GUID typo in X1 Carbon/Yoga 4th/1st gen ECP linux firmware update (n1ful37w.zip)

Q: GUID typo in X1 Carbon/Yoga 4th/1st gen ECP linux firmware update (n1ful37w.zip)

The linux version of the latest BIOS/ECP firmware (1.44/1.18) for the X1 Carbon 4th gen (type 20FB and 20FC) and X1 Yoga 1st gen (types 20FQ, 20FR) was released Aug 2 (n1ful37w.zip) https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Direct link: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ful37w.zip That .zip file contains two .cab files, N1FET70W.cab and N1FHT35W.cab, for the BIOS and ECP respectively. Updating the BIOS in linux for my X1 Carbon 20FB worked fine for me with fwupdmgr, but failed for the ECP. This was because the metadata for the ECP update has a typo. Inside the N1FHT35W.cab file is a firmware.metainfo.xml, with a GUID of: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb7bc72d96b9c3 This is incorrect. It's missing a dash, and should read: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb-7bc72d96b9c3 Modifying this file within the .cab (or extracting it and generating a new .cab) and then flashing that with fwupdmgr fixed the problem. I've attached the modified .cab file (nested in a .zip file for upload). You can check yourself that the only thing that's changed is the GUID line in the .xml file. This typo should be fixed in the source by Lenovo and reuploaded as perhaps a rev 2 for n1ful37w.zip . Hopefully this hasn't happened for any other firmware update files.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

There is a new firmware release (FWNV15) for the NVMe SSD of the X1 Carbon 5th. I'm wondering if there is a way to perform the upgrade on a machine with no Windows installed on the internal SSD?

I've installed Ubuntu on the NVMe SSD and have a external USB Drive with Windows 10.

I tried to run the Firmware Update Utility on the "external" Windows 10 but no luck so far. Windows reboots and after it's up again the utility just shows some generic error message.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a booteable ISO.

Any recommendations on how to upgrade the firmware with my setup?

A:Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

The upgrade utility sometimes fails before it reboots windows with a message like "can't initializie linux system". So I investigated further and found that the updater in fact is an ELF binary  $ file fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.8.13, not stripped Which also seems to be pretty easy to use: $ ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
PROGRESS --- start firmware update.
Usage ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff <Model> <Serial> <Firmware> [Option]
Model : Drive Model Name.(Mandatory)
Serial : Drive Serial Number.(Mandatory)
Firmware : Firmware Image file path.(Mandatory)
Option : Additional Option string starts with `-'.(Optional)
PROGRESS --- completed with status(8). And the necessary info which firmware to use is in a file called fwwinsd.pro: $ cat fwwinsd.pro
"THNSF5512GPUK TO","5KLA5102","5KLA5104","TINYCORE","fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff","5KLA5104_NVME.sig","L","TOSHIBA"

Hi there,  I would really appreciate help in relation to this ongoing error. I am prompted by Vantage on regular basis to update the SSD firmware from 6L7Q to 7L7Q. Using Lenovo Storage firmware update tool 1.103. Fails every time, has been like this for months so I am not expecting an auto update fix.  Tries to do it, gets to reboot, and then the error below appears.  "software condition is not ready to update due to some condition" I have also downloaded from Lenovo website manually, and have run the zipped version, with same result. I have looked up Samsung SSD drivers directly and there is no options for this drive. Has anyone had similar issue? Please let me know if you have a fix.  Many thanks.

Hello, I have Carbon X1 5th (20HR) running Windows 10 pro (updated).  Altought I followed the instructions here - https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cy/en/downloads/ds120390 (This is the page for Lenovo users who wish to update TPM firmware) - and installed the "BIOS Update Utility for Windows 10" version 1.33, Windows still keeps telling me to update the TPM firmware driver.  In BIOS it shows that I have TPM ver 2.0, enabled. Since Windows kept telling me to update the TPM driver, thanks to Google I found out that there is a tool created by Lenovo called "TPM Firmware Update Utility -ThinkPad" (It is worth noting that this tool is not mentioned on the instruction page). I downloaded the tool, but can't understnad how to use it (assuming that I should use it at all, because this tool is not mentioned on the TPM instructions page). Could you please help me to solve the TPM issue described above? Is there a way to check what version do I have? Thanks in advance!

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 on a recently-purchased X1 Extreme gen 2. The installed BIOS version is 1.26. I looked in the Drivers & Software page and I see that 1.27 was released on 29 October. However, running `fwupdmgr --get-updates` says "No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.26: 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older". How long does it usually take for firmware updates to be available via fwupdmgr? Should I manually update? I downloaded the BIOS Update Utility for Linux and the README. The directions in the README are clear, but nowhere do I see the 20QVCTO1WW ID mentioned above and want to make sure that I have the correct files. The BIOS Update Utility download is called `n2oul06w.zip` and contains 3 CAB files: N2OET40P.cab, N2OET40W.cab and N2OHT32W.cab. Is this the right file? Which one should I apply? Thanks in advance,-Mario.

