T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

Q: T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

Hi, There seems to be 2 types of fan modules installed on the T460s (besides the one that is for the model with dGPU). One of them is with one heatpipe, the other one is with two heatpipes. Two Heat PipesSingle Heat PipeCan someone tell me what is the difference between two and which one is more efficient? Lenovo Staff maybe? Also what is the reason for that some i7 are with 2 Heat Pipes and others are with 1. There is also difference between the fan modules. The single heatpipe fan is with 4 wires, while the other one is with 5 wires. P.S.> And NO it is not the i7 vs i5 CPU, because I have i7 and I am with single Heat Pipe.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: T460s - Different FANs and Heat Pipes

The only one I have seen has 2 pipes. Was one of them made earlier than the other? (On the model sticker, there is a manufacture date after the serial YY/MM.) The parts list only shows one manufacturer. As far as 4 wires vs. 5 wires, I would expect it wouldn't matter. Normally, only 3 wires are used - power, ground and tach pulse. I would expect it wouldn't matter. I looked at eBay for T460s fans for sale thinking I could see a picture. They had 2 for sale - one with 1 pipe and 4 wier; the other with 2 pipes and 5 wires.

How effective are heat pipes, could they be used to cool a P4. If the copper pipes were brought outside the case and placed in a sutible cooling medium e.g an ice bath and the section of the pipe that was in the case was insulated to keep the case temp down, would this make a suitable silent cooling system.

A:Heat Pipes

Heat pipes are now used in heat sinks very effectively these days. I was a little sceptical to the efficacy of heat pipes till I realised that most laptops use this tech to keep the CPU cool, and comparison tests have shown that its much more efficient thatn without it.

How it works:
Basically, it just provides a heat conducting rod with low thermal resistance. Therefore, its efficacy is reduced the longer it is. Its like stretching a metal rod over a fire, a short one you'd burn your hand pretty fast, a long one you might not feel anything at all for a long time.

Also, I doubt you'd want to insulate the section of the pipe in the case, you'd more probably insulate the whole thing. At least you'd insulate the bit outside the case, so that the cold temps from your ice bath will reach the PC. But you want it to reach the CPU, so you'd insulate the whole bit. And you'd need a really thick heatpipe....

I won't suggest you do that.

A better solution? Water cooling, and run your radiator through that ice bath of yours

I have a Thinkpad T460s since a couple of months. It's the i7 edition with 20GB/1TB edition. The device has been working fine so far, although the CPU fan had to be replaced shortly after I got it (rattling noise). Since a couple of days, the Thinkpad is spinning up the fan very often. Just a simple interaction such as opening Chrome triggers the fan to blow quite loud for some time (20-30s at least). When compiling using Visual Studio, the fan almost spins to the loudest it possibly can. The thing is: it didn't do that all of the time I've had it.  Even when it's completely idle (say 0-2%), the fan still humms a little bit (it didn't do that before either). Could this indicate a hardware issue? I have NBD support but should know whether this could indicate some failure. Thanks for any advice.

Hi all, I bought a new T460s laptop last month. This week I noticed that the last window of the fan vent (the one nearest to the microphone jack, see photo) has some spongy/foamy material at the end. On contacting the support team on phone, they said the vents should be clear. Can any other users or the Lenovo team confirm that this foam in the last window is due to a faulty device and not by design. If so then I can send this to the repair center. I want to be definitely sure that this is a problem before I send off the laptop, as it takes up to two weeks to get the laptop back from repairs.

Hey,
In the past week my computer shut off out of nowhere twice. Couldnt turn it on for few minutes aswell.

I did check the fans and they seem to work and are pretty dust free. The computer has Heat sensors *beeps when it gets hot*
Currently when i open world of warcraft (just redownloaded it) it starts to beep right away. Currently no game open on these screenies but call of duty is being installed with steam.

Main thing, is everything okay with it, and any recommendations?

at the moment my AMD athlon xp 1900+ is running at it's regular speed of 1.6GHz (12 x 133mhz), which is fine, except that bios/a system info program are telling me that (after an hour or so to heat up) my cpu temperature is at 58 degrees C (and system temp of 42c).
I know this is too high because in other threads i have discussed similar problems, and know my cpu should be running at 40-50 degrees max.

