Multiple comp issues (strange popup, issues with games)

Q: Multiple comp issues (strange popup, issues with games)

Okay, so I've been having some annoying issues on my computer, nothing serious yet but some are concerning. Feel free to ask for more info if needed.

Issue 1: I've had some jerkiness/lag and loading issues for some of the games I play, particularly Blizzard games (all of which should be well within system specs). The prime examples:

--> When I play Overwatch, sometimes character models/audio/sprays/projectiles take FOREVER to load for the first game I play after launching the program. All player models are essentially invisible, including my own (don't see the character's weapon or even HUD), and if I fire my weapon while invisible the map will react (breakable objects break), but all of the effects are invisible (if I fire a rocket, for instance, the rocket and explosion are invisible). I can still see usernames above allied players, but enemies are completely invisible. Models load at different rates (so one hero's model might load after a few seconds while the rest take minutes, for instance), any sprays just appear as the default spray (if they appear at all), and voice lines don't work. This has lasted for an entire round before, and when that happens the "play of the game" clip will often have invisible characters in it, even if they've loaded fully by the end of the round. Additionally, even once most/all assets are loaded, if I die and respawn there is a period (several seconds) where the screen is completely black even though my character is definitely in the game (if I move while the screen is black, the character will have moved when it comes back on, if I shoot their clip will be depleted, etc.). To attempt to fix this, I updated my video card driver (which was out of date). This appeared to fix it for a while...but the issues quickly returned so it's possible it didn't actually do anything, since this doesn't happen every time I play. On the bright side, the issues appear to be not quite as bad now, but it's difficult to say for sure.

--> When I play Heroes of the Storm, I am frequently briefly booted when I first load a game (the starting animation of everyone warping onto the map is jerky/freezes, and I'm kicked but immediately rejoin after). Furthermore, some games are INCREDIBLY laggy, which doesn't appear to be related to my internet service (which I admittedly have issues with, but mostly when other people on the network don't close out their Dropbox). Like, one game will have no issues, and the next will be unplayably jerky, occasionally lagging so hard that I actually lose control of my character for several seconds before being booted (and often taking a significant amount of time to rejoin, almost always longer than the quick boot at the start of a match). This might depend on what map the game is being played on; the newest map (Hanamura) seems to have the highest likelihood of experiencing issues.

Issue 2: Recently (within the last week or so) I've noticed that every now and again a mysterious popup will appear and immediately close itself before I can even see what it is. This seems to happen roughly once every 30 mins to an hour (I think...the interval might be longer, but the point is it's a continuous issue). I ran a "record your desktop" program so that I could get a screencap of it, but unfortunately it's poor quality...Image below (popup is in the top left of screen).

It's really difficult to read the file destination that appears there, but based on the folders on my computer I THINK that it's this:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/root/Office16/???(last part has me stumped).

I'm pretty sure that Program Files (x86) is just the Program Files folder copied over from before I upgraded to Windows 10 (was Windows 7 before). Also, it's possible that Office16 is actually Office15, but there doesn't appear to be another folder it could be. I actually have a Microsoft Office 15 folder on my normal Program Files folder (without the (x86)), so the other folders might be superfluous?

Needless to say this is concerning to me...I have up to date virus protection software (McAfee, but I'm considering switching to Avast since it's worked well on previous computers), but there's always a chance something slips through the firewall, so to speak.

Any help would be appreciated

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Symptoms: After several hours of use, IE7 and Windows Explorer will cease responding to right clicks, and often, shortly afterwards, will become totally unresponsive requiring a reboot. Hey floks,
This is my first post in the Vista forums. Thanks for having me!

Ok so straight to business...

