Deleting data from a corrupted USB storage device

Q: Deleting data from a corrupted USB storage device

Hi All,

I have a SanDisk Cruzer Crossfire 1GB. It was working fine, but the other day my wife's work PC crashed - in the middle of backing up some data to the Cruzer. Ever since then, it has failed to work.

If I plug it into our home (XP) PC, it recognises the stick and it shows up fine in My Computer. If you try to explore it, you get a generic disk i/o error message, or sometimes it reports that the drive is not formatted. If you attempt to format it fails to complete.

Now, I got in touch with SanDisk tech support and they have agreed to replace the stick, which is great. So... I downloaded an App from Data Doctor Recovery, which was able to go in and identify most of the files on the stick. I have now backed these up. The problem is that I don't want to send back the stick as it is because it contains personal data. So, I'd like to 'wipe' the stick first.

Many hours of browsing the net later, I cannot find anything that'll do this. Most I have tried don't recognise the drive, or report i/o errors when attempting to write.

I have tried using Disk Admin in the PC management, but the relevant options (such as delete partition) are greyed out.

Can anyone help me please by suggesting a method I could use to wipe the drive. Seeing that the Data Doctor was able to ignore bad sectors and find files, I am assuming that it must be possible to have an app that ignores bad sectors and wipes good ones...

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. I have to send the stick off ASAP.

Many thanks advance.

Preferred Solution: Deleting data from a corrupted USB storage device

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

I was sure there was an option to delete files as well on Data Recovery Doctor... I could be wrong though. Most other recovery programs will also have a delete section...

I have many USB driven devices, flash drives, MP3 players, etc. and when i transfer data to these devices, the data becomes corrupt and unusable, or in music/pictures, the data only seems to get partially there. After transferring some images to the mass storage device, they came out garbled, like the pixels were rearranged and put in the wrong order. Some images are not even viewable. Music skips, as if I was playing a CD with deep scratches.

Transferring data from these devices have no effect on the data, it only occurs when I am sending it to the device. I have used every USB port on my computer with no success. One bizarre occurrence I have noticed is that I have a USB printer that seems to be unaffected by this corruption.

A:USB Mass Storage Device Data Corruption

How many USB devices do you have and how many ports. Are you using hubs?

External devices are slow compared to hard drives. If you are experiencing corruption playing music and video files from USB, they may be too slow. Copy the files to your hard drive.

USB has limited bandwidth, like anything. Too much data cannot be transferred at one time.

I have a XPS 15 9560 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD i7-7700HQ.
The inside of the laptop looks like this:

I would like to add a new HDD/SSD in the free 2.5 inch bay. But it seems like there are few issues.
1. I did not receive a cable adapter for an extra SSD, so I have to get one, I also don't even know how that cable is called, not to say from where to buy one.
2. Is the circled port supporting fast enough data transfer? would be a pity if I buy an SSD and cannot get higher speeds than a HDD, I mean there is also a M2 SSD in there, would they conflict each other?
3. The port is called "JHDD" what does this mean? Only HDD supported? Or can it take an SSD?

A:DELL XPS 15 9560 56whr Battery additional data storage device

You can contact Dell Spare Parts for that cable. A Dell rep may even post the part number and that department?s phone number here for you. I?m surprised you have a bracket with no cable, though. I thought you either got both or neither. Anyhow, it?s a SATA III 6 Gbps interface, so it can handle an SSD just fine. Lots of people have installed 2.5? SSDs in their XPS 15s.

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Today my old problem appears again as Corrupted disc...
I have Get Data Back NTFS (and i used before plenty of times for recovery, loss data or unwanted deletions) but..

This time im stuck.. Becouse the disk i try to recover includes 870 gb (about) used disk space (only audio files) only 50gb (about) empty space... Thats too big for me to recover to other disks.. i don't have enough spaces that my other disks can handle..

I have about 300 gb FREE disk space in several disks or partitions include My thinkpad SL510 Notebook..
So my question is
wit keeping my lost data in corrupted disk first, can i take them slowly to this 300 gb spaces (i know i can) and after create somehow emty space (deleting those recovered 300 gb + 50 on corrupted disk) and
use that empty space for more recovery. ???? Or smilar solutions.. Becouse DISC PRICES IS HEAVY nowadays and really i'm out of budget with buying some
equipments upgrades..
Like creating slowly slowly some extra spaces (don't know how)

I know i look silly in situation becouse i know u should never write to same disc if you dont want to say goodbye to your files..

Hi, I'm having a slight problem with my computer.

It originated when I was using an image mounting tool, after removing one of the simulated drives while my usb thumb drive was connected. A new drive called removable disk appeared with the same drive letter as the simulated drive I removed. If I go into the device manager I see it as "Generic Storage Device USB Device". Removing it also removes the new drive from my computer, however each time I reconnect my usb thumb drive I get that one popping up. I also get my thumb drive, but besides that I get a "ghost" image of one that I can't open, and it remains even after safely removing my usbstick, and remains until I remove it in the device manager. I'm guessing this is related to windows 'remembering' the ids of the devices you connect, however I can't remember where that is stored in the windows registry. Any ideas about what I can do?

