[BSOD] Lenovo Thinkpad T420

Q: [BSOD] Lenovo Thinkpad T420

Dear all,

I went through the different steps mentioned in "clean-up-factory-bloatware" article, apart from last point which consists of re-installing my machine! But still I have BSOD and it drives me crazy.

I attached the DM Log Collector results. Hope you'll be able to find what causes this.

Thanks for your help

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
use .trap on that value
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
kb will then show the corrected stack.

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

My pc was running well and I decided to reinstall windows but this time I have problem...I have windows 10 and my laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad T420  My power plan minimum and maximum processor state are both set to 100% and for some reason i can't change them, they are like stuck to 100%. Even when I try to restore my settings to default the maximum and minumum processor state will still remain at 100%. I want to change my minimum processor state to 5% and maximum to 80%. I did it everytime after reinstalling windows and this time it just don't work. My laptop is overheating a lot while I'm playing games or just watching videos. I already tried to reinstall windows for one more time and first thing I did was changing maximum processor state in power options but it didn't let me type other number except 100%.  To be more clear what is my problem, here is recording of it: Please help, much appreciate, Thank You!

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Has anyone found a way to successfully install intel wi-di on a t420 or t430 running windows 10? I have tried many driver combinations without success. From what I have read it seems that these machines used intel?s proprietary tech for wireless displays where the current gen is just miracast rebranded. Its seems intel is no longer developing for new operating systems for 4-year-old hardware.

I just bought a refurbished ThinkPad T420. A friend of mine said it had a good spec so I was looking forward to having a play around. Right from the minute I switched it on there was a problem. The touchpad and mouse are not working. The only way to use the mouse is via the track point (is that the right term?) and I hate it! It's way too fiddly. So I tried fn and F8... it doesn't work. I've tried rebooting and enabling the touchpad in the BIOS it doesn't work. I've deleted drivers. Still nothing. I've installed new drivers. Many tutorials say you can fix it using device manager, mouse etc. But the tab the recommend you choose is not there. I installed new drivers from synaptics and it says there is no synsptics device found. I am honestly going insane! Something that should be so simple and it's so awkward! Forgive me because I'm half asleep but I should mention when I first tried to fix it the tab in mouse properties that everyone says I should use (ultra something) well it was there. But when I tried to click any of the options on that tab I was kicked out and got an error messsge. Now that tab no longer appears. It's running on windows 10. I'm ready for launching it out the window. Help!

In this post I would like to share my recent discovery regarding T420 Adapter.  Two months ago after installing several updates from Windows 10, I noticed that my laptop has slowed down tremendously. It had problems even for loading web pages like facebook and youtube. So, I started looking for the problem. I reinstalled windows and flashed in fresh new Windows 10, but still the problem was there. Then changed my RAM but still the problem was there. Then I changed my Hard disk from ordinary one to Samsung SSD, but still the laptop's performance was only 1/100 of what it is capable of. Once, totally accidentally, I stared using my laptop on the battery and that all the problems dispappered. The laptop was working like brand new, opening up and running any apps as fast as it was doing originally. And that was when an idea strcuk intow my head that it could be the problem related to the adapter. Then I bought 90W adapter and bum, all the problems were solved and my laptop work perfectly fast as beofore.  When workng on 65W original adapter it was running always from 35% to 100% utilization rate and the speed of the processor was always stuck at 0.79 never changed.  Even when I am not dong anything and the laptop is idle utilization rate is 32% and speed is always 0.79.                      As for when working on Battery, utilizatio rate is changi... Hello, all.My T420 audio system has worked perfectly for years. But, starting in January 2018 the microphone mutes itself, no matter what I do with its settings. Sometimes the muting happens in a few seconds, sometimes after a few minutes. I can watch it happen in the microphone levels window. I suspect a Windows update or new version of Skype caused the problem. I have been unable to fic it. Neither Malwarebytes nor any Windows security scanning software see any issues. This is especially aggravating since I'm a software engineer used to fixing bugs. (Yes, I've watched the YouTube videos about this problem, to no avail.) Anybody have a fix for this?Cheers,Dave

Something absolubtely bizarre is happening with my mouse, and despite my efforts, I can't find any posts on google that match my issue.

About a month ago I spilled some coffee on my laptop. The laptop's built in mouse buttons stopped working shortly afterwards. I took my computer into the repair shop and had them install a brand new touchpad and mouse button set. Everything worked fine up until a couple of days ago.