I just built a new system and here are the specs:
Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard
Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz (not overclocked, stock fan/heatsink)
BFG 8800GTS SLI 512mb vid card (only one of these for now)
Four OCZ DDR2 2gig Ram (8 gigs total, which, thankfully Vista is recognizing all of)
500gig Maxtor SATA hdd
And I've got a DVD write all burner which is also SATA
600 Watt Power supply.. not sure of the brand as it came with the case
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Dell 22 inch wide screen monitor (not sure of the model) connected via DVI
Im using the on-board sound, lan, ect for now

Games I am (attempting to) play(ing):
Starwars Battelfront II
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Lord of the Rings Online
Quake 4

I haven't a big gamer for a long time with the exception of LOTRO. Ive been playing that one since beta. So I went down to the local game retailer after I got the system up and running and purchased COD4. What a fantastic game... except it locks up my system. It seems random when this happens. Sometimes I can play for several hours with no issues. Other times it will lock up within five minutes of play. And by "lock up" I mean it completely freezes the whole system so that the only way to get out of it is to hit the reset button on the tower.

With Battlefront 2 it runs great. The graphics are flawless... but the sound kind of stutters every once ... Read more

My guess is it's heat related. With as nice of a system as you've built you should really invest in a nice aftermarket heat sink for about $40-$50. I'm not sure how Everest taxes your system as I use OCCT. There is also Prime95 and some others to try as well.

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for reading / commenting on my post. Let me start by saying im not particularily tech-savvy guy, so if you have some suggestions, you might need to 'dumb them down.' The following issues started roughly 4 months ago, and have driven me all but crazy. (I'll list this in bullet points, because I always make run-on paragraphs otherwise) Okay, onto the problem:

Problem: Online games, (Rift, Wow, BF:BC2) used to work perfectly for me, but one day (coincidentally started after my purchase of a new video card and power pack) they started lagging horrifically. Strangely, my ping stays low.

Example 1: I log into a game of Bad company 2 and have 90 ping, however everyone on my screen will be 'rubber-banding', and I'll sneak up on someone, fire an entire clip into them, at which point they spin around and blast me. Its as if I am several (seems like 4-5) seconds behind everyone else in game. Or, I'll hop into a heli and begin flying, pass over a tank facing towards me, have time to continue past it, spin around but then it'll register that I've been hit and I'll spontaneously explode.

Example 2: I log onto wow, everything is fine on the character screen, and I get into game as usual. Once I'm on though, I notice that everyone else is running on the spot, my text doesnt display, and I cant use abilities. It'll stay like this for a maximum of 5 minutes, where all of a sudden everyone on th... Read more

Hi guys

I'm having some strange connection issues. Firstly, my PC is connected to the internet just fine, i'm here typing this now through my PC. I can browse websites perfectly and download files perfectly fine.

The issue comes with connection to a few things that i've noticed and i'm sure they're all intertwined to something but i'm not sure what.

I can't connect to the steam store. I can't use audio voice chat in Overwatch. I can't connect to the World of Warcraft servers.

Now I can play multiplayer games just fine, I can actually play Overwatch and type and do everything else, but it won't connect me to the voice chat in game.

I downloaded the new patch for WoW the other day and from when I hit the play button in battle.net I get the following error:

http://EU.patch.battle.net:1119/wow/cdns: World of Warcraft was not able to connect to the network data source. For help fixing this issue, please see: https://battle.net/support/article/7411

I have tried all their basic steps in that article to no avail.

Finally, the steam store simply shows:

Error Code: -130

Failed to load web page (unknown error).

I've completely uninstalled battle.net and WoW and reinstalled which hasnt helped, i've reset my router (it's wireless and a wired connection isn't an option). I did a pathping to the WoW servers which gave me this:

Hello,
So, I've got two separate, but somewhat related issues. One has been going on for a year and still hasn't been resolved (posted about it before) but I have some updated info, the other one is new.
AsHere I go ....

