Need to delete many duplicate virtual network adapters

Q: Need to delete many duplicate virtual network adapters

I have over 50 virtual networking adapters in device manager, I have posted this question in many forums, and still cannot get rid of these pesky unused extra adapters. I know they have been created by using Virtualbox, and by creating many virtual machines and updating virtualbox. Unfortunately, I have tried uninstalling virtualbox and the drivers all remain in devicemanager. DeviceMgmt also does not allow me to uninstall or delete the adapters, (When I do they just stay there, even after rebooting.)

I most likely have to go into the registry and delete them, but they are in so many different places there, I need to know the correct place to delete them.

I have a bet that this is the forum where I will get the answer for this even though I have posted in virtualbox forums, technet, MSDN, superuser, serverfault, and stackoverflow.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm having trouble with virtual network adapters not displaying under network connections (WinXP PRO SP3).

Specifically, I'm trying Hexago Virtual Multi-Tunnel Adapter and Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

They display under device manager, and Microsoft Loopback Adapter displays under IPCONFIG but does not obtain an ip address (it gets a 169.x.x.x address). I have DHCP enabled on my router. Hexago Virutal Multi-Tunnel Adapter only displays under IPCONFIG as

Usually just going into Device Manager then to network adaptors, right clicking and disabling the unused virtual adaptors works for this.

Hello

Before i begin some things i'd like to note;
I don't do file or printer sharing etcIPv6 has always been disabled on my wireless adapter, I felt no need for it and never had any issues (please correct me if I'm wrong).

As you can see from the image below I have multiple network adapters.

The 2 Realtek adapters are my Ethernet & Wireless adapters so those are fine, but what on earth are all the other ones? I'm pretty worried so can anyone feel me in.

===================================================================
Update

From the image below you can see they show up under ipconfig too, I don't want them on my computer so how do i go about removing them?
Note: LAN 2 & 4 are related to the microsoft virtual adapter we saw in the photo above. (no clue what that is/does).

The white boxes were just a precaution. I'm not very good with computers so it might be pointless, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I also went to network connections in control panel and it only shows my Ethernet and my wireless adapter, nothing else shows so I'm not sure why all these adapters are showing up on device manager.
Thanks in advance.

A:Can I delete all these extra Network Adapters?

Those are IPv6 Virtual adapters that are "Hidden". They are added when IPv6 is enabled on any network connection. Removing them, can cause issues when trying to connect to websites that only use IPv6.

I have a minor problem that bothers me. I am running Windows 7 Professional. The name of my wireless network is "dd-wrt," but when I am connected it says I am connected to "dd-wrt 2." Obviously, the computer remembers connecting to dd-wrt in the past, but something has changed since then (maybe the password?), so it has had to name the new connection "dd-wrt 2." I can't find where I can get rid of the original dd-wrt, so it will not let me rename the "dd-wrt 2" to just "dd-wrt"

Also, I have a similar problem with my network connection. In the network connections list, it lists my Ethernet connection, bluetooth connection, and wireless connection 3. If I try to rename the "wireless connection 3" to just wireless connection, it says it cannot be renamed because that name already exist. This connection is not listed anywhere I can find, even when doing a search. How can I find the "Wireless Connection" and "Wireless Connection 2" so I can delete them and rename my "Wireless Connection 3?"

Thanks!

A:Delete Old Network Adapters/SSID Names

Go to Network and Sharing Center then look upper left side and choose "manage wireless connections" you can rename or adjust the SSID for each wireless connection there.

You can get rid of the extra wireless adaptors by going into Control Panel>Device Manager, go to "view" then choose "show hidden devices" after that go to network adaptors and you should be able to delate any extra network adaptor entries.

Hi everyone,

We are having a problem here that I have never encountered before. We have a few workstations that have the same entry for the display adapter installed twice. When you click on the one that is listed first and try to disable it or delete it you get a message that says that you can not perform that operation because the device is being deleted. If you remove or disable the one that is listed second whenever you restart the computer it comes right back.

The reason this was brought to my attention is because the users who have this happening have to reset their display settings (screen resolution) every day.

When I go into Safe Mode and look at the device manager there is only one display adapter listed. When I remove it their and restart the computer and log in normally. They are both back with the same scenario I explained earlier.