First, my left click stopped working (on the laptop track pad). The next day, the right click stopped working. I could still left click using the touch pad and right click via Shift + F10. The following day I could no longer left click using the touchpad. I brought home a USB mouse today and plugged it in. The USB mouse worked great for a couple of hours, and then started failing. It will select some objects, and not others. It will left click for a few minutes, and then stop working all together. It will allow me to open new tabs in a brower, but not select other open tabs or the bar where you enter web addresses. It won't select anything off the task bar, including the windows start menu.

So far, I have uninstalled the computer's mouse drivers and re-installed them. I've rebooted several times. I've tried turning on the functionality that allows you to use your keyboard as a mouse, but that didn't work. I've tried different USB ports for the external mouse. I downloaded Lenovo's Solution Center tool and analyzed a... Read more

Hy!I've used my Thinkpad T420 battery charge mode with custom settings: Start charging when below 95% and Stop charging at 99%. Because the battery effectively has never charged full, it cause sudden capacity decreases (for example from 30% discharging to 7%). I got bored to this and changed to automatically optimize battery lifespan. I noticed that every full charge the "Full charge capacity" value decreases. I have charged it 5 times after this settings, and the remaining capacity looks like this: 57.10Wh, 57.05Wh, 57.00Wh, 56.95Wh, 56.85Wh. Is it normal? Is it possible that this setting will kill my battery?

I upgraded to Win 10 via Windows update.  All went well, everything worked fine, but I did later find out that Lenovo isn't supporting T420 with driver updates for Win 10.  While Windows 10 was still installed, I looked at the driver support page for the T420, Win 10 is not listed as an option in the drop down of OSs.  Accepting this, and not wanting to run into problems later down the road with future Win 10 updates, I rolled back to Win 7Pro.  Now I don't think I have a straight answer on whether the T420 actually is supported under Win 10 or not.  The first thing I did after rolling back was to go to the Lenovo driver support page.  Now it shows windows 10 in the drop down as a supported OS.  What's up with that?  I've looked in the forums and elswhere online and every indication is that the T320 is not officually supported.  Lenovo does not list it as supported.  But yet now Windows 10 drivers are listed for the T420, but only when I'm running Windows 7Pro, not when I'm running Windows 10.  I'm assuming that the website is autodetecting my current OS.  I can't make heads or tails of it.  I'd like to go back to Windows 10, but given the confilcing info from Lenovo...Anyone have any suggestions.

Hello! I have a Thinkpad T420 with Windows 7. When I try to update my Intel Graphics HD driver (version to the one from the Lenovo support website (version, I get the error message "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." The Intel page tells me that I either have the wrong driver (which should not be the issue because I got it from the Lenovo driver support page) or OS version (I went ahead and tried both the 32 and 64 bit driver, to no avail) or that I do not have Intel Graphics (but I do). Is my processor simply not supported by the current update anymore? For a few years I have been working with an HP Elitebook 8460p to which I connected an external drive, a Western Digital Element 2042. Working just fine. A few months ago I purchased a Thinkpad T420 and I thought that connecting the external drive would be a piece of cake but unfortunately no. So far I have been been enable to do so and I can't figure out why. When booting the drive doesn't show up in the drive's list.
I have been trying just about each port on my Thinkpad and none worked, the actual cable and port seem to work as the light at the back of the drive are on.

I know for a fact that the drive works, I just fired off my HP Elitebook 8460p again to make sure it was indeed still alive and it is fine. I can see it on my HP's boot menu and in the HP's disk management details. But not on my Thinkpad T420.

I used an enclosure with another drive to make sure the USB ports on my Thinkpad T420 are ok and this works fine. I also changed the drive's letters.

If the ports on the Thinkpad is fine if the external drive is fine, why then my external drive is not recognized by my T420 thru the USB port ?

It is probably just not getting a drive letter and you need to give it one are after initializing it. Does disk management see it?