1. Can't Connect to the Internet
I all of a sudden could not connect to the internet. As my wireless isn't working currently, I used a wired connection. I am using that wired connection right now on my work computer that I am messaging from, so I know it isn't a modem/router issue. I have removed all the anti-spyware that I had and only installed Avast!, I re-installed all the drivers, and I contacted my internet provider. In troubleshooting with the internet provider, we tested the ping for www.google.com, which didn't work, but when we pinged the numerical ip address, it did. The same thing happened when I opened my browser. The representative said that the IP address was not being resolved by the DNS (is that correct)??? Anyways, that's where I am at - how do I resolve it so that the IP address is resolved?

2. First, for some extra background, please see the thread from a year ago that I had posted:
http://forums.techguy.org/networking/663585-wireless-issues.html
Here's what I posted initially before:
I have a Compaq Presario R3440CA with a Broadcom Wireless card. I used to be able to connect to my wireless just fine. Now when I try to 'Find network connections', the error comes up as follows:

I'm not sure if this is all part of the same problem but there are multiple things going on. On my laptop ( its an HP Pavilion DV6, with an intel core i3 CPU @ 2.20ghz, & 64 but operating system ) The only way i can get any sound to play is if I watch videos in my firefox browser. No sound will play when i use Chrome (which I prefer) or Itunes, or windows media player. The problem with watching videos in firefox is that there is about a 20 second delay before the video will play, and an error comes up to stop the plug in or continue. If you close out of that box the video will play but you will get the same delay every time it is paused and started again. Browsing in Chrome and playing videos from that browser there is absolutely no lag, its lightening fast, but you will not get any sound. Other simple programs ( Like solitaire) have the same lag, each card you click takes about 20 seconds for the move to actually take place. I've tried messing with my sound drivers to correct the audio issues but I am not sure if it is an audio issue, a flash player issue, or a combination. Any input?

I am trying to fix some problems on a client's Compaq Presario V6000 running Windows XP Home Edition. I think a full reinstall of the OS may be necessary but am having problems even with that. My preference, of course, is to fix the problems below without having to reinstall the OS. I have pulled off some of the client's data but since I cannot get it to read a blank CD, an external drive or a large 2.0 flash drive I have not been able to back up everything. It will read a 1GB flash drive of an earlier generation. (Of course the client had no backups and had never done a system restore point - see below regarding my clientele.)

The current problems are:
1. Setup from a Windows Home Edition CD cannot see the HD: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer". (I had hoped to set up a partition and reinstall the OS and then bring the user data over to the new install and then nuke the old one. I have done that before on a Dell that got caught in the isass.exe snafu when XP SP2 came out. I had also hoped to run Windows repair from setup to see if that would fix the problems on the current OS install.)
1.5 The Windows XP Home Edition CD is one I have that is a stand alone. It is not an OEM disk. I don't know if that matters. There are no recovery disks for this computer and since it will not see a blank CD in the drive I cannot make one.
2. The computer cannot connect to the Internet (wired or wireless).

hey guys. I recently been having so many problems with audio sync issues when mounting a 3D image. Video plays fine in my media player. (have tried totalmediatheater and poweriso11 seems to be the best so far). anyway it seems like it plays fine in 2D but 3D is giving it audio sync issues. I think ive pinpointed the problem and ive found that disabling my motherboard audio driver (intel) and enabling nvidia audio seems to have a better effect in 3D playback (again mounting). ive tried a few different 3d image backups by the way, i also didnt have a problem with intel hd drivers playing 3D but intel drivers started to give me a BSOD which lead me to buy a nvidia card for 3D. So back to the issue. Is there a way to have both audio drivers installed becuase I switch from tv to monitor for display and I have external speakers that I would like to use instead of my tv audio. I also have the latest nvidia drivers, chipset drivers, directx and most up to date bios. im running windows 7 64bit, gigabyte mobo, geforce gt 520, 12gb ram, intel i5 2500. Also says nvidia hdmi output not plugged in, in windows sound properties if someone can explain that. sorry for such a long typed problem.

