Preferred Solution: Volumine Shadow Copy Service error ID 8194 in the Event Viewer, Windows 8.1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I continue to receive the VSS error Event ID 32 and 8193. When this happens, my computer freezes then goes to blue screen where I see IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL along with other information. There is no pattern when this happens. It is extremely random.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit Service Pack 1. I am also running a 3rd party backup, Carbonite. Please let me know if more information on my system will help. I do not recall having this problem prior to service pack 1.

Here is my question:  I used the MiniTool Partition Wizard program to partition my hard drive into a Windows drive (C:) and a Data drive (J:).  When I look at the System Restore Protection Settings in Control Panel, it says that protection is "ON" for both drives.  How do I determine which drive is having the problem?  I'm guessing it's the C: drive, but I can't figure out how to determine which drive corresponds with the alphanumeric string listed in the error code.

I found this Microsoft help page:  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8029af8b-d3df-4093-80b8-938b10d6babd.aspx

Should I run the solution on both drives, or only the C: drive?

I'm currently running Win7 Home Premium with SP1 - 64-bit - all Windows updates are current.  Win10 is preparing itself to upgrade, and I wanted to get this error corrected beforehand.

Well...the Windows partition files...are the concern here, I think.

But it's simple enough to check on both partitions...one will be C:, one will be J:.  It's probably wise to check both, IMO.

VSS is important when it comes to backing up the system.

Hi, all. I have been trying to figure out a serious of issues that my PC has been having. It's possible they were caused by poorly seated RAM, but the RAM seems to check out now. There is a whole slew of details on the case here: TechNet with a lot more information that will be of help, including posted evtx files. I have always gotten great help here, though, and am in dire need of a second opinion, so I thought I would check with this forum's experts.Here is the basic gist, although there is a ton more detail on the other link:Since building this machine, I've had frequent BSODs, often seemingly-related to middle of the night MSE updates, or possibly other windows updates. These always required a System Restore to recover from, as Windows was unbootable. Often it said the Restore failed, but it seemed to resolved the bootability issue at least.I have removed MSE and reseated some RAM that initially tested poorly, but which now seems to be passing MemTest no problem.I still have a series of issues that occur, and the one that was causing noticeable issues was SuperFetch causing sysmain.dll to fault (Event 1000, posted below) on every boot and periodically throughout the day. I have disabled SuperFetch, which stopped the issue from happening every boot, but it still happens occasionally, so it seems SuperFetch is but one trigger.The other most common error I have is Event 55 (posted below), possibly related to Windows Backup and/or System Restore, which seems ... Just writing an update to say I managed to solve the problem by turning off my AV completely before starting the service and it worked (I obviously changed it back to manual once it started)!

Annoyingly, I had actually already tried this before by turning off individual components of my AV at a time (eg firewall), but for some reason had overlooked trying to turn the whole thing off...

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea what in the AV (KIS 2015) would be blocking VSS from starting suddenly (I haven't changed any of its settings from before the issue arose)?

Greetings,

I am just trying to hammer out the issues I find in event viewer. Here is one of them:

Event ID: 3095
This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

I am, indeed, a part of a workgroup and NOT a domain. What could the Netlogon service do for me as apart of a workgroup as opposed to a domain?
This took place while I was sitting in front of the computer but I have no idea what would cause this error. Any ideas?

A:Event Viewer - Netlogon service error

It may be configured to start automatically in Services, and can't start and complains. If it is not running and you have no problems, then just keep it from trying to start in the first place.

Go to Start, Run, services.msc and scroll down to the Net Logon service, right click, Properties, set Startup type to manual or disabled, OK.

how can i specify the path?

A:HELP need to solve this problem asap - Unable to start event viewer/event log service

Fire up regedit and find this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

With "Eventlog" highlighted on the left pane, you should be able to see a value called "ImagePath" on the right. ImagePath should be equal to this:

%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted

If you can't see "ImagePath" in that location, or if it's not set to the text above, that's almost certainly your problem. If you're in the habit of using "registry cleaners", that might be the cause.

Hiya

Shadow Copy Restore is a component of the intelligent file storage technologies in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. It enables you to prevent data loss by creating and storing shadow copies of files and folders on your network at predetermined time intervals.