Hi everyone,
I know that my title sounds very odd but this seems to be my problem. Firstly, I cant connect to the internet at all - I cant even try to connect to any networks (the icon in my tray is a disconnected ethernet icon). In addition, when I look at my network adapters folder it is empty, but when I look at my network adapters in device manager I have way too many. They are all suffering from error code 31 (they have an exclamation mark next to them and the drivers cant be loaded), but there really are too many as well. All of my normal adapters are there, but I also have about 20 6to4 adapters which I can't uninstall (I tried using devcon and the microsoft hotfix, but they didn't work). I can, however, disable these adapters, but I can't uninstall them...

So it might be that I have two separate problems; that the no network adapters is one and the overload of 6to4 adapters is another.

If anyone has any solutions it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...

Thank you for the two posts. I had a similar problem where two virtual music folders in $USERPROFILE% were created, but there was just one in C:\\Users\$USERPROFILE%

I believe that this event occurred because I initially accidentally moved the music virtual folder in $USERPROFILE% to another area, and the 'MUSIC' link in the start menu located it there. However, at the time, since i have only been using Vista for 3 days now, i did not know that virtual folders existed. Thus, thinking that another music folder had been created, and was taking up space in my hard drive, I subsequently deleted the music folder.

Consequently, the location of the music folder did not work, but when i tried to fix that up, two virtual music folders showed up in %USERPROFILE%, and only one appeared in C:\\Users\$USERPROFILE%. I thought this was a registry problem, and decided to take a look at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders

I also looked at the shell folders as well. But, as I am not proficient in registry files, I did not do much except just check that the link for the music folder had not been tampered with, and was showing correctly, $USERPROFILE%\Music.

... and made a fundamental mistake of uninstalling adapters hastily without looking into it. Now when I try to re-install the adapters, I'm running into difficulties. Specifically, I don't have the CD-ROM I originally must have used, and the following message is popping up: "Files Needed - The file 'atl02_2k.sys' on Atlansic Fast Ethernet Adapter Installation Disk is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click OK." Unfortunately, I don't have any idea if there is a path where this is located, so installation cannot complete.

The reason I took this option to begin with was that the wireless connection on my laptop [Asus, Windows XP] was acquiring network address without ever connecting fully to the internet. I had previously tried another of other methods, such as manually entering an IP address, to no avail.

Now I think I've gone and added to the problem exponentially. Any help or advice to somebody unfamiliar with such teething problems would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
Apparently as the result of malware (I suddenly received many detected viruses using Avira and Malware Bytes), I can no longer access the internet. The Network Connections window is completely blank, and in the Device Manager, every single driver under Network Adapters (1394 net Adapter, Direct Parallel, Intel Pro/Wireless, Realtek, WAN Miniport, etc.) has a yellow exclamation mark. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. In some cases, I got a message saying uninstallation is not allowed. But in all cases, even where I could uninstall and reinstall, it didn't help at all. I also already tried running:
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
Each routine was successful, but didn't help. Running "Start netman start" gives a response that it is already running.
Any advice? Is there any way around reinstalling XP? Will that even help?
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro M70 running XP Professional.
Any advice is greatly appreciated... I have been working on this to no avail for over 12 hours.

I have a few extra Microsoft ISATAP adapters when i do an ipconfig/all. Can I delete some or all of them and furthermore what is their purpose(s)?

A:Is it safe to delete the Microsoft ISATAP adapters?

Quote:
The ISATAP #9 is related to Internet Protocol 6, which can cause issues with devices that don't use it and can safely be uninstalled as most networks today still use IPv4.

To remove IPv6 and all of it's associated devices:
Go into the properties for each network adapter, wired and wireless, and either uncheck the box next to Internet Protocol 6 (TCP/IPv6), that will disable it, or select it and click uninstall, which will remove it off the computer. Then go into device manager and remove any 4to6 adapters, WUN miniport adapters, or ISATAP adapters. Then reboot your computer.

If that does not work, try this:
To reset the TCP/IP stack go to this article and either click on "Fix it for me" or follow the instructions to fix it yourself:

I recently tried to remove some malware from my system, and then all of these problems happened. I can no longer connect to the internet, and my network connections folder is totally empty. Under network adapters, all of them are missing or corrupt. I hit the update button, and it says that I have the newest driver available. I uninstalled all of them, and then rebooted, but they were just corrupt again.

I cannot activate simple TCP/IP under network connections in Add/remove windows components, I don't know if that's important or not.

My workstation service fails to start.

I have tried to system restore, but it won't work.