Hello, I try to play old and new Games on the HP ZBook 15 G2 but each time between 2 - 15 minutes the Game freezes while the sound is still playing for at least 5 minutes until I can play further. It seems like the graphics card is buffering something like on a Video stream until I can continue playing. Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

I woke up today, I switched the main power switch (at the back of the PC) and pressed the power button to turn my comp on as normal...the blue lights came on...however there was no signal to the monitor and the computer turned itself off after around 20 seconds. I tried again and yep...same thing. The third time it booted up as notmal and allowed me to type this post.

NOTE: I had a powercut the day before (perhaps fried?)

What i worry is that this problem is going to get worse and eventually be a deja'vu of my previous computer.

Specs here:

Processor: Quad-core Q8200 2.33Ghz
RAM: 6GB
Operating type: 64-bit
Hard-drive: 640GB

Thank you to anyone that posts/helps.

Rootman.

A:New comp, same old issues.

You might have so-called "dirty" power which is fluctuations in the power to the extent that its harmful to PC components, especially the power supply.

Its bit hard to diagnose from a distance for sure but a good power supply backed by a UPS may be called for.

Or, it could just be a coincidence that the new computer started behaving as the old one. In the new computer's case in particular it sounds like the power supply is on the way out.

Well here goes...

I've recently returned from college back home, and I have a younger sister who has been using my computer while i've been gone...(Scary i know!)

There are so many things wrong with it i dont know where to begin...

Startup

-When starting up the computer i recieve a message...

"Floppy Discs Fail (40)

After this message, F1 to continue brought me to a screen where i recieved other error messages, but i was able to create a boot disc that another tech forum had supplied.

The only way the computer starts up is when it is booted from this disc and i choose a "Boot type?" from a list choices 1-10.

First choice has always worked, however it would be nice to not have to use it anymore

Possibly Keylogged?

-Next, she's always playing online games...(world of warcraft, and many others)

While browsing the forums of these games, i'm sure she carelessly clicked links and downloads...ect...ect.
Now i've read on many other forums that AVG will detect these types of spyware programs, but i'm not sure.

Also i feel this is the reason that i can't run Firefox 3.0 anymore either.

I've reinstalled and deleted all persional settings along with it still nothing.

Not sure if anyone else has or has had any of these problems, but help would be amazing...

I WANT MY COMPUTER BACK!! lol...Thanks again guys!

A:Many Issues With My Comp. Please help!

If it were me I would wipe the drive with something like killdisk, free
download. Start all over, you might be chasing problems for weeks and
still have problems.
Make sure that the floppy drive is enabled in bios, make sure that
floppy drive is connected. If all checks out you may have to replace
the drive, there cheap around 20 bucks.
Dont depend on the xp format tool to wipe the drive it will not. That
is why you need to run something like killdisk, then format with xp
and reinstall, clean as a whistle.....

Well, I built my new computer about a week ago and I guess i like it so far but it is too eirly to tell since I am still trying to get help installing the cable modem AT&T internet on another thread. What I am having problems with right now is that when I tried to install a LAN card it caused a few problems. When trying to install it I installed all the drives but the computer could not detect the to install the LAN card onto. It came up with a bunch of errors. The one I want to fix on this thread is that when I try to shut down my machine it will go to the "WINDOWS IS NOW SHUTTING DOWN" screen and once it gets there it stops and wont turn off. It doesnt go to the "YOUR COMPUTER IS NOW SAFE TO SHUT DOWN" screen or automaticly shut down by itself. It didnt do this before the LAN card issue came up. Anyone think they know what wrong or have anything that might help me?? thanks alot all.

A:New comp issues

You might consider this not so important but please check the same by removing the NIC and then shutting down the system without it. Does the system shutdown normally as earlier or the error continues?
And if it shuts down like earlier without any error then re-fix the card into the slot correctly and be sure that its fixed hard into the slot.

When trying to install it I installed all the drives but the computer could not detect the to install the LAN card onto. It came up with a bunch of errors. Click to expand...