Thinkpad T420 Intermittent Freezing / Lockup My Thinkpad T420 keeps intermittently permanently freezing / locking up. However it seems that anything that uses hardware acceleration makes the system suddenly lockup.  For instance, boot into Windows 7 and open Chrome Browser play a YouTube Video and it will lock up or enable the Windows Areo Theme and try looking at the event manager will also make the system permanently lock-up.  Here is the troubleshooting that I have tried so far: Fresh OS installation from the recovery partition and update using Lenovo System Recovery but problem still persists. ( includes updated BIOS )Run Lenovo Diagnostics ( 20 times pass over ) and no fault reported. ( no test in Diagnostics for CPU Graphics )Tried a known good harddrive and loaded Windows 7 and applied Lenovo System update and problem still persists.Tried using a known good memory module ( Lenovo T420 memory module ) tested separately in each memory bank, the problem still persists.Used the machine with out the Battery, using just power cord and problem persisted.Used the machine with just the battery and the problem still persisted.Using the machine with Battery connected plus power adapter and problem persists.Removed the DVD drive and the problem persisted.Removed the Wifi Card and the problem still persisted. Removed the 3GS card and problem still persisted.Swapped over another keyboard from another Thinkpad T420 and problem still persis... Hello,The Bluetooth indicator light on my Thinkpad T420 is stuck in the on position regardless of if I have bluetooth on or off. This was never an issue until I recently installed a fresh version of Windows 10 on a new SSD. I just want to know how to either:1. fix this problem so that the light works as it is supposed to function, OR 2. disable the Bluetooth indicator entirely so that it doesn't remain on forever. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi, I have recently bought a thinkpad T420 and really like it but I have a problem with headphones not working at all :-( When I plug in the headphones nothing happens at all, audio still plays via speakers. I have tried to uninstall and install drivers for the audio, in Device manager under Sound current audio device driver is Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD - unfortunately audio only plays via speakers. I have also updated other drivers to make sure it is all up to date, also updated bios.Under Sound tab in settings in the playback deviced only Speakers are listed, no headphone.... Don't know what else to do....? I bought this laptop especially for it being semi-portable so I can travel with it but having no headphone option ( on a train... ) may not be a good idea. Any solutions will be much appreciated.  Thanks, Pav

So I have a T420 I5-2520M no dgpu, and its fan sometimes work and sometimes doesn't, what I mean is when I try booting it and if the fan didnt spin, it wont spin at all as in 0rpm, even at maximum load it wont spin, even manually at TPFANCONTROLL it wont spin, so I have to trial and error on boot until it spins, on and off until it boot while the fan spins, My hypothesis is the power? or the battery it self?? cause it saying that I should consider replacing the battery, also because when Im using SSD, the fan works fine, but when I use hdd the problem happens, #2 temps, temps are always above 60C even idle and above 90C at load, 93-97, I already repasted cleaned the fan, I don't know what else I need to do, but it doesn't shutdown, when staying at like 90+ C, like when I play games it stays at 96-98C but it doesnt shutdown or anything fail because of overheating, is this normal, I know its not but is it? sometimes it even reachezs 100CAANOTHER THING: Should the fan pull air from outside or push the air from inside, cause when I try to put my hand on the exhayst there\es little to no air coming out, even at max rpm.

Hi All, I?ve recently bought a new T420 Thinkpad and I?m having a similar problem to that reported by others here, namely that my wireless internet keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every minute or so.  This is a problem because it interrupts whatever application I am using (such as Word or email) so it stops working for a few seconds.  In fact it?s making the Thinkpad virtually unusable, as the only way I can type in Word is to use the physical ?wireless off? switch. I have tried the remedies already published here but they either don?t work or refer to options I don?t have on my machine. Things I have tried:-      1.  ?Launch ThinkVantage Power Manager -> Switch to Advanced Mode ->Click Advanced Settings -> Scroll down and           set ?Maximum Performance? in ?Wireless Adapter  Settings? -> press OK.? But on my T420 in ThinkVantage Power Manager, under Advanced Settings, there is no option setting Maximum Power or any other  ?Wireless Adapter Setting?.      2.  ?Go to Device Manager, select your Wifi card -> go to Properties ? and set ?Transmit Power? to maximum, and          ?Roaming aggressiveness? to lowest setting.? I have done this for my Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205, but with no effect on the problem.... T420, upgraded to Windows 10 Pro via a clean install ... Works great ... had to find Conexant audio drivers so the audio would work while in the docking station ... Only remaining issues are that: a)The Bluetooth light below the LCD is always on, even when I've turned off the Bluetooth interface in the W10 settings. b)The special Thinkpad key combinations (like FN+F5 to turn the wireless off or on) don't work. Any suggestions about what software or driver installs to try?

You can use the following utility to control the bluetooth light on T420 (and other Thinkpads): Thinkpad Fan Control (TFC)http://www.tpfancontrol.com Disable the light via the context menu of the symbol. The bluetooth control via Windows system tray is deactivated after installing TFC. Obviously, this utility is normally used for other purposes... Thorsten

Hello and welcome,
The drivers should be available at the EOL site:
Scratch that.  They're still available on the regular support site:
The upper bar that says "Product Home" is a drop-down. Click it and select "Drivers and Software".

N00b here. Installed Linux Mint on my lenovo thinkpad T420 a few weeks ago but could not boot into Linux. Eventually tried using Rescataux Beta on a usb. First I used the easy UEFI repair, which didn't work, so next I tried boot-repair. This worked, I could get into the OS. However, now I can't get into the bios, it just displays a black screen when I press F1 during loading. I tried doing a bios update, which appeared to go fine, but this didn't resolve the problem. I have no idea about what boot-repair does so I don't know where to look for a fix. Before I did boot-repair, I could get into BIOS but not Linux, afterwards, I could get into Linux but not into BIOS. Based on other posts, I've taken out the battery, and held the power button down for 30 seconds, and I've also sent @someotherguy a PM as I've seen suggested in other posts, but had no response.   # dmidecode 3.0

Hi and welcome to SF!

