L440 BIOS not updating

Q: L440 BIOS not updating

Hi everyone, I have quite a few L440's that will not update to the latest BIOS. At first I thought the BIOS wasn't updating only for machines that were at versions 1.81 and 1.82 however now i'm seeing some machines that are upgrading from those versions without an issue. Seems to be happening with Windows 7 and 10. symptoms:Execute BIOS update via winuptp.exe or via command line winuptp.exe.Machine asks if i want to update the BIOS i select yes. It informs me the machine will reboot. Machine reboots however after the Lenovo screen I do not get the BIOS is flashing screen it just reboots to windows. Troubleshooting preformed:- Full shut down of machine.- Updated all drivers via system update app - I have not tried using a bootable CD as I need to do most of these remotly. below is the log from WINUPTP.log-------[2018/12/19 16:1:1]OS = Windows 7 32bitDriver Loading....DoneSystem BIOS Version -> J4ET81WWApplying BIOS Version -> J4ET93WWBIOS Flashing....BIOS Flash completed.[2018/12/20 10:45:19]OS = Windows 7 32bitDriver Loading....DoneSystem BIOS Version -> J4ET81WWApplying BIOS Version -> J4ET93WWBIOS Flashing....BIOS Flash completed.[2018/12/21 16:18:4]OS = Windows 7 32bitDriver Loading....DoneSystem BIOS Version -> J4ET81WWApplying BIOS Version -> J4ET93WWBIOS Flashing....BIOS Flash completed.------

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all. Levenovo solutions center recently installed the latest version of the bios v1.89 (25 Sep 2017) on my L440 (Win7Pro, 64bit). Right since the reboot after the bios update, the Intel graphics driver does not work anymore. I had to uninstall it in Windows Safe Mode and I am now running my laptop with the standard windows driver, having no access to the Sub-D interface nor to the Display Port. The only thing I can do is to enter the bios setup and switch between the notebook display and the external sub-d interface as primary screen. This enables me at least to connect a larger screen to the sub-d connector for working, but then I cannot use the notebook screen. I tried to re-install older versions of the bios. But this fails with a 'incompatibility' message.  I also re-set windows to a previous setup point (to before the lenovo solutions center update action). But this does not help, indicating that it is really a bios issue (which cannot be made undone). Please, can you give me advice on how to install an older version of the bios? This seems to be the only chance to get my Intel graphics working again. Cheers,Patric.

Hello, I have a problem with setting a custom splashscreen when booting my Thinkpad L440 in UEFI mode. The BIOS I am using is version 1.86 and model L440 obtainable from here http://support.lenovo.com/no/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l44... as per the requirements I have made the images 16 colours palette (4bpp), both images adhere to the standards logo1 legacy boot (640X480) and logo2 UEFI boot (1366X768) where I used .gif format. The problem is that only the legacy boot screen splash actually gets used, but the UEFI boot splash image (logo2) does not appear at all. Everything that happens is that you get a completely black boot screen with only the (press enter to interrupt boot... ) option. I have tried many different pictures, and different formats but arrived to the conclusion that it is broken.  Trying to boot Windows with broken custom splash screen, I get a BSOD with the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL  and can't boot into Windows 8.1. This makes me believe that something is not working properly, and not only does setting a custom splash screen on UEFI boot not actually show my bootscreen, it could have damaged some UEFI boot drivers so that Windows is unable to start properly. Maybe the tool is outdated and did not save the splash screen correctly? Upon re-flashing the BIOS using winuptp.exe it asked me if I wanted to keep my custom splash screen, and when I hit yes it simply crashed. &nb... As the title says. 3 year old laptop that otherwise is still great, now useless due to Lenovo not updating the bios and preventing me from updating windows which made adobe illustrator and photoshop stop working, can't download codecs, etc. Windows support said until lenovo updates the bios I'm out of luck and have a useless machine. I can browse the internet and use apps that haven't tried to update... Lenovo was a great machine. I was a big fan. Due to lack of support for older machines and this ridiculous issue I would never recommend any business professional like me to purchase one. To have it literally just stop working one day due to lack of software upkeep on lenovo is just silly. Is this how you make people buy new computers? It worked, except I'm going to go to best buy and ask them to sell me a machine that won't stop suddenly due to the manufacturer not keeping it up to date. For the record this is the second time this has happened and lenovo updated a few weeks later. I use this for work and can not deal with my apps not working for weeks while I wait for lenovo to roll out updates... SO, dear Lenovo, update the bios of the y50-70, serial: CB36361936

A:My y50-70 is now useless due to lenovo not updating bios preventing me from updating windows.