I scanned the registries with regcure, but that didnt work either.

Booting in safe mode doesn't fix any of these problems.

and two other commands regsvr32 commands, i forgot which, then these icons came back, but I still have an empty network connections folder.

Hello 7Forums.

I'll start off with the scenario that brings me here.

Today, I managed to redecorate my bedroom; where my computer sat on top of a shaky, wooden desk. That desk is now gone, caput, and replaced by a much bigger, sturdier and prettier glass replacement.

Before I dissasembled the computer to re-decorate, I was able to browse the internet at ease. There were no problems at all...

However, after the new desk was setup - and all wires replaced in their correct slots, I find that I am unable to connect to the internet, or even the house's network! For the past year, I have been wired to the router using a RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. It was plugged into an extension cord, in my room, into the Ethernet port in the back of my computer. Downstairs, it's twin was situated no less than 2 feet away from the router - plugged into the first port.

Now, when I boot up the computer, the network notification presents the following message: "Unidentified Network. No network access", and sometimes presents a yellow ! next to it. So, I am reduced to typing on my mother's laptop - which has no problems connecting to the network.

I am able to use the ipconfig /release command, but unable to use the /renew - it hangs in the command prompt, then tells me that the DHCP server cannot be located. The IP, beforehand, was reverted to 169.254.223.117 - before all of this, I was 192.168.0.5

I've been attempting all sorts of fixes, for ... Read more

A:Unidentified Network; No Network Access - Powerline Adapters

The router itself would present you with a new Local Area IP, thus the prefix of 192.168.0.*, so I can almost guarantee that it's not your computer acting up. Personally, I'm not too sure on why or how it gave your computer the middle-finger, but it seems to be the culprit..

I'd try resetting your router back to Factory Default settings (Unplug its power source for about 5-10 minutes), plugging everything back in, and seeing how it goes from there.

EDIT::

Also, when you get the chance, I'd check to see if there are any available firmware updates for your router... just saying. Hope all is well mate.

Hey, I'm quite a beginner when it comes to computers, but I do know these things:

Under <Device Manager> the Network Controller has a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation mark, and as for the network adapters, I only have two bluetooth, and one Marvell Yukon Ethernet.

Now, I just got a new hard drive, and I completely reinstalled a clean Windows 7 Home Premium. Therefore, I'm rather sure that my drivers are missing.

My laptop is a Samsung NP-R780-JT01US
I have downloaded (Edit: AND installed) all the drivers, yet the network controller still does not work, and I still don't have any wireless Network Adapters.

I would like to know if this means that my NIC is broken, or if I simply need the right driver. I have tried to update the drivers, but finding them online seems to be impossible and I have no CDs or backups.

What are my options?

Thanks, CubinJ.

You should be able to delete the folder unless some of your programs are using it.

If you are using a FAT32 file system use a Dos boot disk to access the command prompt and delete the folder from there.

If you are using NTFS then use the recovery console to delete it.

I have several duplicate copies of (large) driver files.  I would think that I only need one.  One of the folders with drivers is c:\drivers.  I use Windows 7, so I imagine I need that folder.  I also have folders with some duplicate drivers:  \documents\double driver backup and \dell\drivers.
Do I need those last two?

A:Duplicate drivers; which folder(s) can I delete?

You should keep the c:\drivers.  You can delete the others, but if you need to delete because you are running low on hard drive space you really need to install a larger hard drive.  Considering the price of hard drives, now, there is no reason to have to delete, etc, because of drive space.

Hi all, sorry if this is not in the right category (it kind of mixes email and applications).

I work IT for a local school and we're moving everyone's email from Rackspace email to Gmail. The way we have everyone copying old emails over is to have them setup both accounts in Apple's Mail 6.5 program (all the teachers have Macbooks) and drag and drop from one account to the other.

Here's my concern, we have several teachers who've wound up with duplicate emails in their new Gmail inboxes. Is there a quick way to get rid of the duplicates without manually having to go through each email. Is there some trick on Gmail or a usable script on Mail 6.5 (all laptops on Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard) that will help out? Or perhaps some third party program or service? There are many ways to delete dups in columns. I do not want to delete rows. I do not want to delete rows if dups appear in the row. I want to delete the dups going across the sheet from left to right, row by row, going down the sheet from top to bottom.

