Q: Issues with Thunderbolt and external displays on T480s

Hi everyone!I recently purchased a T480s with the following specs:- i7 8550u- MX150 Graphics- 16GB of RAM- WQHD Display I am running a Setup with the following Displays: internal Display @ WQHD, external Display 1 @ WQHD, external Display 2 @ FHD.Everything works perfectly fine, if I connect External Display 1 via a Thunderbolt Dock and DisplayPort and External Display 2 via HDMI directly. The problem I encounter is the following:I have some "small Adapters" for Thunderbolt -> HDMI or Display Port. They used to work fine until yesterday, now all adapters, except for one (USB C -> HDMI, USB and USB-C) have stopped working. All I get is a message stating that there is a malfunctioning USB device.Funny part: All adapters work fine on a Dell XPS15, Lenovo MIIX 510 Tab, and so on. Whats the problem? I already tried System Restore to a few days ago, did not help... Thanks,Jakob

Preferred Solution: Issues with Thunderbolt and external displays on T480s

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have a Lenovo T480S running Linux and am trying to connect two external monitors without the use of a doc station. Since I cannot use both HDMI and USB-C ports at the same time as described in the documentation: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/pubs/t480s/html_en/index_en.html#Using_an_external_display_(topic... I connected as following : The first display is connected via HDMI to the HDMI port and is working without any problems. The second display is connected to the  the USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 compatible) port, using an USB-C to HDMI cable like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V5JK36/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  But the second monitor does not work, even with the HDMI port not in use. Any pointers on how to connect two displays at the same time to the T480S without a doc ? Is that even supported ? Thanks and best regards,MMV.

I'm trying to figure out on how to get a working setup where the T480s (20L7001UMX) is connected to a Pro Docking station 40AH0135EU.  The laptop has only the built-in GPU from Intel. What I would like is to have both the built-in display and two external displays. But my issue is that once I hopen up the laptop, one of the external displays go dead. Is this a feature as it should or am I missing something?

Hi, I am looking to buy a t480, t480s or X1 carbon, I am now deciding which one to get. I was hoping to use the laptop with 2 asus MB16AC USB screens, so a screen that takes power from the USB-C port and uses DisplayPort? Alt Mode for USB Type-C? to connect to the display without any drivers. Would this work on the X1 if I use the 2 Thunderbolt ports?Would this work on the t480/t480s if I use the Thunderbolt port and USB-C / Charging port? I know the screen can install a displaylink driver if it's can't connect through DisplayPort? Alt Mode for USB Type-C?, but I don't want to use the driver,m I only want to connect through the native connection. Thanks!Gianni

Dear All, I am trying to use thunderbolt C to connect to two external monitors for a Lenovo T480s laptop. To do that, I used a Wavlink Thunderbolt C to dual display (HDMI) adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Wavlink-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Adapter-Converter/dp/B07CLLX6XS). While the adapter detects one of the monitor and works, it is unable to show the second monitor. The problem is that it detects only one monitor and cannot display in both of them. After reading several posts here, I disabled thunderbolt security from boot menu, restarted the laptop several times with and without the adapter connected. However, nothing seems to work !! Please suggest a possible solution and please let me know what will be the best low budget dual display dock/adapter for Lenovo T480s. Thanks!!Samik

I recently received a ThinkPad T480s for my work PC and a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I'm loving the laptop, but the dock is having some troubles. I'm worried either the dock is bad or worse, the laptop's Thunderbolt hardware is bad. The dock will cut out and appear to crash on certain occasions. I'm still trying to experiment with the triggers. I'm not 100% sure, but it appears that while I'm using it everything works fine - so long as I keep the laptop awake. It's when the ThinkPad goes to sleep or I leave my desk for a long enough time that the screens will have appeared to drop out. Or after the laptop has gone to sleep and I wake it up, then a few minutes later the dock crashes. For the most part the issue resolves itself once the dock power cycles and the displays come back up, but the last time this happened the screen was frozen and I had to do a hard shutdown of the laptop by holding the power button. My dock is pretty heavily loaded. It has the following peripherals attached: 2 DVI monitors with DVI to DisplayPort converterr connected to the dock1 VGA monitorEthernet connectionKeyboard USBMouse USBAudio OutAll monitors plus the docking powersupply are connected to the same powerstrip. The closest post resembling my issue is this one: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Displays-Options-and-Accessories/Thunderbolt-3-Dock-crashes-and-emits-c... But it doesn't appear to have been fully solved. I've updated the ThinkPad's Thunderbolt drivers and firm... Hello,