Thankful for any answers

I stupidly installed Nortons Anti Virus 2000 for Win 98 on my new computer which has Win XP. Every thing seemed to be working till I tried to bring up the program. I got " Norton Integrator could not initialize the current frame class. Please make sure that you did not directly run the integrator." So then I thought, heck, get the new 2003 for XP so I tried to uninstall the 2000 version. I get, The log file 'c:\Program Files\Navnt\navnt.isu' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue. What the heck do I do now???? I don't want to try to install the new program till I get the old one off for fear of more problems. I have a corrupted external hard drive. I used seagate's file recovery program and got some of my files back. I want to keep the drive without reformatting, but I have some files on there I want to delete. The problem is I can't access the drive normally (through Explorer). When I try to it asks me to reformat. The only way I can get to it is through the recovery program, which doesn't have a delete option that I can find. Is it possible to delete those files?

While testing a folder/file security program I've ended up with a folder that cannot be deleted. The folder had been hidden, perhaps encrypted, and (somehow) password protected. It now looks normal (although all the lower level folders and files have been renamed). However, when I try to delete the folder or any of its contents I get a popup saying "Could not file this item. This is no longer located in F:\. Verify the location and try again. F:\ is the proper path, and Windows Explorer shows the folder there.

I know I can reformat the drive, but it contains a lot of stuff that would have to be moved first. I'd rather not do that if there is an easier way.

Is there some way to tell Windows to delete a file whose name does not match its entry in its containing directory? (Or whatever the problem is here.)

Hello Pokeefe,

You might restart the PC to see if it may just be a ghost folder that will be gone afterwards.

If not, then you might see if the free programs Unlocker or FileAssassin may be able to remove it.

Hope this helps,

Anyone ever come across a font that was corrupted and wouldn't let you delete it or reinstall it? I tried cutting it and that didn't work either. It just says cannot delete file. Cannot read from source file or disk. I can delete other fonts though and this one looks italic when it shouldn't and the size is 0k so I know it's messed up. I also tried deleting it in DOS and to no avail. I ran a chkdsk /r and that came up clean. I even installed Font Agent and ran it and it found no corrupt fonts. I tried digging it out of the registry and it's not there. The font name is SNBC____.pfm I believe it came on a floppy with a printer. Anyone got an idea? I've done some searching but can't come up with anything promising. This is on Windows 2000. Thanks for any help.

all i can think of is that the PFM extension is indeed a font. adobe, iirc. when you did your registry search, did you search for Hex: 00 01?

After moving an email to my 'saved stuff' folder within the Storage folder, I delete the original item within the Inbox.

I find that the saved item has also vanished.

This has happened over 6 times. I keep restoring the item by sending it to myself again from another source.

I've been assuming that an item in the Inbox that is also in the Storage folder area would result in having two emails on my machine. Is this wrong? Is one a shortcut?
If anyone knows of a meaningful explanation of the Folders and theory, please post it.

I'm using the 2009 version, but 2011 should work the same: When I move a message from any pop3 account folder to a storage folder, it just moves and there is no need to delete it from the source pop3 folder. You could try a repair of Windows Live Essentials via Programs and Features. It sure sounds like something is wrong.

OK so I downloaded around 10 episodes of this show from youtube onto a folder. then i added that to my itunes library from there. now ive seen all of them so i first deleted the 10 songs from my folder. but then when i checked my itunes library and resynced my ipod, the videos were still on my ipod. so i deleted the videos from my itunes library now. However, I dont think they are actually deleted from my computer as it was almost instantaneous when I right clicked and selected Delete and they all deleted (Its was way too fast). Any ideas/help? Oh and I have Revo Uninstaller. Don't know if that helps or not.

A:itunes help - completely deleting storage space

Generally speaking...deleted files on a volume of any sort (containing a recycle bin account) are not erased until the Recycle Bin is dumped. Then that space is reclaimed as free by the drive/volume.

Sooo...deleting anything from your system...only moves it into limbo (unless the file is too large for the Recycle Bin) and it is removed when the Recycle Bin (desktop) is emptied.

Yeah so umm . . . my OS HDD died yesterday, and my other two drives are in a storage pool together (thus not bootable) after two days of trying to set up a dynamic partition in the pool using diskpart (which I'm now fairly confident can't be done XD) was wondering if there is a way to simply delete the storage pool with the tools you have available on the usb boot installer from the iso.

Otherwise I'm going to have to wait until i can buy a new HDD, which in my position could be a very long time, well, unless there is a way to make the thing bootable as is that I failed to think of. There isn't exactly any help on this topic available yet (I may be the first to hit this for all I know, heh heh)

I work as a systems admin for a small-business, and recently upgraded the drives in our server, because the limited space was causing files to be corrupted. This prevented any further corruption, and I was able to delete all but TWO corrupted Excel files on one of the drives. These two files aren't doing any harm, but I'd still like to try to get rid of them. When I try to access the files, or delete them, or change ownership or permissions, I get a message stating "file not found". I have tried to delete them through a command prompt, and have even run CHKDSK /f in order to automatically fix any errors, but with no luck. Does anybody know of another way to remove these files, or possibly of a utility that I could obtain? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Apologies if a solution to this has already been posted, I've had a look around the forum and can't find anything

I'm having trouble with a corrupted music file that I just can't delete, I can find the file in the iTunes music folder on my hard drive but whenever I try to do anything with it (delete/rename/move etc) even just right clicking it causes my computer to crash. The file in question was downloaded from Soundcloud & has previously worked fine and I have no idea what has caused it to corrupt.