Hello all, So it looks like this "issue" has been resolved. The 7th Gen X1's need to have the ECP upgraded to at least 1.05, as the documentation states. This however doesn't make sense to me. How could Lenovo ship, from the factory, a 7th Gen X1 Carbon with Firmware version 1.13 and ECP version 1.02? According to the table below this should not even be possible. In the "resolved" threads I see the comments (and I'm paraphrasing) say "This is not actually an issue - the devices need version x.xx of the ECP to run the Firmware Updater with the silent parameter".  We are in a bind trying to deploy Windows 10 to thousands of end users and the only available device right now for us is the 7th Gen X1. We have had to put our order on hold to work through these issues. Our rep was unaware that this was an issue. An escalated phone call brought in two other resources; a manager of an engineering team, and some type of manager of enterprise solutions of Windows 10 deployments. None of these employees have any idea (as of this week) that this is an issue or was an issue. So Lenovo is shipping out devices with Firmware versions that do not match the ECP version as stated in the table below? How is this even possible? And there is no automated solutions? Does this mean my technicians will manually need to update the firmware to get the ECP to 1.05+ on THOUSANDS of devices? This has a massive cost associated with it. The aforemationed "...manager of enterprise solution... Read more

A:Unable to Update Firmware Silently - 7th Gen X1 Carbon

I have the same issue as well.   You need to update the ECP to 1.05 first and then you can silently update using the 1.20 UEFI.   Unfortunatly there is no silent ECP update to 1.05 available at the moment.  My understanding is that the silent update has been disabled because suspending a machine after the silent update on some versions will result in the machine being bricked.

I'm setting up a new X1 Carbon with machine type 20FB. It came with a Samsung MZNTY256HDHP SSD. I noted there was a recent SSD firmware update package for this laptop model, so I downloaded and ran the updater. It reported there were no updates. However, after digging a bit deeper, I discovered that the SSD firmware updater for the X1 Carbon 20A7/20A8/etc. DOES have an update for the SSD in this machine. What is going on here? Does this firmware update somehow only apply when the SSD is installed in a 20A7? Or did this particular model of SSD just get missed when Lenovo was putting together the firmware update package for the 20FB?

Hi guys, I recently got hold of my new X1 carbon and decided to do a thorough firmware update with vantage. When the trackpoint utility firmware 1.0.0.3 was installed, my laptop flashed with an installation failure notice and rebooted. After that, the trackpoint as well as the mouse above the touchpad no longer worked. I tried the advanced setting in control panel, but the entire trackpoint configuration option was blacked out. Does anybody experience similar issues with this update and have any suggestions on how to do a home fix for this? I have been making do with the touchpad and a bluetooth mouse, but it does not feel very "thinkpad" this way.....

A:X1 Yoga and Intel ME Firmware update being pushed but how?

Lenovo System Interface Foundation (LSIF) is doing this.  The only purpose of this app is to support Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion, so if you don't install these apps, there is no point to install LSIF.  One of the features of LSIF is to automatically install "critical" updates for Lenovo software and drivers, such as this recent Intel ME Firware update.

The Deployment Guide for Lenovo Settings and/or Companion explains this feature and how to disable it:  https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/hf003321

I have copied-and-pasted the relevent section below:

Chapter 4. Considerations for Deployment

Lenovo System Interface Foundation contains some features which may not be appropriate for enterprise customers.  Please read this section carefully to understand these features and consider whether they should be disabled in your specific environment.

1.  Automatic Updates ? Lenovo System Interface Foundation updates itself automatically whenever a new version is posted to the Lenovo website. Some IT organizations will want to disable this.  The automatic update can be disabled by registry.  To do so, copy-and-paste the below text into a .reg file and then import it into your registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Lenovo\ImController]

It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of."I've tried "Update Driver" but everytime with this same result.I've also tried "Uninstall Device". But then it goes back to a driver from 2006 (indeed the error is gone) and when I update the driver, the error is back. Also, after the update (during booting the computer, it says it was successful), the update is still listed under the System Update Tool, indicating it actually didn't install (see below). However, just trying it again, doesn't result in a different result. Does anyone have a suggestion what could be going on?(I think the bios update, which just a few days back became available, is related to certain security problems that Intel was having...)

After installing the latest firmware update (V.4.20/5.04/100.3) touch screen is dead. I looked at the device manager and no indication of error anywhere. Can't find device that would require an update - nothing like 'other device', nor under Human Interface Devices.  Noted that during the update it reported several times 'pen not found'.  How to enable touch screen again that worked perfectly fine until this update was installed?

After performing the May 15, 2018 update, my touchscreen no longer works.  The Wavcom device in device manager is hidden and shows "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"  I have done extensive searches in this site and in google and have not been able to find a solution.  It was working fine before the update.

Hello everyone, Lenovo System Update keep asking me to install version 10.0.56.3002 of Intel Management Engine Firmware on my ThinkPad Yoga 12 (Type 20DK) running Windows 10 Pro x64. Once I install the update, a cmd window pops up for a fraction of a second, then my PC restarts. However, the installation seems to fail as System Update keeps asking me to install the update again after the reboot. I understand that this update is security critical and therefore want to resolve the installation error. I've done a little debugging by running MEInfoWin.exe and FWUpdLcl64.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME:The update seems to fail indeed, as MEInfoWin.exe still reports my FW Version as 10.0.55.3000.When I try to manually run the upgrade, I get an error:C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ME>FWUpdLcl64.exe -f ME10.0_5M_Production.binIntel (R) Firmware Update Utility Version: 10.0.56.3002Copyright (C) 2007 - 2017, Intel Corporation. I did some updates on my Yoga and now my touchscreen no longer works. I have gone to the device manager and updated and checked on it. No luck. My pen works, but the finger touch does not. Nothing else seems to have happened to my computer past the updates. It seems like others seem to have this problem since updating their computers. My computer is no longer under warranty, and since I bought this thing for its touchscreen, I am a little choked that it has gone kaput. Would it have been the update that caused it, or would it have been just a case of it went kaputsky at the same time and it is a mere coincidence? Either way, I am really upset that this machine is broken so soon. Any idea if there is going to be an update to fix this or if it is now just blown?

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

Hello,     I was recently prompted to install the following updates but I am unsure as to what they mean and if it is absolutely necessary/recommended to install them. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.  Edit: My BIOS update also asked me to choose from two options: Update BIOS or Update Model number.  I have updated neither as I am unsure what it means and why I see that message. Can someone please tell me what it means? Thank you.