Before a client computer can access shadow copies, you must install the Shadow Copy Client. The operating systems that require the Shadow Copy Client include:

Windows XP
Windows 2000 (SP3 and higher)
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Windows XP

Windows Installer : To install this msi package you need Windows Installer
2.0 or higher. You can download it from one of the following locations:
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 98 SE

Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 2000

TL;DR: I got a scam call from Dell's "concierge" number (1-877-790-3355). The caller had several pieces of personal information, including my name and service tag, and details of my recent system servicing. He said Dell had been notified that my computer was downloading malware, and got me to open the Windows Event Viewer, showing me the errors in my administrative events folder. He told me to delete these, which was when my suspicion finally got the better of me and I hung up. He called back, first on the same number, then on another one that appeared on caller ID as "Global Pacemind" (Everett, WA, USA - 1-425-609-3257). I told him that I didn't have time right now (I wasn't yet 100% sure this was a scam, but didn't like where it was going), and he said that he'd call back.

The registry value you'd want to check is ImagePath. In your case it seems to point to something that's not being found, or the ImagePath value doesn't exist at all.

======================================

The "description" is just a text string. It's saying "use string index 101 from vssvc.exe in the 'description' field for this service". On my box, which is English Windows, that maps to:

"Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup ... blah blah"

On yours, the description string embedded in vssvc.exe may be different if it's a Slovenian version.

Try clicking on the start button, type services.msc in the search box and hit enter. Click on standard at the bottom of the window and scroll almost
all the way down until you reach Volume Shadow Copy. It should be set as Automatic. If it is set as Manual highlight the area and right click on it.
Select Properties. In the drop down menu, select Automatic. Click on Start Service. When it has restarted the VSS, select Apply and Okay. If this
fixed the problem it would be a good idea to create a System Restore point immediately.

Under "services"....."volume shadow copy service".....then "properties"..... the Sratup type" is set to "Manual".
Is this the correct setting or should it be set to "automatic" ?

thank you

A:Volume Shadow Copy Service setting

I believe that it should be set to manual if you have system restore enabled.

There is a widely reported problem of some jpg files displaying thumbnails which cannot be opened and reported to be unrecognised or corrupt while other jpg files open normally. I think this problem may also relate to other types of files.

**

I have experienced this widely reported problem of image files (not all) being reported as corrupt or unable to be opened by various programs. Why some and not all? I tried so many methods to recover my images by following numerous suggestions from so many forums. None worked. Copying the so-called corrupt files to another disc and trying to open them on another computer didn't work either.

Then, I had a sneaky thought that it may have something to do with Shadow Copy services. Previously, I had tried to backup my computer, during which the process creates a shadow copy of the files to be backed-up, but the backup failed. I retried the process, but the backup failed again and reported an error while trying to read the shadow copy.

I checked the number of shadow copies on my hard disc of which there were about 6. I decided to clean up the hard disc using System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > More Options > System Restore and Shadow Copies > Clean up > Delete > OK > Delete Files.

Voilà !!!

All images reappeared.

Does the Volume Shadow Copy Service that comes with Windows Server 2003 only start and come in to the running state in service control when it is actually taking a snapshot?

I have been googling and reading articles but they tend to all just tell me the basics of how to use it or the architecture of it, and I've been unable to find the answer to my question, so I was hoping that someone could share their wisdom on this with me.

Is has been my observation that both services "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" and "Volume Shadow Copy" both come in the Manual Startup Type by default in services. This would seem to support that they do not run all the time to watch things, but only when taking a snapshot?

Can anyone shed more light on this?

in doing so i noticed alot of "Storage Volume Shadow copies"

they contain many hidden "Generic Volume Shadow Copy"

i trust a site called "Herd Protect" to verify files are legit sometimes.

so i checked vssvc.exe

For some time I am having the problem on Win 7 of not being able to set a restore point. The message that displays is likely familiar to this forum.

It is the Volume Shadow Copy service error followed by a long error code number.

Some process is blocking the ability to set restore. What the error message suggests to turn off processes hasn't worked or I'm not doing it right.

Please advise.

My suspicion is that I made some selection error in setup but
have no idea what could have happened.

Also I have not seen the Application Even log or where to find it. There is a standard number on it:

I am not able to make backup, I get message not enough free space for shadow copy? How do I resolve this? I understand some kind of USN journal is created on
System reserved partion. This hidden partition was created when I installed and now I have only 38Mb free out of 100Mb. As I understand this has been an Issue for more than a year, and still Microsoft has not resolved?

A:Windows 7 image backup, error not enough space for shadow copy

I've had that error a few times. I think I tied the times of when it happens to installing new software, perhaps an upgrade of security software ..but that isn't certain. I have never found a definite resolution for the problem but after looking at the partition in Disk Management, scratching my head and rebooting a few times, the percentage of free space has just magically increased. Then the disk imaging procedure works OK.