Due to this corrupt file I can no longer scan my computer with Norton because it crashes as soon as it gets to that file and today I tried to backup my iTunes onto my external hard drive and once it got to transferring that particular file, it crashed. This is incredibly frustrating as there is a lot of money's worth of music on my laptop and I really don't want to lose it. I've tried downloading a few different bits of software off the web (unlocker etc) to try and remove the file but they just crash as well.

Can someone please help me remove this file so I can backup my music, any help would be much appreciated.

I'm running windows 8, if you need any more info let me know, the file is question is a .wav file

Hello, I recently got access to a copy of windows 7 and wished to upgrade my windows xp (home) operating system.

The windows seven installation seemed to go fine and it said it was complete. The computer then restarted and it said the operating system was corrupt and that it should be repaired. So now when I start my PC it asks what operating system to run.. although I only have one real choice which is windows xp. If i try to load windows seven i either get an error message or it will keep restarting over and over.

Being a computer noob I stupidly installed windows seven to the same catchment as windows xp. And now i cant get rid of the error message at the boot screen.

Now i have tried booting from my windows xp CD to repair and it does not boot.. I tried booting from my windows seven CD and it does not respond...

I have tried deleting the windows seven boot path and now I cant choose windows seven but the error message still comes up.

Basically i want to completly get rid of windows seven and keep windows xp so that it starts automatically.

So can anyone help? It will be much appreciated.

I have several g-accounts. They are the only free site, that I am aware of, that provide 15 GB free data storage. I only use it for this (non-confidential data, e.g mp3, jpg, etc.). Much cheaper than a portable flash drive, yes? Thoughts/opinions/sage advice welcome.

- thank you

How long have you been using it? How do you like it? I just got a Laptop so with WiFi being available I'm considering storing some stuff online myself.

Edit: the other thing I wonder is can you have subfolders in the Drive folder? Or is it all just a mishmash of files? And is it totally free?

Hi guys just exhausted all my ideas on this so am coming to you for help.. I have an external hard drive which connects via usb, it connects and turns on and the computer even shows that it recognizes it (on all computer at my house) but there is no way to access what is in it, it doesn't appear in My Computer and it doesn't come up to autoplay this has only just recently happened before it would work fine and nothing has been changed so I don't know why it wont work anymore.

Thanks for all your help.

Is this a new and unused drive? If so, Windows must initialize it then create a partition. Do this with the Disk Management console. Run diskmgmt.msc

If it has been used and contains files, with which file system has it been formated?

Hi mate!

Of course it is possible, you have to plug your old drive to your machine and make sure that Master/Slave jumpers are set correctly to avoid conflicts. Your OS will identify the drive and then you will be able to access files stored in it. If you want to reformat it you can easily do that from inside the OS with no problems. There is no need to have an OS installed on that drive.

Hi guys i hope this is the right part of forum.

Anyway i have a spare machine that is now gathering dust and i am wanting to turn it into a storage device. Now it is not a problem to do with a platform installed like windows or linux, but i am wanting to make this storage device without any platform at all (total blank Hard drives). can this be done?

Now i know it is possible with teraboxes and things designed specifcally for that but how would i go about doing it to a standard machine?

i am also wanting this to be linked upto my home network.

hope some one can help.

I have a USB storage device that you place a hard drive in it then the usb plugs into the computer. The Hard drive & USB storage device is for desktop computer hard drives. I want to put the USB device in a laptop. Will a desktop computer size hard drive work in the laptop if I put it in the usb device?

btw: This laptop has no internal hard drive. The laptop is a Gateway Solo 9100. 150Mhz processor. 64MB of RAM.

Can I boot the computer from the USB hard drive if I put an OS on it?

See recent post "problems after using SanDisk flash drive" by me.
I have had a host of problems after using a flash drive on my brand new computer.
I'm no expert, but it's looking like it corrupted my sound card somehow. I am inprocess of trying to get it fixed, and have narrowed it down to my sound card and have it disabled so that my computer behaves.
When I have it enabled, none of my system games (like Spider Solitare) respond. They open and then freeze. Windows Media Player does the same thing. And, no sound.
Anyway, see my thread and see if any of the things I've gotten help with help you.

G'day newding, Welcome to TSF!

There are a couple of things to mention here...

Firstly, have you installed/uninstalled any software recently?

If the answer is yes have you tried a System Restore from your Start Menu to restore the computer to an earlier time?

Secondly, which version of Microsoft Office? are you using?

Please post back with this information;then, we will be in a better position to assist you.

Kind Regards,