I am looking for help, as I have been having some resolution issues with my extended monitors for quite some time.  There are a large number of problems that range from BSODing shortly after re-connecting my docked monitors on a regular basis to having constant annoyances with sizes on screen.  I have tried and searched for hours and attempted every applicable resolution, but I haven't found a correct solution.  While I would love to resolve problems with resolution, the BSODs after re-docking are my primary problem.

BSOD after re-connecting my laptop to either docks (takes about 15-20 minutes and gives multiple error messages)
Very inconsistent font sizes and sizes associated with Windows and file explorer

Things I have tried/notice:

Updated drivers, BIOS, firmware, software, etc.
Ran the various Windows commands to check for errors (sfc /scannow, dism, etc.)
Swapped wires and re-seated connections
Adjusted refresh rate on external monitors to 59 and 60 hz
Adjusted resolution on primary monitor to 1920x1080 to match both external monitors (while this is an undesirable solution, it did help some problems and helped address many of the sizing problems, especially with file explorer)

I'm trying to setup three external screens configuration and stumbled upon the following. I have 3 screens: 1. 4k (3840x2160) 60Hz2. 2560x1600 60Hz3. 1920x1200 60Hz I was hoping to use all possible outputs on the laptop (2 USB-C and HDMI), but apparently you can't do that - you can pick only two out of those three. I also tried using USB-C docking station, and again - it limits resolution to 1200p, which is not enough (4K display via USB-C, docking station via second USB-C and two screens 1200p and 1600p via docking station, the latter gets resolution only up to 1200p). So, I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Thunderbolt-DisplayPort-Compatible/dp/B01DYFI1OE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=....It's a Thunderbolt 3 splitter to two Display Port outputs, claiming to support two screens 4K at 60Hz. And it looks like laptop has Thunderbolt 3 ouput. So, will it support all my screens with full resolutions using that splitter? Again, I envision configuration to be:1. 4K display via 1st USB-C (this will be a miniDP adapter with power)2. Splitter via second (Thunderbolt 3), and two other screens (1920x1200 & 2560x1600) connected using that splitter. Will that work? Thanks,Yury

Hi all!! I'm trying to determine if I can utilize 3 external monitors in addition to the laptop screen. I have a T480s with a thinkpad USB - C Dock and my current setup is: - DP to DVI adapter from docking station (for one external monitor)- VGA from docking station (for one external monitor)- Built in laptop screen This works perfect but I'm trying to get a 3rd monitor to work as well. I have a HDMI to VGA adapter that I have tried from the laptop to the 3rd external monitor. It doesn't work. If I unhook the VGA from the dock (one of other monitors), the 3rd monitor will work as expected. It seems trying a 2nd VGA is causing the issue. The 3 monitors I have only have VGA and DVI. I'm thinking about buying either a USB C to DVI/VGA adapter OR a HDMI to DVI adapter but before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if this will work. Sorry for the long message and thanks in advance to anyone that can help! Thanks,

So the trackpoint on my T480s is having this really annoying drift. When I use it heavily and release my finger it drifts for a few seconds in one direction and then it stops. During these 5 seconds or so I'm completely unable to use the touchpad so it can get really annoying sometimes. Other issue I'm having is the middle trackpoint button (the one to scroll) requires more activation pressure than it should. Even after it "clicks" I still have to press it harder for it to actually register. Latest one is poor dim backlit. My T450s and my Macbook Pro have much, much brighter keyboard lightning.  My keyboard manufacturer is Chicony. I already requested a replacement from Lenovo, this new unit is also manufactured by Chicony and its experiencing the exact same issues.

