3-1333). DDR3-12800 will most probably not work (I never managed to get one working in mines)

Stick to well known brands like:

Samsung
Elpida
Kingston (but avoid the "Value RAM" series)
Hynix
Crucial
Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" series)
A-Data

Hello Everyone, I have recently upgraded my CPU to:  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz I have : Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 graphic card I also have  a 16 GB of RAMI am under Windows 10. So my problem is that my heatsink won't stop turning and sometimes it's quite loud, I do record music sometimes nd all this noise doesn't really make things for me in post-production.   I was wondering if you have any idea to why that is happening, someone told me that I sould change my heat sink, but there is lots of them and I can't find the right one, Should I get me a new one or does an old one wil do too?  I will appreciate any help.   Thanks in advance.

I have the Thinkpad 11e w. I've heard you can't ruograde the ram from 4gb go a 8gb bc it's soldered to the motherboard. Then I read several post saying there's 1 socket available. Is the CPU upgradable bc I read it's soldered as well. Thanks for any input.