I recently upgraded my heatsink/fan from this tiddly akasa one to this big q-tec one (except the fan is off this higher end one).

this new cpu heatsink/fan did improve things quite a lot, but it's still too hot, do i need extra system fans? and i do, wont they make a lot of noise? (and also i'm not sure which size will fit my atx case).

thanks

Hey,

Since fixing the problem with my Core2Duo (and you guys helped) I've realized how important keeping your system cool is. I'm going to get rid of the stock heat sink that came with my processor and get a better one but I'd also like some advice on keeping the rest of my case cool too.

What heat sink do you think would be best to keep my CPU temp down on a Core2Duo 2.33 GHz. I don't want to go nuts so keep mid-range price in mind please. I wouldn't like to spend more than $70 on any of these components by themselves.

I have a G-Lite 330/331 case with one rear fan. This case has a spot for 2 fans on the side although one is occupied by a tube that directs airflow away from the CPU. There is also a spot for a fan in front.

I have two SATA hard drives, a stock GeForce 9600 GT with no extra fans or heatsinks on it, and a Sound Blaster Live 5.1.

It already stays mostly below 30'C but I'd like to keep it that way. What do you think would be a decent amount of peripherals to keep this system cool?

I have a new gateway notebook with an 1.6ghz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-50 cpu... ive recently checked (10 mins ago) my temps inside this thing and my cpu core temp is running at 160F. an insanely high temp. is there a way to improve cooling in this thing without underclocking (im a overclocker not an underclocker) ive never seen it this hot until now...any help would be great i curently have the computer sitting on a honeywell fan to keep it cool... and im down to 110F yay! but this is no solution

A:HEAT HEAT HEAT Gateway heat woes

Yes, that converts to a bit over 71 degrees Centigrade... and is getting to the edge of its range... You will have earlier failure.
That model simply does not have the cooling system you need with three of four fans to move the air out.
If you have dogs or cats, clean the guts of the case with Dust Off every week... to remove the dust and hair.
But there isn't much help for you. Lower priced laptops never make good gaming machines.

Recently I was getting artifacts in games and noticed that the card was running hot so I got an Artic Cooler on it which is fine (much cooler now).

However in games I get the checkboard pattern over the game. The framerate is perfectly fine. Setting games to use 16 bit color / z-buffer reduces the problem slightly. I installed ATITool to see if underclocking would help then I noticed in the window "Active Pipelines: 8". Its a 9800SE, it should have four pipelines and every time I have used ATITool before it has reported four.

I have never done the soft or hard mod to this card.

I've tried a complete format and reinstall with various old and new drivers and the problem I still there. As I said the framerate etc. is fine. From what I have read about the softmod, the checkboard effect is often because the card can't handle the mod and do eight pipelines, so (hopefully) if I can set it back to four it will work fine.

Any idea why it would set itself to eight even though I have never modded it?
Is there any way to set it back to four? Maybe a bios flash that restricts it to four?

Thanks for reading.

I have a HIS x1800gto that i know is unlockable with the right bios, ive acquired a bios that will do it its just that i am having incredible difficulty doing so.

My comp at first didnt have a floppy drive so i went with boot cds. The bootable cds wouldnt work for reasons unknown, i created like 5 of them, none would really get working so i jsut caved in and attatched a floppy drive.

created a bootdisk with atiflash, didnt work, reasons unknown, maybe because its a HIS ICEQ3 x1800gto and not a native (made by ati) card, so i used flashrom240, 237 and 16p. none worked. the same problems would come up-

device 0 not found
ati adapter not found
error 0FL01 when i tried to force flash.

obviously the card is there and is working fine. before this a while back and as recently as a few hours ago i attempted atiwinflash. ive heard horror stories about this program but it never really did or work for me till about 40 minutes ago. what i did was i just flashed it again with a fresh HIS x1800gto bios in an attempt to get flashrom to recognize my card. no dice.

now im at a loss since i know the card is there, its operating normally, its not overclocked, temps are prolly at 40c i would wager, so everything should be a go. anybody else have this card or been thru this?

thanks for any help my dudes.