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode.  How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

A:T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

Hello, So - the problem appears when you are trying to use external screen which one is connected to the docking station (there is only two DisPlay ports and no others dedicated to monitors). When you connect it first time - it's ok. But when you trying to un-dock and dock again - external screen says "no input" and goes down. In other words - external screen is not working. The same issue is described over there:https://support.lenovo.com/lt/en/solutions/ht081248 Mine docking station type is 40AH, but anyway, I tried to run ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W firmware update - but update says "the firmware you are trying to install is older than the version already installed. My Docking Station: Power adapter is 135W. All drivers are up to date. Btw - I have many of those docking stations with machines. For some of them everything is fine. But seems the problem is with docking station. I have two docking stations on my desk right now. And my computer on one is working fine, but with other on - not. So, it's clear that the problem is with the docking station.

Anyone owns a P series Thinkpad and can comment on eGPU support? I wasn't able to find any certification on Intel's website or information on Lenovo's website.

A:P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

I don't think I've read where anybody's actually received a real P50/P70 in their hands yet from a real live purchase.  My own US order for a P70 was placed with Lenovo online last Wednesday night and confirmed by Lenovo last Thursday, but shipment is speculated at no earlier than 10-12 business days.

So I don't think you're going to get any firsthand feedback from anybody until maybe January.

But who'd really buy a P50/P70 with plans for an external GPU?  The graphics upgrades on the P70 are pricey, but certainly seem "adequate".

What is your plan?  Why do you want/need an external graphics capability?

Hello everyone, I was wondering if the Thinkpad P50 will support external  graphics cards via Thunderbolt 3. One product that is available for preorder right now ist the Razer Core which would allow to hook up any GPU with PCIe 3.0 4x speed (but there are several other TB3 egpu enclosures anounced). Razer confirmed that the Core will no prevent other manufacturers from using it but that they might need to do some work on bios and software. I'm a little worried that the P50 might whitelist only some divices over TB3 (as we have seen before with some of the "normal" PCIe slots). Has anybody evidence that it will (not) work, or even has a setup like this currently working? A response, if something like this will be supported, from Lenovo staff would be greatly appreciated. Why would you want this?Spoiler (Highlight to read)Well, the P50 has a formfactor that is still portable and the M1000M / M2000M is powerful enough for work on the go and for some presentations. The convenience of having both with one machine is that it eliminates the need to synchronize my softwaresetup and projects between a portable machine and a workstation desktop pc.It also seems like I'm not the only one with a demand like this. I tried to ask on Reddit but it looks like nobody knows the answer. trying it here  where could I find a confirmation that the T470 with onboard HD 620 graphics can drive two 4K Dell P2415Q at 60Hz monitors when connected via Thunderbolt? PSREFs just say it can support up to 3 displays (which is cool, but at what resolution and what will be the refresh rate) and max resolution supported is 4K at 60Hz (again, great, but how many of them?)I was planning to use either the Startech's Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter or Dell TB16 dock to connect the monitors, as Lenovo is not providing ways to connect two 4K monitors over the DisplayPortIdeally, I'd love to have a dock which can connect both monitors but as I understand current generation of mechanical docks does not allow to use two 4k monitors, I guess it has something to do with bandwidth of chips used for DP ports in the docks.

We have no way to know if HP will ever issue a BIOS that does support the razer and other similar Tbolt eGPUs but they did just modify BIOS on the Spectre 13 to allow some 3rd party USB-C chargers.