What version of Windows are you running right now, what version are you trying to update to, and what error are you getting? Per Lenovo (see link below), that model is compatible with Windows 10 1809, but has not yet been certified for Microsoft's just released May 1903 update. Lenovo devices tested for Windows 10 version 1809https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht507291 When Microsoft makes major OS updates, the manufactures of hardware devices in your system such as like Intel, Synaptics and Realteck etc. may need to provide updated drivers to computer manufacturers such as Lenovo etc. so their hardware will work properly.  Windows 10 version 1903 is just now rolling out, so I cannot believe that Adobe is requiring version 1903 for codec updates etc.    I also find it hard to believe that it is a BIOS issue, and would guess that most likely Microsoft is blowing you off with that excuse, because there are many Y50-70 systems running Windows 10 already using the old BIOS. Windows 10 Drivers page for Lenovo Y50-70https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-y-series-laptops/y50-70-note...    Cheers,

hi there, i am fixing a friends old computer and the hdd was stuffed so i got a new maxtor diamondmax 9 for it. although once installing it i found out that it would only run in udma2 mode (checked it in another computer and it ran at full udma6)
so i suspect that the current bios cannot support udma5 or 6, so i am looking for a bios upgrade for it.
the bios string is 6A69RPRDC-00, the number on the actual motherboard is 35-C960-00-05
thanks for any help, i am really hoping i can make this board work at udma5 at least and not have to settle for udma2.
thanks again

WOW..............

Old Machines.....(just like me... but can still perform to the max lol)

I your Bios has the option of udma up to 6 then generally the bios supports the Mode! and your problem is that the HDD does not support the mode (cant remember if you said it does).

You are probably using wrong criteria for bios upgrade search.
Try WWW.driverguide,com

You Need the MB's Manufacturers Name or at least the MB Chipset and bios Manufacturers Name as well. go to the Computers muanufacturers website (you probably done that already) and search model.

otherwise Download a System info utility from Tech Spot, I use SiSoft Sandra or AIDA32.. (sandra might cause bluescreen on older machines).. Aida problably will have link direct to bios update site. hope this was of some help

You only choose one and that is usually the latest one.

That said, are you having a problem that you hope the BIOS update will fix? If not, see the warning:

"Warning:
Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction."

ocir, your motherboard site shows that the latest bios is:
Sabertooth X58 1304 BIOS
2011.09.26 update

I would download the update and most bios system updates have a choice to accomplis from booting a disk
or from the Windows OS.
Choose which you want to do,

I have done this lots of times, mostly from Dell but also intel and asus.

Hi,
its a bit lengthy and might not seem a really general question; but I guess Im only asking for basic understanding here:

Im occasionally getting the error 13 :
: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

I thought I would do a bios update. I googled it and found this,
when I go to the manufacturer website (here) , I cant see any batch file that the manual mentions, instead there is exe files to updating the version of bios. when i download and run them, I get the error saying that the file didnt install properly and if i want to redo it with the recommended setting. I tried checking the version of the bios externally with a software and it seemed its still the previous version. I tried reinstalling the update using the new settings, same old same old.
note: in the sony website it says:
This BIOS update must be installed before upgrading to Microsoft? Windows Vista? operating system. ( the computer was shipped in xp)
I have missed it.
anything I can do?

cheers,
Shahab

I've been trying to update my BIOS as I realised how old the driver is, but I useless, as they tell me to download programs that cost and I just cannot be bothered to go through all that.

Could anyone give me a link to where I can just download an update please?

A:Updating my BIOS

Try here, this is the driver page for your computer model number listed in your specs. Notice the OS says Vista but if its a BIOS update the only relevance of the OS is weather the flash utility will run in Windows 7. All the other drivers listed are for Vista. This could be the correct BIOS for your machine but a second opinion would be most welcome to confirm.