For example, I five rows...

fox, sheep, goat, fox, dog bone, cat, fox, sheep
fox, sheep, goat, fox, dog bone, cat, fox, sheep
fox, sheep, goat, fox, dog bone, cat, fox, sheep
fox, sheep, goat, fox, dog bone, cat, fox, sheep
fox, sheep, goat, fox, dog bone, cat, fox, sheep

I want to delete the duplicate cells in each row. I want to end up with the following...

fox, sheep, goat, dog bone, cat
fox, sheep, goat, dog bone, cat
fox, sheep, goat, dog bone, cat
fox, sheep, goat, dog bone, cat
fox, sheep, goat, dog bone, cat

Just to clarify, if a cell is repeated in a row, one unique cell should be left in the row in which the repeated cell appears. I only want to delete repeated cells in the rows in which the repeated terms appear, leaving only one unique where the repeated cells appear. If the word "cat" appears five times in row 2 and three times in row 3, after the macro is run, the word "cat" should appear once in row 2 and once in row 3.

In some cells, spaces do appear because in some cells, the cells contain a short phrase (dog bone) rather than just... Read more

Running Windows XP Pro on several computers here. Only *one* of them has this problem:

Everytime I create a desktop icon, the computer adds a second identical icon on the desktop. The second icon can't be deleted. When I try to delete it, I get the error message "Cannot read from the source file or disk."

What gives? Any help appreciated. Thanx.

I'm wondering if a simple scan disk won't fix the problem. ScanDisk checks your hard drive for errors and then fixes them.

My ie "favorites" bookmarks are endlessly duplicating and cannot be deleted.  Is there any way to save my bookmarks and get rid of the copies?

A:Duplicate ie favorites files - cannot delete

Click start, run, type %userprofile%\Favorites and press enter. See what's going on in there with Windows Explorer.

I ran CCleaner and it found lots of duplicate files on my laptop. Should i delete the duplicates?

A:should i delete duplicate files on my computer?

Hi, That is one of the weak part of Windows - and other software. Each software creates its own folder and it normally uses that folder to run. Windows should be smart enough to store common files in only one spot but it can't work this out ! You can delete them BUT please note them where they are because you may have restore them back for other programs. My suggestion: keep them, few hundred megabytes now are just a piece of cake. Regards.

Hello,
I'm using a Toshiba M505-S4940 running Win 7 (64), and have developed the problem in the last several weeks of my system tray icon for wireless showing a red "x" instead of the normal connection signal. When I access the Network and Sharing Center and click the link to Change Adapter Settings, the window for Network Connections is entirely empty - no adapters, nothing (and thus no way to modify adapter settings). Checking in Device Manager shows both of my adapters (Wireless = Realtek RTL8192E, Wired = Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller), and both are functioning. I'm able to access the internet both wired and wirelessly. I've tried to update the drivers for the wireless connection, also tried to approximate how far back the problem started and doing a system restore to that point. I could restore back further but don't want to deal with having to reinstall all of the software that I've installed in the last 6 months. Any suggestions are welcome

A:No network adapters shown in network connections

Hello RunningPT12 and welcome to BC,
When you say that you are able to connect both via wired and wireless connections do you mean even when you are seeing a red "x" over your connections tab in the system tray and there are no connections showing when you try to change your network adapters?

Hello all,

as you can see from the subject the problem is a bit weird .. from the command prompt: ipconfig /all , i see everything but in the graphical interface not .. so i can't manage them and it's very annoying.

History of the problem:
The problem appeared after i made a big mess with the file and registry permissions when after using "subinacl.exe" to reset the registry permissions and correct some other problems, i began to get messages from programs and services that "There is not enough storage to complete this operation", anyway and after many hours made a successful recovery using a different vista installation to correct the file permission problem which locked me out from booting completely. The thing is that both registry and file permissions to Program Files, Program Files (x86), ProgramData, Windows folders were made manually to full permissions on everything to the system and administrators accounts and the same to the Registry Keys (without subinacl.exe this time so i know what is happening) . In the registry i had some notifications that it was not successful to everything. Anyhow app and window function seems to work fine now except the problem with the network adapters.

I imagine that it's again something with the permissions .. but to what? .. i can't risk damaging everything again! ..
Does anyone has any idea what i could check to see if the problem gets fixed ?

Thank you

A:Can't See Network Adapters in Network Connections (but they are working)

Forget it .. it was a service that didn't start .. it needed to change the account which was running it .. as i said in the beginning ... big mess ! ..