Now this is very important, see that the support for the card is enabled in BIOS. Check for that and also see that the NIC is detected properly in the BIOS. Check if you can see the card in the Device Manger list of your OS. If its not there then I'd suggest you to re-check if the card if fit into the slot perfectly...

I too got the same problem. My card didnt show up in the Device Manager list and I was wondering what was happening but when I removed the card from the slot and again fit it correctly in there were no problems of any sort...

Please do check this and post back about the results...

Hey guys. Nice site you have here.

I am running Windows Vista on my Gateway laptop and recently have been having problems. My computer freezes within 10 - 30 minutes or so (time varies) after I log on. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work... it just freezes. It doesn't matter if I log in and don't even touch the keyboard/mouse, or if I am browsing something via Firefox... it just freezes. Today, it even froze at the log in screen. I turned the comp on after it froze... left for 5-10 minutes... came back to the log in screen and the computer was frozen

I tried a whole bunch of stuff. My virus protector Avast found some trojans but that didnt help.. I used another virus finder and it found something but i'm pretty sure it got rid of it (?) and I've used CWShredder and the Hijackthis file gave me this output:

Edit - this is AsklotsI'm trying to fix a friend's HP Mini . He didn't have a host file, or any protection really, and got hit with a few things. First was Win Antivir Pro, which was remarkably easy to kill (reboot, go into the task manager before the malware loads, end task, delete, run software to fix registry. Surprisingly easy, yet I haven't seen that method mentioned anywhere.)He also has major redirect issues. Primarily it occurs in IE8 and FireFox in both Google and Yahoo. Typically it seems to be bursts: every clicked link in a search will result in a redirect for 3-5 clicks, then it will operate fine. Occasionally a window with a search seems to open by itself. The redirect seems to involve URLs that have expired, which is beyond weird, and usually contain the search. Anyway, I'm usually good at killing these things, but here's the fun part: nothing really runs well. MAM runs fine but isn't finding anything regarding the redirect. ComboFix, my old standby (I know it says don't use unless told, but I've used it dozens of times), stalls at the AutoScan. It'll doesn't freeze, but it doesn't advance. It will give the message about how run times can easily double without ever advancing past this. I've tried renaming, same deal. GMER kind of ran, it went for about 45 minutes, then went to a black screen with a blue box giving some form of message but immediately reboot - it crashed the computer. I've run it 3 other ti... Hello Everyone,
Ever since I took my computer to the local computer store to get fixed it's had more problems. It was brand new and only needed a new hard drive...when i got it back it needed a new power switch, mother board, and memory card. At least that's what he said, all of that was checked before being sent in and none had a problem. I've since refused to take it back to another repair guy...it reminded me too much of the stereotypical car repair man who rips women off.
So the last 2 days I've found myself at a new problem...I hit the power and the power button flashes a second then turns off. So I reach behind the computer and flip the psu off completely for about 20 secs and turn it back on. After doing that the computer starts up, however it starts up slowly...
I'm wondering if it's the motherboard or the psu...anybody have a problem like this before or maybe someone knows how to help?
Please and thank you very much!

I currently have a post about my laptop. Since it has been down I have been using the husbands desktop. It has now started to show early symptoms of something going on. My laptop started getting really really slow and dragging on forever and then one day it was bad, and I discovered a trojan with malwarebytes. This isn't urgent but would love to find out this needs a good cleaning or something rather than something serious, like my laptop. Also, I would love a personal opinion about which anti virus program I should keep or don't have and should install. All of the volunteers on here I have much respect for because computers drive me nuts sometimes

Thank you sooo much for your time and help

Hi Everyone!

Normally I'm pretty good at this sort of thing, but this time I'm stumped. The other evening I started getting PopUp displays for random rogue spyware removers and the like. Rebooted in Safe Mode, did scans, cleaned up... still having the problem. I've fixed the majority of it, but every once in a while, I still get one or two. Hopefully someone here can help! I'm currently scanning with SpyBot S&D, Malawarebyte, Stinger, and AdAware. They all pick up problems and clean them, but then on reboot they still occur. Here's my log from HJT.