P.S Run at your own risk as we all know the risks of incorrect BIOS updates. Check the motherboard show to be P5LP-LE before flashing.

I hope I'm posting appropriately. I'll try to be brief.

I've been having problems with my monitor lately. Squiggly lines appear around the lower half of the monitor and garble the image. Messing with the degauss and refresh rate seem to have no effect. The effect seems to be random, and from what I have read I assume it's just dying, but there is something troubling me. I ran the troubleshooter (which I don't think I've ever really done) and got to the point where it said I should update my BIOS. When I first had this computer assembled in 2k2, I had a problem which ended up being the BIOS and the folks that put it together updated it and its been that long since its been done. I've since installed a new video card and updated windows a fair amount in that time.

I'm trying not to be too verbose, but I want any helpers that may come my way to have as much info about my situation as possible...

Anyway, whether or not this is the problem with my monitor may not be important. If the monitor is just dying out I probably still need to update don't I? I've read a bit about it and I've downloaded what I assume is the most recent update for my BIOS and the (again, assuming) appropriate "flash" thingy. However, I'm more than a little apprehensive about attempting this on my own without some input.

The folks here helped me out immensely a while back with a browser hijack and the first forum I though of to come to with th... Read more

A:Updating BIOS

My thoughts:
1. The BIOS has been there since 2002, the squiggly lines appeared recently. ergo the BIOS has nothing to do with the squiggly lines.

2. The windows troubleshooters are as useful as tits on a bull.

3. If you are not experienced with BIOS upgrades be warned you can get into real trouble if anything goes wrong - possibly to the extent your PC never works again.

4. The majority of people NEVER upgrade their BIOS and their computers still seem to work OK.

Have a look at the download site where you get v1010 and see what the update is supposed to fix. Unless it says "fixes squiggly line problem" (and I'll bet good money it doesn't) it's not going to help you.

Let us know what kind of monitor and what kind of display card you have, because i think you have a hardware problem.

Unless the BIOS update corrects a problem that you're having, then I wopuld leave well alone. These updates are usually to enable the motherboard to support newer hardware such as processors. Since yours is a laptop, you wouldn't be able to upgrade anyway, so I would leave it as it is.

Hello

Probably a very naive question but I'm wondering how I can update my BIOS (if an update appears) when my PC doesn't have a floppy (A drive? Most of the accounts I've read on the website for the motherboard (ASUSTek) are confusing and involve copying a file onto a floppy for reboot.

Is there another (simpler) way?

Thanks

A:Updating Bios

Most new machines have updaters that run in Windows. If the file needs to installed from DOS, like a floppy, it can be installed from a bootable CD that boots into DOS, like the Win98 Boot CD Image that has had the BIOS files injected into its image.

Hi i have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it. Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts are? I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness.
and if i apply these updates do i need to do both updates or just apply the current one, any opinions would be greatfully received.

A:Updating the BIOS

Bios updates are mutually exclusive (ie, you can only have one installed). I believe that most bios updates are cumulative so if you choose the newest one you should get both of these issues addressed.

Hey, my laptop has been giving me some pain recently with BSODs when exiting Source games. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742ZG
OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86
CPU Intel Pentium P6100
Motherboard Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series
Memory 3 GB DDR3
Graphics Card(s) NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M

LE: Also, while we're on the subject, do you have any good reads on BIOS updating and when it should be done? It's unexplored territory for me

A:Need help updating BIOS

Hey, first thing you need to do is type msinfo32 in the Start button search/run box. In the window that opens, look up the field Bios version/date and tell us what exactly you see there. This tells you the version number and date of the currently installed bios. By knowing this it can be determined whether an update is actually applicable.

Bios updating used to be a dangerous business in the earlier days but with better and more user friendly tools its quite OK, as long as you take certain precautions. However, do remember that no matter you do everything right, theres a very small chance that your mobo can get bricked, so the responsibility is all yours.

Not trying to frighten you, just need to be careful and be prepared.