This is a pretty common issue with window 7. One of the thing I would like you to try is to do a system file check:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You have some out of date driver:

Tppwr32v Tppwr32v.sys Thu Jun 12 21:27:57 2008 (4851DB2D)
ibmpmdrv ibmpmdrv.sys Thu May 31 04:52:39 2007 (465E9AE7)
smiif32 smiif32.sys Mon May 12 04:01:06 2008 (48280752)
psadd psadd.sys Mon Feb 19 12:56:45 2007 (45D9F2ED)
The first 2 drivers are belonged to Lenovo thinkpad Power manager drivers. Please download a newest version and install. I used to do that with my computer and it fixed the BSODs.

The 3rd driver I listed is belonged to SMI Driver for Lenovo system and the last one is belonged to Lenovo Parties Service Access Device Driver (SMBIOS). It can be an utility from Lenovo, take your time and find it on the lenovo driver website.

If none of the option work, I would go for a repair install
Here is one of the thread I used to work on, looks exactly the same as yours

HiT420 upgraded to Win 10 and 8MB RAM installed. When I go to Shop/support/Tech Support (update drivers etc); detect my product, it comes up with the 'old' stuff ie Windows 7 64bit and the old 2MB RAM etc.  This is causing me great confusion because I am unsure about downloading updates that do not reflect my current setup with Win 10, 8MB RAM etc. Someone (from Microsoft Community) who knows more about this than me suggests the following: and I quote: "According to the screenshots, and just as you've initially stated, it shows that your system is being detected as Windows 7.  However, this will also show if the machine was manufactured originally with a Windows 7 installed.  This would mean that the specifics of the machine on the serve page is not being detected, or it does not need to detect the machine at all.  If this perception is correct, what shows up is the default or how the manufacturer produced their machine.  Perhaps, for a reason that the machine was manufactured before the launch of Windows 10. It would be the best idea to contact the manufacture about downloading the drivers that will be compatible with Windows 10, and to suggest them that an update on their page will be helpful for the users." Additionally:- Service Bridge is running on my machine.Solution Centre reports no alerts.Lenovo System Update Centre reports no updates found.Windows updates are functioning n... This laptop has been driving me crazy with the number of BSOD's encountered.  I receive at least 1 per week but often three to four over the last 4 months or so.
I have updated all of the drivers as well as the BIOS from the Lenovo site but the frequency of these crashes has not diminished at all.  I know of quite a few friends that have this same model and they are not reporting these kind of issues.  Just wondering if anyone can guide me to what I might try next.
Below please find the lising of the crashes I have had.  The minidump files are here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3064584/Minidump.zip

The ThinkPad Multiple Monitor Configurations pdf (LINK) says the DVI port  on thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3 only support up to 1920x1200, but I would like to connect the DVI-D port to a external monitor with 2560x1600 resolution.  Will it work?  I am planning to buy a T420 with a discrete Nvidia Optimus video card and a mini dock series 3.  Yes, I can't use the display port because the external monitor only have DVI-D port.  I knew that the DVI-D port is able to support 2560x1600 resolution as long as the video card support it, I don't understand why the DVI-D port on the thinkpad mini dock series 3 can only support  up to 1920x1200 even though the Nvidia Optimus Technology is powful enough. Please share your experience and suggestions.  thanks.

SAMSUN SSD EVO 850 (as OS disk in a brocket inserted instead of DVD ROM)2. WD HDD 320GB 7200 rpmI have worked for several mounts with this system perfectly and there was no problem. Newly, a bad problem has been appeared: when I put the system to sleep for a prolonged, the system won't wake up (the power LED flashing, Bluetooth LED and CPU fan being on). After force shutdown, in the boot process BSD error occurs and after several restart, finally Windows will boot. The BSD occurs when I turn on the laptop after a prolonged shutdown or hibernate also. I emphasize that the problem occurs when sleep conditions (or being turned off or hibernated) is for a long time (more than an hour) and in short time periods, there is no error!!!! The computer restart command works properly (shutting down via the Windows and booting again). I tried several solutions from internet search as followed without permanent success!1. Check disk (with /f and /r flags)2. sfc /scannow3. Power management modifications (disabling hybrid sleep, disabling HDD turn off, disabling hibernation, disabling wake up timer)4.