A:Trouble flashing HIS x1800gto into having 16 pipes

Flashing those cards isn't guaranteed to work. If it was, they would be sold with all 16 pipelines already enabled. Maybe MOST of them can unlock, but maybe yours just can't. Obviously, if they could ALL be flashed to 16 pipelines, they would be sold as having 16 pipelines because the company could sell them as a more powerful model and get more money from them. Those ones are cards that were made to run on 16 pipelines, but were unable to according to some test (however inaccurate that test may have been). This means that some WILL run at 16 pipes but some won't. I guess you just got unlucky

Aluminium Heat Sink V Copper Heat Sinks for CUP. If you change from a Aluminium Heat Sink to a copper heat sink for yoru CPU in your tower computer (not the slimeline one) the fat boy model.  How much MORE % better does copper work better than aluminium??

A:Aluminium Heat Sink V Copper Heat Sinks for CUP.

A little. Copper has roughly twice the thermal conductivity of aluminum: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/thermal-conductivity-metals-d_858.html Also use a high silver content thermal compound applied very thin but fully covering the processor core In practice you will see a very small difference in the operating temperature of the computer. Unless you are running hot it is probably not worth the trouble. Aluminum is generally good enough. Airflow is also at least as important as the metal used in the heatsink.

After some effort, I finally got a Shipment Notification for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Generation Part Number 20KH002HUS that I ordered last Wednesday. It was shipped from North Carolina rather than Hong Kong. The Order Visibility Portal (OVP) provided the Serial Number. With it I was able to find-out which of the two thermal modules (fans) is installed on my X1 Carbon. The Lenovo PC Support website shows that it is Part 01YR203 made by Furukawa (Nidec) rather than Part 01Y204 made by Delta. Suddenly, excitement turned into disappointment. Are all Nidec fans on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Generation noisier than Delta fans? What has been your experience?

It's been awhile since I installed my last CPU -

I just bought a P4. The instructions for mounting
the heat sink (& fan) do not refer to using any
type of (I can't think of the word) that white
compound I used last time to give good thermal
conductivity from the cpu to the heat sink.

Is that stuff not used any more?

If it is, what do I call it and where would I get some?

Thanks!!

A:Use "heat transfer" compound between P4 & heat sink?

If you got a retail version cpu, that comes with the heatsink/fan, it likely has a "thermal pad" built in, so it wouldn't need thermal interface material. So if you got a little square of something on the bottom of the heatsink, that's all you need, but if not, just a bare heatsink, put some thermal material on it. IIRC, my retail p4 had a little square that looked like a piece of aluminum stuck on the heatsink, which is a thermal pad.

Yes, as the title suggest, I have a question about fans. Right now I have a computer that can actually heat my small room. First off, I have four sticks of RD RAM that have the heat spreaders on both sides. You can fry and egg on these things. Then I have an Asus fanless 7600GS, the heatsink on this gets fairly hot.

I have two rear 80mm exhaust fans, one spins at about 4300RPM and the other is about 2400RPM (I think its on its way out, going to replace both). When I put my hand back there, its pretty hot, almost like a blow dryer. I want to add an extra fan or two but I can't decide what would be best, I would like to ask your opinions on this.

First I thought of adding a front intake fan, but my case only has that small front vent that almost underneath. I have a spot to mount a front fan, but it wouldn't actually be taking in air, theres no vents in the case there. I was also thinking about adding one of those 5.25" drive bay fans for intake. I found a nice one on NewEgg that has two fans, I thought this could help take in some air. Not sure how well they work, I also want to keep the db level down.

My second thought, and the one I think I'm going to go with, is adding a top fan. First I thought to make it an exhaust fan. I see these a lot but I don't know how good they are, do they interfere with the rear exhaust fans?

Then I thought to make a top intake fan. I wouldn't want to pull more in then is being exhausted though, that doesn't... Read more

I got an t460s last augest, and I have to say, for the price I paid, I am really disapointed. I had better luck with my 500 dollar HP laptop, and my old t420. Firstly, my T460s had an unfortunate fall the other day. It fell from 2 and a half feet, and it was in semi-padded bag. The hinge ended up breaking. This was not covered under warretny, and as a student, its hard to have to pay for such stupid fixes. I bought this thing because it was (supposidly) tough. I could have gotten an Macbook pro, but I loved my old thinkpad too much. The hinge ended up snapping (litterally, the plastic piece snapped off of the screen. The rest of the laptop was completly fine! No dens, blemishes, nothing, just an crappily put together hinge. Secondly, the screen (lg one), started turning yellowish (not from smoke, or other chemicals, I've saw this happen on one of my schools old thinpads used by one of the administrators). This was however covered under warrenty, and they are going to fix it. I love this laptop, but with silliy probeblms like this (for 1500!!!!!!!), I can't recomend it. I was hoping this laptop was going to last my from now, thru at least the first year of university. If lenovo can replace this hinge, mabye I'll change my mind. Attached is an picture of the hinge.