I have an HP Pavilion and 2 TCL televisions that I use as monitors. I can connect to one or the other using WIGI but I would like to duplicate my HP screen on both televisions. Can this be done wirlessly or via HDMI? Thanks

Hello - I wish to connect my 24" Dell monitor (it has every port imaginable) to my Lenovo Yoga 720 WITHOUT using the Thunderbolt port. Is this possible? I am a Jazz musician and I with to use the external display for (1) reading complicatedf [e.g., classical piano] sheet music and (2) for use with DAWs (digital audio workstations, such as Abelton, Pro Tools, etc., where there is LOTS of info crammed in tight and a large monitor is needed). My Yoga's TB port is used for a 500 gig Samsung external hard drive.  The Samsung houses my music programs (e.g., the DAWs, Ivory piano, Easy Drummer, etc.), and I placed them there for the fast speed (this really helps eliminate the latency on the pianos).  I don't need fast speed with the monitor; my prior Lenovo G780 worked just fine with my 24" Dell monitor; the G780 had an HDMI port. I don't find a "TB dock" that has (1) HDMI, display port, etc. AND (2) another TB port.  Does such a thing exist? I've tried the crappy "USB montitors."  They (1) suck and (2) are not 24". Am I screwed here? Thanks, - Jeff Newton (Jazz saxophonist and pianist)

hi, I have setup one of my faculty with a Yoga 920131KB plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock. He has an existing monitor (Samsung Syncmaster P2450) that should support 1920x1080. Seems to be current on all drivers and patches under Win10 EDU version. (Including the CCG4 Firmware Update to v55). We are using the HDMI output from the dock. If we try to configure extended desktop to the Samsung monitor at 1920x1080, the screen extends off both sides about half an inch. Maybe also a quarter inch over at the top.  As a work-around, set at 1680x1050, video generally works as expected, but the display starts about 2" in from either side. Generally I don't like using add-on utilities (prefer to just use standard windows built-in options), but somewhere along the line this has the Intel Graphics HD Utility.  I was using that to switch resolution, the Windows settings seemed to track along with changes in the Intel utility, but still overscanned the display.  I played with some other settings in the utility about Display Scale (other than 100%), didn't seem to change anything. A second problem occurs with this setup: when the laptop is used at home, put to sleep, then plugged into the dock, the screen is displayed on the external monitor at maybe 200% (?).  That is, you only see the central portion of the image.  No fiddling with settings seems to correct it, but rebooting usually fixes it. The second problem also occurs with a similar Yoga 920 + Dock (d... Also wanted to mention something I noticed while working on this: I saved a log from the Intel Utility. There is a section in there about "Maximum Image Size". This seemed to be correct for the laptop display (12.2"x6.69") but the Samsung was listed at 6.3" x 3.54"    It is a 24" diagonal display, so that is obviously wrong, but I don't know that it is important. Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 Report Date: Monday, February 5, 2018Report Time [hh:mm:ss]: 1:21:19 PMDriver Version: 23.20.16.4849Operating System: Windows* 10 Education (10.0.16299)Physical Memory: 16225 MBVendor ID: 8086Device ID: 5917Device Revision: 07Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) Version: 9.0.1066Current Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Display Type: DigitalDDC2 Protocol: SupportedGamma: 2.2Connector Type: DisplayPortDevice Type: DisplayPortMaximum Image SizeHorizontal Size: 6.3 inchesVertical Size: 3.54 inches

Hello everyone, after having a phone call and getting an email from acer support, I was able to update my thunderbolt 3: Does "External GPUs supported: No" means, that I can not use the Asus MB169C+ External Monitor? When I plug in the monitor, the orange lamp shows that there is energy income, but as soon as I push the power button, it says: DisplayPort No Signal.Given the fact that I do not have the original Asus Typ C cable and just a cheap USB Typ C cable from Caletex, might this be the reason for beeing not able to see anything? Should I try it with a real Thunderbolt 3 (20 Gbps) / USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Cable? Or even ask Asus to re-send me the original cable? Happy for getting any help. Best regards.