I have read that this partition can be merged with the C: Drive and if installing the system afresh, the same can be done. However, just as I start considering this, the problem has thankfully gone away.

A:Vss writers problem event id 8194

More detailed info:

We use COM elevation Moniker to elevate privilege when UAC is enable, codes are as following:

// Don't elevate if were already running as administrator
if(IsUserAnAdmin())
{
hr = CoCreateInstance(rclsid, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, riid, ppv);

// If we fail, lets try creating elevated instead of just failing
if(SUCCEEDED(hr))
return hr;
}

StringFromGUID2(rclsid, wszCLSID, cntof(wszCLSID));
hr = StringCchPrintfW( wszMonikerName,
cntof(wszMonikerName),
L"Elevation:Administrator!new:%s",
wszCLSID);
if (FAILED(hr))
return hr;

memset(&bo, 0, sizeof(bo));
bo.cbStruct = sizeof(bo);
bo.hwnd = hwnd;
bo.dwClassContext = CLSCTX_LOCAL_SERVER ;
HRESULT res = CoGetObject(wszMonikerName, &bo, riid, ppv);
If not run the app as administrator, the error would occur.
But if run the app as administrator, the error would not appear.

And i have checked the difference between CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER and CLSCTX_LOCAL_SERVER, and it seems that is the cause of this issue.
But how to solve it?

Thanks

The above error message shows up shortly after bootup.
Other symptoms are System Restore and Backup and Restore fail. When manually creating a System Restore Point, the failure message is:  “The restore point could not be created for the following reason:  The Remote Procedure Call failed  0x800706BE”.

Also, two windows updates fail to install, even when attempted separately, they are:  KB2957689 and KB2808679 with an error code of “8E5E03FA Windows encountered unknown errors”.

What I have done so far:

In Services, I checked “Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider”. It was stopped and set to Manual. I set it to Automatic and Started. I did the same for “Volume Shadow Copy”. In this case, the service started but stopped with the same above error after about 10 seconds. The dependencies for both services are the same:  “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” and “DCOM Server Process Launcher”. I checked both and found them set to Automatic and were already Started.

In Msconfig, I found nothing unchecked in Startup or Services.

At the command prompt I performed “sfc /scannow”. It produced a report indicating it found errors but I do not know how to read the file. I have the almost 3MB CBS.log file available. There is a possibility it could not correct all errors.

I use Paragon Backup version 10.2 in Windows 7 premium 64 bit to backup to an external USB Hard Drive. Backup used to work fine but now the backups fail halfway through. I've traced the problem through the Event viewer to be caused by:
"Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state"

How do I prevent the Volume Shadow Copy service from entering the stopped state during a backup?
Thanks.

P.S. The error message during Paragon's backup is
Backup [virtual] succeeded

Backup [committed] failed
VSS: Can't read volume data
Error code 0x 12016

When I switched Paragon to use its own hot processing instead of Window's the error message became:

"Backup [virtual] succeeded

Backup [committed] failed
VSS: Can't read volume data
Error source: Hard disk manager
Error code 0x 12016"

Hey all,
I am having an issue with a user connected to our local domain. Whenever they try to log in, it keeps displaying "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service." I have tried multiple ways of addressing it and have
had no luck with a fix for this. I have tried:

Using 'netsh winsock reset'Uninstall and reinstall network adapter driversClean booting and trying to isolate the issue (did not find anything)
Deleting the font cache Tinkering with the service settings Disabling anti-virus and restarting
System Restore
None of these are fixing the issue for my particular system. It always comes back. The hardest part about troubleshooting this issue is how sporadic it is. It happens every other time the user logs in.

The only other fix I have not tried the hotfix they released for this yet. I don't want to install this until I have exhausted all of my options as this could create more problems.
We have 50+ other computers running Windows 7 on this domain with absolutely 0 issues. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

hi all,

i always check my boot time from event manager following this pattern:

Event viewer -> Applications and Services log -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Diagnostic Performance -> Operational

off late, i have noticed under Microsoft i get another entry along with Windows. it is IEResp. this was not present earlier.

further under Diagnostic Performance, there was only operational but now there are two more entries i.e Diagnostic and Diagnostic -loopback.

i have observed that my booting time has also gone up.

are these entries valid? why have they turned up? is it ok to keep them or is there any thing i need to do since these entries have turned up.

kindly drop ur views.

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor"AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003.