I have decreased my screen brightness to 30-50% depending on the light in the room. When typing word docs I thnk the  brightness burns battery power, sometimes as much as 60% of your battery goes to the screen or so the battery monitor is telling me. So I've kicked up the life to over 6 hours with less brightness, but I don't think I should have to kick down an ultrabook that much to get what was promissed.  I did have a problem with the recommended scaling at 150% which crashed the display drive several times. then I set it to 125% and it's fine.

hi All,My company allow me to purchase the T460s (with 8GB RAM + 256SSD) vs. T460 (with 16GB RAM + 512SSD).I read the specs of the 2 units that IT sent me, there is a difference in the display:T460s listed as 14" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, Anti-Glare T460 listed as 14" FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare both has same 1920 x 1080.   But, T460s has the word "IPS".    Will it make any different in viewing prictures taken from Canon Pro DSLR? the T460s weight 3.0lb vs. T460 weight 3.8lb.  it is ok.  not big deal for me. I heard the case and keyboard for T460s are better? is it really a big deal? The T460 will have better battery, plus, I can add another battery (replace the DVD).    Overall, I like the T460 for work more.   At the same time, I am a semi Pro photograph guy, so, I need to be able to display nice pictures on my laptop for clients.  So, if the IPS (with same 1920 x 1080) does not make much different vs. FHD, I would ask my IT to order the T460. Please help to give me your advice.thank you so much, best regards,

If you are into photography, I would suggest going with the 2560x1440 WQHD, for better coverage of sRGB color.

Hello, I am considering purchasing the T460S however I have a question about the SODIMM slot. Is the DDR4 slot visible once the maintenance hatch is opened on the bottom? And if so, are any sorts of driver updates required for the RAM to operate correcly, or would getting any 4GB DDR4 SODIMM stick work fine (with equal or higher clock speeds)?

Exact Model: 20FAS2BJ0S In Lenovo Solution Center it says I have 8 GB of a maximum of 32GB. See attached image.  There are no 24GB SO-DIMM Modules. There is one soldered 8GB module and I can by a 16GB or a 32GB SO-DIMM. 16 + 8 gives 24. How do I get 32GB?

That means the maximum supported RAM could be 32GB (2x16GB), not that you have 32GB

My WiFi speed it very slow. On ATT 300meg wifi, I am only get about 46m down and 1.8m up.  But on wired connection it show 290m down and 30m up on Speedtest.net Diagnostics show everything in green. Is this normal? If not should it be faster and how do I do this? Maybe there is a newer Wifi Card?  Right now it an Intel AC-8260 model?

As some people have asked about compatibility of the Samsung EVO 960 1TB with T460s I just wanted to report that my new T460s (20FAS5JY00) works great with this drive under Linux. Drive is really fast, giving it a test run now by syncing the full Ethereum blockchain. I also upgraded to kernel 4.11 to try the newly merged NVMe patches (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives/NVMe#NVME_Power_Saving_Patch) and they appear to be working (see log below). I haven't measured power consumption though. Also in case it's useful for someone: I got this memory stick for a total of 24GB and it works great: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-17000-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B015YPB6HQ Log:  [email protected]:/# lsb_release -d

Hello all - I Am planning on purchasing a Lenovo notebook for my X-Mas gift. I do require a fingerprint reader as I Am in the Financial Services industry and the added security of this, has served me well in the past. My concern is the T460 line is at least four (4) years old and I do not want to purchase something which will be retired in the next few years... to this end, can anyone give a guess as to the life-cycle of this line or any newer line which offers the fingerprint reader and is good for business applications? I will like to have the option for SSD (1t) drive and an I7 or at minimum I5 with up to 20g Ram. When I purchased my T61 several years back, it was retired within a year.... this is a reason for my concern, founded or unfounded in anyones opinion? TIA for any and all input..

T61, 6465, Vista