I recently put in a new motherboard, a new cpu, and new ram. the computer POST is fine but when it gets to the load windows screen, it just reboots. there is no error, just flashes to a blue screen, then restarts the computer and when it restarts it comes to the screen asking me to choose between restarting in last known good configuration, or in 3 different safe mode options. all of them just repete the process. i tried reinstalling the windows from the boot cd and it reinstalled it fine with no errors, but when it restarts the computer it still wont get passed the load screen. Someone sugested that maybe i have to update my BIOS becase of the new motherboard and new cpu. can someone please explain why that might be, what the symtems are of needing a BIOS update, and why it would help me? im just looking for some clarification before i run such a risky procedure. thank you, kevin

I  recently acquired a gem of ancient tech-- it is a used hp envy 17-1191nr--  a few changes from stock, however is that it has a new 250GB SSD, 16GB of RAM, and is running windows 10... but one small problem...I think it needs a BIOS update because of the behavior it has when I leave it in sleep mode, it doesn't like to wake up.I have a habit of leaving it asleep but the boot from shut off is not long at all (about 15 seconds or less) What happens is that the keyboard backlight comes on and it seems to be trying to wake up but fails and I think the speakers make a slight pop noise, and then it keeps repeating thatMy 'fix' is to remove battery and power and then re-insert and it starts up again, no problem.Reading on-- I read that it would likely be either the BIOS or the battery. Tonight I did a test with a spare battery and same thing happens.. my co-worker and he said it may be the BIOS too.  My other concern is seeing that the date on my BIOS is also from 2010 (F.1B) and the newer one from HP's website is F.1D from 2011... and that my BIOS is booting from Legacy rather than UEFI.... I'd like to know how to update the BIOS, because I tried changing the BIOS boot order and it doesn't seem to work to get it to boot to CD or USB, when I attempted to change the order, it just tells me to remove CD or USB and press any key to boot normally. This is my system info, if anyone knows what I need to do... I don't plan to jump the gun here and risk brick... Read more

Hey everyone how do i install my latest bios from my manufacture, i cant get the flash bios to work?!!? heres a link to my mobo. The flash thing to install bios is like a comand promp but it starts then closes itself! what can this be? thankyou in advance

A:Need Help Updating BIOS

be extremely careful when updating the BIOS. Not completing the BIOS flash will render your motherboard a paperweight. You will then have to send it in to get the BIOS reburned on the EPROM.

Most manufactuers have explicit instructions on their websites for updating BIOS files. There is a dos file to do this usually. BIOS updates cannot be done through windows. Use your floppy drive.

basically you type the name of your flash program, followed by the name of the new BIOS file.

LET IT RUN ITS FULL COURSE. DO NOT INTERRUPT.

also SAVE your OLD BIOS. Most BIOS flash programs have this option. Save it to another floppy disk. You might need it if you run into problems.

I am having problems using a 200gb drive with an older (2002) gateway. I installed the HD and ran fine for a few months, then I got the the disk read error. I used old drive to load windows and reformatted the 200gb drive, and the it worked fine for another couple months.
I have changed IDE cables and tried everything else but updating bios. So I am currently trying to update the bios with no luck.

My bios readout is as follows
bios rev PT84510A.15A.0005.PO3.0203061931 DATE 03/06/02

I went to gateway website and entered my serial number for the update and found the update for 12/2002, not that current. But i tried it and follwed the directions exactly. the floppy would not work, i got the nonsystem disk error.

Any suggestions for properly updating my bios?

I hope this is the right area to post my topic in but I have a problem

I Need help with updating my BIOS but don't know where to go, or what to do.

I don't want firmware from ESupport because they charge $40.00 an upgrade and I can't afford to upgrade my BIOS, and keep upgrading

I use a Soyo computer

This is what my BIOS agent said:

Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

03/08/2002-8361-686B-6A6LNS2AC-00

K7VEMPRO-2CA4

VIA 82C3112 rev 0

A:I need help with updating my BIOS?

You go to the Soyo website and download the BIOS for your exact model of motherboard (looks like a SY-K7VEM Pro). Soyo also provides instructions how to actually flash the BIOS.

Do you really have to upate your BIOS? One false step and your motherboard may become a useless slab with colorful bits on it.

The file is on your floppy. Just look at the contents with the dir command or browse the thing in Windows or whatever.