I got my own issue fixed here quite a while ago, but now I'm back to see if I can get some help with some issues a friend of mine is having. (Unfortunately, she doesn't live near me, so I don't have personal hands-on access to her computer, but I can pass on any suggestions/solutions.) She says the 2 she keeps seeing are Aurora and "Surfsidekick3". She's run both Spybot and Ad-Aware, and neither fixes the issue. Here's her HijackThis log.

First you need to unzip (extract) Hijack This and move it to a permanent folder. It will not function properly when run from the zip folder or the Temp folder.

You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Right click on the HijackThis.zip file and choose "Extract all" and extract it to the Hijack This folder you created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Hi,
I'm trying to sort out a PC for a couple who look after Chinese kids when they're not at school, and it looks like the kids have got the Pc infected with some sort of Pop-up dialer or auto loader. I've tried various spy-ware and virus scans but nothing has stopped the pop-ups.

The computer has been infected with WinIogon.exe hidden in the System32 folder, but I've deleted this (but not from the registry - just dissabled it using msconfig). Firstly could you instruct me on how to delete it from the registry and startup list, and secondly could you take a look at my HiJackThis log and give me some hints as to how I might prevent the popups.

There's always one popup at startup, and then they load fairly regularly after that, often just after a WLLoginProxy.exe connection attempt is blocked by their firewall.

A:Lots of popup issues in IE.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button... Read more

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Hi,

I have been having a problem for the past 2 days where when I am using IE 7 after a short period of time I am no longer able to type as shortcut boxes keep opening everytime I press a key. I have an older model Dell (Inspiron 8600) running Windows XP. I have performed the following actions: did a system restore, ran a Spybot search and removed the registry problems and I also used the SmitFraud removal tool in Safe mode. However, the problem does not seem to go away unlessl I boot up with F8 and choose the Restore Last Know Good Configuration option. Even then, after a short period of time (which varies from minutes to hours) the shortcut pop-up issue happens again! I have also noticed that the Windows shortcuts (CNTR V etc.) don't work either. I ran Hijack This and saved the log file which I attached below. Can someone please tell me if it looks like there is anything I should remove? One final thing. I installed the latest Shockwave update 2 days ago and it seems that this is the trigger point for when the problems all began. Any help that someon can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello mnzy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That would be the taskbar thumbnail preview. If you like, you could use either option in the tutorial below to disable it. OPTION ONE would be the easiest way though.

Very similar problem to Zimp who posted here recently with popups after torrent downloading. My machine has been problem free for a couple of years, when after a download pop-up and pop-under windows started appearing. Initially I ran Super Anti Spyware, which identified some cookies, which it removed. Immediately afterwards up they came again, and sure enough new cookies had appeared. So I went on an anti-cookie mission and added the google toolbar, changed the pop-up settings to require permission, and still they appeared, starting a pop-under window using a URL that had been OK'ed for cookies, and then turning into a clicksor window. At this point I googled until I found Bleeping Computer and its excellent advice, and started downloading the various tools Hijack this, Malwarebytes AM, Ad-Aware, and Sygate firewall.Although none of these identified an infection, the pop-ups have stopped, but at the price of Explorer almost not running at all. Every page hangs repeatedly (I have to type this in notepad because it would take an hour in Explorer), crashes, and causes everything to hang in the background.I was going to follow on the Zimp thread as it sounded so similar, but noted the advice not to run Combofix without adult supervision. Have a DSS log. From looking about t'internet I know some of my system is mucked up (wudb.dll), but I'm not sure how badly. I'm getting popups - mainly to bogus anti-spyware sites, and other virii are being downloaded that I hope my various antivirus stuff is dealing with, but I'm not sure. Aside from the reoccuring virii dealing-with, Symantic, SUPERantisyware, Windows Defender and AdAware all draw a blank when run.
